Mage Lord Tabitha Sergares strode forward confidently to find a position on the walls where she would be of use. She was fifty years old, yet still looked young and as cold as ever. Perhaps that was why she was nicknamed "ice queen" behind her back, yet she did not care about what others thought about her. As she walked her staff hit the stone ground with impeccable timing and added to the ice cold attitude of the woman. Even her robes were white and pale blue like ice. She saw mage lord Boralays ahead and called out "Mage Lord Boralays! Are you going to the wall?"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nerris took another look around him. The books, scrolls and parchments which filled the room. How could it all be left to simply be destroyed? he thought. He worried for a moment longer, then shook his head and headed out of the door, clutching his staff to him tightly in both hands. He said to himself "It won't do, it just won't do. Who ever heard of a historian being a part of history? I'll never be able to re-write all of those books if we lose the city, not enough time in the day. Oh, hang it all."

He headed out of the tower as quickly as he could, muttering the whole way. He was not a battle mage, but that hardly mattered now.

Boralays turned his head towards the woman calling out to him and recognized Tabitha. The ice queen he thought with a smile, now they all in the same boat.

"Partially," he said as he waved the rest of the mages onwards down the street. "I will seek out miltary command and find out of how the enemy moves, and how they attacks the city. At the moment, since neither Lathaon Thaendil, Drairan, Ithrain or Alicant is here, I feel there is little communication between the military and the mages of Ataya. And we need to fight effectively together, so I will relay as much information as I can to the other mages before I will begin attending to the wounded."

"That is my plan for the day at least," he added with a sour smile. No damage in trying to brighten up this grim prospect with some humor, he thought.

Sergares smiled slightly, although there was no warmth in it even if the smile was genuine. She replied "It is good to see some of us are thinking clearly and not losing our heads. I will join you at the command area for now then, I've worked with the military many times, although I never thought I'd see a day such as this."

Mordain fixed his gaze on the cages presented by the enemy. A series of dark howls rose from the ranks of the enemy as the cages were opened; several hundred creatures, formed from flesh and contorted bone, rushed forth, charging straight for the walls. They lashed onto the stone and scaled the defences easily, many moving onto the battlements to kill whatever they could.

The spearmen proved effective at driving them from the walls before they reached the battlements, and those that did get through had to deal with the Seekers.

Under the cover of the fleshlings' attack, the armies of the Dark Lord began their advance. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers moved towards the city of Ataya with the desire to see it broken and gone. Many at the front of the force carried ladders, grapples and other impliment intended to be used to overcome the defences.

The force sent against the gate moved quickly. Behind them moved a collosal battering ram, protected within a thick hide of dark metal. The entire contraption looked like a dark beast.

"Have all archers and war machines open fire!" ordered Mordain. "And tell the gate defenders that the ram must be brought down!"

Arrows filled the sky before falling upon the vast hordes. Thousands of evil creatures were felled with the first volly, but there were hundreds of thousands still to face. From the catapults, great rocks were launched. Upon impact, they flattened the enemy and carved paths through their ranks.

At the gates, archers did what they could to try and kill the crewmen of the ram. But it was no use; the construct had impervious attacks, to arrows at least. The Seeker officer charged with the defence of the gates thought for a moment, before turning to nearby soldiers. "Reinforce the gate as much as possible. I want every available soldier to help! We have to do whatever we can to slow down that thing!"

Mordain watched as the second volley was launched. Only the fleshlings plaqued the walls, and they were failing to cause any great damage. The main force had yet to reach the walls. A third volley was launched.

"Prepare the oil!" shouted the Mage of Shadows.

Sergares and Boralays both reached the command tower as Mordain ordered the oil brought forward. The room which was open on all four sides so that the leaders had an easy view of the battle was filled with different commanders, advisors as well as messengers who would relay orders, information and messages.

"He's probably our most important asset now," Boralays said quietly so that only Sergares could hear him, referring to Mordain, "But it's unfortunate that most of the experienced military leaders went with James Castoden to hold of the army in the Pass of Kuren."

((Not sure.))

Oil was brought forward to the walls and carried along a walkway that had been constructed perhaps six feet below the battlements. There, the searing oils were poured into a pipe system that poured the fiery liquid onto the enemies on the ground below. Instantly, Archers took their arrows and lit the tips in braziers that had been placed along the wall for just such a purpose. The arrows were loosed upon the enemies now covered in oil, and they were consumed by a sudden spread of wild fire.

Mordain looked to the catapults; the crewmen were now firing flaming boulders at the enemy, hoping to aid the spread of the flames. He turned back to his men. "Prepare another load of oil. We can't let them claim the wall!"

