The dark stones of the buildings around them seemed possessed of haunting memories, as if the stones themselves were suffering. Power whispered through the air, and Mordain attempted to follow it to its source. Turning, he found that the crystals giving light to the cavern hung above the centre of the city where a grand fortress sat, dark and forboding.

"We make for the stronghold." he said, pointing as he walked towards it.
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Jessa nodded and walked after Mordain, looking towards the fortress with interest and caution.

As he passed the haunting ruins, he began to notice statues by the doors again. Had there not been the same statues where he had left Shaellana and the others?

Terrible evil was at work. He could sense it.

After a time, he stood before the massive fortress. It was contained within a vast wall, tall and thick, with but one gate allowing access. The gate, however, was closed. The wood was old, but not rotting or deprived of its strength. The fortress itself rose like a mountain; wide at the bottom, yet growing thinner as it rose. By the looks of it, there was but a single chamber at the top. And whatever it was that Mordain could sense seemed to be focussed there.

"We will need to fly to the top."

Jessa was distracted, looking around at the fortress. She said "Fly?"

Mordain allowed his demonic wings to fold out from his back, spreading them wide before her. He held forth his hand. "Yes, Jessa; fly."

Gripping her waist with his other hand, Mordain took flight and began ascending to the top of the fortress. The architecture was carved like bone. Stone faces, bearing expressions of endless torment and horror, stared out from the walls. The entire building seemed to radiate with darkness.

The top, however, was a flat platform with a stone pavillion providing ceiling. Four pillars supported the pavillion, and at the centre of the platform sat an altar formed of dark green marble. Runes too ancient to be read were inscribed upon it. And, more importantly, Gor lay on the altar, his limbs bound by chains that shackled him there and held him in a star-shape position. A dirty rag had been forced into his mouth. He was struggling, but to no avail.

Mordain landed and released Jessa before rushing over towards Gor. As he reached out to touch the chains however, he was struck by dark power. After landing, he looked up to see the robed man he had fought earlier.

"Foolish demon." he said venomously.

Mordain rose, preparing his counterattack, but was suddenly transfixed by a swirling vortex that appeared above them. Shadows raced around them, obscuring everything but the platform from view. Then, a form stepped from the darkness. It appeared as a set of black robes, a hood and cloak with nought but pure shadow within. It was featureless, and it radiated with more power than anything Mordain had encountered before.

"Pathetic creature." Its voice was ominous, sounding with power from an age long forgotten by the world. "You defy the very power that courses through your veins."

Jessa drew her sword with a look of revulsion on her face. She said "What putrefaction are you?"

The creature turned its head towards Jessa slowly. "I am more than you will ever know, girl." The creature raised its hand and invoked foul power. Eight statues, like the ones stood outside the doors of the city, stepped from the darkness. "Kill the girl."

The statues held halberds high as they moved towards Jessa, ready to strike. Mordain, however, blasted one of them into pieces. He moved to stand beside Jessa.

"Get your flith away from us, and release Gor!" roared Mordain.

The creature clenched its hand into a fist, power crackling from his fingertips. In responce, Gor howled in agony and thrashed against his bindings, though they still held firm.

"You will not command me, Mordain. Not in my domain. Not in my world." It spoke with many voices, all in unison.

"What do you want?"

In a small tempest, the creature vanished and then reappeared before Mordain. "I want the blood that runs through your veins. I want the power I bestowed upon you returned to me. I want to be whole again!"

Jessa gripped her sword tightly and raised her staff. The mage spoke the words of a spell and pointed the staff slightly at one of the approaching statues. A torrent of water was hurled at the statue, and the water quickly froze, encasing the statue in a block of ice. It was likely that the statue would break free, but it would take time. She turned her attention to the other statues, and began preparing another spell.

One of the statues made a slow swing of its halbred towards Mordain, but the Mage of Shadows blocked with his staff. He forced his foe backwards before shattering it with destructive power.

"Your ability to control the demon within you is... impressive, Mordain." said the creature.

"I can control it, and I can harness it! You will release Gor, or I will use it to destroy you." spat Mordain.

The creature laughed, or at least as close as it could, darkly. "You cannot destroy me, mortal. Not even the fabled 'Great Necromancer' could achieve my end." It turned to the robed man. "Subdue these fools."

The man leapt forward, magic flying from his hands. Mordain deflected blast after blast until he was struck and sent hurtling backwards towards the edge of the platform. Two of the statues closed in on him.

"Surrender, Mordain. My victory is inevitable; you cannot defeat the eternal." The creature walked slowly towards him as it spoke.

Jessa was speaking the words to her next spell. Her intended target was one of the statues closing on her, but seeing the statues attacking Mordain, she changed a word in the spell. As she finished speaking, a bright blue bolt of magical energy hurtled towards one of the statues like a lance. The energy hit the statue in the chest, smashing right through before beginning to dissipate. The statue slowly crumbled, falling apart in chunks from the damage.

Jessa could do little else though, as the first of the other statues reached her and swung with its halberd. She dodged lightly aside, but had to keep moving to avoid the untiring, uncompromising attacker.

Fiery, demonic power flared and the advancing statues were destroyed.

