((Mordus, is your ambushing force still going to make an appearance?)) Those in the rear ranks like Nathaniel could do little but fire arrows and launch other ranged attacks at the enemy. They were too far from the combat to be of much use, and Nathaniel could see that unless the aerial duels between the mages and the leaders of the Defiled Kingdom force were resolved quickly, the Weissland forces would be forced to retreat without doing any significant damage to the enemy. |

((Jesus, am I the only one not involved in some epic duel? ))As the battle raged around him, James told his men to pass the word to prepare to fall back. He sent couriers running behind the lines to inform the officers and their bugelers so that everything would be in place when the final retreat was to commence. Peloron and his knights were holding well, and James's sword had still not yet tasted the flesh of the enemy. Finally, as the undead retreated, momentarily driven back and creating a small space between the two forces, James nodded to his own bugeler, who took up his instrument and played a loud, clear tune, the tune for retreat. As it was echoed by the other Weisslander musicians, James stepped up on top of a rock amongst the knights so they could all hear him and shouted, "Knights of Weissland! Our comrades must fall back! We have given Weissland the chance to survive for yet another day! Now let us give our brothers the same chance! Death and glory!" With that, James reached up and shoved the visor of his helmet down before leaping off the rock and rushing towards the enemy. The knights followed with a deafening warcry, sprinting across the short open space between the two armies. James was at their head, and as he neared the undead he brought his sword back in both of his hands, preparing to strike. The Weisslander knights smashed into the Undead even as the rest of the army retreated towards safety. Drathmor's forces swarmed around the attacking knights, pushing their martial prowess to the limits. As James reached the enemy lines an undead warrior rushed towards him, sword raised. James brought his sword around, and was surprised with how easily the blade cut through his opponent. The sword cut cleanly through the creature's armor and flesh, emerging out the other side as if it had just cut through butter. As James hacked cleanly through another undead soldier, he remembered that Mordain had told him when he first came to Weissland that the sword, which had been weilded by Mhari Castoden, had special abilities against the undead, and this seemed to be one of them: he could literally cut straight through them, almost as if they were not even there. |

((I'm not. And Ariakas hasn't done anything with Loter either.)) The signal had been given to retreat. The Weissland lines fell back in good order, and Nathaniel followed with them for a moment or two. Gradually he moved clear of the lines, until he was beside the rockwall of the pass. As he silently spoke words of magic, the soldiers continued on, paying no attention to him. And well they wouldn't, as he finished the spell he was concealed, shrouded in an illusion which made him appear to simply be a part of the rock. Quickly he invoked a more powerful illusion, for he was skilled in the art. This one looked like him, moved and acted like him, enough to fool anyone bar a strong magic user. Honing his skills over the years, Nathaniel had even managed to work some basic intelligence and speech into the spell. The illusion would be able to answer simple questions with his own voice. As the lines passed him, he said quietly to himself "Time to do something stupidly heroic." He set off back towards the battle with haste. |

James continued to fight, his sword making short work of countless undead as soon as they came within reach of it. Peloron was beside him, doing his best to try to keep up with James's deadly assaults. The knights were all fighting in a circle now as the forces of the Defiled Kingdom surrounded them, fighting back to back with sword and shield, defending themselves and each other and trying to survive long enough to allow their comrades to escape. |

Loter had part of the real fighting, and now he realized it was worthless to try and fight through the hordes to reach James Castoden and his knights. Instead he joined in the retreat, ignoring the small sense of shame that he felt. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mistrandar stood on top of a rocky outspring which portruded from the side of the valley. He looked down at Castoden and his knights fighting against the endless tide of undead creatures. He also looked to Thaendil and his mages fighting against Moarbrek and his creations. He also saw the Dragon rider fighting against a daemonic man. Mistrandar realized that the dragon rider truly fought for them then. Mistrandar looked to the north and thought of Ithrain. He realized that something was holding his rival mage up. His magic should have helped them out by now, maybe Ataya was already under attack. Mistrandar turned to the sky, looking past the powerful steeds of Mordus, Thaendil and Moarbrek and to the sky. He raised his arms to the sky, energy crackling between his fingers and from hand to hand. He had to do this himself. |

Nathaniel ran towards the encircled knights, his sword raised in a two-handed pose, ready to strike. It did not take him long to reach the backs of the closest undead and without pause he plunged his sword into the back of one of them. The foul creatures were pressed so close together in their clamour to attack the knights that he skewered a second one on his blade. As he pulled his sword free, they dropped, but it still cleared little space. He hacked to his left, cleaving through the shoulder of a fleshling, almost removing the limb. The vile thing turned to attack him but he slashed his sword across its neck and stabbed it twice to make sure it died. Each time his weapon struck it flared brightly on the moment of impact, the red changing from a dull burgundy to a shocking scarlet. |

Undead began to fall on the eastern side of the knights' circle, and James turned to see a blade flashing red through the early dawn light. However, he could not spare long to look, as the enemy were pressing against him. He swung his sword around in a broad arc, cutting straight through several of the undead and causing them to fall to the ground, cut in half. Some of the knights had already fallen, and their number now dwindled to less than two hundred as the enemy continued to encircle them. It was hopeless, James knew, and that was what he was counting on. The other Weisslanders needed time to escape and for Lord Aldron to reform their lines, but James had also charged hoping that there would be no retreat. There was nothing he could go back to, nothing now that Rebecca had thrown him out. All he wanted to do was die, die fighting for Weissland, and with that thought he fought with a renewed vigor. |

