"The archmage..." Justin said, puzzled. "As was the agreement, following the peace."

"Lord Lathaon is dead," said Peloron. "He died during the retreat from Ataya."

Justin was shocker, he did not know what to say. "I did not know that," he said, his words fading as the sentence ended. "But, who is in charge around here then?"

"Lord Aldron," said Peloron.

"My commander," Justin said, feeling he was running impatient here. He refused to show it though and stayed calm.

Nathaniel saw the tent where some of the mage lords were standing. He headed towards it at a brisk pace, with mage lord Tidurion a couple of steps behind. The camp was fairly busy, and Nathaniel had to sidestep a few soldiers to reach the tent. Tidurion got held up trying to negotiate his way through, but eventually caught up.

Nathaniel stopped in front of the mage lords and bowed slightly. He spoke hastily "My lords. There are a few things I've been wanting to speak to you about. Although, I bumped into mage lord Tidurion and he wanted to speak with you, so I can wait." He stepped aside and indicated to Niaunwe Tidurion to go ahead.

The Elven mage lord nodded to the others and smiled. He scratched his head for a moment, running his fingers through his very pale blond hair. Tidurion said "Well, I just wanted see that you were all alright really. I left with the wounded so I didn't know what was going on with the army."

Amalrith shook his head. He was still frustrated by his own failure of contacting Drairan. He sat down on a keg lying in the grass beside the tent, resting his elbows against his knees. It looked peculiar when he dressed in the mage robes, but then again Amalrith had never really liked the robes.

Borsun shook his head, "You left with the wounded? We would have needed you more at the very battle Tidurion."

He shrugged, remembering the battle in Ataya. "We are alright enough. The losses we have already received are the worse part. Sirithian Elros and Tabitha Sergares is dead. Vergen has a wounded leg which can not be healed. Boralays broke his neck, but lucky for him Andros managed to heal him before it went worse. And that is only the mage lords. We have suffered more than ever Tidurion."

He looked at the elven mage lord as he carried on, his voice dark. "And I believe even you must have heard of the Thaendil-cousins by now?"

Beside him Mistrandar sighed. Borsun had tried to keep his head up, but now, when no soldiers were nearby Borsun true emotions about their situation came forth. He shook his head, they did not need to keep numbering their casualties all the time. They should not. He looked to Nathaniel, eager to listen to what the man wanted to say.

Tidurion seemed to be crestfallen, and mumbled "Well, there were only a few healers and those Seekers to accompany the wounded. I thought it was best someone went with them and nobody else was around."

Nathaniel raised an eyebrow and gave Tidurion a suspicious look. He looked back to the other mage lords and said "I know it is not my place, but there are precious few mages left and there seems little point in not saying things which need to be said now. Do you trust Lord Castoden not to marginalise your authority or waste mages' talents now that both the Lords Thaendil are gone?"

Almost as if he was reacting on a delay Tidurion said "What happened to the Thaendil cousins?"

...A little boy sat by a stream in the hazy sunlight of the day. In the background, set against the outlines of a town were other children, laughing and playing in the field; screaming loudly in excitement and protest in the greenery of fresh wheat.

The boy sat in the shade, the looming figure of a gnarled oak hiding him from the fierce sunlight. He sat on a mossy rock, bare feet skimming the top of the neandering stream as he moved them, deep in troubled thought.

A small mound of newly turned earth lay just by the side of the rock, nestled amongst the still dew clad grass. He'd buried it without telling anyone and was far too afraid to say anything. The rabbit had been lying crippled and helpless when he found it, probably mauled by a dog as far as he could tell. The moment flashed across his mind continualy with growing concern; he bent down to pick up the creature. Just as his fingers touched the soft fur it whent limp, all life gone from its eyes. He had stood bolt upright in shock and fright, grabbed the rabbit, and ran out of the town until finding the oak.

He tried to convince himself it had nothing to do with him. That as strange as it was it was mearely a cruel coinsidence. Try as he might he could not dispell the memory of the flash of light that preceeded the rabbit's death. He hoped none had seen it. His father might disown him, or worse. The Archmage man would take him away!

He continued to sit depressed, certain that someone would find out eventualy, dreading the shame. A freak they would call him. A danger to everyone. Already he had heard the loud arguing between his father and scared villagers.

"Why are you sitting here?" A voice said from behind him.

He turned around to see a girl, clad in a simple dress with dark hair standing innocently a few feet away.

"Want to come and play?" She ventured, unsure if it was a good idea to talk to the strange boy their parents talked about in hushed voices.

"We've got a new ball. Duran got it for his birthday, it's realy good," She continued, smiling slightly in recollection.

The little boy's eyes lit up and he got to his feet.

"Ehm...ok." He said sheepishly and followed her as she turned to walk towards the other children.

The little girl glanced at the small earthen mound and looked at him quizicaly.
He paniced for a moment, "I found a dead rabbit, so I buried it." He said uneasily.

The girl smiled once again. "Oh...that was nice of you. Here," she said and handed him a large dandelion she had been holding.

"My name is Kaylyn by the way." She said

"Im Martin," Said the little boy and took the flower.

The girl giggled and ran fast into the tall wheat. The boy hesitated for a second, but ran after her, dropping the flower by accident as he too disappeared into the crops, now oblivious of his worries.

The flower lay still in the sunshine, white sap dripping slightly out of the stalk where it had been pulled from the ground. The slight breeze tossed it around, moving it a few paces.

Its colour faded, turning from green to brazen and finaly black before crumbling entirely.

Borsun looked at Tidurion and simply shrugged, "They are no longer here."

Mistrandar shook his head, his voice seemed weak, "I do not know Nathaniel. We do not know James Castoden. I know Timus Aldron, and trust that despite him being a man of sword and tactical strength, he will still understand the weight of our words."

