Lathaon found he could not breathe, let alone cast anything to defend himself. He felt helpless. He could not move his hand to reach for the dagger.

"There he is!" came a shout from somewhere nearby. Triggers were drawn back in one long moment and strings snapped forward. A crossbow bolt flew towards the disciple's head, but then kept going. It had missed by a small margin. Then there was a crunching sound as the second penetrated the thing's sleeve.

The three men were charging forward too, swords drawn. Elandir did not pause to congratulate Lathaon's wife on her shot, he dropped his own crossbow and drew that mithril blade of his.

Azack'Mor released the Archmage as soon as his arm was pierced, recoiling in pain. The wraith turned towards his new foes and tore the arrow from his arm. There was no blood seeping from the wound simply because Azack'Mor had no blood to bleed.

Again, the wraith vanished before reappearing right in front of the elf armed with the mithril sword. Azack'Mor's attack was so swift that the elf had no time to defend; he was thrown aside as the wraith tore his blade across the elf's chest. Whether the wound was deep or not, or if it had even pierced the man's armour, was unknown to Azack'Mor, but the elf was sent through the air before landing far to the side.

With a deathly cry, Azack'Mor moved towards the rest of his new foes.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

The group made their way towards the city center where eventualy all roads in Ataya led. They weren't alone, soldiers were milling about every street; some porting supplies and others manning streatchers for the wounded.

They followed the injured Mage's bearers and eventualy left the multitude of streets behind, comming instead to the central plaza, where almost every square foot was occupied, save the designated walkways. There were carts waiting for the injured, and some were already leaving for the north, out if the city.

Mordus halted one of the ones about to leave and had the soldiers carefully lift Boralay's streatcher onto it.

"You two travel with the cart, there is nothing you can do here." He instructed them once they were done.

Brae heard cries of both and pain and cruelty from the south. He looked at Marr before speaking. "There is not much time until those creatures reach us!"

Lathaon gasped for air and barely resisted collapse. There was a black mark on his neck where the disciple had touched him, and the wound on his leg was painless in comparison.

Elandir was caught by surprise just as Lathaon had been. He was thrown back by the shaft of the scythe and cut badly, losing blood. He was lying near to a wall, and had dropped the sword.

In a fraction of a second, the creature had already torn one of Elandir's men apart with his weapon. One of the others faltered in the face of the wraith, and then he too was swiftly cut down. The last, the strongest, the one who had carried the oil, reached the disciple and swung his sword at the thing.

Arhaina dropped the crossbow and equipped her sword, though she had already delayed in deciding whether to run to Lathaon or Elandir, or to try and fight. Elandir looked worse-off, bloodied and lain on the floor, but Lathaon had her love, and she knew he was their best chance to defeat the wraith. Lesser undead had come from the other side, and she was forced to fight them off.

The Weisslanders continued their orderly retreat, and James turned and grabbed a nearby sergeant. "You, take twenty men and gather up as much oil as possible," ordered James. "Take it and ring it all along the nothern edge of the city."

"With twenty men?" asked the sergeant.

"Take fifty, I don't care!" shouted James.

"Yes, Milord!" replied the sergeant, realizing the urgency of what James was telling him.

"Report back to me when you are done!"

"Here they come again!" shouted Peloron.

James turned to see the Undead assaulting once again. "Steel yourselves, men of Weissland!"

Mordain watched as the Weissland defenders and James began fighting off another wave of undead. But this was a large wave, easily outnumbering the defenders. The Mage of Shadows made his way forward, staff held towards his enemy as he began chanting another spell. As he neared the undead, the eyes of the raven atop his staff flared with dark power. In responce, a thick, black liquid spread at the feet of the undead. It held them fast, preventing them from moving. The spell would not last forever, but it did buy them some time.

"Lord Castoden!" called Mordain. "Move, quickly! Back, back!"

-----

Azack'Mor slew his second victim, but he was caught off-guard by a third foe. The man's sword tore through the wraith's side. Azack'Mor thrashed in responce, striking the man back as he howled in rage and maddness. His powers erupted from him, striking everything that lay nearby with a cold, strength-draining power.

Mordus looked at Brae, a cross between appathy and cold humor on his face. His hood was off and his eyes lined from lack of sleep; complementing a rather grave and morbid appearance unfavourably.

"Then let them come." He said.

The last of the carts and carriages were departing the plaza, leaving only the fighting fit. Those who remained could not count on a way out if wounded, save perhaps on the backs of their comrades.
Mordus stood quietly whilst the sound of battle; screams, howls and unearthly cries continued. The units in the plaza could only wait at their barricades as the undead drew closer.

He glanced up the empty streets from whence Castoden and Mordain had yet to return. The plaza grew quiet as the injured lessened in numbers. Still nothing.

Ariakas quickly reached the area where the main fighting was. He saw James Castoden leading the Weisslanders against a massive amount of undead, but despite the courage of the men the enemies were simply too many and they could not hold out for long.

Mordain Thaendil used his magic against the the undead and urged Castoden to begin falling back. Ariakas branded his blade, cut down an undead creature which opposed him and began moving towads the dark-clothed mage.

