Ariakas finally reached Mordain when the undead was halted by the spell cast by the mage.

"Mordain!" he cried out. "Where is your cousin?"

((K, I was under the impression that they were right on your heels, thus the archers, but this is good.))

Mordus saw Castoden come running at the head of his men and glanced up at the rooftop where Shaellana was standing with the archers; she made several signs with her hands gesturing that the undead were further away. Mordus nodded curtly at her.

The last of the troops which had been stationed in the plaza before were moving steadily up the main northern street, called "Thaendil's Waye", towards the outskirts of the city. The lay of the land was such that one could see the northern edge of the city from the raised central and southern quarters. The shapes of the supply caravan were just visible outside the northern perimiter, a snaking band along the mottled plain which streatched far in every direction.

Mordus raised a hand to hail Castoden. Brae and Marr stood silent, eyeing the strangely empty surroundings with a soldiers accustomed wearyness.

"Timely as ever Castoden." He said in mock sarcasm. "I go to interrogate a prisoner in the dudgeons and when I come out what do I see? The Corpse Legions of Evil right at our doorstep! Humorous don't you think?" He chuckled to himself.

James narrowed his eyes and said, "This is no time for jokes. I'd suggest you get moving. The city is lost."

Mordain looked at the Loremaster, saying nothing. As he considered the question, a look of horror spread across his concealed face.

"Back at the gates!" he exclaimed.

The Mage of Shadows began moving towards the gates instantly.

-----

The wraith moved towards the girl was she was hit with the blunt of his scythe. He made a number of sweeping attacks, some of which were blocked and others were dodged. Azack'Mor shrieked in rage and knocked one of his foe's swords from her hand. He surged forward, scythe raised to deal the final blow.

-----

Shaellana watched from her vantage point as Mordain made his way back towards the wall. But why would he... She turned her eyes towards the wall and saw what her Lord pursued; the Archmage, as well as Arhaina and Elandir.

Quickly, she turned and made a series of gestures towards Brae and Marr before leaping from the rooftop to another, making her way towards her Lord.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Mordus frowned at Castoden. "You should not pass any opportunity for humor Castoden. Especialy when every breath could be your last. We have been waiting to make sure you haven't yet been impaled or dismembered in some manner, now that we'v established the saddening reality I think its time we joined you." He said talkatively and gestured, "After you."

Ariakas did not respond to Mordain, he only breathed heavily, gripped his sword tightly and followed the mage. They passed the undead who were still held by his spell and moved towards the gate, they were now between different portions of the enemy, who cut them apart from the rest of the Weissland-forces.

James shook his head in annoyance and continued on past the man, moving with his army further and further through the city and closer to the edge, where hopefully that sergeant and his men had already laid the oil.

Lathaon found two small vials. In his condition, he couldn't see which was which; one was a harsh red and one was a cloudy green, but he couldn't see the vials at all. He had only one hand free, but he judged their weight anyway and swallowed half the potion.

The creature seemed to fight harder as it saw Arhaina's blood. She had lost Elandir's sword now and was struggling to defend herself. The creature raised the scythe just as she stumbled on the body of one of Elandir's men. The disciple swung his weapon in a vertical arc, but just as it would have cut her down, she was pulled through the air to land a few meters away.

Lathaon had chosen correctly, and the wound had healed up. He tossed the potion to Elandir.

"Sorry about the rough landing, Arhaina," he said. He was stood up straight now, and it was clear that his senses had returned. He approached the disciple again. "Taste your doom, slave of darkness."

Flames leapt up from the ground as he walked, some giving off sparks with a loud popping noise.

Azack'Mor turned towards the Archmage just as he unleashed a terrible volley of fiery magic. The raw power tore into Azack'Mor. It filled his wounds before bursting straight through him. Shrieking and thrashing to no avail, Azack'Mor could not withstand the assault. With one, final wail, his form lost its structure and he fell to the ground as nothing but a burned cloak and blackened scythe.

-----

Shaellana dropped down beside Mordain and fell into pace instantly. The pair moved, with Ariakas only just behind, through alleys. Suddenly, they were confronted by a group of undead. The trio made short work of their enemy and moved down another alley which brought them close to the wall. Mordain could see Lathaon from where he now stood.

"Lord Lathaon, this way!" called Mordain as he blasted away one of the few undead that stood between him and his cousin.

-----

Drathmor stood just outside the gates. His minions moved around him, none coming within three feet of their Master. The Dark Lord raised his staff and free hand as he chanted a spell. Streaks of dark green light spread across the gatehouse, like cracks. Once he had finished chanting, Drathmor slammed the butt of his staff down. The gatehouse and nearby sections of wall crumbled to pieces in seconds.

