"A slave? One such as you would be made so much more than that, so much more than you are now. I can taste your hunger, your lust for power! You know it is there, as well as I do. Give yourself to the shadow and you will become more than you could ever imagine."
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Ithrain shivered. He wanted to discard the offer, but could not help consider it. He paused, thinking Drathmor's words over. He eventually spoke.

"You make it sound as if the price is so small."

"If you wish to gain power, sacrafices must be made. Betray the land of Weissland and your weak, mortal bonds, and embrace the dark."

Drathmor held forth his hand, waiting for Ithrain to take it.

"It is the only way for you to survive this."

The mage lord did not know what possessed him to do so, but he took the hand.

The face of the Dark Lord shaped to become a mask of maligant delight. His hand gripped Ithrain's tightly and unearthly bolts surged from Drathmor before coiling around the mage lord. The lightning seared him, caused him to howl in agony, and empowered him. The mortal could feel the darkness within him.

Around them, the dark void was moving quickly. It was being drawn to a central point; to Ithrain. The darkness, suddenly, imploded upon the man. Shadows rushed into him and filled him.

When the process was complete, the image of Drathmor was gone, the terrible storm was receeding and the wraith-like tendrils faded. Ithrain was left on his knees, panting for breath and cringing in pain.

There was but a lingering presence, faint yet undeniably evil.

"Now, you will know power."

And then the presence was gone, carried away with the storms.

(( ))

Ithrain felt pain, but it was nothing compared to the feeling of raw power within him.

A Weissland Royal Guard came running down the walkway. Ithrain heard the heavy footsteps before he saw the man.

"Councillor Ithrain, are you okay?" he said. The mage lord was still on his knees, and his skin had turned ghostly white.

He stood up and looked at the guard. "I am. The battle has drained me, that's all. Has the vault been fully emptied?"

"Aye, it has. What of it?"

"Go and assemble the battle mages in the central tower."

"As you wish, milord."

((In the Tower. Do you reckon he should be assembled with the rest of the battle mages?))

((No, but I think he should be informed. I was actually asking to see if I have an excuse to get Elandir over here. He could run into Ithrain if you want, but he will probably notice the taint if so.))

Ithrain headed towards the Tower of Omniscience. It would take time to summon all the battle mages.

((Doesn't make a difference to me; it's up to you what you want to happen with Ithrain. Mordain will most likely be able to sense the taint too.))

Mordain sat in the council chamber. There, he had assembled a number of military officials from across the city. A map of Weissland was on the table before them, as well as a map of the city.

"We have thirty thousand soldiers within Ataya, my Lord, along with fifty thousand militia." said one officer.

"As well as the Seekers and the Legion." added another.

Mordain thought over the numbers. "A large number of our men should be stationed along the southern wall, to rain down as many arrows as possible upon our enemies. We will need to gather all seige equipment available too."

Just then, the door was opened and a Seeker entered. He bowed before speaking. "Forgive the intrusion Lord Mordain, but I felt you should know that Ithrain has called for an assembly of all the battle mages."

Mordain's head rose and he fixed the Seeker with his gaze. "Why?"

The Seeker shook his head. "I know not, my Lord."

"Then perhaps you should go and find out?"

The Seeker bowed before hurrying from the room.

((I was talking about Mordain there...))

Ithrain was disturbed before he could reach his destination. It was a seeker.

"Lord Mordain wants to know why you ordered an assembly of the battle mages."

"I am only carrying out my orders," Ithrain said. "I need all available support to fight Drathmor."

"Oh? Where are you going then?"

Ithrain glared, and realised he could do so in a far more intimidating way. Perhaps it was because he wanted to kill the seeker, perhaps it was something within him. "Battles are not won when servants waste lords' time!" he spat. "I am going to retrieve my staff."

In reality, he had left it in the room he had fought the Great Necromancer from. It was probably somewhere down at the bottom of the tower, under a heap of rubble. The seeker seemed to accept his answer, though, and left him.