"Nothing is eternal, creature." he said as he got to his feet once more.

"Fool!" The shade moved closer. "You have no idea what I am, do you?"

The robed man went to make another attack, but stopped in responce to a gesture from the shade.

"I, Mordain, am Krodalis Thaendil, Father of Necromancy and enemy of the living." The shade's form began to grow in size, power surging about it. Gor began screaming in pain yet again. His muscles tensed and his eyes searched fruitlessly for an end to the pain. "You are my descendant, and so it is fitting that it is your blood that will allow me entrance to the mortal world once more."

More statues appeared from the darkness, pouncing upon Mordain and throwing him against the edge of the altar. Rushing forward, they pinned his arms just long enough for the robed man to draw a dagger across Mordain's skin. Blood trickled upon the altar. As it hit the altar, it moved towards Gor. Upon reaching him, the blood forced its way through his skin. Krodalis lost his form, turning into a tempest of power that flowed into Gor.

Mordain threw the statues and robed man aside. He turned and staggered back slowly, watching as the chains binding Gor fell away. He rose, but he was no longer than man Mordain had known. His eyes were black; white, iris and pupil were gone. His skin darkened, turning a malevolent shade of grey. The statues, along with the robed man, stopped fighting and fell to their knees.

"You cannot defy my power, Mordain." said Krodalis, speaking through Gor's body.

The Father of Necromancy had possessed Gor, but Mordain could sense the magic about him. It was not a permanent possession, but Krodalis was dangerous none the less. His power dwarfed that of Mordain, even with the bolstered power granted to him by the demon.

Krodalis lifted a hand and sent Mordain hurtling backwards under a torrent of foul power. He turned to Jessa and threw her aside in the same way.

"The end of all is at hand. Embrace it." roared Krodalis.

"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

Jessa had been cast aside, hitting off the stone floor and rolling to a stop. She tried to gather her wits, shake off the cobwebs from the attack. She reached for her sword, but it was nowhere near her. Finally her hand brushed over her staff and she gripped it tightly.

A crackling bolt of red lightning flew from Mordain's fingertips towards Krodalis, but the foul necromancer merely lifted his hand to meet the energy; Mordain's spell disipated.

Krodalis laughed. "You cannot defeat me with your magic, Mordain. I gave you your power, I am your power!"

The statues began their advance towards Mordain and Jessa once more. The robed man got to his feet and lunged wildly at Mordain, dagger held high and ready to strike. Then there was a brief burst of power as the Mage of Shadows summoned his sword and struck against his foe. The corpse of the robed man fell to the ground, his head rolling away from his body. Blood soaked the floor. Mordain reached down and picked up the dagger. He invoked his magic; the blade was reduced to ash in his palm. He stood deffiantly before Krodalis and pointed the tip of his sword at the ancient creature.

"Nothing is eternal, Krodalis. And I don't need my magic to strike down filth like you!" roared Mordain, rushing forward.

Krodalis unleashed a howl of rage. Magic raged about him, lashing out at everything. Mordain pushed himself through the onsalught, however, despite the agony inflicted upon him with every searing bolt.

Jessa stood, using the staff to help her. Once she was standing, she took a quick look around and saw her sword on the ground further away. Unfortunately between her and the sword were two statues rapidly approaching. She held her staff in both hands horizontally and spoke the words of a spell. With some effort shown on her face, she used her magic to lift both statues up into the air and then fling them over the wall to crash down to the ground far below.

The spell was draining, and she staggered slightly, falling down to one knee and breathing heavily.

"You... you cannot defy me!" shrieked Krodalis, focussing his power upon Mordain as the demon drew closer.

With gritted teeth, Mordain forced one foot in front of the other as he advanced through Krodalis's torrent of power. Bolts struck him, but the impacts went unnoticed as the Mage of Shadows directed all of his hatred towards Krodalis. Finally, he reached the creature and knocked him back with a powerful under-arm punch. Krodalis reeled backwards and landed against the edge of the altar. Without a moment's hesitation, Mordain rushed forward and plunged his sword deep into Krodalis's chest, straight through the heart that had once belonged to Gor.

Krodalis opened his mouth and shrieked; pure darkness erupted forth, moving into the shroud that still clung about the top of the fortress. A ghostly voice sounded as the energy passed.

"This... is far from... over... Mordain Thaendil..."

Mordain paid little attention; his wounds were great. He fell to his knees, leaning on the altar for support. Statues were closing in on him, but then, the floor dropped away to his left and Marr ascended a staircase, helping the limping Shaellana. With axe in hand, he felled the statues in a flurry of rage. Shaellana struck down one of the statues moving for Jessa with a ball of fire and hurled one of her swords at the other.

"My Lord, what..." Marr looked at Gor. "What happened?"

Shaellana moved over to Jessa slowly. "Are you alright?"

Mordain looked up at Marr. "I faced... I faced a creature; he called himself Krodalis Thaendil, and he claimed that he created necromancy."

Jessa replied "I'm... I'm fine, really. It was just when he threw me aside, it was more powerful than any magical attack I've ever taken. If my defences had not been up I think it would have snapped my neck. But there are more important things now, I'm feeling better already."
