Mordain looked to the mage lords to allow them to answer this question. In truth, he did not know how many of the mages were still alive. |

"Between forty and fifty," Andros responded. The white-bearded mage lord frowned. "Many of them are apprentices though. We lost over half our number in Ataya, and more perished on the way north when the undead attacked our rear." "There are a few mages already in Asulien, staying here before the army arrived," Solo Fryysen commented. "But Asulien is not a city well-visited by mages. I am the only one of mage lord rank, and then there are fourteen others." |

Bayel nodded "Not many, but hopefully enough to combat the enemy's magic then." There was little more he could say, they had all suffered losses and empty condolences were long beyond usefulness. Bayel was an old man, his glory days were far behind him, and he had never expected to see a war such as this. He was quite sure that this battle could be his last, every battle had the opportunity to be a soldier's last, but he was still confident that Weissland could survive. If it does not destroy itself from the inside first, the old general thought sadly. |

"And don't forget," Andors said with a smile. "We also have Mordain Thaendil. Few among the servants of Dratmor can stand against him." Loter Arthious retreated to the back wall. He was beginning to get bored with this. He wanted to be outside and inspect the walls and the battlegrounds. But his words were being listened to and therefore it would be silly of him to leave. |

"What of the undead hunters?" a lesser offiser who had not spoken yet asked. "They suffered many casualties at Ledek's Pass, but any few who are left would be greatly useful. Also what of the monks of Aracen?" The offiser who had spoken was Snes Kvangar. He was fairly young, but still he had experience. He had fought in the White Realm and had been important in the evacuation of Adae, when the army of Weissland had moved north. |

"The Undead Hunters... I don't know. Few, if any, survived the battle of Ledek's Span. And the supposed monks of 'Aracen' have proven elusive, showing themselves rarely. We can't rely on such servants of questionable powers." Mordain said, his voice heavy with doubt. He had no faith in the gods, he didn't even believe they existed. |

Meanwhile, in an old smithy in the city, Telen and Turak was meeting with their fellow Black Network-operative. The room was below groundlevel, and was dark and hot. Heat oozed from the furnace, and both Telen and Turak stood well back from the warmth. The man who called himself Master Damian stood by the furnace however. He had his long hair in a knot and was wearing a leather apron. He was talking with a rough, dark voice which gave the impression that he had tired it out with screaming. Without doubt the profession as a blacksmith was not the truth when it came to Master Damian. "Things may look up for you," Damian said he turned his tools around in the fire. Telen and Turak had already told the man about the retreat from Endral, Volan's disappearance and the death of Grobtak. They had been honest since it would have been a catastrophe to hide something, but at least Turak had had little hope for them. "What do you mean?" Telen asked. "I mean you should forget about your original plans," Damian carried on as he lifted a heavy hammer from a rack. "You have come to just the right place if you wanted a new task. There are two members of the High Court here now." "Two members?" Turak gasped in surprise. "Here in Asulien." Both Telen and Turak understood what Damian meant with High Court. It was just another word for the Dark Council. The true Dark Council which ruled the organization known as the Black Network, which many referred to simply as the Dark Council. Damian nodded and waited. But neither Telen nor Turak dared to ask who of the Dark Council was within the city walls. "They are both among the leaders now," Damian carried on. "Up in the Eastern Spire I think. Some sort of meeting between the generals, officers, mage lords and officials." "Do they know of us?" "They do," Damian smiled as he began hammering the hot metal on his anvil. "They have a task for you." "And what is that?" Telen asked, eager to know. "The wife of Lathaon Thaendil," Damian said. "Arhaina. Find her, capture her and bring her to this place." Telen and Turak was not surprised by this task. They had expected anything. Both turned towards the door, about to leave, but Damian called out. "Oi Turak!" The black haired member of the Shattered Sword turned his head towards Damian. "What?" "The ring? I think you can give it to me now." Damian grinned. Turak sighed as he took the leather pouch from his belt. The pouch contained the ring he had taken off the dead body of Grobtak. A magical ring which had been the artifact which earned Grobtak his place at the Dark Council. "Thank you," Damian whispered as he caught the leather pouch when Turak tossed it to him. |

