An aged creak and snap of twigs followed the meeting of ground and ancient bone between the stock and stone of Meiroi. Figures loomed in and out of the cannopy cast shadows and revealed tantalising movement; implacable and unplacable.
A leering skull, unadorned by flesh or earthly attire layed footfall once again as it emerged in a clearing, revealing the rest of its barren figure.

It gazed slowly about its surrounding, time ravaged jaw moving as if to speak but making no sound. Black glyphs adorned the ribbs and stood defiantly in the face of the light.

Two, three, a dozen; more bones traversed into the clearing, stopping to gaze with their skulls; oddly alive and aware.

Slowly they resumed their voyage, as patient as death in their navigation, keeping their course true and somber.
Glory is fleeting, but obscurity lasts for eternity.

Mordain's senses were shot with disgust as the dark taint of necromancy spread beneath him. With a fierce wave of his arm, he tore away the canopy before him with destructive magic. Below, he saw skeletal forms, advancing slowly, timelessly.

"Filthy wretches!"

He dropped to the ground before them, rising to his full height and spreading his wings. Magic crackled about his staff and his sword was summoned into his grasp.
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Light flung uppon them the figures were revealed again. They numbered legion, still and immobile in face of assault. Oddly they glared at the assailant, full of intent but bereft of action. Bone shattered and hit trunk and leaf as Mordain struck figure after figure, crushing them into debris. Still they did nothing, waiting eerily with strange acceptance as skull and torso was flung far and wide.
Glory is fleeting, but obscurity lasts for eternity.

Mordain's sword and staff hacked and slashed through the unmoving creatures until he stopped, taking a few steps back.

What are they doing?

"You would have to ask him. He keeps his past hidden, but he can be trusted, and he can help us." said Brae.

The shattered bones lay still as Mordain did the same, whole skelletons watching aimlessly on. One by one their jaws lowered, gravestone teeth revealed. Then, in unison their necks twisting and crackling in cacophony they turned their gaze to Mordain.

A loud crack, echoing back and forth filled the wood as their jaws were clamped shut at once. Only to open and murmur, one after the other, a ghastly sound that lingered amongst the trees; the sound of a dying breath, a gasp more terrible than any. Silence.

A timely wind blew over and down through the trees, moving the plants but not the dead.
Glory is fleeting, but obscurity lasts for eternity.

"Very good," Elandir said. "Captain Vrack and I will carry Arhaina on a stretcher, and you can lead on. I still don't believe I'm completely filled in on other events yet."

He sent a soldier to bring the captain.

Mordain stared back the haunting creatures. Then, he noticed Gor's dragon fly overhead. Without hesitation, he took flight, travelling beside the dragon.

"Mordain? Down there, what are-" began Shaellana.

"Leave them. They are not the enemy, but something... else."

He picked up speed again before dropping through the canopy, signalling for the dragon to follow.

As Gor landed, Shaellana found Mordain standing unnervingly still before a massive, stone archway that was all-too familiar. She walked over to him.

"This place... it looks exactly the same." she said softly.

"Only this time, it holds no fear for me." Mordain said coldly.

*

Brae only nodded and waited for them to be ready to depart.

It took only a few minutes before they were ready. Arhaina was still and unconscious on the stretcher.

"Lead on then, Brae."

Brae stood transfixed by the sight of Arhaina. She looked lifeless. But he recovered, nodded and then turned to lead the way.

He lead them west. To reach the druid, it would take little more than a few hours. West and then north. That was their route.

The figures stood still as the wind rose, slowly grinding them to fragments. Skulls vanished and yellowed remains disintigrated in the gust, borne aloft above the trees in a whirlwind of dust. Not a piece remained on the leaflitter.

The whirlwind spiraled up and drifted south, neandering on currents of air, ever whispering of the past and future;

All, issss, dussst.

Ithrain reached the southern part of Meiroi Wood. The dragon was out of sight, but he suspected that Elandir would not be on it, only nearby. His dark magic was a powerful gift, however, and with the aid of the blood from the blades of the two Royal Guards, he could discern the vague location of his target, further northward. The wyvern continued on.

Jessa Aeris had climbed down from the dragon, and slowly walked towards this strange shrine, to stand behind Mordain and his companions. She rested her staff against her shoulder, and looked around with equal measure of wonder and caution.

From the depths of the shrine before them, a darkness grew, seeking to draw them in.

"Keep your wits about you in this place; there is no telling what evil may dwell here." said Mordain.

Gor spoke to his dragon, telling the creature to await their return.

It had taken time, but Brae was now upon the glade that the druid, Korth, called home. Elandir and his companion were right behind him, with Arhaina still on the stretcher. Brae turned to them, signalling for them to be silent.

He walked into the middle of the glade. "Korth! It is I, Brae. Please, old friend, I need your help."

For a time, nothing stirred, until a black bear of exceptional size emerged from the trees. "What brings you here, young Brae?" asked the bear.

Elandir watched in astonishment as the bear spoke. Vrack almost dropped the stretcher.

Korth's nostrils twitched as he took in the scents of the others. His great head moved to watch them.

"This is Elandir, and Captain Vrack. We have brought Lady Arhaina here, in the hope that you may be able to heal her?" continued to Brae.

"Bring her over." said Korth.

Brae gestured for Elandir and Vrack to do so.

Jessa drew her sword from its scabbard, took one last glimpse of the dragon, and a glance at the sky, before walking into the deep darkness of the shrine.

The two men looked at each other, then cautiously edged forward, their eyes never leaving the bear. Those jaws looked powerful enough to snatch her up and kill her in moments.
