"I guess we'll have to sneak in if we want to get Ithrain in there," Elandir said. "I think I have something to help... Lathaon has done this stuff before..."

He rumaged through the items he had taken from the archmage's office. There was a vial containing some sort of icy blue mist, a chunk of white crystal, a few other little trinkets. The spellbook was what he needed though. Leafing through it, he found all manner of seemingly useless ideas and notes and a few random spells written down in their runic form. He managed to find the chameleon spell he had been looking for as he came near the end.

"Right, Arhaina, Narandar, Khanden and Brae, you should all be able to walk in without problems. Renaulin, you will come with me and Ithrain. I'll-"

Ithrain opened his eyes at that point, and tried to speak.

"I'll try to conceal us," Elandir said. "Ithrain, you'd better follow if you don't want your throat cut. In fact, you'll be leading the way. Khanden, untie his legs."

The Royal Guard did so and Ithrain, looking at Narandar again, stood up and waited for Elandir. The mercenary read the spell from the book, directing the magic on himself and the two other subjects. The power going through him made him feel dizzy and light-headed, and he realised he would faint if he did not act soon. Drawing his sword, he urged Ithrain on. The others followed.

________________

Cyrredlues had less difficulty cloaking himself and the seven others with him. Two of them were magic-users, and by his command, they covered all eight with the magic of illusion. They were visible, but only to those who knew they were there. All other eyes would instinctively turn or close.

From the north, they lifted themselves up to the top of the wall with a gust of magical wind.

Brae followed Elandir with Ithrain leading the way. They moved silently through the streets of Asulien.

Every so often, Brae shot a glance to the sky, just to make sure that the raven-form of Korth was still in sight.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

The city was full of members of the Order, it seemed, but nobody questioned them for now.

They moved quickly to the foot of the enormous temple, and it was at that point that guards barred the way in. They did not see Elandir, Renaulin or Ithrain, but it didn't matter; the door was closed and the guards crossed their halberds, denying entry.

"The sanctuary is off limits. Please move along."

((No.))

"Guards, stand aside," Arhaina said, walking to the front. "That's an order."

"I am sorry, milady, but we already have our orders. Move along."

"Who gave you these orders?" she asked, moving closer. "Who here has more authority than the council?"

"Milady, this is sacred ground - it belongs to the Gods, not to us, not to you. Now will you please leave? We don't want any trouble."

Brae moved forward. "This is a time of war, damn it! The dead walk the earth, trying to draw us all into their darkness. Do you think this is the time for gods? The gods aren't going to do anything that we won't do for ourselves!"

"And who gave us the means and the will to fight? Who else is there to turn to in death? Prayer can help the people through hard times like these, ease their panic. Devotion can overcome fear and uncertainty, even in battle. Yet no good can come of such disrespect."

Narandar took this opportunity to join the argument. "Why have the gates been shut? The temples normally welcome visitors."

"Correct. However, as the Seeker said, this is a time of war. The newfound security of this sanctuary is for the good of the people."

"I know what is and is not good for the people," Arhaina said in frustration. "If you cannot let us through, then bring me someone who can. This is a matter of great importance."

"Haidas is not here. You may speak to Chalanth Jaunne, our second-in-command, if he will allow it. There is an inn down that road; you should wait there."

Brae took a step back before talking. "Then we will await his company there." He eyed the guards, his stare cold. "And tell him that it would be in his interest to allow what we want."

With Arhaina in the lead, they followed the road down to the inn which the guard had directed them to. It was high quality, appearing to be an expensive sort of place, with everything tidy and finely made. There were a few people there already, sitting at tables, talking and some drinking. The innkeeper was a cheerful black-bearded dwarf.

Arhaina stopped and blinked, barely believing her eyes. "Kasimir?! What are you doing here?"

Brae said nothing as he entered the inn. He merely stood near to Arhaina, looking around. The Order and he had never agreed. He did not approve of their way of doing things, nor did they approve of his, let alone Mordain's methods.

"Business has been good; I was able to move over here. Been meaning to for a while actually; I thought at first I'd have to wait until your husband finally paid me back, but no," the dwarf said, walking forward to greet them, smiling. "Got here all by myself, and the debt remains."

As Khanden closed the door behind them, the three camouflaged elves came back into view. Elandir had fallen to the floor clutching his head and lost consciousness yet again.

Brae paid little attention to the elves as they emerged from their cover. He sat motionless, staring into a dimly-lit corner.

--Weissland Column Entering Asulien--

Mordus sat in front of the carriage with the driver at the righns, watching the marble grey sky lying ahead of them. He brought one gloved hand into his cloak and retrieved a small flak, wetting his lips with the contents before swigging heartily on the liquer.

He became aware of the closening city walls as they entered the shadow cast by its towering structures and lowered his flask back onto his belt. This would be it. He could feel the foreboding in the air.