Slowly, Drathmor Archon surveyed the city before him. Along the wall however he noticed a small group of elves; one of them looked to be... Lathaon Thaendil! The Dark Lord smiled malevolently and began making his way towards the elves...

Lathaon saw the Great Necromancer and looked back.

"Run, both of you!" he urged Elandir and Arhaina.

Drathmor was coming towards him. Lathaon called out to him now.

"I think you already have more than your fair share of Thaendil blood on your hands. Turn back now and leave Weissland in peace."

The Dark Lord laughed as he drew closer to the elf lord. "The blood of your family is your curse, mortal. It is because of the blood in your veins that I will not allow you to live beyond this day."

Drathmor came to a halt, perhaps fifteen feet away from Lathaon, the butt of his staff resting on the ground.

-----

The man in dark robes needed no introduction; that was Drathmor Archon. Mordain made haste towards his cousin and positioned himself on Lathaon's right side. He stood facing the Dark Lord. Shaellana moved to stand with Arhaina and Elandir.

"I stand with you, cousin." said Mordain.

Ariakas stood behind, only shaking his head. No, he thought. It can not come to this. So close, and now this. Slowly he moved beside Arhaina, Elandir and Shaellana but there he stopped, waiting.

"No, I have no curse. I am healthy and alive, and with much to be proud of," Lathaon said. "Is it jealousy that brings you back to Weissland?"

Lathaon let his own staff gently touch the ground, just as Drathmor did. His white robes would have been a great contrast to those of the Dark Lord, if only they were not marked with blood and dirt, and torn at places.

Drathmor released a cold laugh. "Jealousy? How little you know!"

The Dark Lord thrust his staff forward and spoke his sorcerous words. In responce, foul magic flew from the end of his staff towards Lathaon.

-----

Mordain moved his staff instantly, placing the raven carving between Lathaon and the Dark Lord's attack as Lathaon dodged out of the way. The dark power of Drathmor hit the end of Mordain's staff to no effect.

"Leave this realm, dark one." said Mordain as he raised defences around all those present.

"You make the first move and underestimate me?" Lathaon mocked. "You show your own foolishness, not mine."

Lathaon added his own magic to Mordain's defenses.

The face of the Dark Lord shifted to become a malevolent smile. Drathmor through his arms out and invoked another spell. The ground beneath his feet split and cracked in an area around him, and the shockwaves knocked back his foes.

Next, Drathmor threw his hands up. Dark energy began to rise from the cracks he had created in the ground, slowly spreading into the air like a fog.

-----

Shaellana was first back on her feet, though the rest were quick to follow. She leapt into the air and sent a ball of fire at the Dark Lord. Drathmor raised his hand and the fire was stopped and held in the air. He did not speak a word of magic; the fire simply followed his command. Then, he sent it back towards the Weisslanders.

Mordain went to block the spell, but as he did, Drathmor struck him with another bolt of magic, knocking him back.

"Come now, mortals. Surely you can do better?" taunted the Dark Lord.

Lathaon dissipated the fire with his own staff.

"Impatience, too! I can't understand why your name is feared so."

Lathaon closed his eyes, concentrated and chanted another spell. When he opened them and the spell was over, there were four images of him, all moving in exactly the same way as him.

The Dark Lord surged forward, his body shifting within a trail of darkness as he moved with super-natural speed. He tore his hand through the first of Lathaon's illusions, dispelling it, before sending the two men and the woman who stood further back hurtling through the air with another great shockwave.

Raising his hand, Drathmor invoked another spell. The second illusion created by Lathaon was drained of its colour and transformed to resemble the undead equivalent of the Archmage. The illusion moved towards Lathaon slowly, stupidly.

"Your tricks are wasted on me, little elf."

Lathaon did not bother to respond; he went straight into another spell. With that, the remaining archmage visions lost their colour and were transformed into creatures of pure white light and magic, like some sort of inverted shadows. They were no larger, though their visage seemed huge and twisted out of shape in strange swirling patterns. The undead illusion seemed to be shredded to pieces as it came into contact with the first, and then both leapt at Drathmor.

The Dark Lord held his staff forward as he invoked another spell. The forms of light were struck and held by tendrils of dark power that shot from the cracks in the ground beneath them. The dark magic pulled the illusions down into the darkness below where they were destroyed.

Drathmor held his freehand high and chanted a spell. As he did so, coils of ghostly light shot from his fingertips and travelled straight towards Lathaon.

Then, Mordain crashed into the Dark Lord's side and brought him to the ground.

"That was brave, mortal, but futile!" roared Drathmor as he blasted Mordain off him once more.

Rising, Drathmor spun quickly and cast a spell against Shaellana, who had been trying to creep behind him. The spell was powerful; it gripped her heart and sent waves of cold energy throughout her body. She felt weak. She fell to the ground, frail and silent.
