Aldron nodded. "Thank you. I will not micromanage you or assume to know your abilities better than you; I ask only that you ensure our victory and protect my men. Other than that, you are free to act as you wish."

Boralays nodded sagely "Of course Lord Aldron. We will spread ourselves amongst the formations to protect them equally."

Boralays bowed slightly and said "For Weissland."

Mistrandar echoed the line and then they moved off. Boralays motioned for the mages to spread themselves out with the troops, the five younger magic-users following his brief command quickly.

With the mages spread out amongst his troops, Aldron knew that they would be well-protected. He sent out the orders to his battalion commanders to begin the advance. As a single unit, the army stepped off towards the city, ready and eager for battle.

Daemmion stood in the tower and watched the Weisslanders begin their advance. He willed his magic to life, speaking directly into the minds of his orc captains below.

-Have your archers ready. Target the Weissland soldiers and unleash your arrows as soon as they are within range-

The old necromancer held his staff, vague sparks of dark green lightning crackling around it. An unnatural wind began to blow and the skies darkened. Even if the city should fall, he would not allow it to fall easily. But this would not be an easy battle. Even from this distance, he could detect the arrival of other mages. How many, and how powerful, remained to be seen.
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

The mages worked their magic and raised barriers around the troops to proof them as best as possible against magic attack before raising personal defences.

Boralays drew his sword as he marched with the advance.

Soon, the Weisslanders' longbows were within range of the city. Skilled as the archers were, their longbows allowed them to fire at longer ranges than was available to other armies, giving them a precious few extra volleys. They rained arrows down on the city in clouds as the infantry advanced towards the city.

The orcs along the walls took casualties, many being too slow to take cover in time. Truthfully they had not expected an attack so soon. The first volley struck without interruption. However, by the time the second was launched, Daemmion was already working his magic. After chanting the words to his spell, he jerked his staff violently through the air. In response, the wind howled and roared with fury. Its movements became random and chaotic, throwing the arrows in all directions and sapping them of their momentum. Bar a few, the arrows fell harmlessly across both the city and the grassy fields beyond.

Again, he reached into the minds of his captains.

-They're not in range yet, but have the archers stay vigilant. Fire as soon as they are-

The men continued to march, and Aldron ordered the archers to move forward; their arrows were now being scattered, certainly by some fell magic. They would need to get closer to try to have more accurate shooting.

Boralays had seen the arrows scattered but there was little they could do for the time being. With only two mage lords and five mages, and an unknown number of necromancers to fight, conserving their magic and maintaining the magical barriers around the troops were the better strategy.

Boralays spoke a few words of magic, strengthening part of the barrier around Lord Aldron's personal guard. His large grey beard bristled angrily, Boralays felt the thrill of battle again. If truth were told before the outbreak of the Defiled Kingdom war and now this cleaning up, Boralays had not been beyond Ataya for a couple of years. Teaching new mages had kept him in the Mystic Tower, and they would have been starting to take field trips with him, learning by the fire of combat in the real world, but the war changed that. Many had fallen when Ataya had been attacked, young lives snuffed out before they had the chance to learn the mysteries of the mage.

The orc archers unleashed their first volley against the Weissland soldiers, followed quickly by a second. Their captains had instructed them not to let up. And as the orc arrows fell, Daemmion changed the wind once more, guiding them and building strength. Though the disciplines of Weissland commanded them to hide behind their shields, not all escaped the hail of arrows.

With the arrows beginning, Daemmion dispatched a number of his acolytes amongst the orcs. Their purpose was to bolster the defences of the simple creatures. The garrison in Aelendak was over thirty-thousand strong in orcs alone, with a few hundred humans and elves drafted in too. Most of the force was focussed on the western edge, but Daemmion had kept reserves... elsewhere. He couldn't rule out that the Weisslanders would attack from two sides, if not more.

Some of the acolytes launched simple magical attacks from the walls. Daemmion hoped to keep his enemy unsure of just how many necromancers were in the city. The old necromancer himself remained in the tower, all but obscured from view. He watched the battle before him as his orcs continued to lay down volley after volley of arrows on the approaching soldiers. And, before they could reach the wall, they would need to pass the stakes in the ground and the orcs concealed in the trenches there, waiting to strike. The trenches had been covered with make-shift trapdoors covered in grass and dirt. The enemy would be all but on top of them before they even had a hope of noticing anything.

As the Weisslanders advanced, a courier suddenly came riding up to Aldron in a hurry. Pulling out a letter, the courier handed it to Aldron. Aldron read the letter quickly and then nodded to the courier, who rode off back from whence he came. He immediately sent out orders to all his battalion commanders, who halted the advance short of the city. They began to fall back to their camps, and Aldron sent word for the mage lords to meet him in his command tent; the defenses had been tested, and the Weisslanders would camp for the night.

Daemmion watched the advance halt and the soldiers withdraw. At first, he was confused, but after a while he smiled.

"Master?" asked an acolyte who still lingered in the tower.

"Seems they just wanted to see what we were capable of." He turned to his apprentice. "Tell Grattig to have the orcs in the trench stay there. I cannot risk having them revealed. The force at the bottom of the wall can be disbanded, but have them all ready to return to the fight should the need arise. And, finally, double all patrols around the city as well as watchmen stationed in the towers. If they try anything by night, I don't want to be taken by surprise."

"At once, master."

Boralays and Mistrandar moved through the camp towards Aldron's command tent. They had set their five charges to heal any wounded soldiers they could and then get some rest. While the mage lords had greater power and reserves of magic, the mages would need to rest to replenish what power they had used on the barriers.

Mistrandar said quietly "How many more of these nests of resistance do you think are digging in around Weissland?"

The human mage replied "I do not know, but hopefully few. The force led by Drathmor to Asulien was particularly massive, a huge blow has been struck against the Defiled Kingdom. I would suspect the next few years are going to be rather chaotic though."

Arriving at Lord Aldron's command tent the guards allowed them admittance and both robed men bowed in Aldron's presence.

"Gentlemen," said Aldron with a curt nod. "Good to see you. I received a brief message from the King; we are to attack at night. Is there any specific assistance or advice you might give for dealing with the Necromancers at night?"

Mistrandar replied "Only that at night the necromancers might unleash vampires if they have any amongst their servants. Your men should be prepared for more threats from above than just arrows in the darkness."

Boralays added "While sunlight is their biggest threat vampires will fall just as quickly to fire, the mages can handle that. As for the necromancers themselves, they will be no stronger at night than during the day. Defeating them will not be easy though, normally Weissland is on the defensive against their kind, where their superior numbers are not as much of an advantage."

"Very well Lord Aldron." Boralays said, bowing and turning to leave.

Mistrandar, the elf, did the same but said nothing. There was something in his attitude which showed a barely concealed dislike of Aldron. Boralays did not know why.

The two mage lords left to make preparations for the coming battle.

Midnight came, and the captains began to form up their battalions. They did it silently, and without torches, instead relying on natural night vision to prepare their battle formations. At this distance, on this cloudy night, they were impossible to see, but Aldron was not worried about that; Weissland did not fear being seen. Within an hour, the army was formed outside the city and prepared to march forward.
