Mistrandar jaw stiffened, "Very well Lord Thaendil, as long as you don't overestimate the necessesity of your actions."

The buzzing returned sharply. It seemed to reverberate throughout his body.

Something broke inside him. One of his ribs, he could not be sure. The pain was severe but he got up and continued the fight. The necromancer was playing Nathaniel’s game now; he held all of the cards. A flurry of fists and feet, and then both men found themselves crashing to the gravely ground from the slab of stone. The pain was getting worse, but the black-clad mage fought through it. He was the first one to his feet, and with a harsh kick to the gut he made sure the necromancer stayed where he was. Finding his sword, Nathaniel raised it slowly and brought it down, killing the necromancer. As he watched, the horde of zombies barely held back by the barrier collapsed.

It was over, and Nathaniel was exhausted and in great pain. This was nothing though, as four men had laid down their lives for Weissland here. Four men had given their lives for this one small chance to save their home and uphold their duty and what they believed in. Nathaniel leant against the slab, breathing heavily. He always expected these battles would show honour, heroics, glory. There was no glory here, but he was always surprised by this. Perhaps there are no heroes, only men and their enemies.

The dull pain of memory faded, only to be replaced by the very real pain of his current condition. Nathaniel began to wonder why some memories could cause just as much pain, if not more than, the present. It was the pain of the past, pain which could not be eliminated, only remembered. The buzzing was back, filling his hearing.

“You cannot defeat me!” The demon said.

That was what the demon kept saying; Nathaniel merely took it as a challenge. He would prove the demon wrong; he was very good at proving others wrong. He swept out with his arming sword, but the demon was not there anymore. Despite its considerable bulk the demon moved as fast and as agile as an elven dancer. Words curled from Nathaniel’s lips like smoke, a spell was cast. There was a guttural shout and impact as the demon fell to the ground. Nathaniel turned and watched in amusement as the constricting snake coiled around the legs of the demon, crushing its legs.

It would not last though; even now the demon was reaching down with its sword to carve into the snake which hissed in pain and anger. Nathaniel tried to think, but nothing came to mind. Whatever the demon was doing, it was making it almost impossible for the mage to think clearly. He shook his head and saw the droplets of blood fly. Hazily he put the back of his hand to his nose, a steady stream of blood there. He coughed, tasting blood. He looked down at the ground and spat, a gob of blood landed on the stone. Something was very wrong. He spluttered “What the hell? What foul magic is this?”

The demon roared as it charged “You cannot defeat me mortal! I am like a god to you insects.”

Nathaniel opened his eyes again as the buzzing went away. No bleeding nose, no blood in his mouth, and no demon. Just Nathaniel alone in the wagon again. This was beginning to be disturbing.

"This is a time of war, lord Mistrandar, the greatest war we have ever known. If there is even the slightest shred of doubt in my mind of Drakkon's innoncence, then I will allow this action to continue. Trust, in these dark times, is weakness. And I cannot afford any mistakes, any doubts; all must be certain."
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

"If you can't afford any mistakes," Mistrandar said with anger. "Why does it then seem to be that you're making one."

He lifted his hand quickly and shook his head, "I am sorry Lord Thaendil. This just seems madness to me, us torturing those we thought were friends. I guess I still do not see the facts, that Ithrain turned against us and that others may."

Mistrandar nodded and fell back in the column once more, alone with his own thoughts.

----------------------------------------------------

As they passed through the outer cottages and farms outside Fargon the column were joined by several villagers and farmers. The amount of people were nothing compared to the size of the column already, but there were a few hundred of them. Scared faces, but hopeful since they all realized that despite the fact that the undead were coming in this direction the power of Weissland was ready to defend them as they reached Asulien.

Among the people who joined them were two fellows who far from as scared as the rest. Their only current worry was to find their allies and friends. Ranorist Chrasto had changed clothing since he had left Dwarac, listening to the advice from Karte. He should of course thought of this before, but still he missed his leather armor and felt naked in his brown jacket and grey cloak. He looked at Cloudwulfe who walked with a walking stick by his side. The man looked like a peddler but Ranorist had taken his time to clean him up and fix his hair, so he looked a little more civilized. He had been worried that the man was going to be problematic, but lately he had been more sane than ever. In fact Cloudwulfe had been perfectly fine since they left Dwarac, acting entirely normal. Ranorist just hoped it was not calm before the storm.

