A steadily-moving river of darkness emerged from the mountains a short distance away from the edge of Adioun, at the border of Lathor. It was not long before elven eyes detected the gloomy armour plates and the numerous rows of lethal spear tips. Alarms were raised. High elven soldiers rushed to the walls, arming every available war machine, barring the gates, drawing out arrows and urging the citizens to leave their homes for safety. Upon the great towers which fortified the city and the regional border, more soldiers clustered and more weapons were armed and prepared. Orders were yelled and received, and panic was difficult to suppress. The column of dark elves split itself into chunks as it poured forth from the mountains. Each block moved outwards to make room for the next, until river had become tide and the army's frontage had increased more than tenfold. It was no raiding force. It was an army created to overwhelm the whole of Lathor. There was a single mounted warrior among them, clad in ornate plate armour with each edge upturned into sharp spikes and ridges. His shield was constucted from bones, elven and non-elven and reinforced by a sheet of metal beneath them. His sword was raised, a true monstrosity of a weapon, not by size but by nature and shape. There was no colour in his skin, his hair or even his eyes, only a dreadfully pure black and white. "Tonight we take Adioun, tomorrow we march for Anubien!" he shouted in his deep and powerful voice. "No quarter for the scum of Draleth!" A cheer rumbled across the army. "May Lathor be cleansed with their blood!" Another cheer rose up and then turned into a loud chant of war in the dark elven tongue. They continued it as they moved closer to the walls. The high elves could hear the vicious words and the meaning behind them, and they knew it. ((Would anyone like to join?)) ((Also, Chadden, check the Fargon thread if you haven't already ))EDIT: Soon, the chanting was accompanied by the steady thud of huge dark elf war drums, carted along on large wheeled platforms, and the complex rhythms of smaller, hand-held drums. For the dark elves, war and killing were an art. The beaters encouraged them into battle and put them into a lethal state of mind. It was a steady build up to the initial clash between the two forces. As they moved into range, high elf war machines let loose and dark elf war machines were brought forward and armed for the response fire. The massive bolts from atop the walls and towers could scythe through several men. The catapults hurled their projectiles at the approaching siege towers and drum platforms. Dark elves fell, though the army as a whole was largely unaffected. The sound of ropes cracking taut travelled in a great wave across the dark elven formation as their own war machines battered the walls and struck down the men atop them. Then, lights appeared near the front as the dark elves lit the braziers atop large poles like banners. These spread evenly out and more appeared further and further back. The high elven defenders would know and dread their defeat as the end of their city, not only its people. The second wave of ranged attack came from the mages of both sides. Magical projectiles flew in both directions, bolts of lightning struck the battlefield and magic weapon struck magic barrier as both sides struggled to defend themselves as well as break through the enemy defenses. The high elf mages were less numerous, and although they were well-learned in the arcane arts, their defeat was inevitable as the dark elves began to raise the dead atop the walls and the archers and mages were forced to defend themselves against their own. The dark elves did not raise their own fallen, however, out of respect for their peers and pride of their race. Those of the high elf archers which were not engaged in combat already, mainly those who stood atop the towers, made the first volley. Their superior positions gave them a better effective range than the attackers, although there were some archers inside the siege towers which could return fire. EDIT 2: Soon, the dark elf archers halted as the other troops moved forward, firing a deadly volley of arrows up at the battlements. Despite the cover, the high elf archers started quickly losing men. The protection offered by their shields protected most of the spearmen, however. "Ladders!" Cyrredlues bellowed over the drumming and chanting, and they were quickly moved to the front as the dark elves came closer to the wall and the gates. The tops possessed hooks with razor-sharp barbs on them, making attempts to dislodge the ladders quite dangerous. One of the siege towers nearby took two simultaneous direct hits from enemy bolt throwers and the ramp was splintered and blown off along with some of the dark elves within. The second bolt hit one of the main supports at the side and severed it, putting the siege tower worryingly off-balance. Then, ladders struck the ground and swung over to the tops of the wall. Dark elves climbed up quickly, some being shot down but the advance far from being halted. As they leapt onto the wall, they could see that it was already splattered with blood, and fallen zombies, skeletons and grisly remains littered the surface. They thrust outwards with their spears and spread out along the wall as more reached the top of the wall. It was the same all across the wall. The dark elves would take casualties as they climbed but once they reached the top, more and more came, overwhelming the resistance. The siege towers were the exception. As the ramp was lowered, the dark elves would fire a single volley of crossbow bolts before dropping the crossbows and charging in. It was only a short time before a ram reached the gates and began pounding them with mighty force, shaking the gates and the defenders behind. Cyrredlues waited nearby to charge through on his steed and join the fighting. |

