Shaellana climbed from James' arms and stood weakly beside the mages, clutching her side and wincing with pain.

"Mordain... Mordain has demon blood coursing through his veins. This darker half of him has powers beyond what any of us can hope to achieve, as you have seen. The robes he wears and his own willpower keeps the demon in-check, but when he loses himself to rage, the demon always threatens to take over. With the Dark Lord's help, the demon has taken control of Mordain far faster than it ever has before. I... I have never seen him so completely gone..." Her words were faint, though there was still strength there. "You all need to move away. And, more importantly, no matter what happens; do not help me."

She didn't even wait for a reply. She began to limp towards Mordain.

Mordain rose slowly as Shaellana approached him. Then his eyes shifted to the mages behind her. His eyes narrowed.

"Mordain," said Shaellana, clearly and firmly.

His eyes turned back to her as she approached. Fel energies began to gather in the palms of his hands...
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Nathaniel gripped the shoulder of the nearest of the two mage lords who were not moving back. His grip was firmer than one might assume. Nathaniel pulled the mage lord Vedgar back and said "You heard what she said."

Nathaniel was in no mood to let anyone cause further harm. And the look in his eyes conveyed this very clearly.

Vedgar simply nodded and quickly fell back. Borsun lingered for a few seconds, watching Mordain intently. His knuckles were white around his wooden staff. Then, he aswell, began to slowly back off.

Boralays, now standing among a few of the knights quite far from Mordain whispered to himself, "Mordain. Why did you never tell us?"

Nathaniel sighed, more out of relief that everyone had now fallen back than out of tiredness or annoyance. He only hoped that Shaellana could help Mordain.

Shaellana walked closer and closer towards Mordain as he continued to summon foul magic to him. He raised his hands, preparing to unleash a terrible wave of power.

In that moment, Shaellana fell to her knees, bowing before him. Mordain stopped, watching her closely, whilst keeping the magic within his grasp.

"My Lord, this is not you. This is not what you want. These people are not your enemies. Please, don't do this. You can stop this." said Shaellana as she raised her head to look directly into his eyes.

Mordain let his hands fall to his sides, the magic dissipating. He roared and lunged forward, grabbing Shaellana by the throat and holding her above the ground, bearing his teeth. But Shaellana made no attempts at resistance. She said nothing, made no movement; she only stared into his eyes. Mordain stared back and, after a time, he released her. Then, once again, he fell to his knees, sagging and breathing heavily.

"Shaellana... what have I done?" he asked, his voice returning to his own. The demon was gone.

Loter quickly moved along the circle when it seemed things were calming down. He eventually came upon Brae, "Did you know this?" Loter asked. "Did you know of this? Of him?"

-----------------------------------------------------------------

On the other side of the large circle, Borsun turned to Boralays. "What do you think?"

Boralays sighed, then simply shrugged, "It seems Shaellana might calm him down. We will wait it out."

"Wait it out?" Borsun asked. "Is not this proof enough that Mordain can't be trusted?"

Boralays quickly waved his hand and silenced the man, worried that the wrong ears would hear the words. A look around told him that only Amalrith, Vedgar and Nathaniel Drakkon had been close enough to hear Borsun. Nathaniel was a mage, once upon a time in the past a student of many of them but now he was also a Seeker.

Brae sighed, then simply nodded.

"They all know now, my Lord. All of this army knows your secret." said Shaellana. She moved closer to him, comforting him. "I don't know how they will react."

"I should leave. They won't trust me, not anymore. They know what I am." replied Mordain.

Shaellana took off her cloak and wrapped it around him as he allowed his wings to dissipate. "You must wait and hear them out, please."

Mordain thought it over a time before nodding. Slowly, the two of them rose and looked towards those assembled around them.

((Ariakas, which one of those posts is correct? EDIT: ok.))

Nathaniel fixed Borsun with an icy stare before saying "Trust? There are few here that can truly claim they can be trusted completely. We all have our secrets, we all have our... burdens."

Borsun frowned, "Yes. I am sure you have your secrets. I know I have black pages in my tome, but they don't turn me into a raging daemon capable of destroying us all."

Nathaniel replied "Capable of destroying us all, and yet here we all stand. Lord Mordain lost control, but he regained it."

Mordus appeared beside Nathaniel, tending to a bruised brow after all the commotion.

"I should think skin pigment and wings are the least this country should be worrying about in this hour. Mordain is still able to command, and should you meet your end by his affliction you stand no worse, because we will all most probably meet our end at the hand of the undead before long."

Borsun had been about to answer Nathaniel sharply, but when Mordus appeared and spoke his words faded. Borsun simply shook his head, in sadness rarely shown by the strong man, and sighed.

Nathaniel spoke again "A bit more depressing than I would have put it, but Lord Mordus has a point. You all saw Drathmor make an appearance, you worked together to get rid of him. He's trying to make us turn on one another, divide us. And with the defeatist attitude I've been seeing here, he's doing a bloody good job. We need to stand together."

Boralays and Vedgar looked surprised at Nathaniel following the man's statement, but Borsun burst into laughter.

Vedgar voice was fumbling, "But... Nathaniel, we lost thousands of people, miles of land, lost our capital, lost our leader Lathaon Thaendil. All this in one day, and then Mordain... then this happens to Mordain. And you complain about our defeatist attitude. Fine enough, Mordus said we were going to all perish... but I think you're too hard on the rest of us."

Borsun continued to chuckle, despite the awkward situation where Mordain and Shaellana both rose and turned to the rest of the crowd. "I like it," Borsun said. "It's good to have you here Nathaniel, it sure is."

A Seeker approached Mordain humbly, and fearfully, and cautiously handed him his staff. Mordain leaned heavily upon it as he lifted the hood of Shaellana's cloak onto his head and wrapped the cloak about his form.

He walked towards Mordus and the others, not knowing what to say.

Nathaniel tried to keep a straight face, but the laughter of Borsun was almost infectious. His face cracked into a slight smile, then a grin, followed by full blown laughter. He said "Well, at least some of us can laugh into the face of the storm."

He composed himself, cleared his throat and said "But I am serious, it seems many have simply given up. This is Weissland, Weissland! We don't just give up, no matter how bleak the situation, no matter how bad it looks. When someone pushes us, we don't just lie down and take it, we stand up and we push back!"

Mordain looked at the faces of those around him. Some were angry, some were fearful, some were curious. He looked at Shaellana for a moment before driving his way past everyone and moving over to nearby tree. There, he slumped to the ground beneath it, staring at the sky above.

"I do not believe in heroics, but I do believe in pride. We may face our demise before long, but I say we meet it, to whatever end. Meet it with fury enough to make the enemy not soon forget that once upon this soil stood Weissland, and fearful it did make them."

Mordus eyed Mordain as he sat down by a nearby tree, not knowing if he was looking at the same person he'd always known. A cold breeze swept in at them, whipping up cloaks. It seemed they all were changing, somehow, in the face of destruction.

Perhaps not changing as much as becoming more themselfs, like a flower reaching its zeanith before falling into decay. He liked the notion. It had let him believe there was something glorious in every living being. Now it reminded him of the futility of their actions. A season; decade; a thousand years; all would be forgotten and lost in the obscurity of time. He swore he would not be.
Glory is fleeting, but obscurity lasts for eternity.