Amalrith stood up, "You are right however Nathaniel. It's not your place to discuss these things. It's not anyones place. Talking about the situation that has not truly been unveiled to us will only worsen the situation." He gestured around themselves in a slightly cautious move, "It might be misunderstood if the wrong people found out."

--------------------------------------------------------------

Justin nodded, "Very well. We will wait." But to Bana he said, "Have a look around and see if you can find anything out. But be careful."

Nathaniel nodded "Of course. I only ask that you keep it on your minds. There is something about him, something of what he has said, that makes me cautious. But you are right Amalrith, discussing it openly could worsen the situation."

Tidurion said "Well, its not all doom and gloom."

Nathaniel looked at the Elven mage lord, who wore green robes the colour of grass in spring. Nathaniel looked back at the other mage lords and gave them a questioning look, as if to say, What's wrong with him?

Nathaniel spoke again "Do you know how the evacuations are going? Of the other cities like Nairio, Aelendak or Crint? And the towns as well."

As one of the men started to move off, Peloron said, "You, wait. Stay here until Lord Aldron is done. He should not be long." Turning to a guard, Peloron said, "Stay with these two gentlemen until I get back. Don't let them wander around; I don't want them gone when Lord Aldron is done and ready for them."

"Aye, Milord," said the guard, and Peloron turned and reentered the tent.

The Seeker lowered her hood, revealing shoulderlength black hair and a face which Mordus had a strange feeling he had seen before. Yet he could not place it definately. He eyed her for several moments whilst he tried to remember.
Surely not? It had been what felt like a lifetime ago.

"Kaylyn?" He said uncertainly. The Seeker smiled in the same radiant manner he remembered as a child. "Took you long enough. To tell the truth it was quite hard to find you, renown and infamy, whichever you prefer, asside."

"I had forgotten...now that I come to it; why were you looking?"

"Hmmm..." She looked at the fire and then back. "Curiosity. Once my parents died I wanted to get away from the humdrum of farm life. I joined the Seekers, and I heard about you. I couldn't place you at first but something sounded familiar, even with your new name. I knew it was you once I glimpsed you in Ataya, just before the attack."

Mordus shifted slightly and scratched his stubble, not realy sure why he was continuing to talk to her other than feeling some strange debt. "What then is it you seek to know?"

She sat silent for a moment. "Im not sure. Strange as it may seem you always reminded me that you can always rise above your predisposition."

"Yes, I have. Though I give little credit to myself." He said resignedly. "You remember the incidents when we were young? I was marked by something long before I started using magic. A 'predisposition' you could say."

She looked at the bottle of firewine in her hand and sniffed it, instantly withdrawing from its foul odur and handing it back to Mordus.

"I think the whole town guessed, back when we were younger. I hoped you would find a way to do good after you left for Ataya. I guess it was in vain."

Mordus drank deeply from the bottle and could feel the burning sensation mingled with anger at her words. He couldn't bring himself to react, because he knew she was right.

"What is rarely said is that as you rise above your predisposition, so it rises as well." He said, almost under his breath. He looked at her, eyes almost glazed in the firelight.

"I can't." He said plainly. She looked confusedly at him.

"Not many know the disturbing truth Kaylyn. I feel I owe you for being a friend to a scared little boy, so I will tell you, that you may perhaps pitty me less." He said and turned his eyes to the ground.

"I can not cast 'good' magic. All but the darkly derived paths of magic are closed to me. Imagine trying to heal an injured friend only to have them torn to pieces before your eyes." He continued calmly.

"The Mage Lords can not tell me why, nor I them. I do what I do because there is nothing else I can do, short of joining the enemy. I do my evil because there is yet some people who deserve good."

She looked at him in deep disappointment. "So thats it then? You just stopped trying?"

Mordus looked sternly at her. "Leave Kaylyn. You can do nothing here. Stay in my presance and it will mean your end sooner or later. Either by my hand or some other."

She got to her feet quickly and pulled her hood up, "I was a fool for thinking you'd still care." and disappeared into the myriad of tents and shadows.

Mordus drained the last of the bottle and tossed it asside, heavy intoxication finaly overtaking him. He lay down on his sleeping blanket by the fire and looked at the dying embers.

"I do..." He murmured as he slipped into the oblivion of dreamless sleep.

Justin became angry because of this, but it would do no good making trouble. He and Bana stayed put. They were in a nick of time, but had to be patient.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Crint is being evacutated as we speek. The people there will join with us," Mistrandar began.

Amalrith continued, "Aelendak and Odelen are also being evacuated. Many of the people there will take to the sea and move along the coast, the rest will cross the grasslands. It will be a long journey north to the Sirthern Crossing, but they believe it will be better than to begin moving for the bridge close to Crint."

Then both Amalrith and Mistrandar went silent, as they felt ashamed to speak anymore. Borsun was the one to break the spell, "Most of the people from Khelia made it to us. But not Raquil. It was sacrificed." He spat on the ground.

Nathaniel looked disgusted as Borsun finished speaking. He said "Sacrificed? Is that what it has come to? That we leave people behind, use them as human shields just so that the army can run away."

"Mordain Thaendil made the descision," Borsun responded with a sharp voice. "That is what it all come to. Apperently they could not have been saved anyway since Drathmor split up his forces. We first knew this when battle already raged in the Kuren pass."

Another voice, an older one appeared from around the tent. "That is what it has come to Nathaniel Drakkon." Shortly thereafter Andros came around to the other mage lords. Andros looked an old man with grey, turning into white, beard. His faces was carved by an old man's frowns though he had a sort of fatherly smile in his face, a sad smile. "These are horrible times."
