Daemmion stood in the tower; he had never left. As he watched the camp, he saw the souls of his foes form into their ranks. A night attack; typical. His mind passed over the city, reaching into the minds of every warrior under his command. -Rise- The orcs made no effort to conceal the fact that they were getting up. From the city, sounds could be heard; grunts, shouts, even the clang of metal as the orcs donned their battle gear. The majority of the force, once more, headed for the western wall. A group of about five thousand, however, stayed near the city centre. Daemmion knew that if the Weisslanders were to attack by night, then it would be foolish to attack by one side alone. The orcs in the centre could quickly move to any side of the city if and when the second attack came. ((Before anyone starts whining, Daemmion has the same soul-sight as Shaellana did, so he doesn't need light to see anything. I posted that in Ataya. ))

((I figured you would see them somehow. But the Orcs still can't. ))Aldon gave the order, and the men began their advance towards the city under the cover of darkness. As they advanced, Aldron sent word to Boralays to break off a third of the army, about five thousand men, and march south to flank the city by that way. That would leave the men at the front of the city outnumbered, but they would perform admirably, Aldron knew; they would do their part. Edited by Hotshot, Mar 26 2010, 01:31 PM.

Daemmion watched patiently through the darkness. His forces were quickly assembling. A night attack was not what he had first expected, but now that it was happening it wasn't surprising. Perhaps the Weissland hierarchy were not as honourable as he had thought. But, that did not matter. As far as he was concerned, he was a lord defending his land. Living in the Defiled Kingdom was not something he enjoyed. In fact, if truth be told, he would rather die defending this tiny scrap of land he had claimed than return to that wretched place. So long he had lived in the darkness, the smog, the ash. Now he longed for more. His acolytes were amongst the ranks below, but three were with him in the tower. He would need their aid to summon forth any of his more powerful spells, especially if he wished to conserve his energy. The Weisslanders had brought mages; from what he knew of Weissland procedures, for a mission like this there would be at least one Mage Lord. Daemmion desired to fight the lord alone, more to test his new powers than anything else. But a Mage Lord, like a Necromancer Lord, was not to be underestimated. He would need all the strength he could save. |

While Mistrandar and three of the mages remained with the main force of Weissland soldiers, the barriers raised to protect them, Boralays had been tasked with taking five thousand men south to attack from that direction. He had taken two mages with him, and they had raised barriers around these soldiers. Boralays led the troops onwards to make sure they were in position in time. The Weissland soldiers marched with perfect discipline, never out of step. With staff and sword in hand Boralays walked on, keeping pace with the soldiers around him. Once they were far enough south the formations turned and began advancing towards the city once more. |

With Boralays in position, Aldron ordered the main part of his army to move forward again. When his archers were within range of their powerful longbows, Aldron ordered a volley of arrows to be loosed upon the city. |

Daemmion watched the arrows fall. A number of orcs lost their lives, but no matter. The old necromancer had plenty of defensive tricks up his sleeve to drive the enemy away. Whilst the Weisslanders had been marching south from Asulien, he had been creating and reinforcing defences for a battle just as this. Before the Weisslanders could reach the city, they would have to navigate the spikes that stuck from the ground. Reaching into the minds of his captains, he told them once more to have the orcs take cover to avoid the arrows. And to wait. Edited by chadden, Mar 28 2010, 01:31 PM.

((Quiet you, I'm high ))The captains ordered the orcs to began returning fire towards the enemy, but in the dark there was little light. They knew only roughly where their enemy were. They fired blindly, for the most part, towards the Weisslanders, keeping the hail of arrows constant. Daemmion still watched and waited, a calm smile resting comfortably upon his face. The Weisslanders advanced confidently now; their enemy's fire seemed weak and scattered for despite its consistency, it was horribly inaccurate. As they advanced, however, one of the captains saw that there were large wooden spikes ahead; the Weisslanders would have to break formation to navigate these spikes, and a sense of dread overcame the captain. Turning around, he summoned his sergeant and said, "Quick, tell the other captains to halt." "Yes, sir," said the sergeant. Then, grabbing several soldiers from the rear of the formation, the sergeant and his men took off in different directions. Soon, the entire formation was halted and in a defensive posture, waiting for a decision to be made while a messenger hurried to Lord Aldron. "What is it?" asked Aldron. "Milord, one of the captains ordered a halt because we are approaching large wooden stakes in the ground," said the messenger. "He was worried about breaking formation to traverse them." Aldron nodded. "Mistrandar," he called to the mage. "Is there anything you can do about the stakes?" |

