Thalian received the signal. "It will be impossible to turn the whole fleet around in time..." he said. "Signal them to maintain attack formation." |

"Captain, our orders are to hold position." "Damn it all! Whoever gave that man those documents... I hope they know what they're risking!" said Jaeril. |

(( ))The spell sphere moved over the Sea of Strength, spotting the battle, but then continuing onto the land. One of the ships in Thalian's fleet suddenly tipped right over and sunk below the waters. Bubbles were erupting everywhere now. A great flailing tentacle lashed out of the water, then another. The dark elves had awoken a monster. |

Jaeril's eyes, indeed the eyes of the whole crew, went wide at the sight of the titanic tentacles tearing through sea and ship alike. For a moment, she was stunned by awe and fear, but then she snapped right back to the moment. "Target that... that thing! Target it with everything!" she screamed. "And signal the Heavenly Glaive again. See if now they want to fall back!" |

More of the body came out from the waves, revealing a huge gaping maw full of massive teeth. The tentacles thrashed at everything which came within reach. One bludgeoned the front of Raven's Might, shaking even such a resilient vessel. The dark elves split into two, abandoning the centre completely and avoiding the sea monster they had woken. Thalian stared at the beast in shock; he barely registered his crew requesting orders and translating signals. In a moment of panic, the harpoon was fired, binding the flagship to the monster as the projectile pierced its body. It seemed to feel the blow but continued to attack, slowly drawing the Heavenly Glaive closer. "No! Cut the rope! Cut the damned rope!" Thalian shouted. There was a metal cord inside. It would take time. Meanwhile, bolts were being fired at every opportunity. Through the combined firepower of the three flagships, one of the tentacles fell limply, pierced several times near where it met the body. The dark elves finally pushed past the left flank, starting to circle round behind, continuing the firefight. |

Jaeril watched the harpoon hit the monster, after having recovered from the jarring of her ship. The strength of this creature was immense; a mere flail of its tentacle had hit the ship with enough force to knock several crewmen off board, including one of the Shadow Mages. "Damn it!" She hissed. "Captain?" asked her first mate, fear in his voice. "We can't abandon the Heavenly Glaive! Drive forward on our port side, unleash all forward fire on that monster. Have the side-mounted bolt throwers target the dark elves and keep them back. And tell the Shadow Mages to ready their magic!" The first mate obeyed without question; he had never lost faith in his captain. Jaeril knew what she was doing was risky, rash and rather stupid. She would need to be quick to minimize the damage to her ship, but that monster had to be destroyed! For all she knew, the dark elves could control it. And with something like that on their side, they would have control of the sea. They would be free to mount a full-scale assault. "Captain, we're ready." "Then here we go! At the least, we must buy the Heavenly Glaive enough time to get themselves free." said Jaeril, moving the ship forward towards the monster. The forward bolt-launchers hurled volley after volley towards the monster, targeting the closest tentacles. The attacks were sufficient to force the tentacles back from the ship. Their target was the monster's head. Getting there was the hard part. |

One of the tentacles wrapped itself around the rope, drawing the Glaive in faster. Admiral Matius followed Jaeril's ship. The stone launcher was almost loaded again. The bolt throwers were used at the side against the dark elf ships, providing cover for the advance. "Thalian, the flank over at port side has been overrun! The dark elves are circling round!" He thought fast, managing to look away from the monster ahead. "Have the farmost ships retreat; we'll form an arrowhead and bombard them as they come!" "How do we cut this steel rod, captain?!" "Saw at it! Hack it! I don't know; just hurry!" |

"Take down that tentacle!" shouted Captain Jaeril. The side bolt throwers turned and targetted the tentacle that had coiled itself around the Glaive's cord. Bolt after bolt pierced the tentacle, but it was not enough to bring it down. As the ship continued moving forward, the forward bolt-launchers kept up their attack. The rapid fire of the weapons was doing some damage, though not yet enough. |

For the first time since it had surfaced, the monster began to swim, using its rearmost limbs to propel itself forward at an alarming rate towards the Raven's Might. Huge jaws opened as it prepared to attack, giving the Heavenly Glaive a mighty pull to the side and almost causing it to tip over. A few of the crew would have gone overboard if not for the rails along the tops of the sides. The fleet nevertheless bravely followed the order, using oars to push the ships backward into positions and each firing volley after volley as they reached them. |

Jaeril saw the beast coming and she waited for her opertune moment. The beast was larger than even she had thought; any incorrection could fail to bring it down! Closer and closer, every second mattered... "Fire!" In that moment, the forward bolt-launchers released a quick volley, the crew behind working constantly to continue the volley. The monster was hit with a great number of critical strikes. As the volleys were fired, the Shadow Mages cast their hands to the air and invoked their magic to unleash the power of the figurehead. The raven's eyes glowed as a great stream of fire burst from its mouth, stirking the monster. Then, the mages cast a second spell, spreading a potent oil of dark origins across the surface of the water, still a good distance from the ship but right ontop of the creature. Water and beast were both consumed by fire, the fire spreading over the water. The ship began to make a sharp time, keeping the ship away from the flames as the monster burned and thrashed. |

