Andros shook his head, "I'm sorry for interrupting Mordain, but I'm surprised that you do not immediately find out how the battle from which Mordus returned ended? It seems like he is the only one that has returned from it at the moment"

Mordus lip twitched in a vague smile, followed by a nod of aknowledgement at Andros. "I bring only tales of my own exploits. The fate of those under the command of Castoden remain unknown to me, although in my retreat it did seem as if the undead had been halted." He paused before adding; "I was too greviously wounded to pay much attention to all but my own flight."

Mordain turned scornfully towards Andros. "I have yet to dismiss Lord Mordus, mage lord. Do not think that I have forgotten my duties." He turned back to Mordus. "Save your report for later, Mordus. Andros is correct in that you are the first to return, and that there is much to be learned."
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Andros simple bowed in a gesture of apology to Mordain.

"How much do you think those 'laws' mean to me?" Elandir asked, angrily. "I would kill him myself if I did not think it better to tell you now what a mistake you are making and learn from the consequences."

His last words were quiet and calm, but with a viciousness in them. He wheeled round and walked away.

Andros quickly decided to speak again before Elandir left, "What the coming army from the Realm Elandir? Maybe they can be of help?"

"No. They should fight on the battlefield they will be used to," Elandir said, without looking back.

"They might not be as used to fighting against forces from the Defiled Kingdom as you think," Andros responded, before he shrugged, turning back to Mordus and Mordain as he spoke to himself, "Just a suggestion of course." Then he put on his fatherly smile again, before scratching his curly beard once more.

Mordain shook his head as Elandir left before turning to Mordus. "Come, Mordus, I must have your report and then there is much to be done. Andros, perhaps you should await with the other mages in the council chamber? I have tasks for you and the other mages."

Andros stood still for a short while before slowly nodding. "I'll do that," he said. "I'll take it I can also tell the rest of what happened with Ithrain."

Then he looked at Mordus, "And I hope we will hear about how the battle ended in not too long."

Elandir went quickly to the central tower. He was slightly surprised by Mordain's refusal to execute Ithrain, but forced the matter aside. He recalled Ithrain's first actions - calling up the battle mages - and regretted leaving behind the robes. Few mages worked for him. It was somehow against their nature, against their motives. The only mages under his command had signed their contract before learning those arts, leaving him almost alone within the tower.

As he walked, he thought how much luck had favoured him then. First, finding the guards - there had always been a few who had been present, and seen and heard him talking with the archmage, providing his skills in return for Lathaon's favour and an old debt which he knew would never be repaid, and was glad that was so. The archmage always rewarded him, but Elandir never settled and spent that gold, he expanded his organisation with it, to further his goals. It was an ongoing cycle, but he liked it.

He found a battle mage on his way to the central tower and stopped him.

"You there," he said. "Fight me."

"What?" the mage asked in confusion.

"You're a battle mage, yes? You have fought magic duels countless times, I'm sure."

"But-" the mage started, but Elandir shook his head. "You aren't a mage, are you?"

Elandir raised the staff. "I am many things. But let me tell you something. Tonight, I lost against my foe because I hesitated. I escaped alive only by luck. Practice is what I need now. Fight me."

"You really aren't a mage then. But I will accept your challenge."

Mordain nodded to Andros. "Yes, tell the others what has befallen Ithrain. However, tell them also that no mage is to leave the chamber until I have arrived and given my orders. I should be along shortly." He looked to Mordus. "Lord Mordus, come this way."

Mordain walked away from Andros, back towards his office chambers. Mordus fell into pace beside him.

Once they were away from Andros, Mordain spoke. "Tell me, Mordus, do you have any idea of the size of the force that approaches Ataya? I have no firm numbers yet."

