Nathaniel nodded "Indeed. I remember the first time I saw it, over twenty years ago. The most amazing tower I'd ever seen, glinting in the sun like gold and silver and crystal. Wonderous and mysterious."

As if remembering something else he said "Could I speak with you in private Lord Mordain?"

As they arrived at the tower, Mordain waved his hand to disperse the Seekers. The four went inside and began searching for tomes.

"As you wish, Nathaniel. What troubles you?"
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Nathaniel waited until the Seekers were gone before saying "I had something of an ulterior motive for coming to Ataya." He hesitated and it was clear it was not easy for him to speak about this. Finally he said "Do you remember mage lord Sergares?"

Nathaniel stroked his beard and sighed "Tabitha and I were in a relationship. It had been on and off for years, something usually broke us up." He looked off at the tower before saying "The last time I saw her... was a few months before I left Weissland."

He bit his lip, then said "Eight years ago now, and she has a daughter who is almost eight. I need to search Tabitha's home in the city, she had a small manse. I need to know if the girl is my daughter. You see, she has her mother's platinum blond hair, and she has emerald green eyes, just like mine. Tabitha would have left proof, I know it."

The mage finished "Once we've searched the tower I want to go find her home. I have to know, I need a reason to keep holding on."

"As you wish. There is no reason to deny you such a thing. Although, a relationship with a mage lord? Surely that was not the wisest decision for an aspiring mage?"

Mordain sighed as flickers of his lost love flew through his mind. "It is often worth it, though. Better to have loved and lost- well, I'm sure you know the saying." He turned and headed into the tower with Nathaniel in toe. The Seekers were away searching and the two remained alone as they skimmed over what had been left behind in the tower. There was a silence that dragged by for a little to long before Mordain spoke again. "What if the child is indeed your's?"

"Then she has a father who will help teach her to be a powerful mage of Weissland like her mother was." Nathaniel replied simply.

"And what of your duties? What Weissland demands of its mages rarely leaves time to care for infants."

Mordain continued walking with Nathaniel down a long corridor, heading to what was seemingly a dead-end. As they approached the wall both could hear a faint hum. The Mage of Shadows pressed his palm against one of the stones and spoke a few spell words. The bricks began to twist and part to create a door.

Nathaniel replied "She's eight, my lord, not an infant. Anyway, she has servants at her mothers estate to care for her, or at my estate if I should move her there."

"As long as you understand what it is you would be getting yourself in to." He walked on a little before saying, in a quieter voice, "A child should have a father."

The room they stood in housed many tomes, ones far more important than those kept elsewhere. Within this room were the personal spell books of the great Mage Lords of the past, as well as Lathaon and Mordain's, and a few others.

Nathaniel nodded solemnly "Indeed, my lord."

Looking around the room he said "It seems the enemy were unable to find this room."

"That is unsurprising. Lord Lathaon placed the spells on the entrance himself. He only shared the words to open it, and its location, with me." He gathered up the tomes with some help from Nathaniel and carried them outside where the Seekers were waiting. "What did you find?"

"Very little, my Lord. Someone has already been through the tower."

Mordain sighed. "I had thought as much. Come, there is nothing more we can do here. Take the tomes back to our horses. Nathaniel and I will meet you later."

The Seekers left to carry out their task. Mordain turned to his companion. "Lead the way, Nathaniel."

Nathaniel nodded briefly and headed off in the direction of the city. Tabitha's manse was east of the central area of Ataya, about twenty minutes walk from the tower given the empty streets. When they arrived Nathaniel said "This is it."

It was a long building with two floors, and one end of the house turned at a right angle towards the street, so the building was L-shaped. There was a low wall surrounding the manse, covered in trailing ivy. Parts of the wall had been knocked down and lay in piles of rubble, and the straight end of the manse had suffered a hit from some projectile, crushing the roof and upper floor at one corner.

Nathaniel pushed open the iron gate and headed towards the front door. It was locked, but Nathaniel had learned a thing or two in his time. He pulled a couple of small metal objects from one of the pouches at his belt and deftly picked the lock. Stepping into the small hall before the stairs he looked around, at the doors on this floor which led off in all directions, at the furnishings of the hall. He said "Tabitha's study is upstairs, I won't be long." He pointed at one of the doors and said "There's a sitting room through there if you want to wait, my lord."