Nathaniel fought like a man possessed. In truth, it was more a fury which held him in it's grip, urging him to kill more of the Defiled Kingdom's minions. He dispatched a pair of skeletal warriors with powerful strokes of his sword, as he tried to clear a path to the knights. Slowly, he carved his way closer to the knights, but for every undead creature which fell to his blade, many more shambled between him and the surrounded knights. He parried a number of attacks, then hacked at the arms of his enemies, forcing them back and giving him some room. Quickly, even as he still slashed at them, he spoke the words to a spell. The magic blasted four of the undead to cinders, clearing a small path towards the knights. Nathaniel charged forward, hacking violently at outstretched claws and brandished weaons, forging a route to the knights who fought on courageously. |

((There's only so much longer I can post about us being surrounded until Vardahk is ready so this will be my last here until he gets here.)) More knights fell as the undead forces continued to press against them. They were incredible warriors, handpicked from amongst the ranks of the greatest of Weissland's soldiery, and they killed many of the enemy. However, men grow tired in combat, and no matter how stalwart and martially-skilled they are, there is a point where fatigue overcomes them, and the smallest mistake can cause their death. The number of the knights fell to less than a hundred and fifty as the battle continued to rage. |

((This is pretty much where I'm stopping as well. Waiting for the big duels to finish.)) Nathaniel hacked through the last two undead directly in front of him with growl of defiance. He nodded sharply to the closest knights then turned and lashed out at the closest undead thing within reach of his sword. The sword continued glowing and flashing in hues of red, the runes still strong with the amount of powerful magic in the area. |

Moarbrek brought his dragon higher, moving with sudden speed towards one of the eagles. With a blast of dark magic, he knocked the eagle into unconsciousness. As the creature fell, the Lich Lord's foul dragon snapped it up, riders and all, into its massive jaws. With one of his foes dead, Moarbrek continued his ascent towards Lathaon. Raising his hand, he launched another bolt of powerful magic, but Lathaon's shield took the blast and held firm. Moarbrek strengthend his resolve; rather than a blast, he launched a constant stream of sickly-green light, which struck Lathaon's shield and began to wear it down as the dragon drew closer. ----- Xalis'Kan struggled to level himself out, but he managed it none the less. He turned sharply to see Mordus drawing closer and closer, his spear held ready once more. Xalis spun in the air, disappearing in a cloud of darkness before reappearing beside the rider. With a mighty swing of his scythe, he knocked Mordus from his steed before blasting the drake yet again. ----- Ruin continued to block attacks from his demonic quarry. The demon was strong, but he was losing patience; his movements and strikes were becoming hurried and careless. The Dragon Lord blocked two more attacks before seizing his chance. As the demon swung, Ruin dropped and rolled before, rising again quickly before bringing his sword across the demon's neck, slicing it clean open. He stood, still for a time, as he sheathed his blade and the body of the demon fell to the ground. Roars sounded above and Ruin leapt into the air, allowing his dragon to pass beneath him before landing upon her back. He traversed the sky, still bringing his mighty mount down to tear through the hordes below. |

Building up his momentum Mistrandar felt the world going gradually slower around him. As the energy arced around his body, and leaped from one hand to another he could pick up every detail from the battle raging around. He could sense the fear, though stalwart discipline of the knights fighting around James Castoden. He slowly took in how the dragon rider finished off the daemon he had been fighting. He saw in slow motion how Mordus was knocked off his own steed. He could even see through the highly intricate illusion which covered Nathaniel Drakkon as the man assaulted the undead from behind. Screaming the last ancient, magical words of the spell he had prepared Mistrandar lifted his arms even highed, and as the last syllable was spoken the destructive energy was released. Blinding, cracking bolts formed as lightning was thrown from his hands and crashed into the mountain side. The valley was filled by a huge rumbling sound. |

((I assumed the ambush party joined with Rud on his way to the pass. )) Mordus was tossed bodily off his saddle and struggled to regain control as he plumeted toward the embroiled ground, cloak billowing in his wake. He closed his eyes in concentration and pointed an open palm at the ground, slowly deccelerating to a halt a few meters above the ground and undead hordes. He leapt to the ground and with much strain swung the spear in an arc, puffs of smoke errupting with every impact. Sweat beaded his palid face as he franticly beat off enough undead to afford a glimpse at the sky. His drake must not have suffered too much because in an instant it had recovered and spouted forth a putrid green cloud of miasma at the would be executioner. |

Xalis'Kan dropped to the ground where he continued his battle with the one known as Mordus. The Fallen Angel hacked and slashed with his scythe, growing angry with the arrogance of the mortal. Mordus blocked the strikes, but under each blow, Xalis could see that the man's legs were threatening to give way. ----- Moarbrek watched as boulders hurtled down the side of the mountain, crushing thousands of undead. But the Lich Lord cared not; when the battle was over, the undead would simply be raised again. The Lich Lord focussed, strengthening the stream of magic that attacked Lathaon's defences. |

Lathaon, and the eagle, suddenly turned directly towards the enemy. Speaking renewed words of magic, the archmage detached the shield from around him and curved it into a huge bowl. As the lich's magic continued to flow, he gathered it up and compressed it in a shell, before sending it flying towards his enemy's mount. He yelled out another spell, thickening the air between himself and Moarbrek until it was like a viscous sludge to move through. |
