A spell sphere moved over the walls, where Kaalnor stood with his men, the army reassembled and defences readied. They had received reinforcements now from Anubien itself as well as two companies of cavalry from Edaurn. The battle of Adioun had been lost. The inevitable battle of Lathor was about to begin.

The spell sphere found the commander.

"General, listen. The dark elven fleet is engaged with a fleet from Ordail. The people must be evacuated overseas immediately."

"Who are you?"

Elandir cleared his throat and changed his voice slightly, enough to make it more recognisable but not draw suspicion.

"I am Lord Arthious."

"Find the Seeker, Hurdin, or a governor perhaps. I can't help you."

Hurdin stood atop a building on a balcony, watching the horizon for the dark elf army. The evacuations had not been pleasent so far. Many people had protested, not fully realising the scale of the threat. But they had been evacuated and moved to the safety of Anubien, now.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Hurdin's head turned slighty towards the sphere as it approached. He was not startled by its presence, but did wonder who was controlling it.

"And who might you be?" he asked.

"A messenger," the spell sphere said. "Here to tell you that the fleet of Rathor is engaged in sea battle, that for a short time, overseas evacuation will be possible."

Hurdin's interests pricked at that moment. "How long do we have? It will take time to begin an evacuation, and if we're caught in the open then we'll be slaughtered! We need that battle to last."

"The battle is fairly even as far as I know. The fleet of Ordail will not retreat without command, and the dark elves are fighting aggressively. You have time, but you must act quickly if you do not want to waste the chance."

Hurdin wanted to ask more, to find out who this friend of the elves was. But time was of the essence. He simply nodded his thanks and rushed down to the street. There, he was quick to show his emblem to a good number of guards and order an evacuation.

"We must get everyone onto the ships! We have a chance to escape this death trap. Quickly, men, quickly!"

The dark elf army stopped just out of range of the high elf ranged weaponry.

With the absence of Kalon Cyrredlues, those who followed other lords had divided themselves into sections and each wore their appropriate icons. A few of the dark elf lords were also present in person.

Once more, the drums started to beat and the army began to chant.

Atop the walls, General Kaalnor and the high elven defenders waited for the dark elves to come closer, some shivering in the cold wind.

Hours had passed, and the evacuation was going far faster than Hurdin could have expected. The high elves had such discipline. They knew what was at risk, and they were doing all they could to prevent the dark fate that awaited them in Anubien.

"It won't be long now, sir. Another hour to finish evacuating the civlians, but then we'll need time to grab supplies." reported a runner.

"Death is pressing down on us, young one! No more than an hour for supplies. Tell whatever houses are left to be evacuated to take as much food they can from their homes. We need to be away from here soon." said Hurdin, his voice firm.

The dark elves stepped forward in unison, creating a thunderous noise despite their individual lightfootedness. Then they took another step. This was all just a game, for many the dark elves.

Still, people flocked to the ships. Supplies were being gathered very quickly. They would be able to leave sooner than Hurdin had hoped, but he did not know how long it would take for the dark elves to reach them.

When the dark elves had taken as many slow steps forward as they cared to, the war machines were brought to the front. Each loud drum beat signalled the catapults to fire, each chain of beats signalled a volley of bolts. The dark elves stood still, continuing to chant while only the war machines were in range, bombarding the city walls and the troops atop them.

"Sir, the dark elves have begun a bombardment of the city!" reported a guard.

"We need to get these people away from here, now!" Hurdin's voice was firm and controlling. "Get any ships that are ready to leave immediatley. And do whatever we can to get people onto the ships faster."

Kaalnor's own war machines began return fire at his order. The high elves were outnumbered once more, though their defences more than evened out the casualties. What damage they did do to the dark elf army was still small in the face of their numbers.

Still, they waited, shields up and chanting.

Behind them, three riderless wyverns emerged from the clouds, one descending in the dark elf lines, the others remaining high up and heading towards the docks.

"Wyverns!" screamed a guard, fear masking his face as the horrible beasts descended towards the docks.