"Very well, Nathaniel." Mordain moved into the room and took in his surroundings. Truly, it was an immaculate place. He had known Mage Lord Sergares, though not very well, and certainly not as well as Nathaniel it would seem. She had been a powerful mage and a wise instructor. Her death was... regrettable. The mage order was fading far too quickly. He moved over to a bookcase and began skimming the titles, idly wondering if he would come across anything of interest.

Nathaniel headed up the stairs and into the study. It was a small room tucked away in a corner, with a window at the far end which looked out on the small garden at the rear of the property. Beneath the window was a bench built into the wall, so one could sit and look out or just feel the breeze. Along one wall was a set of bookcases, while along the opposite was blank wall and a small hearth. The desk and chair dominated much of the room and Nathaniel walked towards them.

On the desk he spotted a small wooden carving. It was a wolf sitting on its haunches howling, presumably at the moon. Sergares had used it as a paperweight for many years, and the mage ran his hand gently over the wood, feeling how the once rough carved sculpture was worn smooth. Nathaniel remembered Tabitha in that moment, her milk white skin, the sharp, angular lines of her face, the way her platinum blond hair sometimes fell across her eye. He remembered those eyes clearly, and her icy cold glare most of all when she was angry about something. Nathaniel remembered the solid, authoritative voice she used on the battlefield when blood flowed and steel clashed. But he also remembered the soft, almost purring voice she used when they were alone and together.

I remember the good times and the bad, he thought dryly. This is so foolish.

Sitting down in the chair he opened the drawers of the desk one by one, until in the bottom draw he found the book he needed, from several years ago. It was a thin journal, bound in plain black material with a red ribbon attached to the spine and tucked inside to keep place. Tabitha had always kept a journal, Nathaniel knew that she would have written here about her daughter. He opened it and flicked through the pages until he neared the time of his leaving Weissland. An earlier entry caught his eye as he flicked through.

Something is amiss. Boralays and Nathaniel are up to something, and they have others involved. I hope they are not doing something stupid, but Nathaniel has a way of finding himself in trouble. It will be the death of him I'm sure.

Checking the date Nathaniel smiled. That had been trouble, but nothing they could not handle, and when it became truly dangerous she had been one of the ones they called on to help. And Tabitha was right, Nathaniel was sure, his curiousity and need to investigate mysterious would get him killed one day. He moved on, it was not far now. He looked at a few more entries before finding one which gave him all he needed to know, and perhaps more than he wanted.

Nathaniel is gone, nobody knows where. Boralays gave him leave of indeterminate length to deal with a personal matter. That night I saw him was the last I will ever see of him, the gallant fool has finally gotten into some mystery which will kill him, I can feel it. That was almost six months ago. When Drakkon left me he said he would be gone for a time, at one point we argued. Once again we break things off but there will be no reconciliation this time, he will not return. I began seeing the Ataya noble Anorion Tolaccio again some months before my last night with Nathaniel. He wanted to marry me but I turned him down. His family will not consent to it anyway, they want him to marry a merchant's daughter for the wealth, rather than a noblewoman for prestige. I know my family would not consent to such a match either, he is too far beneath the Sergares name. Nathaniel would not have been, his name is higher in power and closer to mine. Still, I cannot waste time with such matters. I am with child and likely conceived around the time Nathaniel was still here. I used magic to be certain, with objects important to Nathaniel and Anorion as focal points. The child is Anorion's but I will raise my child alone. I am not going to tell him, and weaken my child's claim to my estate and lands.

Nathaniel closed the book with a sigh and replaced it in the drawer. He left silently and headed downstairs, his hood up and covering his face.

Mordain felt that the situation had not gone as Nathaniel had hoped, yet if the man wanted to speak further of it then he would. There was no need to press the matter, and nor was it any of Mordain's business to do so.

"Very well."

The pair moved back through the city towards the Seekers, who waited with the horses.