High elven arrows flew towards the dark elf lord but his shield was raised and none wounded him. He raised his sword and swung it in quick slashing motions. He cut several in only a few moments and each felt the magic burn through him and his blood corrode his body from inside. Though short, it was an agonising death and took so very little effort on the part of Cyrredlues. On the steed, he was carving a great hole through the defending army while other dark elves poured through the gates. He was surrounded, and yet the high elves faltered, burning bodies and terror shielding him as he continued to cut down his foes. Above, the defenders were already being forced to retreat from the walls. |

Hurdin Caunn ran through the streets, towards the walls. He saw two elves trying to make their escape as a small number of dark elves descended upon them. His black cloak billowed behind him as he lunged forward, his right hand extended to blast forth the black magic he summoned. The first of the dark elves was hit by a mighty jet of dark energy. It was then that the remaining three noticed him; in the half-light, his Seeker garments allowed him to go all-but unnoticed. The elves moved to attack him, but he raised his hands to the sky and brought a shroud of impentrable darkness down upon the area. The dark elves stood confused for a moment before falling dead, one after the other, their throats cut. Hurdin dismissed the shroud and helped the surviving high elf to his feet. "Get out of here, now! Everyone must fall back; Adioun is lost." |

"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil. "It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil. One of the Last Guardians. Suck it. | |

The attack continued and the mages added more walking corpses to the army. At the gates, dark elven spears were prevailing as the high elves struggled to defend against the armoured rider in their midst, their formation in disarray. |

Hurdin rushed onto the walls, slashing at the dark elves in his path. Frantically, he grabbed at the high elves, shouting at them to fall back. He drew his blade across another foe's throat before turning to a high elf soldier. "Who is in command here?" |

"General Kaalnor, sir!" the high elf replied, pointing northwards. "Near the gatehouse!" Outside the walls, the drums continued, shaking the ground itself. The dark elves were pushing the high elves back. The nearest houses were almost in reach of the torches. |

Hurdin nodded and continued his way along the wall, leaping over the high elves and swiftly striking the dark elves as he went. He found the General still standing atop the battlements, rather than attempting to fight in the futile chaos at the gates themselves. "General; your men have to pull back, now!" exclaimed Hurdin. |

Kaalnor shook his head as he fought off dark elves. "We cannot outrun them without any obstacle in their way; we have no way of putting sufficient distance between us. Our best chance is to continue and let the civilians retreat." |

Hurdin looked out across the city. "The buildings; set them ablaze. Burn the city to give us time to escape. And it will prevent the dark elves taking the city as their own." |

"The dark elves would burn it anyway," Kaalnor said in between fighting. "Burning the city will not be enough. We need to block the roads behind us. The winds blow against us but we need the smoke to go their way." |

"We need to concentrate our magic and give the enemy something to worry about," the general said, withdrawing slightly for another soldier to take his place at the front. "While they are distracted, a subtle change of wind might go unnoticed. Then we can fall back and destroy our war machines as we set the city alight. We might be able to block the roads that way for a short time." |

Hurdin looked around in desperation, before looking back at the General and nodding. He turned and ran swiftly, leaping over friend and foe as he made his way towards the nearest mage. "Move further back, back into the city. We need to prepare a spell." The mage nodded and did as instructed. Hurdin continued his hunt for the mages. |

A captain near the gates was yelling at the soldiers to put hatred above fear and bring down the dark elf lord, but it seemed to make little difference. Those who approached simply died more quickly as they came into reach of the sword, or were trampled by Kalon's steed while more and more dark elf spearmen entered the gates. Archers atop the walls were making a few feeble attempts at hitting him from a range, but the walls were just another zone of combat where taking your eyes off the enemy cost you your life. It was only a short time before one of the torch bearers broke through and set the nearest house ablaze. The fire would spread quickly through the city, cutting off the high elf line of retreat before long. |

Hurdin had made contact with four of the mages and, seeing that the dark elves had set fire to the buildings, decided that four would have to be enough. He rushed to the area where they had gathered. "Quickly; you need to change the direction of the wind. Send the fire back towards the enemy!" he said. The mages nodded and carried out their spell. It was a sublte process, but successful nonetheless. The winds changed, moving away from the city. Hurdin looked towards the walls. It was up to the General to order the retreat now. |
