Nathaniel spat at her. He said "Kill me, it makes no difference. The people that matter know the truth."

Shaellana clenched her fist, causing the liquid within Nathaniel to burn with increased fury. The fact that he could withstand it without telling her everything he knew impressed her to say the least.
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Nathaniel laughed "So when is the torture going to begin then?" It was bravado, it was pointless and he knew it. But saying something meaningless prevented him from saying something important.

"You wish to know true pain? You wish to know what suffering really feels like? Then I shall hand you over to someone far more cruel than I am." she did not wait for a reply. She turned and left the wagon.

Mordain was still standing outside. "Has he revealed anything to you?"

"No, my Lord." replied Shaellana. "Whatever he is keeping from us, he is determined not to let us know. Someone else is needed to draw this knowledge from him."

The Mage of Shadows sighed with regret. "I had hoped he would be spared such a fate. But what must be done, must be done." He turned to a Seeker. "Bring Lord Mordus here. I have a task for him."

Nathaniel took what time he could to regain his composure. Things always looked their bleakest before the clouds broke and the sun shone through.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

General Bayel had received word of what was going on. He only wished he could interject, get the charges dropped. But it would call too much attention to them, and even in times like this they had to remain hidden. That was how they worked, how they had done so much, without ever being known. Their enemies could not strike at them because they did not know of their existance. If Nathaniel could only hold out until they reached Asulien. Then a trial would be required. Perhaps there, if the worst came of it, Bayel could play his hand. But it had to be done carefully, he could not risk revealing the secrets to anyone who could not be trusted with them. He had to work out who could be trusted amongst those who would preside over and be present at the trial.

Mordus sat absent mindedly twiddling a stick by a fire when a Seeker approached him. He snapped the twig in one hand and looked up at the Seeker.

"Yes?" He said, and the Seeker nodded. He got himself up and followed the Seeker, eventualy navigating to Mordain.

Mordain turned to Mordus when the man arrived. "Mordus; as you know, Nathaniel Drakkon has been arrested. Shaellana has told me that he has a secret within him that he has kept hidden from all of us. I need to know what that secret is. Do what you must." Mordain paused. "His survival is not a necessity."

Mordus stood silent for a moment, the image of what might come to pass going through his head. Eventualy he gave a short nod in reply, and climbed onto the wagon, not yet decided on what to believe.

He looked intently at the form of Drakkon. Or rather, straight through, weighing up his options. He frowned and looked Nathaniel in the eye. Something felt wrong.

"I am told we have business , you and I."

"No need for the upper lip Drakkon. I haven't passed judgement on all this yet, so you need not presume my worst." He retorted and sat down opposite Nathaniel.

"I assume it goes without saying that you will not tell me, directly at least, what you know. Still, an inkling of reassurance as to your..." He chuckled slightly."...shall we say 'trustworthiness', would go a long way to settle unease. That is to say; you may yet emerge unmarred from this"

Nathaniel said "My trustworthiness? You don't know a thing about trust boy. The people that I trust are trusting me to keep to my oath, to maintain my loyalty to Weissland to the very last. I keep secrets from the likes of you because you cannot be trusted with those secrets. My loyalty is absolute, unshakeable."

"Only fools deal in absolutes Drakkon." Mordus said. "You say you do this for Weissland. As do I. What, pray tell, makes me so unworthy of knowing?"

Nathaniel laughed "You pathetic child. I don't 'deal' in absolutes. Your addled brain mistakes concepts for facts. Perhaps you have failed to realise that there is much more to life than black and white. Everything comes down to point of view." Nathaniel looked at him with a cold harshness in his eyes "And what makes you unworthy? It is simple really, you have not proven yourself to them."

Mordus sighed. "I would have thought you were above petty insults and slight of word, Drakkon. I regret that I can not reciprocate your vehemance in a heartfelt manner, but perhaps I can make due with jest."