Sergares whispered back to Boralays "Yes, what I wouldn't give to have some more veteran soldiers here. Like Captain Havard or General Rios. I'd give up my wealth to have old General Caine Drakkon still alive and with us. I remember his grandson, Nathaniel, a sturdy mage, although I wonder whatever happened to him. You trained him didn't you?"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--Entering Ataya--

Kor'Mor'Oka stood far back in the hordes of Drathmor's army. He was no fool, and would wait for the minor creatures to make a foothold on the walls. Then he would have some fun. Oh yes, I'll have a very good day, he thought darkly as he watched the arrows felling hundreds and the surging masses trampling over the fallen.

((Ooho... scary subject since I'm playing with your character and you know more than I do  ))

"Nathaniel?" Boralays nodded, "He was one of my students yes, although I never really knew anyone else of his family."

He moved forward through the room all the way to the south-eastern window beside Mordain himself, who stood there with some of his own men. Boralays looked into the distance. "Fleshlings," he murmured. "How many strange wonders evil can create through time."

"I have no time for small-talk, Boralays. It is taking everything we have to keep those undead from climbing the walls and reaching the battlements." said Mordain coldly.

He watched as more oil was carried into the walls and poured onto the enemy. Again, the archers loosed flaming arrows and the catapults hurled fiery boulders. A number of fleshlings dropped to the ground below and began attacking the Weissland soldiers there, but the crude undead were quickly slain.

Boralyas did not hear Mordain. He was far too occupied with his own thoughts. He could see Borsun on the wall now. Strange, he thought Andros had gone with him.

He looked around the room, looking around at all the faces of the people in the room and was surprised. He looked down at the wall again but did not find who he sought.

((Is Shaellana in the room?))

Sergares looked out on the scene before her. Her face was emotionless, although she was greatly troubled by the ferocity of the attack. She continued her conversation with Boralays "I never met any of his family either, but I learnt a great deal about military history. Caine Drakkon was a great general, he lead Weissland forces to many victories against foes which were superior in numbers. That was his talent and why I thought of him when I looked at that." She pointed beyond the wall for a moment and then said "And I doubt many mages would truly know the other members of that family, most were military through and through."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nerris stood on the wall, his staff at the ready. He spoke words to raise his defences and prepared to fight. Fight, it sounded absurd to his mind. He was not a soldier, not even a battle mage. Nerris had not set foot outside of Ataya since before his training, and rarely battled after his training had been complete. But there was not much choice in the matter.

The first few ladders were placed against the walls. Fleshlings fought off the Weissland soldiers as they attempted to push the ladders back. Undead began to assail the wall and reach the battlements.

"Move the archers out of there! Kill the invaders!" commanded Mordain.

Brae appeared on the wall rather suddenly, a sword held in each hand. He leapt through the air and quickly slew the fleshlings near one of the ladders. With a simple push, he sent the first ladder crashing down atop the enemies below.

Arrows still rained over the enemy, as did the boulders.

At the gates, the ram was growing closer and closer. The defenders still had few ideas as to how to stop it.

Nerris summoned what magical strength he could and spoke haltingly. The fleshling at the top of the ladder to the mage's right grappled with a soldier who was desperately trying to push the thing away. Nerris finished speaking, even though he was terrified. There was a sound of wooshing air and the ladder was flung away from the wall to crash down to the ground far below. The soldier was thankfully save from being dragged down as well when a nearby Seeker had hacked the arm from the fleshling.

Nerris turned to speak to the Seeker, but he was already gone, off fighting somewhere else.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kor'Mor'Oka flexed his black wings idly, stretching to ready himself. He smiled sickly as he watched the siege.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tabitha looked along the wall quickly, then shook her head "No, I cannot."

Foul creatures assaulted the defenders of the battlements, but the Weisslanders fended them back. Ladder after ladder was pushed back into the hordes below and grapples were cut. All things considered, the defence was going well so far.

Mordain ordered more oil to be poured onto the enemies. If the defence was to be maintained, he had to keep the fires at the bottom of the wall burning for as long as possible.

-----

Drathmor saw yet another load of oil being dropped upon his soldiers. He was enraged at the resistance of his enemies. Their deffiance would not go unpunished. Raising his staff, he began to weave his dark magic. The sky darkened and thrashed with green lightning as an unnatural wind blew.

The Dark Lord prepared his spells.

-----

Shaellana shook her head. "That man does as he sees fit."

Boralays quickly turned around and began to descend the stairs. When his face met that of Sergares he simply shrugged and carried on, "We need that man."

Sergares looked at the strange lightning and scowled. She said "It seems we are about to be tested."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Talath Krae slashed out with both his weapons, carving a fleshling and the rope of a grappling hook at the same time. The creature let out a howl as it fell from the wall. He looked around for more enemies, and noticed Nola further along the wall. He stood back from the battlement and ran towards her.
