Kaalnor realised the seeker had succeeded.

"Retreat!" he ordered. "Fall back to the eastern gate!"

Kalon Cyrredlues saw the high elves around him being to flee, and ordered pursuit. The dark elves gave chase, the lord easily keeping up with the elves with the aid of his horse. He realised that he could not risk distancing himself too much from his own army, and turned back to where they marched through a screen of smoke. "Cowards!"

Hurdin looked to the mages. "Hasten the fire. Let it spread across the buildings close to the wall. Do what you can to stall the enemy."

One of the mages stepped forward and brought cones of fire down upon the buildings that lay near the edge of the city. Another focussed on the winds, helping the fire to spread.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

"Quickly now," Kaalnor said, urging the men along. "Leave the war machines in the middle of the road."

Kalon saw what was happening and abandoned pursuit, seeing that the way ahead was already becoming too perilous.

"Halt!" he shouted, guiding his steed slowly back to the dark elf lines. The horde surged forward a last few metres before everyone received the order. His voice was quieter now but the words would spread. "The city is set to burn. Back up; we march clockwise around the walls."

Orders from his inferiors echoed, each directly a specific action. The dark elves beyond the gate turned around as one, the men on the walls marched towards the towers and the staircases within them.

Hurdin told the mages to keep their magic in play. Everything counts right now. He watched and waited for signs of the high elves retreating.

The high elves came into sight in only a short time, with no signs of pursuing dark elves or magical resistance. However, two small groups had remained in the city and moved around the centre, where the fire was at its worst and were running down the quiet streets, one group heading for the stables and one for the graveyard.

The main dark elf army proceeded to march around to the south, parallel to the wall.

With the retreat well underway, Hurdin grabbed the attention of the surrounding mages. "We can fall back now. Our task is done."

He made his way towards the army's retreat point, the mages following after him.

The first group reached the graveyard without meeting any resistance and the two necromancers among them began methodically raising the dead. Most of the bodies were old, providing only bones, but there were a few more recently deceased high elves which could become zombies. The dark elves moved towards their next target, the central meeting point between the two locations.

Kalon Cyrredlues continued to march the army around the wall.

Hurdin stood beyond the city. He turned his eyes away from the destruction, unwilling to suffer its horror. He met the gaze of an elven warrior, who had made his way free of the city.

"All of Lathor must know what has happened here."

The man nodded.

"Go; bring word to the other cities. They must evacuate."

With only a moment's hesitation, the warrior sprinted towards a horse and rode east.

The second group reached the stables, but all of the horses had been taken.

The two groups united near the centre of the city and quickly moved eastwards, the two spellcasters helping the fires to spread behind them as they pursued the Lathorian army.

Still, Hurdin waited the arrival of the rest of the high elves. He had to speak with the general again, to know what the army would do.

The high elves reorganised themselves hastily, disbanding some companies to bring others back to full strength as more came from the city flooded through the gates. Kaalnor was at the rear, urging them all forward, eastward.

Little did they know, the dark elves in the city were only ten minutes behind them.

Hurdin saw the path that the army would be taking. Quickly, he made his way to follow them.

The small dark elven force which had remained in the city reached the gates after Kaalnor had already closed them, though the army was not long gone. It was a quick task to reopen them but time was valuable in their pursuit.

The army was moving quickly, but would not easily catch the high elves unless the smaller force managed to delay them.

Kaalnor was at the rear. He found the seeker after looking back. "There's a smaller force gaining on us, a few dark elves and a mob of undead."

The zombies and skeletons would have been slower if they were not few enough for the necromancers to enhance their speed, matching the dark elves. They were pushing the corpses hard, and some fell, but it was a small price to pay to catch up with the high elves.

"We should set the mages to work to break the spells allowing the undead to keep pace with the dark elves." suggested Hurdin.

"Yes, I think that can be done. Most of the enemy magic users must be with the rest of the army, which must still be putting out the fires. Do you know where the mages are? I've lost track of them in all this chaos."

Hurdin called a small group, no more than four, over to him. "Mages; the dark elves are fast approaching. We need you to focus your power and break the spells which grant unnatural speed to their undead minions."

The mages nodded and followed the command, quickly breaking the spell. The undead slowed.

"What's going on?!" one of the soldiers said. "Hurry them up!"

"Their mages are putting up resistance..."

"So kill them!"

Three necromancers against four mages, a difficult match. But, pressured by the soldiers, the necromancers abandoned trying to speed up the undead and attacked the mages' defenses, unleashing the power of ice. Three freezing spheres shattered against the shields, sending shards of ice out in a small explosion.

((Got to speed this up as the stuff to the south is going way too fast for my liking... Skipping to Fargon - it's past Endral and Daulinen. <_< ))

The mages fended off the necromancers for as long as it took to break away. The army escaped.

The undead were of no further use, so when the army and the small group reunited, they were disposed of. Cyrredlues would not tolerate them slowing the dark elves down.

The main defenses of Lathor were already breached. Most of the army made camp ahead of the burning city, with some sent out to raid the nearby villages and a fraction travelled south to the coast, along with Kalon himself. The ships waited, sleek, heavily armed vessels with black sails. No more than he needed, for the remaining part of his navy were to ensure his victory over Lathor.

Hurdin sought out the Commander as the army made its retreat deeper into Lathor.

"The dark elf forces have divided. Most have remained here, but a smaller force made its way to the coast. I don't know what they're up to, but if my scouts were correct, then their leader left with them. What should we do?"