He made a stabbing gesture toward Nathaniel's left leg with his hand. A creak resounded as a splinter like object drove clean through it, pinning it to the wooden floor of the wagon.

James walked through the column, looking for his wife. He had not spoken with her since before the attack on the refugee column, and he desperately needed to see her right then. Everything was going so poorly. There were rumors running amock throughout the army that mages were being arrested, that the Weissland force was being split in two, that there was no plan for the refugees. He felt obligated now to do something, since Mordain had told him that he was to be king, but he did not feel like a king. He felt like an idiot, and he needed comfort, reassurance. He needed Rebecca.

He found her sitting alone on the side of the road, slumped against a rock, holding the tattered remains of her dress. Her head was down and she was heaving heavily. "Rebecca?" James asked, and he rushed up to her. She looked up at him, showing her reddened and tear-soaked face.

"They died for me," sobbed Rebecca. "They died...for me..."

James sat down next to her and put his arm around her, pulling her close and allowing her to lean on his shoulder. "It's alright. Who died?"

"The ladies," said Rebecca. "The women...they died...for...me..." Rebecca was almost growing incoherent, and James pulled her tighter and wrapped his other arm around her. She continued to sob, and James held her tight, watching as the army marched past them.

Mistrandar hurried up through the column. As he passed first Andros, then later on Tidurion he ignored both of the oher mage lords. He did not stop until he found Amalrith and Boralays who rode at the very helm of the column, just a few strides behind Mordain.

"What is this I hear about the arrestation of Nathaniel Drakkon?" he said to the other mage lords. His voice was low, but intensive.

Boralays shrugged, but Amalrith answered. "It seems like the reason we have been unable to contact other mage lords..."

Mistrandar cut him off in a rash, "I know. Magical blocking."

Boralays lifted his eyebrows in surprise. "How did you know?"

Mistrandar looked puzzled before answering, "Vedgar told me. I thought he had heard it from you."

Amalrith shook his head, "We have not spoken with him, nor with any of the other mage lords except for Tidurion. But rumours are running wild now, so he could have figure it out."

Mistrandar gestured for Amalrith to carry on, which the young elf did. "Tidurion pointed out several factors which made Nathaniel Drakkon seem like the most obvious person to be behind it all."

"Tidurion claimed Nathaniel a traitor?" Mistrandar said in surprise. He had never expected the absent-minded mage lord, who in the opinion of Mistrandar was unworty of the title mage lord, to be able to make such a drastic action.

"More than that," Amalrith said. "He managed to make Shaellana believe so as well."

"That is nonsense," Boralays said with anger. "Shaellana is just taking precautions. And Tidurion is right, there are plenty of factors pointing Nathaniel out as a traitor. Let's just hope he turns out to be."

"How is that to be solved?" Mistrandar asked with a frown.

"It seems Mordus has been give the task," Boralays said with grim voice. "If Drakkon hides something the Dark Seeker will reveal it. If not, he will go free."

Mistrandar let his horse fall behind the others after a minute of silence. He knew what Mordus was capable off, and he was absolutly certain Nathaniel was not a traitor to Weissland. It was just the fact that ever since he met Nathaniel in the Pass of Kuren at the beginning of the war, there had been certain signs telling Mistrandar something about Nathaniel. About who he was. If that was true, he hoped Nathaniel would keep his mouth shut. If it was not true it could be a disaster if it got out.

Shaellana walked close to Mordain at the head of the column. She cast her eyes around, glimpsing into the hearts of those surrounding her. She saw fear; she saw confusion; she saw doubt. But she saw loyalty, loyalty to Weissland and to its leaders.

"Do you truly believe Drakkon is guilty?" asked Shaellana.

"No, I do not." replied Mordain. "But these are dark times and we cannot afford to make decisions solely on our own perceptions."

"Mordus will ruin him..."

"Then let us hope that Drakkon has sense enough to confess whatever it is he is hiding before that comes to pass."