"Archers, bring them down!" commanded Hurdin, his voice echoing across the docks.

From the ships, soldiers moved to arm the bolt throwers.

((You know those are mostly just cargo and passenger ships right?))

Arrows flew at the wyverns, but the few that hit did not go far through their scaly skin, falling out again as they plummetted down through the air towards the ships. These creatures were among the largest Rathor had to offer. As each touched down on a separate ship, they lashed at the masts and at the passengers on deck with their huge tails, impaling them, stinging them, throwing them overboard.

The third wyvern took flight with three riders, all carrying lit braziers and torches. At that point, the drums and the chanting ceased, and the army bellowed a war cry and started to advance, first slowly but then picking up the pace. The artillery covered them from behind, and ladders were carried to the front. The wyvern passed the wall unharmed and entered the city as the men mostly fired at the dark elf army.

Hurdin sprinted onto one of the ships, calling to the soldiers to protect the civilians and have all the ships that were ready to cast off at once. They could not wait, not any longer. He also instructed a runner to go to the General atop the walls and tell him the ships were leaving. If he and his men wanted to retreat with the ships, they would have to make their way now.

The Seeker officer launched himself onto one of the ships that the wyvern had attacked. The beast was thrashing and tearing through everything that opposed it.

"Evacuate this ship! Move to another!" commanded Hurdin.

The officer stood at one end of the ship, the furthest point from the wyvern. He lifted a bow from the floor and produced a quiver of black arrows, tipped with red, from beneath his cloak. He notched a single arrow and fired, striking the wyvern just beneath its neck. The monster recoiled and shrieked in pain; the arrows were tipped with a toxin that would work to cause the beast terrible agony before paralysing it completely.

Kaalnor ordered volley after volley at the climbing dark elves, and the high elves closest to the ladders did what they could to knock or cut them down, but the dark elves had built them with razor-sharp blades at the top, angled away from their own men but outwards onto the wall, and the hooks mostly held firmly.

When the dark elves surpassed the archers' speed and reached the top, the spears came to the front to meet them, thrusting them mercilessly back off the wall. The artillery continued to bombard the defenders, targeting the areas which were managing to repel the dark elven army.

The fighting continued. Both armies were determined. The high elves knew how much was at stake, and they did not falter. In some places, the dark elves gained a foothold on the wall but each time, more high elven troops closed in from either side and fought them off. They had assembled every available fighter, whether professional soldier, hardened veteran, or untrained militiaman. The three, now five, companies of cavalry were held in reserve - the walls were no place for them - and more reinforcements from Edaurn were on their way.

A runner arrived from the docks, bringing his message to General Kaalnor.

"I cannot abandon the men now. Leaderless, they don't stand a chance."

__________

The third wyvern flew over the city, riders dropping flaming torches onto the rooves of buildings, sometimes into the chimneys. They knew that when their capital burned behind them, the high elves would lose hope. A lone mage and a few men with buckets of water tried to put out the fires, but the wyvern riders set them quicker than they could handle.

Then, there were shrill cries from the sky, and the battle was joined by five great eagles and their riders. Lathor was their home as much as it was the high elves'.

The wounded wyvern went into a rage, flailing uncontrollably as it howled in pain. The other moved on to another ship which had started to leave, and headed towards the bridge.

Hurdin watched the beast flail around on the ship. He put away his poisoned arrows in-favour of regular ones. It was time for the kill.

Slowly, he moved forward, arrow notched in his bow. His sight was trained to the wyvern's head. He waited until the beast had noticed him, for he was the only person left on the ship. Shrieking and roaring, the monstrous beast rampaged towards him. Hurdin waited, and waited, and waited...

He fired.

His arrow stuck the beast in its right eye, driving through to its brain. The wyvern recoiled again as it fell to the deck, its life almost gone. With the last ounce of its strength, however, it knocked Hurdin with its tail. Miraculously, the Seeker officer avoided the poisonous barbs of the wyvern. However, the force of the attack sent him flying through the air and into the water.
