The man lifted a finger, pointing north then he turned and walked out of view. Loter looked down the pass. "What did he, or whatever it was, mean by that? That's the route we are taking. No matter, we must move on." |

Nathaniel followed in Loter's footsteps and said "Whatever he wants, I think we will find out when we reach Kuren." As he walked, he intinctively fumbled for the hood of his cloak, but then realised that the cloak was gone, little more than a tattered and burnt loop of cloth around his neck. He pulled the loop of cloth up and over his head, looking at it for a moment and then putting it into a pouch attached to his belt. |

They carried on for around half an hour. It was still in the middle of the night. Then one of the men suddenly pointed to the moon and whisper intently. "Hold. Did anyone see that?" Loter turned and looked at the man, then in the direction he was pointing. Then his voice shook as he spoke, "Yes. It's a drake." |

Nathaniel looked up at the moon and the night sky. He saw the shape and said "You are right. But I had not heard of the enemy having drakes in their service." |

"I have," Loter said. "Although it's not like the dragons of Weissland. It can be one of ours, possible even Mordain Thaendil riding to our aid. Though it's far more likely that it is our enemies trying to hunt us down." |

Nathaniel nodded as he listened to Loter. He replied "We should move on then. The sooner we reach Kuren the better. If it is the enemy, then other advance forces cannot be too far behind. And if it is aid from Weissland, then they would likely head for Kuren as well." |

"Good point. Let's speed up," Loter said to the man who had met for the first time only around two hours ago. |

Nathaniel continued on with the small group of survivors. As he hurried, he heard the spirit finally begin to speak. She said "Where are we going? We should leave them behind, there are more important things to do." Nathaniel ignored the voice, even as it reverberated around his head. He visibly flinched as she shouted "Answer me! Did you reclaim the sword just to lose it when the Defiled Kingdom reaches this pitiful little town?" Still, Nathaniel said nothing, focusing on the road ahead, keeping up with the others and steeling himself for what was still to come. |

[[Entering from the Great Wall of Weissland]] Vardakh sat intently upon the winged drake. His mount was perched upon the upmost peak of the Mountains of Kuren, and the light of morning was beginning to pierce the dense cloud of the previous night. Before him was another drake, bearing a rider clad in black robes and steel armour beneath. A great helm sat upon the rider's head, a helm not too disimilar from that of the Dark Lord of Omens. "Report," commanded Vardakh. "The Weisslanders are making their way through the Pass of Kuren, my lord," the rider explained in a deep tone. "Good. What is their current location?" "They are resting my Lord," the other rider replied. "They are beyond the Twin Spires." Vardakh was displeased by this news. "Time is against us," he finished. "We move now!" he commanded, and the two drakes roared. Both riders were sprung into the air, as the drakes beat mercilessly at the cloud to keep their airborne. |

((The other rider must simply be mistaking then, poor work done by the guy, most likely to get killed off
And are you the dragon rider that our men spotted, or is that still Mordus?)) Loter continued to lead the men onwards, when they reached a area where a large piece of rubble and boulders had fallen out and partially covered the road he called out. "We're about halfway now." A large, gnarled tree stood to the right of the road after that, a few of the men stopped, looking at it. "That must be the oldest tree I've ever seen. What kind is it?" Such was it's obscurity that no one could tell. |

Nathaniel saw the tree, and walked passed some of the men. He said "Gentlemen, if any of us wish to live to a ripe old age such as this tree, we should keep moving. Time is against us." He walked on at a fast pace, even though the pain in his ribs was becoming more accute. |

((The dragon rider may be Mordus, myself and the rider are mounted on winged drakes.)) Vardakh felt the cool breeze on his face. Helmetless, his now-wholesome flesh was ice-cold and lacked colour. According to the scout's reports, the company was beyond the Twin Spires - Vardakh saw the two high peaks before him. |

--Enters from Ataya-- The army marched quickly, spurred on by the knowledge that the fate of those men and women still in Ataya rested on whether or not they could draw Drathmor’s forces into battle quickly. They had left early in the morning, and now, as the sun began to approach the horizon, they were finally entering the mountains after a grueling twenty-four-mile march. James rode in the vanguard, silent and stoic as he led his men towards the Pass of Kuren where he knew the fates of many of his men lay. He had fifty thousand men at his command, all of them veterans of the bloody campaign in the White Realm. The five thousand men who survived the entire war with him would be his personal detachment in the coming battle, the stalwart men who would be at the front lines with him no matter how fierce the fighting. Darnil would be with him in this vanguard. In addition, James had sixteen thousand soldiers and four thousand archers under Lord Aldron, four thousand soldiers under Lord Jenins, a thousand knights under Peloron, fifteen hundred archers under General Helios, six thousand light cavalry under General Feies, two thousand soldiers under General Valejen, three thousand archers under General Halsel, a thousand light cavalry under General Romeit, four thousand soldiers under General Cerilanis, and twenty-five hundred soldiers under General Patrions. The Lords and Generals with James had countless years of experience serving Weissland, and they were all valuable additions to his command, for although James was stoic and indeed fearsome to all those who saw him, on the inside he was being torn apart. The entire march from Ataya to the mountains had been plagued by the memory of what Rebecca had said to him on the steps of their once-happy home, how she screamed at him and slammed the door in his face. He had not returned to try to beg her forgiveness, feeling that she would not receive him and knowing that being turned away again would have been far worse than not seeing her at all. However, now, riding to what he knew could very well be his death, all James wanted to do was see her face again, feel her body pressed against his once more, smell her sweet perfume and run his hands through her hair, tell her that… “Milord.” James snapped out of his daydream for a moment and turned to look at Darnil. “What is it?” “Milord, night will be falling soon, and I do not think we should be caught in the Pass at night,” said Darnil. “If Drathmor’s forces come upon us…” “Yes, yes, I know,” said James. “Good, I just wanted to make sure that you…” “Yes, Darnil, thank you, I realized,” said James. “Of course, Milord,” replied Darnil, pulling a bit on the reins. “I’ll pass along the order to make camp.” “Thank you,” said James with a curt nod. However, as the army behind him stopped and began to make camp, the Lord Castoden could not help but be troubled by the fact that he had not noticed how dark it was getting and how close they were to entering the Pass. He had always been hailed as a brilliant tactician, one who could take in all aspects of his surroundings in order to tailor the battle to favor his army as much as possible, yet here he had almost allowed his army to enter into a prime ambush position in the middle of the night. He dismounted, handed his reins to an attendant, and made his way towards his rapidly-assembled tent. As he took off his armor and lay down on his traveling cot, he could not get over his lapse of situational awareness and wondered if he would indeed be fit for the difficult fight to come. |

((There's not necessarily any difference between drakes and dragons. To me there are so many varieties in each of the specimen that my people call both of them by the same names, although drakes are often smaller About the PM you sent Gorfang I agree. But I think we should try and get into contact with Mordus a little bit more. Also I think we should allow time for Lathaon to link up with Castoden's army since it would make sense if the Weisslander counter-attack was coordinated. )) |