James said, "We need to put the troops somewhere, however. The walls are only so wide and long. You gentlemen have this idea that we should commit ninety percent or so of our strength on the walls, but where are we to fit all of these men? It is a logistical impossibility. Fifty thousand men manned the Great Wall, and we have almost twice that number within Asulien." |

((We do? That quite much. Remember a large part of the army must have gone west with the refugees. At least a third.)) Loter Arthious stepped forth from the wall and towards the map. "The point is to hold the walls for a long time," Loter said. "Not for a day and a night, but for days and nights. That should be our goal now, unless the magic of Drathmor gets the best of us. Men can not fight constantly for more than a fine number of hours." He gestured with his fingers above the map, drawing a circular movement with his finger. "Do not consider finding a forward position for all our men, instead having some in reserve and rotate them. It's the same when fight defensively as when you fight offensively. You do not have to use all the men at the same time. If we rotate our units, pull back tired and wounded and push in fresh troops while the others rest we can hold for much longer." |

"With the number of soldiers available to us, and the size of the walls, we will be able to hold a good number in reserve. The walls of this city are strong. If we have plenty of reserves to move to the front when the time comes, we will be able to hold far longer than if we were to use them all at once." |
|

"That is quite a different concept than was being proposed before," said James. "Holding forces down in the streets is not much different than holding them in reserve. The only problem is, however, trying to rotate forces in the middle of battle is a difficult proposition. We cannot rotate them unless Drathmor chooses to back off for some time during his assault, which I do not think will happen. All we can do with the reserves is use them to fill holes in the line when men die." |

"That in itself is a useful option, replacing lost men," Loter reponded. "If we try putting every man along the line, that will be difficult but if we hold them in reserve it will be easier to fill the holes. But we have the ability to create room to rotate our forces. If we save some of our magic users to use as shock troopers, together with the Dragon Lords who has still not been mentioned as this meeting, we may force the undead sufficiently back so we may replace our troops and pull tired and wounded back from the line." |

Bayel said "I would agree with that. Using magic is tiring and draining is it not? Surely the enemy must pull back to prevent their army from falling apart. We simply have not had any engagements with them which have lasted long enough for that to occur." |

Officer Snes Kvangar opened his mouth again, uttering a warning, "We face the Great Necromancer. Do not underestimate him, for all we know he might be able to keep his entire army standing and fighting all by himself without his lackeys." |

Bayel replied to the other officer "Well, you hide under your bed young man and we'll go and test your theory." There was an undercurrent of stifled laughter amongst several of the other senior officers. |

Mordain slammed his staff off the ground, bringing an end to the laughter, and looked at the young officer. "The Great Necromancer's power is vast, yes. Even if he cannot sustain his entire army alone, it is more than likely that he can sustain a force greater than our own without aid from his minions. We must ve very careful not to under-estimate him. That is why reserves are so important. Now, we merely need to decide whether we will keep our reserves out of harms way, or if we have them in the streets?" Mordain turned to Jaunne after he had finished, however. "Commander; how many healers do you have in this city? I was hoping to establish an area within the city where we could take our wounded that they could be tended to by mages, with the hope that many would be able to return to the battle before it was finsihed." |

Snes Kvangar simply made a stiff bow towards General Bayel as a response to the mocking made by the older man. This caused some of the other people in the room to smirk, despite of Mordain's words. The gaze of Snes Kvangar met that of Bayel as the man rose again. The eyes of Snes Kvangar was pale and dozylike. |

((Wherever did that name come from?
))"There are many ordinary healers who should be able to patch up minor wounds, as well as four magical healers," Jaunne said, managing to keep his head despite the open insult Mordain had given to the Gods and the Order. --- Kalon was blasted off his feet by another shockwave from Korth, but this time the druid charged, sword poised to decapitate the dark elf. That was a mistake though; Korth had opened himself up with that move and Kalon still had his weapon at hand. As the druid's sword swung, so too did the dark elf's sword, slicing through the robes on his arm, and the thin leather beneath, and cutting into his flesh. The pain was immediate and debilitating, and Korth fell to his knees before he could finish the attack. "Now, I have other business to attend to," Kalon said softly. "Goodbye, druid." He left without further ado. |
