Brae went silent again, letting his companions speak.
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

"What about Lathaon, anyway?" Arhaina asked, wearing a grim expression. "You haven't said a word about his condition since you sent the spell sphere. Is something wrong?"

"Not only is he bleeding to death from a head wound, he's turned an ashen black. I think he is still alive, perhaps even less ethereal than before, but he doesn't have long, and..." Elandir said solemnly, "if he does come back, they will kill him for sure..."

Brae listened, not sure if he should voice his opinion. He knew that any attempts at helping the Archmage would have to be done much later as it simply was not a high priority at the present. But he also knew how much Arhaina cared for the man.

Arhaina did not reply, only looking down as she continued. She could not accept that he was lost, but she was still gravely unhappy to hear such news.

Elandir did not pursue the matter, focusing on his spell sphere for the short time it took to converse with Kaalnor, then saying "We will head directly for the Casket; I believe Cyrredlues knows its location already. If all goes well, we will have the support of the Order of the Light in this, though I do not know who their leader is since Haidas is with the army and I do not know if they will listen to me."

Hearing Elandir's words, Brae raised his head. "The Order of Light will listen to me. They're not fools."

"The Order would recognise your loyalty alone, but they do not trust or respect me and the same will likely apply to Renaulin. And in the face of Lathaon's defeat, what if they suspect that Arhaina is here to..."

"What?!" she interrupted him angrily. "How dare you even suggest such a thing!"

"... to use the Casket," he continued, ignoring the lady. "To add to this, many of the Order of the Light disagree with Mordain's methods and do not see him in the same light as Haidas does. How can you be sure that they will listen?"

"Whether or not they are loyal to Lord Mordain, they are loyal to Lord Haidas. If he trusts Lord Mordain, then it should be possible to make them see reason."

[Ithrain, Narandar and a WRG entering from Meiroi]

Narandar could see the flying undead monster up ahead, and the small group further on, on the road. He could see Ithrain and was steadily catching up, though the former council mage did not look back. He had found his target now, and was going to reach him before Narandar could possibly intervene.

--Anach enters from Meiroi--

The one known as Elandir was beneath them now, in a small company. Anach looked forward to the kill, though he knew that this would not be an easy fight. From what he had been told, the mortal Elandir was a formidable foe.

Agent One was the first to look around and see the undead thing swoop down lower. He armed himself with two blades as he cried out Ithrain's name in warning.

Elandir and Renaulin drew their own weapons in response, then so did Arhaina a second later.

A writhing bolt of energy from Ithrain's hand scattered the group.

Brae hit the ground hard after the impact of Ithrain's magic, but he was quick on his feet. He drew his sword and held a dagger poised and ready in his other hand.

-----

Anach steered the beast low, allowing Ithrain to drop to the ground. The lich brought the monster around and landed behind the group. He lowered himself to the ground.

"We seek only the one known as Elandir. The rest of you need not perish." spoke the lich, casting one of the mortals back with a bolt of fel power.

The agent stepped forward in defence of his leader, shielding Elandir from the two spellcasters as Renaulin took the blast and was knocked to the floor.

"Even if we trusted your mercy, we would not give up the one you seek."

He brandished his swords and changed his pose slightly, readying himself to attack upon the first word of magic.

"So be it."

In that instant, the two Nathremal descended. One hurled himself into the side of the Agent, taking the man to the ground and brawling with him. The other attacked the man Anach had struck with magic.

Anach raised his hands and sent cones of deathly magic straight for Elandir.

The monstrous creature charged at the remaining members of Elandir's company.

Renaulin rolled to his feet barely in time to avoid a killing blow. He brought his weapon up to defend himself but the vampire was too fast. Alone, he would have easily been slain, but Arhaina lunged at his attacker from the side with the sword Elandir had given her.

Agent One was caught by surprise; it took little effort to break his footing. Now, he had dropped his weapons and struggled to hold the Nathremal's wrists.

Elandir leapt to the side to avoid the magical attack, and swung his sword at the charging creature. It was much bigger in size than he was, but looked a lot less agile.

Ithrain moved forward towards Arhaina and Renaulin, conjuring a sphere of lightning between his hands as he did so.

As the charging monster was almost atop Elandir, a massive black bear lunged from the forests, hitting the monster and wrestling it to the ground. Korth had followed the group since their encounter long ago, and now it was time to act.

Anach summoned a sword and rushed Elandir, making a number of swings towards the elf.

The Nathremal both made a series of quick attacks against their foes.

-----

Brae rushed to the aid of Agent One, kicking the vampire aside and standing beside the Agent as he got his weapons back.

Elandir parried once, then stepped back and parried again. With such a light blade, the movements flowed easily, as if the blade encouraged the sword-arm. He was not sure if he could wound, or kill, the lich but he could turn that physical strength away from him for a time.

Arhaina's chainmail was insufficient protection against the Nathremal as it ripped through the metal. She leapt back but it was not enough to avoid the entirety of the attack. Renaulin circled behind it and swiped at its back, but the vampire's instincts were powerful, its senses acute. He missed in time to be swept backwards, slamming into a tree at the side of the road. The lightning felt like the fires of the sun, an intense cold and the stab of a spear all at once, deadened by the impact against the trunk. He found himself bound by the magic, struggling to regain control of his limbs.

The great eagle dropped down lower, almost ready to deploy his riders.

Anach kept up a good pace of attacks before blasting Elandir back with a quick burst of magic.

-----

The Nathremal lunged at Brae, but Brae was as fast as the creature. He dodged behind it and stuck his dagger in its back. That was the best shot he got though before it hurled him backwards with a powerful swipe.

-----

Korth kept the monstrous undead beast pinned to the ground, hacking away at its chest with his claws. He roared and snarled with terrible fury, striking again, and again, and again.

Elandir twisted to keep his balance. His sword helped to absorb some of the magic but the force of it still shook him. He tried a feint at the lich, switching to his off-hand in the process.

Agent One slashed at the vampire but his weapons were brushed aside and evaded.

Arhaina fought alone now. She was nowhere near as strong as the Nathremal but she was quick, and each attack she got through was a potential wound.

Seeing Arhaina fighting alone, Brae reached beneath his cloak and produced a small, black pouch. He threw it at the Nathremal with some force, hitting it in the back. The pouch erupted upon impact and sent the vampire hurtling forward.

Then Brae was back on his feet, flipping over the other Nathremal to strike it in its chest. The vampire shrieked and lunged at Brae, attacking him visciously. Brae was cut on his left arm and across his torsoe before fending the creature off.

-----

Finally, the undead monster threw Korth away from itself.

Landing with a thud, Korth rose quickly and morphed back into his elven form. He raised his hands towards the creature.

"You are nothing but an abomination of existence! Nature did not intend for you to exist, nor will I allow you to continue doing so!"

With that said, he chanted a spell and unleashed beams of healing magic against the monster.

-----

Anach vanished in a cloud of smoke, reappearing behind Elandir and cutting him across his shoulder.

"Your persistence is pathetic! I hold the power of inevitability, mortal. It is the power of death, and no matter what you do, it will claim you!"
