Half a dozen arrows were pointed at the half-orc as he boldly approached the army camp. He raised his hands and let them take him away. His two dark elf bodyguards followed. One of the agents came for him shortly after he was pushed into one of the tents. The dark elves had been taken elsewhere. The agent did not bother to introduce himself or give any friendly greeting. "Who are you and why have you come here?" The half-orc brushed away his captors with ease, standing up straight. His presence was commanding and intimidating. His voice was clear and confident. "I am Ulrin, cousin to Mehrak. I am here with news and an offer for your superiors." The agent managed to remain calm, though the other men drew blades as they heard his identity. "That half explains your dark elf friends. Tell me now why you might be worth more alive than dead." "I need to speak to Elandir. Or failing that, Zach Amakiir." "About what?" the agent asked in irritance. "I do not care to speak with unimportant people like you. Either kill me now and they will miss out on my offer, or bring me one of your leaders." The agent shrugged and left, soon to be replaced by Zach Amakiir, as the half-orc had requested. "What have you got to say to me, half-orc?" he asked. "Endral has fallen. The Shattered Sword have taken over the city," Ulrin said, grimly. He let the words settle in Zach's ears, then continued. "I came to make an alliance." "I believe I speak for Lord Daenthai and all his men when I say we have no like nor respect for your group." "Perhaps I was mistaken. Perhaps it is only Elandir who uses his brain," Ulrin said, folding his arms. "My cousin is dead. How do you think that makes me feel about you? But I think it is important that an agreement be made. Endral's fall means disaster for my men. Our enemies have grown very much stronger and so we must have allies." "What have you to offer?" "Numbers. And the services of those who Elandir would be delighted to have. With dark elves on your side, you can spy on Rathor and possibly even the Defiled Kingdom. We have lost many men to the Shattered Sword, both by death or betrayal... but together, we could still form a formidable force, don't you think?" "I do. Your proposal is interesting, but you are an enemy. I have no reason to trust you." "Perhaps not, but my deal requires little from you," Ulrin said. "Protection is a mutual thing. You get what you give. There is no risk in accepting my offer, and much to lose out on in declining it." ((Will finish this off some other time. Need to sleep.)) |

((Indeed.
))"We are not alike," Zach said. "Why did you come to us and not the Shattered Sword themselves, who do not share our dislike for Necromancy and evil-aligned races?" "The Shattered Sword do not appreciate rivals. Nor should you," Ulrin said. "I hoped that your response would be more friendly than theirs would have been. I came to you because I want to survive. There are only so many places where we might be accepted." "What are your terms?" "A safe place to stay, and your aid against our shared enemies. In return, you will have our services. I will submit to the leadership of Elandir Daenthai." "And if he dies?" "If he dies and Weissland wins its war, you will be in our situation. With nobody to turn to. Elandir's friendship with the archmage is the reason why you are the stronger group," Ulrin said. "It is in my interest to help you, so that we can still rely on your protection." Zach considered it. He was quite old, even for a half-elf, but he remembered Mehrak and his men all too clearly. It gave him reason to hesitate. "If you dare not make this deal yourself, speak to Elandir," Ulrin said, impatiently. "I will." Then he left the tent. Ulrin had decided against having men sneak in to make sure he was ready for a quick escape, should that be needed. He was confident that he would get the right answer. |

Zach re-entered some time after. Ulrin stood up. The half-elf looked up into the other's dark eyes and said solemnly "We accept your offer." They shook hands. Ulrin had a more muscled build, with large hands, and it seemed as if he might crush Zach's hand. "You contacted Elandir, then?" "Yes. He was furious about the news," Zach said. "I would not have been surprised if he had ordered for Endral to be burnt to the ground. He barely hesitated to agree to your terms." Ulrin gave a wide grin. "He was very frustrated though. He said he would speak to Mordain and Arhaina Thaendil about the problem - and Haidas, if he could." |

