Tidurion said "Been away, but almost all of them have been within Weissland. Out of sight perhaps, but not gone. We don't know where the hell he's been or why!"

A Seeker approached Mordain, sent by Shaellana to inform him of what had transpired.

"My Lord," began the Seeker as he bowed, "the High Seeker wishes you to know that she is going to arrest Nathaniel Drakkon, for suspicion of acting against Weissland."

"What? How so?" asked Mordain.

"It is believed that Drakkon is the reason we cannot communicate with other mages across Weissland." continued the Seeker.

Mordain was about to continue when he sensed a great eruption of power, somewhere to the north-east. The maigc was foul, necromantic. He turned slowly towards that direction.

"Have the Legion form-up, and tell the rear and front guards to be ready for combat." he said.

-----

Shaellana signalled for Nathaniel to stop, which he did. The soldiers moved to stand around him. The Seekers stayed by Shaellana's side.

The High Seeker did not hesitate; she knew what she had to do. "Nathaniel Drakkon; for suspicion of acting against Weissland and being in alliance with the Dark Lord, I am placing you under arrest."
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

"Do you think he would not tell him if you asked?" Amalrith said. "It matters little. I have no inkling on where people like Mordus and Loter Arthious has been. Of course they told me, but would not a follower of Drathmor not just lie about it?"

He bent gradually closer. "Making Nathaniel Drakkon an enemy just because you suspect him of something as outragous as this, is a huge mistake."

Tidurion leant forward, fully concentrated on the conversation, showing his true intelligence and power, which was often forgotten due to his short attention span and absent-mindedness. He said "If he is innocent, then he is no enemy of mine. Of course if it should prove different, then he is an enemy of us all."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nathaniel looked at Shaellana hard. Not necassarily a harsh look, more intent and intense. It was as if it took him a few seconds to truly decide if he had heard her correctly. Slowly, he raised one foot from the stirrups and turning, jumped down from the horse.

General Bayel, with a look of pure shock on his face, growing to anger said "What the hell do you mean? You're arresting him? What's he supposed to have done, I demand to know!"

Nathaniel held up a hand to calm him. His left hand, which now that he had worked his magic a couple more times, was now healed of scaring. The remains of a tattoo could be seen there, just brief pieces which could not clearly be discerned. He said "General, leave it be." He turned to Shaellana, slowly unbuckling his belt. He passed the belt with the scabbard attached to one of the soldiers and said "If this is what you must do, then it is what is best for Weissland."

The general leant over and said "I want to be present at any trial he has, any interrogation. I--"

Nathaniel cut in "It's ok Bayel. For Weissland."

Quietly the armoured man replied "For Weissland."

Amalrith shrugged. "He might not be an enemy to you, but we might be enemies to him." Then he leaned back in his saddle, turned his back to the other mage lord and carried on with the march.

"For what it's worth, Nathaniel, I believe you are innocent. But these matters are out of my hands; we cannot afford any risks." She gestured to the soldiers who bound Nathaniel's hands behind his back.

Turning, they walked away, leading the man with them. They headed towards the middle of the column where a group of wagons were being pulled. They had been used to carry supplies, but they would also do for holding.

Tidurion ignored his departing collegue and spurred his horse onwards with the column.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

General Bayel was left in the part of the column where Nathaniel had been travelling. He could only wonder what was truly going on here, and hoped that nothing worse was going to happen. They were scattered, as normal, but while alone was where they normally operated, without the usual good lines of communication, Nathaniel was truly alone now.

Justin sat in his horse, only a few steps behind Mordain, watching the black-clother mage. Thoughts of anger constantly raised through his mind, of how he despised that elf. But it mattered little now, he had to stay at Lord Mordain's side. Fight by his side.

"Are there enemies approaching from that direction Lord Mordain?" he asked.

[Entering from Meiroi]

The mercenaries finished crossing the river, some of the slower men being caught by the pursuing force. They were just a short distance ahead of the army.

We'd better hope Mordain or some other recognises us with Ulrin's men present, Zach thought.

"From the north-east." Mordain scanned the horizon, and found that a force of what looked like mercenaries was making its way towards them. Behind, he spotted groups of undead.

The Legion was ready as he had commanded. He turned to them. "Men of the Legion! Foul creatures have come to us. Destroy the undead, do not harm the mercenaries, for now. We will deal with them when the undead are gone."

The Mage of Shadows shifted his robes into armour and summoned his sword. At the head of the Legion, he charged towards the undead, a strong number of regualr Weissland soldiers following behind.

-----

Shaellana opened the door to one of the wagons and ushered Nathaniel inside. This wagon contained nothing more than basic food supplies, but they were at the back of the wagon. She sat Nathaniel further down the wagon, away from the entrance. His hands remained bound behind his back and were tethered to a cross-bar that ran along the back wall of the wagon. Finally, a gag was firmly fitted in his mouth to prevent him invoking his magic.