The monster was wounded, that much was clear, but the Heavenly Glaive was still not freed and with every splash of the flailing tentacles, it was drawn closer to the monster and to the burning oil. The thing went beneath the surface of the sea but the oil still burnt there, so it lashed out at the vessel which was hurting it so, slashing at the side of the ship. The dark elves halted their straight advance and made a pincer movement to cut the head off Thalian's formation and deny the Weissland ships their chance to use a static firebase. They started to board the ships at the two points of the attack, using refined hand-to-hand skills and to fight the crew. Meanwhile, the more distant dark elf ships provided ranged support against the ships to the rear. With the Heavenly Glaive now pulled away from the other ships and the crew panicking, it was almost impossible for Thalian to give orders, though Matius had turned to attack the dark elf ships at the port side. |

"Mages, free the Heavenly Glaive!" shouted Jaeril. One of the Shadow Mages turned its attention to the Glaive, casting a spell to form an acid that began growing on the cable tethering the Glaive to the monster. The magical liquid would burn through the cable in a minute or so. |

"Alright men, abandon the rope and just fire every weapon we have against that monster!" Thalian ordered as the acid started to burn through. The crew started to carry the smaller bolt throwers to the front and fire from there. The monster continued to attack, but the tentacles would simply brush the hull, their full strength repelled once more by steel-tipped projectiles. The fire, luckily, did not spread to the Heavenly Glaive. It seemed that the monster was badly wounded and that its defeat was coming closer. Then it rose higher out of the water and sprayed streams of pitch black liquid at both flagships. It was ink, yet somewhat acidic, and the steam which rose as it touched the surfaces of the ship was highly toxic. In moments, the front of the Heavenly Glaive was coloured black and the crew nearest the front had died. The dark elves' offensive was working, though the ships at the rear of Thalian's formation had closed in to offer more support and Admiral Matius destroyed one of the boarding dark elf ships with his stone launcher. |

The monster's toxin sprayed over the side of the ship, killing a number of the crew. Jaeril's hand was struck by a part of the spray, covering three of her fingers and a good part of her palm. She recoiled from the wheel, falling to the floor and clutching her hand in agony. The first mate took over quickly, continuing the ship on its course. |

The wounded monster withdrew beneath the waves, going deep to try to put out the fire. The fire did not burn there, where the air did not reach. It seemed that Admiral Matius had tipped the balance on one side, halting the dark elf advance and starting to beat the ships back with bolt after bolt being fired. His special weapon had broken now, however. The force it needed had put too much strain on the body of the stone launcher and eventually it had snapped apart. The admiral was disappointed, but his ship was still a powerful one, nonetheless. The rope of the Heavenly Glaive's harpoon fell away as the monster sank under the surface, freeing the flagship. |

"Signal the Glaive! We must retreat!" shrieked Jaeril. Raven's Might launched a number of volleys as it moved away from the burning surface of the water. |

The Heavenly Glaive began to move backwards as well. Its crew had taken heavy losses, so it was slower and was unable to fire to its full capacity. Thalian received the signal. It was a difficult decision to make. Elandir had not properly explained why this fleet needed to hold here, and the battle was not going well, nor was Thalian certain that the mercenary could be fully trusted. He knew Elandir was the sort who would manipulate others without a second thought, to be sure of achieving his goals. Lathaon had trusted him, of course, but why had the archmage not spoken himself? Yet the words Elandir had said were clear enough. "Captain, the dark elves have us flanked and more of our ships are being boarded. What should we do?" Thalian looked around him, at the Raven's Might, the ordinary ships, the battlefield, the mainland, and the island, before coming back to the crewman. "Bring the whole formation forward. The monster seems to be gone for now and the boarded ships will delay the dark elves while our rear is exposed. We can regroup ahead, and only one turn will be required that way." |

Raven's Might followed the path of the Glaive, moving forward to regroup. "Captain! We should fall back!" said the first mate as he steered the ship forward. "No!" shouted Jaeril, clutching her hand in agony. The toxins of the monster were inflicting terrible pain upon her. Her hand had turned black and she was unable to move her fingers. "We follow command. Do as the Glaive bids!" |

The formation came forward quickly. The wind was on their side, though losses were still taken in performing the movement in any case, though the monster did not return. The dark elven ships came together quickly in pursuit once they had turned in the right direction, which took quite some time despite the superior speed of the dark elves. By that point Thalian had come to the other side, blocking the way to the passenger ships further along the sea corridor. Thalian realised that Weissland's ships no longer had a place to retreat without giving up the objective. Whether victory or defeat, the end of the battle would be final. |

Raven's Might turned sharply and released a volley into the side of a dark elf vessel. However, at the same time, a second dark elf ship approached them from the other side. Raven's Might was blind to its approach. The enemy fired; the flagship took a heavy amount of damage. Its hull was punched through in places by the bolts, though the holes were above the sea level. "Captain!" shouted the first mate in desperation. "We must..." Jaeril was growing faint, "follow... orders..." With that said, the captain of Lord Mordain's flagship lost consciousness and slipped into darkness. The pain in her hand was too much. |
