Ithrain stood in the centre of a circle of other mages, at the top of one of the towers. The huge glass outer wall allowed a good view of the horizon. They could see only a blurred line of grey where the blue sky ended and the ground was too far away to be seen. But each one's eyes were closed tight in concentration. Ithrain, surprisingly, was second to sense the disturbance. That was the way of his magic, of course. The council mage could arguably summon as much aggressive power as the archmage himself, but unfortunately, this was his only noticeable strength. He lacked the defenses, mental agility and endurance of other council mages. "Lord Ithrain, do you feel th-" "Yes. Keep your hold on the spell and brace yourself. Stay calm, stay strong, stay focused." |

All of the mages heard the voice and most were chilled to the bone by the sound. Ithrain seemed oblivious. "Close him out," he said. "Fight him." The mages had begun a constant chant, all in unison. Some were sweating heavily already as they struggled to resist the Great Necromancer. One would likely falter soon. |

It was as Ithrain had feared. One of the mages gasped and let the spell slip away from his grasp. He had doubled over, head throbbing, pushed over the edge by the vision. The council mage resisted his anger and said firmly "All of you, stop." Ithrain was still deep in concentration, maintaining what was left of the spell until Drathmor would make his final attack on the spell. |

The council mage abruptly withdrew as soon as he felt the other's efforts committed to the spell. He let the storm dissipate. "You did not last as long as I hoped," he said to the mages around him. "Now we try something different. Something with a far less perceptible source." Ithrain would have smiled if the situation was not so dire. "Follow my lead and heat up the air in front of the tower. If we make a strong enough magical wind here, natural wind will follow its path. Time is valuable to us. If we can slow down the undead march, that might well be just as useful as blasting them with lightning." When some of them seemed unimpressed, he added "If we can create a tornado, we will have the benefit of both effects." The mages obediently followed his orders. |

It took time, but the mages managed to channel a strong wind current down towards the enemy. Of course, it was mainly the sound that indicated its power, as there were few leaves or other loose objects in that direction. |

"This isn't going as well as I hoped," Ithrain said. "We need a way to concentrate these winds further, and a way to preoccupy the Great Necromancer." He thought for a moment, then selected aabout half of the mages. "Each of you create an air elemental. In these winds, they will rush towards the enemy as fast as arrows." |

It was the mages he had selected earlier that were struck by the attack; the others quickly brought up defenses as they saw the victims. Some were dazed but recovered, some buried their heads in their arms. One started screaming in agony. There was a flash of blue light and the screaming stopped. Crackling bolts of energy ravaged the mage. The body collapsed. "His alternative fate would have been far worse," Ithrain said. The mages were both shocked and frightened at the same time. "Bring up your defenses and press the attack. Now!" They did so immediately, hurrying back to their tasks. The remaining selection felt the impact as their servants reached the enemy army, tearing through them, invisible to most. |

Mordain stood upon the battlements of the southern wall, gazing towards the Great Wall and the vast horde pouring from it towards Ataya. The Wall was so distant, but less than a day's travel was all that stood between Drathmor's army and the city of Ataya. Mordain Thaendil was taking care of the city's defences. He knew the General Rios and the Az'Gor would not arrive in time, so he had to make use of the forces he had; 28,000 soldiers still remained in the city, along with Mordain's 5,000 Seekers and the 1,000-strong Legion. It was a trivial force compared to the armies of the Defiled Kingdom, but if they played their cards right, then Mordain hoped to hold the city for a few days at the least. Defending the city was no longer the objective; the objective was buying time for those who had been evacuated. Ithrain's magic continued to ravage the armies of Drathmor, although Mordain could sense the powerful magic the Dark Lord was using to drive the attack back. Drathmor was powerful, too powerful. Mordain had to wonder; was James Castoden up to the task expected of him? |

"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil. "It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil. One of the Last Guardians. Suck it. | |

Ithrain clenched his fists in frustration as the spells faded away. The winds continued, but with little strength now that there was nothing but the current itself to drive them. "We are not done yet," he said defiantly. "Such direct spells may not succeed, but we can still put obstacles in the way of that damned necromancer and his minions." He relaxed. "The land below slopes down for a long distance to the east and south, from the mountains of Kuren. We have the higher ground," he said. "I intend to keep the Great Necromancer occupied. Summon clouds from the southwest - it's best if the north does not suffer a drought - and build up a glacier at the foot of the tower. Add stones and whatever else there is available. You will have to, otherwise there will not be enough time or natural resources to finish it." After the mages left, Ithrain cast a single bolt of lightning down at the approaching army. It seemed so far away, and yet at the speed of light, it was not. |

Still, Mordain watched the distant magic battle between Ithrain and the Great Necromancer. How Weissland was supposed to stand against such vast evil... But the fact that Ithrain and his associates were willing to try gave him strength. It gave him resolve. Thirty thousand soldiers; that was what he had, along with his Legion, the Seekers and the city's militia. It would have to do. On that thought, Mordain turned and made his way back to the tower. |

Ithrain knew not of the fates of his fellow mages, but he felt the attack on the Tower and felt the structure tremble. Such power. He had not thought it possible. An angry looking man burst through the door, followed by a small group, most afraid, some also angry. "Councillor Ithrain! What are you doing?!" Ithrain looked around him, realising how things must look to those of such shallow minds. "This," he said "is what we fight against. The affairs of a mage lord do not concern you. Leave the Tower if you want to live." Ithrain left no opportunity for protest. He cloaked himself from their eyes and pushed past them. In truth, he had no idea how to counter the Great Necromancer's siege, but found himself thinking thoughts he knew were considered dangerous. The archmage was too unwilling to act, not brave enough to use what power he had. Ithrain needed his trust. When he became invisible again, Ithrain had taken on a new shape. He looked down at his body. He was stronger and taller, and his robes did not suit him at all. He had to have leather armour, and most important of all, the sword. That would have to wait. Lathaon was gone. He changed back and ran down one of the walkways. The room he had been in collapsed, probably targeted by Drathmor. ((Ithrain might just have become more important than I had forseen. ))

"I am pathetic, aren't I?" Ithrain said, boldly. "After all, I serve peasants. I serve the weakest of Weissland's people as much as the strongest. What does that make me? Pathetic, like you said? Or benevolent?" |

((Going to post the dialogue here, for ease really.)) "Fool. Do you think these peasants will reward your efforts? There will be none to grant you gratitude when all lie dead before my armies. Only through me, little mortal, can you survive this." [[FYI: This dialogue is being spoken from the 'Between Ataya and the Great Wall' thread]] |

"But there is where you are wrong. Until you have tasted the darkness, the power, you cannot begin to understand what I can offer you." A bolt of lightning shot from the sky, shattering the glass that kept the mage from Drathmor. Then, the winds intensified and the thunder roared as a terrible void of darkness opened. It enveloped the walkway, sealing the mage in a bubble of blackest shadow. No light could penetrate it. Drathmor created another manifestation of himself, within this darkness. His new manifestation looked no different than his human form. He walked slowly through the shadows before suddenly arriving directly behind the man. "The arrogance of youth. You hold yourself with a code, with a strong belief that you are above me, above the darkness. No one is above the darkness. All mortals crave it. You crave the power. You cannot escape the desire. No matter what you tell yourself, you will always want the darkness." |

Ithrain turned around and backed away. "There are other kinds of power, other ways. I am a council mage, only two steps away from my ambition. You are asking me to give up everything to become a mere slave," Ithrain said. He was terrified, but he did his best to resist. "This is my homeland. It contains everything of importance to me. I do not want it destoyed!" |
