Mordain began moving further down the road, drawn by something unseen to his companions.

Marr looked at Shaellana, puzzlement on his face. She nodded and they followed Mordain again.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Jessa Aeris followed the others. Despite the terrible events to the south and the danger which they were likely in here, she was oddly happy. It felt good to be doing something worthwhile, and more than this, it felt good to be with a group. She had spent too long in the shadows alone, too many years with allies far from her sight.

The group reached the entrance to the city. It was surrounded by a tall, thick wall, though the gate before them had been broken open long ago. Rubble and corpses littered the streets. The buildings were made from dark grey, almost black, stone. The architecture had a cold, perhaps cruel feel to it; tall buildings, laden with pointed steeples and the like.

Mordain passed through the gate to find a man slumped beside the wall. His face and hands were scarred, and he was draped in a tattered black robe. When his eyes turned upon Mordain, fear washed over him and he made to run, but Mordain brought him to the ground with a simple spell, grabbed him and held him fast.

"What is this place?" he asked.

The man struggled like a caged animal. "No, you can't be here! He's watching, He's always watching! And He's been waiting for you..."

"Who?"

"No, NO!" he kicked and screamed.

A darkness washed over them and all could sense the vast increase in power in the very air around them. The man's skin tore and blood soaked the ground as his life was stripped from him.

Shaellana, who had been looking directly at the man, screamed in horror before losing consciousness and falling to the ground.

Mordain dropped the corpse and rushed to her side. "Shaellana?"

Marr was staring at the broken remains of the man Mordian had been holding. His skin had been torn apart; bone and blood were easily visible. The horror of the event had struck him deep...

Jessa did not know what to do. She looked around but could see nothing, no attacker. But something had killed that man, and she could feel it in her skin, a crawling sensation which told her that something was deeply wrong here.

Mordain shook Shaellana gently at first. "Shaellana?" Then he began shaking her more violently, as his desperation increased. "Shaellana?!"

She flinched several times, not opening her eyes, but speaking only a few words. "Darkness... power... evil... ancient evil..."

The Mage of Shadows looked around and then a cloaked form caught his eye. Rising, he moved towards the figure. Upon seeing him, the cloaked form fled. Mordain gave chase, taking flight.

Jessa looked between the barely moving form of Shaellana and Mordain flying after some sort of cloaked figure. A brief moment of indecision and the red-haired mage ran after Mordain and whatever he was chasing, her footfalls sounding hollow and alone on the stone streets of the empty city.

Mordain sent a stream of crimson power at his foe; the impact sent the cloaked figure to the ground. Mordain descended, standing over his prey, his magic charged and ready.

"Who are you?" he asked.

"I am... your death!" shrieked the man as he turned and blasted Mordain with a bolt of dark magic.

The Mage of Shadows clasped his hands before him, summoning a barrier that he held in place to block the attack.

"You will have to do much better than that, cretin."

The man rose, dusting himself off. His robes were old and black in colour. The distinction was a strange symbol sown into the fabric...

"Foolish, Mordain. You have walked right into my Master's hands. And for this mistake, you will perish."

Jessa continued to run after Mordain and the cloaked figure. Far up ahead she could see them beginning to fight, but she needed to get closer to see properly.

Coil after coil of foul magic was thrown from the man's fingertips towards Mordain, and coil after coil was deflected by Mordain's magic. Then, the Mage of Shadows tore his hand through the air, summoning a shockwave of power that ripped the ground asunder in the path of his enemy. The cloaked man, however, leapt backwards with unnatural agility, avoiding the attack. He laughed venomously.

-----

Shaellana's eyes flickered open. "I feel... so weak..."

Gor leant close. "What did you see?"

"Power. Darkness. There's something here, all around us. It fills this entire cavern." she said, her voice wavering.

Marr took his axe in his right hand, just in case. He looked at the architecture around the doors of the buildings that filled the city. Beside each door were at least two skeletal forms, encased in the armour they had encountered on the rodes. And they all held weapons.

"This place... is evil..." were Shaellana's final words before she lost consciousness again.

As Jessa reached the fight, she spoke a number of words to raise magical defences. Stopping short, the mage began chanting a more involved spell and launched a bolt of lightning at the foe, it arched and sped towards the target.

The robed man vanished in a smog, avoiding the blast. He turned and launched his own magic back at Jessa.

Mordain dropped from the air, taking the brunt of the blast with his shoulder. The defences he had in place held, just.

"Get away, girl! His power is vast!" he snapped.

A single bolt was replaced by a continous stream of foul power as the enemy intensified his efforts to break Mordain's defences. Mordain's face contorted under the immense strain and he began pushing against the attack, putting one foot in front of the other. He advanced slowly towards his foe.

"You cannot defy me!" exclaimed the man. "This... this cannot be!"

Mordain reached the man and unleashed a roar, invoking magic that blew his attacks away. With a powerful arm, he seized the man by the throat and lifted him off the ground.

"What do you serve?" Mordain's words were fiery with wrath.

The man's reply, however, was naught but cruel laughter. A terrible eruption of power blew forth from the man, but Mordain did not release his grasp, even as the magic ravaged him.

Mordain had taken the magical attack meant for her, Jessa had seen it clearly but would never have been quick enough to dodge such a speedy attack. Still, there was no way she would simply give up. Taking one of the two throwing daggers from her belt, she spoke words of power and sent a cone of scorching flame at the enemy. As she watched the flame head towards its target, she balanced the throwing dagger in her other hand. If what she had seen before happened again, when the creature dissappeared to avoid the flame, it would reappear with a dagger coming right at it.

The man threw Mordain away from him. Mordain was weakening faster than his foe... The Mage of Shadows hit off a wall and slumped to the ground. Gritting his teeth, however, he began to rise once more and sent a blast of chaotic power towards his foe.

The man was about to vanish, to dodge Mordain's spell, when he was caught off-guard by Jessa's spell; the cone of fire hit him, burning the right side of his robe and searing what remained of his flesh. As he turned to attack her, he was struck by Mordain's blast. The demonic power cast him into a wall with such force that it cracked behind him as he hit it.

"This... isn't finished, demon..." said the man weakly. Then, he simply faded away.

Mordain looked over at Jessa. He leaned heavily on his staff. "Still no answers. Only enemies."

Jessa put away her throwing dagger and called her staff back to her hand from the ground where she had cast it aside. She nodded "An old friend once said to me mysteries do not solve themselves, and true puzzles do not reveal their solutions on a cursory glance." Jessa sighed and said "Answers are always some of the most difficult things to find my lord, but always worth striving for."

"You have wisdom, Jessa. Come, we must return to the others and see if Shaellana has recovered."

Mordain began walking back towards Shaellana, Marr and Gor, though they were out of sight for the time-being.

Jessa followed Lord Mordain back to where the others had been, although every now and then she checked over her shoulder, just in case.

Mordain rounded the corner and stopped dead in his tracks; Shaellana, Marr and Gor were nowhere to be seen. He moved slowly towards where Shaellana had lain, yet still found nothing.

"Shaellana?" he called. "Marr? Gor?"

Nothing. Then, out of the corner of his eye, he noticed something; a doorway. He was sure that statues had stood to either side of the doorway, skeletons in armour, but now there were none.

Desperation sinking in, he swept his surroundings once more. There was nothing to give hint to the fate of his companions.

Jessa looked around but could see no clue as to where the others might have gone. She searched the ground for signs of their passing, but she could not find anything of use, just dust and debris too ancient to be of help. Then she looked at the doorway and said "I thought there were statues either side of the doorway. Did you see them?"