He motioned seemingly pointlessly into the crowd of refugees beside the carriage as for a moment nothing happened, but soon enough two Seekers stepped sideways out of the mass of people and clambered onto the back of the vehicle. They carried with them tinctures and potions for Drakkon's wounds and wasted little time in tending to them.
Glory is fleeting, but obscurity lasts for eternity.

"Is there..." Arhaina started, then lowered her voice, "a less public place we could go to? Some of the men among us," she gestured towards the three who had just appeared, "would be better off hidden, as would the words we would exchange."

"Certainly milady, there's a room available," Kasimir told her. "But I expect gold this time, not promises. I don't often have any free around here and I can't afford to deny a real customer a roof and bed."

"Take us there. I want a word with you."

"Fine," the dwarf said. He turned to a man, presumably an assistant of some sort. "Felar, take over for me, for a while."

Khanden lifted Elandir up over his shoulder, then the group followed the innkeeper upstairs.

Brae cast a skeptical glance around him as he followed Arhaina and the dwarf. Who was this man?

((I left the defenses and layout for you Rudder, since you seemed to have a pretty good idea of how it should be.))

"Take a seat, make yourself at home - all of you," Kasimir said. He hesitated as he looked at the dark elf but added, "A friend of hers is a friend of mine."

"Kasimir, you've met Elandir already I know. The dark elf there is Renaulin, an ally-"

"Well met!"

"- and this is Narandar," she continued in between greetings, nodding towards each, "and his brother Ithrain, a former council mage until he betrayed us. And this is Brae, one of Mordain's Seekers."

Kasimir extended his hand in greeting and smiled again. "My name's Kasimir. I'm a friend of the archmage. Pleasure to meet each one of you. And you-"

"Khanden," the Royal Guard said as the dwarf gestured to him.

Telen stood at the corner of a large warehouse not far from the inn called the The Old Mill. He chew on a long straw as he watched the busy streets. Asulien was filling up, both of refugees and off soldiers. It would be easy to blend in among the refugees he thought.

Still he cursed. Gonhin had been troublesome. The half-orc could not hide his appearance, and even though there were such people in the service of Weissland they were few. He was going to attract attention and trouble. He could not hide his face with a hood either. In the city controlled by the Order of the Light it was forbidden to hide your face, by hood or scarf. Gonhin had to stay low and out of sight, and could therefore not take part in the information gathering that Telen and Turak was making.

Telen spotted Turak coming down the street. Turak was one of two survivours among the Shattered Guild, the other was Gonhin, who had managed to escape from Endral. He had shaven off his black beard, and now look clean and well-dressed. Telen had not shaved, letting his grey beard grow hiding his gruseom scar along his cheek.

He contemplated their situation as he waited for Turak. Telen had been one of the few friends of Grobtak. They had been fellow travellers on many a journey, and both respected each other, having saved each other lives on different occasions. Now Grobtak was gone, killed by something which Telen had understood little off. It could have been Dantares who did the act, as Telen had witnessed before, but the voice that had sounded over the Plains outside Endral had not belonged to the leader of the Black Network. He did not understand why or how Grobtak was killed. Something had happened in Endral which Telen did not know of, and neither did Turak or Gonhin.

Turak reached the corner where Telen waited.

"Did you find him?" Telen asked. His voice had a edge to it. He did not approve of Turak and considered him an amateur in this game.

"I did," Turak nodded. It did not seem like he noticed the tone in Telen's voice. "His name here is Damian. He is a blacksmith a few blocks away. Dantares is in direct contact with him. Also he has two people in the army defending Asulien."

"Only two?" Telen looked around them. Turak was being less careful than the weary forest ranger was found off, but none were close enough to listen.

"They are in strong positions." Turak said. "Come let us find Gonhin, we should talk with him first then meet with our Master Damian."

As the army marched through the wide iron gates of Asulien, James began to look around at the fortress he soon would be charged with defending. It was built in a semi-circular fashion facing west, with the base anchored firmly against the high mountains, a sheer rock face that no attacking army would be able to scale, forcing any enemy to attack head on against the front of the fortress. The walls were high, nearly a hundred feet to the top, forcing the construction of large siege towers for any who hoped to take it. There were three large towers on either side of the gate, placed in intervals with the first directly next to the gate. The walls were equipped with massive ballistae with powerful bolts, presumably to attack enemy siege equipment and creatures. There were many houses, shops, and other civilian structures within the outer wall, but beyond them was the inner wall, shorter at about fifty feet, with another iron gate. There were no towers on this wall, and no ballistae. Within this wall were houses for the nobles and the military. Finally, at the center, was a massive structure, a large, imposing keep that rose at least two hundred feet into the air, fortified and solid, with a single set of iron double doors at the bottom. This was the Order of Light Headquarters, and would be from where the siege would be commanded.

Nathaniel Drakkon could see from the wagon that they had arrived in Asulien. He knew that all that mattered now was keeping to his oath. There would be a trial sometime soon, but he could deal with that. Nathaniel ignored the spirit, speaking within his head. It was in the background, like hearing the muffled conversation of people in another room.
