Mordain nodded. "As you wish, my Lord." He waited no longer and left the room. There was much that had to be done. |

*Rping as Talath Krae* Talath and Nola approached lord Mordain, saluting as they did so. Talath carried the light grey musette bag which Nathaniel had brought with him, and Nola held the crude oaken staff like a standard, resting against her shoulder. Talath spoke first "Lord Mordain, we come with ill news." |

"My council, I think there is nothing more to be said," Lathaon said loudly. "You are dismissed. Get on with your duties." He walked towards the far side of the room, to the other door which led towards the Tower of Omniscience - and his office. "Come," he said to Arhaina, taking her down the corridor. He waited until they reached the staircase before they shared a passionate kiss. "I missed you, Arhaina," he whispered in her ear. "I missed you too," she said. "But I'm going with you." |

Talath nodded and said "Nathaniel Drakkon was attacked by a vampire at Ordail. We attempted to fight the creature, but it overpowered us and captured him. It flew away with him. He has been captured by the Defiled Kingdom." |

Mordain sighed. "And what would you want done about this? The forces of Weissland are stretched thin. We are scattered in a time of great need. I do not have the time to mount a rescue effort for him." |

Talath frowned for a moment "We ask nothing Lord Mordain. We felt it was necessary that you were informed of his capture. From what little I know of him, I believe he would not want a rescue mounted while more important events are transpiring. Regardless, he will be beyond our reach by now, either by distance or death." |

"If he does not return, Seeker, then he will be honoured with the rest of the dead when this conflict is over. Return to your work." Mordain walked away from them, further down through the tower until he stood outside. |

Talath and Nola looked at each other as Mordain swept passed them. They said nothing, but returned to their duties. They held onto the musette bag and staff. Talath wondered what was happening to Nathaniel Drakkon, what injuries he was sustaining. Talath had only been stunned in the fight with the vampire, and Nola's injuries were shallow, her armour taking the brunt of the viscious swipe of the vampire's talons. The wounds had been cleaned and covered, and would heal in time. But Talath wondered if the wounds Nathaniel would suffer would ever heal, if he survived that was. |

"I have only just returned and already you're trying to argue with me," Lathaon said. "I dread to think what trouble you've caused while I was away." He lead her up the stairs. "Just what are you trying to say?" Arhaina replied. "I heard you tried to go to the Great Wall. Are you trying to get yourself killed?" "No!" she said. "I wanted to help." "You scare me more than any demon or undead creature ever could, sometimes. Wait," Lathaon said, suddenly stopping in the middle of the stairs. He sat down. "I'm not moving until you promise me you will not put yourself in danger again. At least not while I'm not around to stop you." "I can't promise that!" she said defiantly. "Then I'm not moving," he said, and folded his arms. She tried, unsuccessfully, to lift him to his feet. "Fine. I promise." "Thank you," Lathaon replied with a smile, and stood up. They continued to ascend the staircase until they reached the walkway into the Tower of Omniscience. It was a tiring walk to go so far upwards, so Lathaon was glad to walk across flat ground. The guard at the entrance stepped aside, and the archmage opened the door, allowing it to close after Arhaina had followed. "Where are we going, anyway?" Arhaina asked, then added quietly "to your bedroom?" "No, actually I was going to my office." "Sounds... equally exciting." "Arhaina, please don't start that. When I said two hours, I did not think to include anything extra. You are cruel, asking me to choose between you and Weissland - which good soldiers are dying for this moment." "I haven't seen you since you left for the White Realm, at the beginning of the war," she replied, irritated. "For some of that time, I was locked inside by my own guards. At least a soldier would die with glory." "I know of several books in my office which will show you exactly how glorious it is to die against the Defiled Kingdom," Lathaon said "and before you try to... distract me... again, think about what you would do in my situation. And think about how many people live in this empire - five million - and think what it would be like to have them all relying on you to help them." She gave up at that point, feeling quite guilty. Then Lathaon gave her a sly grin and told her he would remember her wishes when he next had time to spare. ((I'm afraid Mistrandar will not be able to surprise me and Arhaina in my bedroom, Ariakas, sorry ))