No one gave them another looked as they joined in among the villagers and farmers. A few soldiers gave maybe Ranorist a long stare, considering his impressive height and size. Ranorist thought that if he stayed in the army he would most likely be forced to fight by the Weisslander soldiers when the undead attacked Asulien. He hoped he would find Ariakas before that.

Mordain looked back as the farmers joined the column. A dark taint moved into his mind. Something was here, but he would need Shaellana's help to seek it out. He summoned her back from her conversation with Mordus.

"Shaellana, there is someone, or something, here. Something evil. Find out whatever is generating this taint. If it is a living thing, bring it before me." he commanded.

The High Seeker bowed. "As you wish, my Lord."

With that, Shaellana moved down the column with ten Legion soldiers.

Ranorist patted Cloudwulfe on the shoulder as he saw a familiar face in the mass of people moving along in the column.

"Bana," he called out and moved forward. The young man, barely a man in Ranorist's opinion, turned and smiled greatly as he spotted Ranorist.

The two Warriors of Mjolnir gave each other a friendly hug, Ranorist towering above Bana but they gave it little thought. It was a great relief to see a Realmer again for Bana and Cloudwulfe had been little good company so far to Ranorist.

Ranorist stepped back to look at Bana. He frowned. "Still wearing the Mjolnir armor?" he asked. "Did it not give you unneccessary questions?"

"It is alright," Bana said. "As long as I stay in the rear most of the leaders of Weissland has not heard of me, even though there are a few crazy rumours going around on there being many more Realmers in the column. Some even speaks about there being a company of Mjolnir Warriors watching Mordain Thaendil's back now." Bana grinned as he spoke, he laughed.

"But," Ranorist shook his head, "the uniform marks you as a Realmer does it not give you problems?"

Bana gestured towards the people of Weissland. "They know me now. They have seen me fighting by their side when they were attacked. They consider me a friend and protector." He sighed sadly, "It's the way it should have always been between Realmers and Weisslanders."

"What of the others? Have you heard anything?"

"I met Justin in Kynair and according to him Angus had travelled back to Ordail, trying to make contact other survivours of the battle with the pirate. Me and Justin met the army here just north of Ledek. Most of the refugees from Ledek, and north of the river have fled to north-west. The refugees here are all from Ataya and the surrounding cities and towns."

"Where is Justin now?" Ranorist cut in.

"I do not know," Bana said. "I lost him when the undead and orcs attacked. Many died then, a whole cavalry force led by Peloron Galor got destroyed."

Ranorist nodded slowly.

"What about you?"

Ranorist shrugged, "I have been in Daulinen, trying to get some answers. Ariakas did not leave us any clues." Then he saw the look in the face of Bana and nodded, pointing towards Cloudwulfe who stood in the background.

"That is good," Bana said. "He is the one who matters now."

Shaellana's sight scanned through the ranks, searching their souls. All seemed normal, all seemed mortal, all seemed far from the evil that Mordain spoke of.

But then...

"You!" she shouted, pointing directly forward towards a man who stood with a Realmer in Mjolnir armour, as well as a new-commer that she did not recognise.

Without hesitation, Shaellana and the Legion warriors moved forward, shoving their way through. Shaellana had never seen a creature like this before... whether or not he had a soul, she could not tell. If he did, it was as black as night. Terrible energy surrounded him, as well as great power, a power she had never encountered. Although, in truth, his power seemed similar to her own, in a way.

With the High Seeker leading, the small force drew closer and closer to their target, the Realmer and the stranger.

((I'm assuming Ranorist isn't in Mjolnir armour? And does Cloudwulfe have a soul?))

((That is correct, Ranorist is not in Mjolnir armor. About the second question, interesting. If you had a character who could glance upon a soul of another being you would indeed only see a chaotic mass when it came to Cloudwulfe. There is not one soul, but in fact many. I am unsure on how to put this but just consider it very chaotic))

Cloudwulfe began to back away as he spotted Shaellana coming towards him with the Legion soldiers. He held his small walking stick up, as if he intended to defend himself with it. But his hands were shivering and his head shaking as if protesting to the events which were unfolding.