((Ah right, okie-dokie. Will Elandir be making an appearance?))

The Seeker returned to Mordain. "My Lord, Lord Ithrain claims that he needs all available mages to battle the Great Necromancer."

Mordain only nodded.

((Tomorrow. I need to sleep now. ;zzz; ))

The guards outside the entrance to the other tower allowed him in without question. He had access to most of the Mystic Tower, in his position. He kept looking back, however, a lurking instinct telling him he was being followed or watched. He ascended the stairs. When he was near the top, when there was no mistaking his destination, a group of guards walked through one of the doorways. There was a mage among them, though nobody Ithrain had met before.

"Milord... not meaning to cause offence, but what are you doing here?" the mage asked. He was hooded, and did not look Ithrain in the eye. He was clothed in simple grey robes, neat and of good material, but not adorned with gold or silver lining, or jewels. He held a gnarled staff.

"I could ask the same of you, mage."

Of course, the man was not a mage lord. Ithrain would have recognised one.

"As part of the archmage's bodyguard in the tower, it is my duty to patrol these restricted areas in his absense," the man argued. "The Weissland Royal Guard, of course, do not answer to even councillors when such a thing would contradict these duties."

Ithrain's anger grew, but he managed to keep himself and his wits under control. "The First Duty of the Weissland Royal Guard is to protect the archmage, and this outrules all other duties," he said. "I am sure you understand that if Weissland cannot hold against the new threat, he will be in danger."

"I know my duties and their reasons," the mage said, unflinchingly. "The reason we guard the restricted areas is because those who attempt to access them without the consent of the archmage are a threat to the archmage, their own loyalty, and the people of Weissland."

Ithrain's hands turned to fists. "You dare to question my loyalty?!"

"Since you think you know everything about the Weissland Royal Guard, I will remind you that there is nothing we will not dare to do to protect the archmage."

Ithrain brought his new power to bear on the mage, but was too late - the two guards beside him lunged at the traitor with their weapons with such speed and precision that he was forced to deal with them first. He threw them back against the walls with dark power. The mage was only slightly slower. Throwing off the robe revealed a slimmer figure, clad in leather armour, staff in one hand and a mithril blade in the other.

((I'm afraid I need to go now, but I may be back in a short while.))

((I know this is a double-post, but I thought this might be worth bumping.))

Elandir advanced far more quickly than the spellwords came from Ithrain's mouth. He came from a low, almost crouching position, bringing up the staff in a powerful strike to the neck. Ithrain had thought it aimed for his jaw, and lifted his head up higher, exposing the real target when in fact, it should have been blindingly obvious. The head of the staff was the perfect shape.

The two guards recovered and stood up just as Ithrain was lifted from his feet. Their armour and physical resilience had saved them from the magic and the impact.

"You'd better hope your instinctive magic is good, milord, because I am going to cut out your tongue."

Ithrain choked, held up by his throat by Elandir and his staff. The guards moved closer.

((Note: can anyone confirm the blue phrase? I'm sorry, I'm not quite sure if it's the right name for it, because it's from so long ago and even after having a look through forums on TMTOA which are normally hidden even to me, I haven't been able to find any mention...))

((Instinctive magic; magic that works on its own, responding to subconscious needs of the user, or working to protect them etc. The basic principle is that it works without words, sometimes cannot be controlled and is less powerful. At least, that's what I can recall.))

Mordain stood up suddenly. He could sense the dark power within the tower. This was not Drathmor's magic, but it was similar. Wasting no time, he walked from the room and headed towards the source of the foul taint.

((Yeah, that's alright. It's just the term that's vague. I find the wording to be presice enough, but not satisfying... anyway..))

Mage lord Andros Kalmann had sensed the same taint as Mordain had and came out from his own room as Mordain passed it down the hallway.

"Lord Mordain," he talked as he caught up with the higher ranking mage, "I believe you can sense it, the taint, but how much do you know? Do you know what it might be?"