Mistrandar finally returned to his room after seeking out Ithrain and talking with him about how the counter-attack should be. He needed to prepare himself, get some rest and collect some of his equipment. It would be dangerous. As he stepped through the doorway, and closed the door he could sense a tinkling fear in his head. He turned quickly, and wind blew across the room. He saw the window had been opened. He sighed and was about to close it, as his hand suddenly froze to the window. Literally froze to it, the pain came slowly but he reacted slowly despite knowing what happened and when he finally withdrew his hand the skin on the tip of his fingers were left on the glass. He then heard a deep chuckle behind him, in a low baritone voice and realized that was what about to happened. What always happened, but somehow he always forgot it. Somehow all this meetings, no matter how frightening, painful or horrendous they were, they always disappeared into the clouded corners of his mind. As he turned around he could see the tall man covered in black clothing rose from the shadows behind his wardrobe. Mistrandar did not even get to cry out before an unnatural darkness filled the room. |

When Lathaon reached his office, he took the time to remove an old journal from his library, and laid it down on the desk. He then began searching the wall, repeating a whispered magical phrase as his hands brushed across the stones. Arhaina watched him, wondering what he was doing. He was in deep concentration, and after a while, she collected the journal from the desk and started to read it. At one point, Lathaon came across a loose stone, slid it out, but then sighed in disappointment and placed it back. Another thing she did notice was that even as the archmage continued to say the phrase, as soon as he had stopped to examine the stone, she had forgotten it. A while later, he found another, and returned to his desk cradling it in his arms. He placed it down and then tapped it. "That is getting quite irritating, Lath," Arhaina said, looking up from the journal. "Just what are you doing?" "I'm trying to open it," he replied, without stopping the steady tapping. "You have a go. Follow this rhythm, as soon as I- good - that's good. Carry on like that," he said, stepping back as Arhaina copied his example. "Why can't you just use your magic and blast it open?" she said, wondering why nothing was happening. "Is this even supposed to open?" "Yes, and what is inside is far too delicate, and far too dangerous as well, to 'blast open'. Though I don't think this has been opened for a very long time." |

Mordain walked through the vault beneath the tower. A series of caravans had been brought to outside the tower to house the artefacts as they were moved. Seekers, regular military units and even a small number of Royal Guards had been drafted to protect the caravans. Mordain looked at what lay within the vault; some items were good, others were evil. All were held here as they were deemed too powerful to be left in the world beyond. Mordain had hoped that he would not live long enough to see the vault emptied, for the responsibility of ensuring safe transportation was immense. Still, it was what the Archmage wanted and it was what was needed. Seekers moved through the chamber, carefully moving the artefacts from the vault to the wagons awaiting outside. One Seeker approached a crown, forged from black metal with dragon teeth set around the top as a series of horns. A chainmail covering fell down the back of the crown to safeguard the wearer's neck. Just before the man's hands touched it, Mordain stuck his staff between the man and the item. "Careful, Seeker. This item is not for one such as you to handle." said Mordain, his eyes fixed on the crown as he spoke. "My Lord, if I may, what is it?" asked the Seeker as he took a step back. Mordain's head moved slowly before settling upon the man. "The less you know of this artefact, Seeker, the safer you will be." The man nodded and then walked away. The Mage of Shadows moved to stand before the crown. He cracked the butt of his staff off the ground and it disipated in a cloud of smoke. Slowly, Mordain placed his hands upon the Crown of Damnation and lifted it, holding it at chest height. Instantly, he felt creeping whispers fill his mind. They spoke of power, unnending life and the submition of the world. A futile trick to play on one such as he; the promise of power would never tempt one such as Mordain. He carried it from the chamber to the caravans. As he walked, the crown still spoke of what it could bring him. He shut it out as best he could, but the voices could not be silenced. Emerging from the tower, he made his way towards the caravan. As he drew closer, the voices suddenly made him a new offer. -What of your love for the one called Shaellana- Mordain stopped, looking down at the crown. It was impossible to undo what had been done. And yet, Mordain found himself listening intently. -Think yourself lost? Think your love gone? The restoration of such a thing is nothing that I cannot achieve- It paused, letting Mordain think for a moment. -You know how to invoke my power, Mordain Thaendil. You need only embrace it and all you desire will be yours- Slowly, gradually, the crown was lifted closer and closer to his head. What harm could it be to try it on? Surely if it did not work, one such as he would have the strength to cast it aside. And if it was true, then he and Shaellana- No! He put the crown back to where it had been and continued walking. -You cannot deny me, foolish mortal-" Without paying heed to another word, Mordain put the crown inside a black chest. He closed the chest and locked it, placing the key within his robes. The chest was forged by the dwarves long ago from strongest metal. It was designed to hold an item such as this. The crown would be kept out of the reach of others, as long as it was kept in the chest. |