Andros went, as ordered, to the council chamber. There he found every mage lord still present in the city, as well as a few high ranking mages. The only mage lords who were not there was Lathaon and Mordain Thaendil, Hans Drairan, Ithrain and Mistrandar Alicant. Those four, not counting Mistrandar, was the only mages at the council, and Mistrandar was the highest ranking one of all the mage lords not at the council. Andros thought that the power of the mage lords was diminishing.

He addressed the rest of the mage lords, telling them of the situation, about Ithrain, Mordus' return and the fact they had to wait for Mordain's orders before doing anything. Most accepted this, though there were tiny bit of murmurs among the mage lords.

After finishing the briefing Andros walked over to a group of mage lords consisting of the elf Tmar Radith, the grey-haired, short Boralays and the tall black-haired Borsun Uck'bar who looked more like a feral warrior than a mage lord. Boralays and Tmar greeted Andros with a nod, though Borsun was too deep in the conversation to do the same.

"I'll say it again," the man said with his deep, but powerful voice, "Sending both Lord Thaendil and Castoden to the frontline deep in combat with the enemy is a mistake."

Boralays looked unsure about this, though Tmar was more certain. "You may be right, but what are we to decide in that matter."

"I'll say the Council should have a saying," Borsun responded. "They can't throw their lives away like this, and pushing us to the sideline."

"We're not on the sideline," Andros said to him slowly. "We are the main defense."

"What do you mean?" Boralays asked.

"Drathmor is not in the Pass of Kuren," Andros said. "He's taken another route. He's coming here now."

These words spread through the crowd quickly and many more questions arose among them. Andros saw that both Borsun and Tmar withdrew from the crowd. He followed their lead, taking a seat in a corner and closed his mind, entering a state of magical meditation. He needed to think. He needed to plan. He needed to act. They all did.

After being thoroughly beaten several times, Elandir stopped and let the mage go. He was pleased with Mordain's response to the situation at Endral, and so his purpose in coming to the tower had been fulfilled. The dwarves might not be quick to answer the call of war anyway, but Elandir was confident that Mordain's words would carry some weight.

Mordus looked over his shoulder habitualy before he spoke. Not wishing to cause undue alarm.

"I can not say. The horizon streatches far with them though. The defence here will most certainly be paltry in comparison." He tried shifting his left arm but was stiffled by a searing pain from his wound. Whatever blade Xalis'Khan possessed it was an ungodly one. The wound had yet to close up.

He let it hang gingerly at his side and looked around him as they walked towards the chambers through a barren corridor.

"I do not hold much hope for the city, truth be told." He said as he eyed the outer wall through a small slit window. "The best one could hope for is that the extensive fortifications of the city make their numbers count for little."

"The city will not survive, no. This I know already. Our goal is to buy time for the refugees to make their way further north."

The pair entered a chamber where Mordain turned to Mordus once the door was closed.

"Now, Mordus, tell me of the battle of the Kuren Pass."

"Castoden held well." Mordus continued. "I'm suprised the undead did not breech the lines with their sheer weight in bodies. The soldiers did their part, and whilst I fought a Disciple I could discern only passingly the struggle of the Archmage and whom I believe is known as Ruin." He made and unmade a fist, cracking the ligaments in his hand as he tried to recall what else he had seen.

He found himself divergent from that train of thought and the oddity of Mordain's appearance occured to him in a curious humor. For how many years had he been speaking to a set of robes? No matter. He snapped out of it, but couldn't hide a slight twitch of the lip.

"I do believe Castoden was engaged as well. Some undead of note."

"Ruin?" asked Mordain, his interests rising. "Did you speak with him?"

Mordain turned away from Mordus, casting his gaze through the large window in the chamber. "That will be all, Mordus. You may begin interrogating Ithrain. I want to know everything he does."

His left hand shook slowly. Mordain placed his right hand upon his arm to try and control it, but it would not subside. He raised his left arm, keeping it close to his chest, hoping that it would go unnoticed by Mordus. A strange, dark liquid trickled slowly down his sleeve and dripped onto the floor before him. Mordain stared at it; how he despised the creature that he had become.
