Kassal followed Nathaniel and examined the area around the rocks and the slope.

The rocks were dark grey, with moss and lichen clinging in places, sprouting from cracks and crevaces. The black-clad mage inspected the rocks carefully, looking for anything. As he looked up something caught his eye. It was a ragged piece of dark red fabric, attached to one of the jagged rocks about three feet above his head. Nathaniel said "I think I've found something."

Kassal walked over and examined the fabric Nathaniel was holding. "It's something I guess," he said.

Nathaniel looked at the torn piece of cloth he held as he replied "It's more than something Kassal. This can lead us straight to one of the people responsible for this."

"How?" asked Kassal. "It's just a piece of cloth."

Nathaniel pulled the hood of his robe up as he said with a wry smile "Well, you could say it's a kind of magic."

Nathaniel answered "The spell is designed to locate the person connected to the object used in the spell, in this case the person who owns the item of clothing this torn fabric came from. Think of it like a magical blood hound, although the spell is more related to spell spheres than scents. The only drawback is it destroys the object during the casting of the spell, so we'll only get one shot at it. I should be able to manage a range covering all of Weissland and a bit beyond though, so unless the criminal is far enough outside the country we'll know exactly where he is."

"Indeed," Nathaniel said "and such opportunities should not be ignored." The mage looked around the campsite a moment longer before walking back towards the road and the horses.

As he reached his horse he said "I have most of the supplies necessary for this spell, but it takes time to prepare and a fire will be needed. It will require patience, Kassal." The last remark could have been pointed, but Nathaniel seemed to be talking aloud rather to anyone specific.

Finally he turned to one of the Seekers and said "Fetch some firewood please, set it down in the camp. Oh, and tell the other Seekers to bring their perimeter in around the column again. I want to get moving as soon as I have finished my spell."

With nothing else to do, Kassal sat down and watched Nathaniel as the mage made his preparations.

Nathaniel sorted through his bag of belongings and muttered to himself. His horse whickered softly and stamped a foot repeatedly on the ground. Nathaniel said "Shhhh, I'm thinking."

He produced three small bottles from his bag of different shape and style and colour. Each had a stopper in the top and there were liquids within, but what they were none could say without the training of a mage. Nathaniel placed them down safely on a smooth stone near the camp fire. He returned to his packs and retrived several other items. Some were dried herbs, there was a pestle and mortar, and a leather pouch tied up tight with a piece of string. Once more he set these tools of his trade down.

Standing with his hands on his hips as he looked at the crackling fire he said "Now we're getting somewhere."

Kassal continued to watch, wondering what exactly was happening but not bothering to ask any questions as he did not want to disturb Nathaniel.

Nathaniel took a small gourd from his pack. It was a rotund brown pot made from the dried fruit shell with several runes daubed on it with some sort of paint. Something he had picked up on his travels. He placed it with the other objects and then set to work.

Kneeling beside the flat stone he took a leaf from one herb, a couple from another, and a sprinkle of something else from a container and put them in the mortar. He took the pestle and began grinding up the herbs with swift and steady movements. He said "Passiflora should work for this. Good for insomnia as well." He added the flower and continued grinding.

Once this was done he set the mix aside and selected one of the small bottles. Opening the bottle he sniffed carefully at the contents and muttered "This is on the turn, should have gotten some fresh, but it'll have to do." He added a small amount to the mixture in the mortar and proceeded to grind the mixture again.

It took some time but eventually Nathaniel had made a pulpy mixture with the consistancy of a paste. He nodded sagely as if satisfied with it and scooped it into a wider bowl. He put the piece of torn cloth into the bowl and scrunched it up and almost kneaded it until it was liberally covered in the paste. Wiping off his hands Nathaniel stood and opened the gourd's lid. He poured out a yellowish powder from it in a rough circle around him near the fire and the stone.

The mage sat down cross-legged in the circle and put the gourd away. He took the bowl and set it in front of him on the ground. Drakkon picked up the small leather pouch and said "This is where it begins, I must have silence."

Nathaniel began to chant in a low tone, the words to the spell. The ancient elven language of the magic was always strange to the ears of someone not trained in its use, but it was second nature to Drakkon.

As he spoke he made gestures with one hand, complex movements which aided the spell-casting. Magical energy started to swirl around him as he said "Vorral naraan, collil shial, torris pallanie, scorienn basa."

The chant went on, and as it did the swirling energy seemed to become thicker, until he was almost obscured by it. Nathaniel neared the end of the spell, and as he said the final few words he took a handful of the dust in the leather pouch and cast it into the fire. The fire burst upwards in so many colours that someone would struggle to name them all and at the same instant the bowl in front of Nathaniel burst into magical flame as well.

The spell disappated, the contents of the bowl were ash, and Nathaniel looked up and said "The man is in Ledek, a tavern in the poorer district. We must pack up, and move. I can track him now."

Nathaniel got up and quickly gathered his things, moving over to his horse to pack them up. He yelled out orders "Mount up and turn the column, we ride for Ledek at the gallop!"

Once he was set, Nathaniel climbed up onto his horse and checked the reins, setting a fast pace for the small force.