Bana took a step towards Cloudwulfe, uncertain who Shaellana had called out to but Ranorist grabbed his shoulder.

"We may not need to fight them," Ranorist said.

Bana nodded towards Shaellana "That woman serves Mordain. She follows him around all the time. She may be a magician, she maybe understand something about Cloudwulfe."

Ranorist risked a glance towards Cloudwulfe and called out to him. "Easy now uncle. There's no problem." Then he turned back to Shaellana coming towards them. "What is the problem?" he asked with a loud voice.

Shaellana walked right up to the man who had addressed her, not slowing at all. The Legion soldiers spread out to surround the man and his companion, the man Shaellana had pointed to.

"I am Shaellana, commander of the Seeker officer. My Lord Mordain has demanded to see this... man that you have in your company. I am here to bring him before my Lord." said Shaellana, her voice firm and unwavering.

Ranorist face froze. He looked first at Cloudwulfe, then back at Shaellana.

"Why?" he asked slowly. Bana took a step towards Cloudwulfe.

Shaellana leaned close, her eyes narrowing and her voice growing cold. "Do not play the innocent. If you did not know what this man is, then you would not be defending him. Now step aside unless you too want to be thrown before Lord Mordain."

Bana took another step towards Cloudwulfe.

Ranorist frowned as he looked down at Shaellana. Despite his size and physical power beyond men he felt this woman possessed power which he could not properly fight against with muscles or speed alone.

"You are not lay hands on him," he said with stern voice. "Whatever guilt or sin you place upon him, he's innocent unless you can prove otherwise."

"I know enough of your Lord to know that such words are empty words," Ranorist said. "It is a lie."

Bana laid a hand on Cloudwulfe's shoulder, trying to calm the man down but Cloudwulfe shrugged him off, shaking his head in a chaotic manner. He seemed to be mumbling quietly to himself, through quick breaths.

Shaellana raised her hand to the sky and launched a jet of crimson light.

"My Lord will do what he must to defend Weissland, human. That is his only goal." She took a step backwards. "But I will let him pass judgement on you himself."

-----

Mordain saw the flare. That was Shaellana's signal to him. He was about to make his way towards her, but then he turned to Justin.

"Come with me, Realmer."

Ranorist gestured towards Cloudwulfe, "Defend Weissland from what woman?" he said with anger now. "Do you treat all the people of your land like this? Pull us in like this, claiming you're simply defending Weissland. Without telling us the reasons for why we are being arrested?"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Justin simply nodded, turned his horse and followed Mordain.

"What was the signal for?" he asked. "Is it an attack of some kind?"

Shaellana remained calm. "As I have told you before, human, do not play the innocent. You do know what it is you walk in the company of, don't you?"

-----

Mordain shook his head. "No, not an attack. It is from Shaellana. Now, I do not have time to dwell here. Follow if you wish."

The Mage of Shadows did not wait for a reply. He turned and rode his horse down the column, towards Shaellana.

Ranorist looked at Cloudwulfe. No, he did not. He did not know who Cloudwulfe really was. In fact, neither him or Justin, or any other Mjolnir Warrior no matter how close they were to Ariakas, had known about him until Ariakas told Bana in Silverton and ordered him to bring him to Weissland. He knew nothing about Cloudwulfe except that he knew things which should not had been known. He had told Ranorist things, both of his past and his future and it scared Ranorist to the bones. Also, he had somekind of magical power within himself. Strong magic that was.

"No, I do not," he nodded to the Legion soldiers and the refugees. "Do these people know who they walk in company with? I am certain that there are individuals in this column, who this poor old fellow," gesturing towards Cloudwulfe, "is nothing compared to."

Bana felt weary. This was turning out badly. He called out, "We came here to help and to seek protection. If it seems the Army of Weissland is unwilling to offer us that, then we will make our leave."

-----------------------------------------------------------

Justin shrugged and followed Mordain. He understood little of what was going on, but then again he was beginning to think that it was not his part in life to understand things. Following individuals like Ariakas and Mordain had taught him that.