There was a crack as the surface split, then Lathaon opened it. He retrieved a fistful of the crystal inside and left what remained inside the stone. Contrary to most of the crystals which the archmage made use of, this was sharp and unrefined, and had an irregular, random shape. The material itself looked like glass. It was almost invisible, but did have a dim glow. "Do you know what this is?" he asked Arhaina. "Recognise it, even?" She looked puzzled. "What are you talking about?" When he held it closer to her, she seemed even more puzzled. "You can't see it, can you? Interesting," Lathaon said. He took her hand and tried to give her the crystal, but suddenly she cried out and leapt back. He was surprised, and it was impressive luck that he managed to catch it just before it would have struck the floor. "What happened?" he asked. "I don't know!" "Incredible. You are no magic-user, and still it resists," he said, thinking. "Well, I have found what I was looking for. I had a room built in secret in case this situation ever arose, you know. I wiped the memory of everyone involved. Come with me." He led Arhaina even further upwards. "Close your eyes," he said, as they came close to the top of the tower. "Illusions of many forms protect this place." When she opened them, she was in a bizarrely shaped room of a size she had not imagined. "Where are we?" she said, and then a dozen echoes answered her before the sound finally dissipated. "This room was designed so that I could say more than one thing at a time. You know what Ritual Magic is, don't you?" "No, Lath, I have no idea," she replied. "It is the combined strength of several mages in order to perform a spell which would be impossible otherwise. Nobody learns it here in the Tower, because while a typical spell causes only minor strain, the power of a ritual spell will literally fry the brain of even a Mage Lord. I built this room so that I could use Ritual Magic without the need for other mages to support me. Without the need for their limits." "Is that such a good idea?" she asked, with a look of some concern. Lathaon shook his head. "No, not usually. With this crystal, however, I can divert the power away from my own mind and contain it safely. It will likely be destroyed in the process, and that is for the better. Without it, this will be impossible to reverse." Arhaina was growing increasingly worried. "What are you doing?" "I am sealing off parts of this tower. When I had this room built, I also took the time to place runes around the perimeter. This crystal was made using the ancient lore, something which was forgotten long ago, which harnessed pure magic. When a mage casts a spell, he changes magical energy into energy with physical effects in this world, and in doing so, much is lost. No other magic in existence can overcome it. I will seal off the restricted parts and use this to prevent the protections from ever being undone by magical or non-magical means. There is no more of that particular type of crystal in existence. It is the rarest of its kind." "Are you sure you can do this, Lath?" "No, certainly not," Lathaon said, "but that does not stop me trying. I have thought through this before, and I will never be any more ready than I am now. Trust me." Lathaon began, chanting the words with precise timing and then switching to another phrase, until several different ones could be heard at once. Then they became louder and louder, and the archmage was concentrating almost enough to make him collapse. Then there was a sound of stone grating against stone, and a rumbling as things happened in the depths of the Tower. The crystal shattered in his hand and he fell, exhausted, into his wife's arms and there was an unsettling silence. He managed to whisper "it is done." |

It took Lathaon a while to recover, but then he quickly stood up, as if nothing had happened. "Well, I'm afraid after all that, I am going to have to destroy this room," he said. "It has served me well, and I'd rather it couldn't do the same for anybody else. They can build their own room." He pretended to start a spell but then stopped with a grin as Arhaina moved back towards the door. She didn't look at all amused. "Ah, come on. You couldn't find your way around up here. Illusions, remember? I'll do this from the entrance." "You never fail to both blow something up and take your work less seriously than a flying pig, every time I'm around, do you?" Arhaina asked. "Well if I saw a flying pig, it would only be natural to assume something was wrong, don't you think?" After stepping through the doorway, he blasted the ceiling and watched the room - and the one above - collapse. Lathaon gave a smile of satisfaction and led Arhaina back down the stairs. "Can I ask you something, Lath?" "Of course," he replied. "Why did you want to lead the attack yourself?" "Because I believe it is the right course of action to take, and because I want to see the enemy and face them," Lathaon said. "I do not want to hide behind my men." "Then you surely understand how I feel," Arhaina replied. "You have the choice to 'hide' as you call it, or to fight. Yet you give me no choice." "Please, Arhaina... how could I go on if you died?" he said. "I'm sorry. It is just that there is more to lose than to gain from sending you to battle." |
