((He's dead, he let the magic fill in and used his last "life energy" to cast a last powerful spell. He's just a mage, far from as powerful as the mage lord and was therefore not able to handle it))

Jessa kept step in the column beside Shaellana. She looked around and saw the refugees, the scruffy remaining soldiers, a multitude of Weisslanders from different places. All of them fleeing from their homes, and it almost broke her heart. She breathed deeply, fighting the emotion down, trying to remain calm. She said to Shaellana "The rearguard has been lost. All those lives, just gone, just like that. I wonder who they were, what their names were. I wonder if people will be left to remember their noble sacrifice."

((Lets wrap it up gentlemen. Long march to go.))

Mordus touched down with his drake at the head of the column; not bothering to dismount and instead requested a healer with his thin and strained voice.

He sat almost doubled over on the saddle. Arms burned extensively and clothing singed. Great relief spread across his face as a nearby mage, beared and robed, attened him with a restorative spell.

"Thank you." He said in his normal voice, flexing his now scarless arms to rid himself of the usual numbness left by spells on wounds. He dismounted and turned his attention to his drake. She stood attentatively by the side of the column as he checked her hide.

Several scales were missing where Gargoyles had sunk their claws and dark red blood seeped forth in places. Nothing too serious, but she would need rest.

He patted her head and signaled for her to wait until the refugees passed and then keep pace with them. She screeched shortly in aknowledgement.

He turned and whent in search of Aldron, passingly stopping to look up at the greying sky and catch a falling snowflake in his hand.

Glory is fleeting, but obscurity lasts for eternity.

Xander groaned as the dagger pushed between his armour plates. He crunched his teeth, making an audible snapping noise.

"Then you won't care if I deny you my body," he said, balancing a broken tooth filled with a pink coloured powder on his tongue. There was blood in his mouth, too.

He did not struggle, just waited to see how the disciple would react.

Kazmar'Ach made his rasping sound, the sound that had long ago been laughter.

Urden grabbed Xander by the throat, lifted him from the ground, put his other hand inside the man's mouth and tore the man's jaw from his head. He released his grip and plunged his fiery sword through the man's chest. The Undead Hunter's body fell to the ground, blood spilling onto the ground.

"Pathetic." said Urden, spitting on the corpse.

"He... would make... a... powerful servant..." said Kazmar.

"No. I have other plans for this one." He turned to the Nathremal. "Bring his body."

The vampires lifted the corpse and followed Urden over to Lord Haidas, who still lay pinned to the ground. The Dark Disciple tore the spear from Haidas's shoulder.

"This world does not belong to the living, not anymore. All that remains for you is the release of death, and the long suffering at my hand that will come first."

-----

Shaellana looked upon Jessa with a kind face. "You cannot dwell on such things right now. When this war is over, we will honour those who gave their lives to defend us. But for the present your thoughts must be on the living, not the dead. Weissland needs all of its children to be strong in these dark times."

((I agree with Mordus; we should move the march along. What would be the next area we would enter? As we've been in Ledek's Span for ages.))
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

((Well, it will be about four days to Asulien. So I'd say about one to the next fork in the river, about two more to Fargon, and one more to Asulien. I'd say we move to Fargon, as on the third day Drathmor's army could catch up.))

Night was beginning to fall over the army, and after the long day's fighting and hard marching, Aldron decided it would be better to halt the march for the day. As men and women began to sit down and rest and the army began to pitch its tents, James wandered around aimlessly amongst the troops. They all stood and saluted, respect in their eyes and affection in their voices as they said, "My lord." James returned their salutes, but his heart fell every time he did it. Which of these men were to be part of the next rearguard? Which were going to be sent to die so that he could live? James had no problem dying for Weissland, or for others, but the thought of someone else dying for him...

James returned to his tent and sat down to write a letter. When he was done, he called Darnil into the tent. The Lieutenant entered and James said, "Bring this to Lord Aldron when you wake up."

"I can bring it to him now," said Darnil, confused.

"No, no, do it when you wake up," said James.

"Uh...very well, Milord," said Darnil. "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine Darnil, thanks," said James.

"Goodnight, Milord," said Darnil, still eyeing James suspiciously. He turned to leave, but James leapt up, grabbed his sword, and smacked Darnil hard against the back of his head with the hilt.

James winced as Darnil fell to the ground. He kneeled down and felt he back of his head, feeling only a small bump, and felt his neck for a pulse. After finding a strong one, James sighed with relief, patted his Lieutenant's shoulder plate, and whispered, "Thanks for everything." James pulled off his armor quickly and threw on an old traveling cloak before quietly slipping out of his tent and disappearing south into the darkness.

Mordain was with Lord Aldron in the command tent. It was big, with a table and map sitting in the middle. Aldron and Mordain stood around the table. Two Seekers entered.

"My Lord?" they asked.

"Bring word to the other commanders. Tell them to gather in this tent. I need to speak with them all." Just as the Seekers turned to leave, he spoke again. "Be sure to find Lord Castoden."

The men nodded and left.

Mordain looked at Aldron. "Tell me, Lord Aldron; in light of the events before I left this army, where do your loyalties stand?"

"There are only two sides to this war," said Aldron. "Weissland and Drathmor, no more."

Mordain nodded. "Good." He shot a quick glance towards the tent door. "Now, before the remaining commanders arrive, I do have one matter that I would like your opinion on. The Archmage, as far as we know, is lost to this world. That leaves Weissland without a leader. Because of this, it is my duty to crown the new King of Weissland, James Castoden. Tell me, though, do you think the boy is ready for such responsibility?"

"He will be a good king," said Aldron. "He loves his men, and he will love his people. He will do everything he can to protect them. I believe he is able. I do not know if he will be willing."

Walking through the camp, a Seeker came across something suspiscious. He saw a man in shackles, but as far as he was aware the colum had no prisoners.

The Seeker approachd both the man and the guards who watched over him. "Why is this man in shackles?"

-----

Mordain was silent for a moment, thinking over Aldron's words. "Yes, but his love for his men... it can be weakness too, no only strength."

-----

In search of Lord Castoden, the Seeker entered the man's tent. He was shocked, however, to find the Lord Castoden gone and Darnil unconscious on the ground. Quickly, he called for help and two guards entered, propping Darnil up.

"Rouse him, quickly!" ordered the Seeker.

The guards splashed water over Darnil's face and shook him until he awoke.

"What happened to you?" asked the Seeker. "Has the camp been infiltrated?"

Darnil shook his head. "I don't think so." Looking around he swore silently under his breath. "I need to see Lord Aldron immediately."

After a moment's consideration, the Seeker nodded and helped Darnil to his feet.

He turned to the guards. "Sweep the camp; make sure there are no intruders." With that said, he turned and left with Darnil. "This way." he said, leading Darnil towards the command tent.

Darnil walked into the command tent and handed the letter James had given him to Lord Aldron.

"What is this?" asked Aldron, looking at it.

"It is from the Lord Castoden," said Darnil.

Aldron opened it and hurriedly read it. His eyes grew wide with shock as he read, and when he was done he said, "The Lord Castoden has gone south."

In rage, Mordain turned on Darnil, seizing him by the throat and lifting him off the ground. "You let him go! Why didn't you stop him?!"

((Darnil's a big guy...))

Darnil pulled at Mordain's hands enough so he could speak and said, "He knocked me out."