"I will order my men to come here then," Ulrin said. "But first, I have some information for you in advance. Cyrredlues knows your spies found his army. He has assembled the fleet of Rathor, and has begun marching troops across central Draleth at the same time." "What does he hope to achieve by assembling the fleet?" Zach asked. "I'm not sure. Perhaps he wants to protect Rathor," Ulrin suggested. "I have said all I have to say for now. Please leave me." Reluctantly, Zach left the tent, paused to look back, and continued away. |

There was a large tent. It wasn't the only one, as Elandir was too cautious to make the command tent so obvious. Zach Amakiir held the highest rank within the camp. The chain was very specific, allowing for any situation, so there was never dispute over rank. He was stood up, while five others sat, cushioned, in a semicircle in front of him. "Captains Jarlson and Vrack," he said, addressing each with their surname and a nod of acknowledgement. "Agents One and Two," he said, numbering them in the elven tongue "and Master Ulrin." Agents never had a permanent name. They hid their true identity even within the camp. Zach cleared his throat. "I have summoned you here because we have our orders and we must prepare the liberation of Endral and its citizens from the grip of our enemies." Only Captain Jarlson did not sit in silence. "You have received word from Lord Daenthai, then?" "Yes," he said. The two agents had been looking down, but now they looked straight up and met the sweeping gaze of Zach Amakiir. It was authoritative, but not harsh or unfriendly. He had their attention. "Mordain Thaendil is giving us his support in gaining the aid of the dwarves," he continued. He looked specificly at Ulrin, who, even whilst they sat down, stood out as the biggest man there, and said "Lathor is going to be evacuated, and we will not have the... aid... of the Order of the Light." ((Will finish sometime in the future...)) |

"Evacuating Lathor is a mistake," Ulrin said abruptly. "The fleet of Rathor is assembled. With most of Weissland's warships in or near Ordail, it will be a massacre." Zach had not thought of that. The realisation was a shock. Jarlson spoke again. "It sounds like you have no choice but to intercept those orders and amend them, and do so before it is too late." All five of them nodded their agreement. |

Zach knew that Jarlson was right. Mordain's orders would travel quickly, and he couldn't afford to check with Elandir or Mordain himself. He noticed his body had gone tense, and relaxed. "In that case, it will be a top priority matter. The defense of a region is more important than the recovery of a city, as I'm sure you understand. Agent One, your job is to locate whichever seeker carries the message and deliver it in his stead. I will be there to aid you in his capture, as well as to alter the message and to reproduce Mordain's seal. You know how to break it, don't you?" Zach said. The agent remained silent, but his slight smile indicated his answer. "The seeker must be captured alive. You will have soldiers and special equipment available to you," Zach said. He turned to face Jarlson. "You, along with Agent Two will travel to Dwarac and bring back a dwarven army to help with our efforts in Endral. Vrack, in my absense, you are in charge of our forces here in Meiroi. Understood?" Four men stood up and four fists thumped hearts. [Captain Jarlson and Agent Two leaving Meiroi Wood, heading for Dwarac.] [Later...] Agent one, Zach Amakiir and fifty men, a full ten percent of the army under his command, were stationed at and around the main road to Fargon. The first thirty men were scattered around in the woods and hidden, looking out for the messenger. They looked not only at the land but the sky as well. Both Zach and the agent knew from Elandir and/or research that Mordain sometimes sent messages using a raven, or that one of his seekers might have used a different method altogether. There was a mage among them too, searching for signs of conjured creatures or spell spheres. There were ten men arranged closer to the road, behind them, ready to ambush a messenger on foot or horseback. With them were both leaders. Then, further northwards, the final ten were lined up with loaded crossbows, the last line of defense. Each bolt head was made of a special silver alloy which magical weapons were often made from. Agent one had assured them that those bolts would harm even a spell sphere or ethereal creature. "It seems a bit of a waste waiting here, doesn't it?" the agent said. "Vrack told me he would send more scouts on their way southwards," Zach said. "When the messenger comes, we will know of it. It is not a waste because this is a necessary job - one which may decide the fate of an entire region." ((Chadden, do you want to join here for a bit?)) |