Arhaina had since edged towards Elandir as she fought off the skeletons and zombies which came at her. She heard the howl and felt a chill, though she was lucky enough to avoid worse effects.

Lathaon seemed to have recovered enough to be at least making a start at healing his throat. His eyes seemed to look about but not see. His senses were barely functioning.

Arhaina spotted the mithril blade still lying on the floor and snatched it up in her other hand. It was light, and far superior to her other weapon. With both swords, she fought the undead as best she could, preventing any from reaching Lathaon or Elandir and finishing them.

The man was struck in the jaw by the wraith's elbow with a great deal of force. He had been knocked to the ground, but wasn't getting up. If he had survived, then the wraith's power drained away what remained of his life.

With the rest of his foes dead or weakened, Azack'Mor turned his attention to the girl once he regained control of himself. The mighty wraith moved towards her and raised his scythe. He swung it, aiming for the kill...

The undead were stalled in their tracks, and James heard Mordain calling. Nodding, James shouted, "Men at the back! Turn and run! Orderly now, reform at the edge of the city!" Turning back, he said, "Men at the front, fall back with me! Slowly now! Keep formation! Orderly now!"

Arhaina felt the shadow come over her as the wraith floated towards her. She kicked one of the undead back as best she could and blocked the scythe with both swords. The thing was strong, and even when she forced the hilts closer together, she almost fell backwards into the undead. Fortunately, she kept her balance and pivoted around the wraith, keeping the scythe blade, and the lesser undead, away from her.

Lathaon seemed to be trying desperately to heal himself sufficiently. He still did not seem to see, but he had heard her voice as she fought. He was clutching his throat and yelling out the words. Elandir, too, was trying to heal himself, and had successfully stopped the bleeding, but he looked in no fighting condition.

Lathaon was slowly making his way forward slightly as he continued to tend to the blackened mark.

The girl was quick; Azack'Mor found it hard to keep track of her. She made a swift attack with her weapons, cutting into the wraith's back. Screeching once more, Azack'Mor turned violently and knocked his foe back with a powerful strike from the shaft of his scythe.

-----

Mordain watched the soldiers make good their retreat. He moved slowly towards James, hoping to help the man and his soldiers when the undead broke free of his spell. But he did not know how much more help he could be without resting to regain his power; the spells he had used so far had tired him. Strength of will however allowed him to fight on.

-----

Seeing that the walls had fallen, the Dark Lord walked to the edge of his podium.

"To the city!" he commanded.

The undead beneath that carried the podium began to carry the Dark Lord slowly towards Ataya. Drathmor would end this pathetic resistance himself if need be.

Vardakh moved forward, beyond Drathmor. It would be soon before Ataya fall.

The men retreated quickly but orderly, and they put whole city blocks between themselves and Drathmor's forces with every passing minute. They passed out of bow range of the enemy and James ordered his men, "Turn and go now! Keep orderly but run to the edge of the city!" They did so, the men of Weissland running with their captains and their Lord Castoden, making for the edge of the city.

The noise was terrible. She blocked again with her own sword. That had so far seemed a good idea. Elandir's weapon was easier and quicker to swing, so she used it to attack her enemy. She had to use the strength of her right hand to block, so she had not swapped hands.

The wraith's scythe swept down again but she leapt back. But then, as she was moving forward to counterattack, it raised the scythe and attacked her with the blunt end. Even as she jumped aside, it caught her in the cheek and narrowly missed her eye, making her cry out in surprise.

Lathaon stumbled forward some more. He could hear the fighting. He was holding his staff out now, using it to feel for his enemy. His other hand remained on his throat and he healed it. The black mark had shrunk, and he had soaked it with water to soothe it. He was close now. He took his hand off his throat, satisfied that it wouldn't close up as he felt through his pockets for something.

The Dark Lord of Omens sat upon his daemonic mount smiling beneath his horned helmet. He looked around and saw that the feeble constructions defending the city would soon be destroyed and the gates would soon fall. Upon the moment they did, Vardakh would order his troops to flood into the city.

((Im assuming you haven't crossed the halfway-line of the city yet and that im with some troops at the center FYI.))

Mordus glimpsed orderly lines of men comming down the main street leading from the southern gateway and through smaller streets leading from the south of Ataya. It had to be Castoden he thought. Shaellana had already ordered archers onto the roofs of the tallest nearby buildings to provide cover fire if need be, and he finished off preparations by ordering the soldiers stationed in the plaza to make for the northern edge of the city, tailing the supply caravan which should have just made it out. Shaellana joined the archers on the rooftops once her orchestrating was done.

Mordus stood alone in the empty plaza with Brae and Marr and watched as Castoden's men drew closer, and could hear the garbled wails and unnerving shrieks of the undead close behind.

((The Undead are way far behind, they're still stuck and can't move. ;) ))

James's men continued their running retreat, and James kept looking over his shoulder to make sure the Undead still could not advance. As he ran, he saw a man standing alone in the middle of the city's central plaza. He was familiar, one of Mordain's agents during the White War, but he could not remember his name.