"We will be investigating this as we travel. If nothing has been decided by the time we reach Asulien, then you will stand trial there."

That was all Shaellana said before leaving. She left one Seeker stationed within the wagon to watch Nathaniel and had the wagon flanked by four Seekers at all times.

((What is happening with the column? Who defends them? And has news about the enemy been brought to the rest of the army?))

Justin rode by the side of Mordain. He had pulled his sword, Fimbulanna, and gripped it tightly with one hand.

((Seekers were sent throughout the column to tell everyone to prepare for attack. The undead force isn't that big, so not much more than what I have fighting them will be needed to stop them. And the column is being defended by the rest of the army.))

Nathaniel simply nodded as Shaellana spoke to him. After she had left, he sat back and prepared himself for a long wait. He was sure General Bayel would not pursue the matter too strongly, he would not risk it. The general was too disciplined and careful for that. After all, he would not be a member otherwise. Nathaniel wondered how many others in the column were members, how many could be trusted with the secrets. If he stood trial, he would have to do something to limit the number of individuals present at that trial. It was the only way to safeguard the future.

The mercenaries could have turned away to try and expose the undead flank but none of them was thinking of that with the undead in close pursuit.

Mordain and his forces rushed past the mercenaries, engaging the undead.

The Mage of Shadow swung his sword and cut the head from a Nathremal before knocking a group of undead back with a powerful swing of his staff. Around him, the skilled and precise Legion warriors made their attacks. The undead were no match for the Legion. The Nathremal posed a challenge, but they were horribly outnumbered. This battle would not be long.

As the wagon trundled on, Nathaniel strengthened his resolve, his will. He kept the spirit as bound and gagged as he was. He walked the forsaken path, he was resigned to whatever fate that would lead him to. His thoughts turned to the sword, he had to get it back. He had to get The Forsaken Path away if he could not keep it. The sword was The Fosaken Path, the lonely road, a redeeming sinner... It was an instrument of vengeance.

The sword had to be kept away from the hands of the enemy, of that Nathaniel was sure. If all went wrong and the trial should lead to his death, he had to make sure Bayel, or someone else like them gained possession of the sword. At the very last, it had to be thrown into the sea at the very north of Weissland if the enemy could not be defeated and the country was lost.

He was a practical man, and thought about all eventualities and outcomes, but still Nathaniel was sure that Weissland would triumph eventually over the Defiled Kingdom. Even if he was not alive to see it.

A Nathremal slashed at Mordain, but its blade failed to pierce his armour. In responce, the Mage of Shadows pushed the creature back with his staff and tore his blade through its beck, decapitating it. The undead were quickly being taken down; only the Nathremal could stand against the Legion, but there were less than twenty of them left. As for the rest of the undead, they had failed to bring down a single Legion warrior.

Zach was met at the front by Narandar, now mounted on a steed.

"Who goes there?" the former standard bearer asked him. "What's going on?"

"We are warriors of Elandir, come to join with the army. But we were ambushed by undead and the traitor, Ithrain."

Zach made to continue to the more powerful leaders but Narandar stopped him. "Wait. Ithrain is here?"

"Was. Don't know where he is now."

Narandar walked the horse around in front of his path.

"So he stayed in Meiroi. Where would he go then?" he asked. "Tell me."

"North?"

"We're on the same side here. If Ithrain is nearby then you must let me at least try to turn him away from his madness... Surely there must be some reason he would be in Meiroi..."

"Turn him away from his madness?" Zach asked. "Just what are you thinking?"

"Ithrain is my brother. If he will listen to any voice of Weissland, it would be mine..."

"Sounds like suicide to me... Probably looking for Elandir. Vrack mentioned a previous encounter... I think Ithrain will follow the road Asulien and perhaps catch him there."

"Thank you."

Without warning, he rode the horse away at full speed. He was followed by a Weissland Royal Guard, one of the men who had fought alongside Rios.

Above the combat, the last remaining necromancer launched a volley of deathly power at the ranks of the living. A number of the Legion warriors fell to the power of the foul powers.

Seeing his men die before him, Mordain turned to the skies. Through will alone, he split two slits in the back of his armour, allowing him to spread his demonic wings. He carried himself into the air, speeding towards the necromancer at a great speed. Before the evil mage could respond, Mordain had torn his clawed gauntlet across the man's throat. The corpse tumbled to the earth and the remaining undead perished.

A Nathremal, claws raised, arose from behind Mordain's winged form, wings beating rapidly in blood drunk fervour. The creature drew a hand back and made to strike as it sped forward.

A foot from impact the Nathremal was flung upward and over Mordain, its body bending raggedly with a spray of ichor before falling in a wide arc to the ground, a black jagged shard protruding from its torso.

"I grow ever wearier of these attacks my friend." Mordus spake from the ground as he advanced at walking pace into the midst of the fighting.
Glory is fleeting, but obscurity lasts for eternity.