((Since nobody answered my question, I will bring Elandir and Arhaina in now.)) [Elandir and Arhaina entering Meiroi Wood] The great eagle flew low as Fargon came into view, some distance to the north. They followed the road. __________ "Look there! An eagle!" one of the scouts yelled, pointing up to where he had spotted them. News of his discovery passed quickly to the men further along. "Should we take it out, Captain?" one of the crossbowmen asked Zach. "No, we don't know who the riders are just yet. Ready your weapons but hold your fire. We might be able to bring them down without bloodshed." Elandir spotted the men below as the eagle came closer. He hoped the crossbowmen would not make any rash decisions as he approached, knowing that turning to avoid them would only make this more likely. There was also the problem of controlling the eagle. He had very little knowledge and experience of the creatures himself, and Arhaina was asleep. "You there! Land!" It was a faint shout from below and forward. "Land, now!" Elandir was not so sure what to do now so he repeated the word in the hope that the eagle would recognise it. It did, and the great bird swooped down to the ground in front of the crossbowmen. It was fluffing its feathers and spreading its wings as it landed, angry at the men who pointed weapons at it. "Hold your fire!" Zach ordered. "It's Elandir! Lower your weapons!" Elandir dismounted, carrying Arhaina down with him. He smiled. "Zach, what a pleasant surprise," Elandir said, beaming. Then he thought further. "What are you doing here, exactly?" Zach was staring at Arhaina in confusion. "What are you doing here, carrying a corpse around with you?" he said. "Wait a minute.... is that-?" "Arhaina Di'reine, yes. She's asleep - or perhaps unconscious - but she needs healing, as soon as possible. Tell me, where is ((Gandalf, for I much desire to speak with him)) Ainhir?" "He's back at the camp. Vrack will explain the situation when you get there," Zach said, noticing the urgency in Elandir's voice. He quickly picked one of the men to show the elf the way. Elandir gave his thanks and the two exchanged farewells before he headed off into the woods. ((Should I introduce a seeker myself, Chad?)) |

The Seeker was making his way down the road atop a black horse. He was riding swiftly; speed was his ally now. He had been given a letter by Mordain to authorise the evacuation of Lathor. The letter was within a simple envelope, sealed by a magical seal created by Mordain himself. He knew his duty. |

None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil. "It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil. One of the Last Guardians. Suck it. | |

The Seeker rode quickly past the first scouts though not unseen. The men relayed a hushed message that the Seeker had come. The road ahead made a bend around higher, rocky ground before going straight again, and the formation of crossbowmen was past that bend, out of sight. There were more men hidden near to the road before then. Vrack had indeed sent more scouts, as well as sending reinforcements for the crossbowmen. The agent remained with the first group, which the seeker was approaching, whilst Zach had walked over to the crossbowmen to check and double-check the special bolts. He stayed there after Elandir had come and gone. The first of the ten men allowed the seeker to go past, then the final three leapt out in front before the others came in from the sides and rear. The scouts were coming in as well. One of the ones in front shouted at the seeker to halt. |

The agent chose this moment to come out from the woods. The soldiers remained where they were. "It is of greater importance that your task not be carried out, if the people of Lathor are to stand any chance," the agent said. "For that reason, we cannot allow you to continue. Will you come peacefully, or must you have your explanation beforehand?" |

"Those orders you have are for the evacuation of Lathor," he replied. "We know that the fleet of Rathor is assembled and ready and that Weissland does not have a strong enough naval presence in that area to face them. If the people of Lathor are evacuated, the dark elves will attack and destroy those transport vessels and they will do it with ease. Now, would you rather have the blood of an entire region on your hands than defy your lord for a good reason, or will you come peacefully? Or, more accurately, will you come peacefully or must we stop you by force?" |