Mistrandar stepped forward and nodded "With the elemental lore I should be able to dislodge them from the earth, but it will take time to remove them all. Let me begin." He raised his hands, one holding his staff aloft and began to chant the words to a spell. Magical energy hovered around the elf, clinging to his robes and staff. Gradually the soldiers began to hear sounds, sounds of the earth rumbling. Several of the large stakes shuddered in the ground. Mistrandar continued, and the stakes which had begun to move were suddenly torn from the ground and dropped harmlessly onto their sides. A bead of sweat ran down the elven mage lord's face. Once more he spoke the words to the spell, and another group of the stakes started to be uprooted. He had cleared roughly half the stakes required for formation to continue unhindered. Feeling it necessary Mistrandar spoke different words, and the stakes levitated from the ground. Directing the magic with his staff, the mage lord sent them hurling end over end over the wall, where they crashed down into the area just beyond it. He said "A few more minutes and I'll be done." He began the original spell once more, but the strain was starting to show on his face. |

Daemmion could feel the magic rushing through the air itself, and he saw the stakes fly towards his own soldiers. The old necromancer quickly spotted the mage responsible, and judging by the power being shed it was a Mage Lord. He reached out with one of his spells, a technique developed by Mordain Thaendil to disarm mages. He spoke the words of the spell, from the lore of black magic. A pool of pure-black liquid began to form beneath Mistrandar... |

Mistrandar saw what the necromancer was attempting to do and reacted. Words of power flowed from his mouth and he rose several feet into the air. There was a flash of bright white light, and he was encased in a heavy orb of magic. Leaving the enemy for now, he returned to the removal of the stakes. Chanting once more, another dozen stakes were dug from the ground and discarded. Twenty stakes remained, and then the army would be able to continue without breaking their formation. |

Daemmion intensified his attack. The liquid suddenly erupted, a spire of it bursting from the pool to engulf the sphere that protected the Mage Lord. The two spells raged against each other; the dark liquid completely encased the sphere, blinding the Mage Lord, then began pushing down upon the sphere, attempting to break through. |

Mistrandar intensified his defence, forming a layer of healing magic just inside the sphere. Even blind he could continue his spell and remove the stakes. He chanted, his words not faltering even though his body was weakening. With a final word the stakes were cast up and thrown over the wall and out of harms way. The soldiers would be clear to advance, even if Mistrandar was not able to join them yet. |

Seeing that the stakes were clear, Aldron gave the word for his soldiers to advance. They advanced in unison, keeping their formation strong as they advanced. But even as they did so, Aldron watched Mistrandar with worry; he wished to help the elf, but knew nothing of magic or how he could without making things worse. |

Boralays and his formation were continuing their advance towards the city. He had received word from one of the mages with Mistrandar about the halt due to the stakes, and had paused in response. With the main formation moving again, he ordered the soldiers with him to continue as well. Seeing the clashing magic in the air, Boralays knew something was wrong, but had a duty to continue regardless. |

Daemmion pulled the sphere to the ground, holding it as tightly as he could and bringing the full strength of his power down to shatter it. The surface of the holy spell did began to weaken and crack as the shadow pushed against it. With the Weisslanders on the move, the orcs began firing again. They were still some distance from the wall, however, but now walking over what would have once been ground covered in stakes. Seeing that the time was right, acolytes along the walls unleashed balls of flame that went hurtling into the midst of the Weisslander ranks. The ground had been layered heavily with a thick oil. Some Weissland soldiers were on top of it, some were in front and some were behind. A titanic wall of fire shot up along the middle of their ranks. Very few lost their lives to the eruption of fire, but the force was cut in half, separated by the wall of fire. With the light from the flames showing the enemy, the orcs intensified their arrow fire, aiming now and more focussed upon their foes. |

The Weisslanders were broken apart and disoriented by the immediate burst of fire, causing some men to panic, but they regained their composure quickly, thanks in no small part to their famous training and discipline. They formed up again, with the men at the front assuming a defensive posture while the men at the back trusted their mages to clear the way to join their comrades. So far, Aldron had heard no fighting from the south, and hoped that Boralays and his men were having success in their flanking. |

Seeing that the Weisslanders were now trapped and waiting for mage support, the acolytes worked together to breathe more powerful life into the fire. The giant flames intensified in strength and heat. Then, with a sudden move, they leapt forward and struck out against the trapped Weisslanders, forcing them forward and damaging their formation. |
