Mordain watched Mordus. "Careful Mordus; be sure you are not taking on that which you cannot handle. If what you saw at Kuren has changed you this much, then perhaps you are not yet ready to serve."
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Mordus drained the last of the liquid and smashed the bottle as he casualy dropped it on the wooden floor. He wiped his mouth and stubble with the back of his hand and eyed Mordain.

"I am wounded, but not broken, Mordain. I deal with it in the manner I see fit." He glanced down at the broken bottle, eyes glazing over. "I want vengance. I want to find the powers responsible and I want to cast them down; to gouge their bloodied husks from from existance." He blinked and turned to Mordain again. "I will serve, I must."

((Sorry, all, it's been kinda a rough summer with my parents splitting up and stuff so I've been living with my girlfriend and...yeah that's how a lot of my time was spent. But I'm back living at my house and so I figured I'd come back to the roleplay with a big post, so...here it is. :P ))

James took a deep breath and raised his hand to knock on the door. He stopped it just inches from the wood, contemplating what he was going to say if and when the door finally opened. When, he reassured himself. When it opens. Taking another deep breath, he let his knuckles fall on the door, rapping several times before stopping. Seconds passed, seconds that seemed to him to be hours, but finally he heard the turn of a lock and the ornate door swung open to reveal a beautiful woman standing there. She was slightly taller than the average woman with fair skin that denoted her noble birth. Her mahogany hair and chestnut eyes accentuated her already stunning beauty, and when she saw James a smile exploded across her face.

“James!” she screamed, and flung herself at her husband.

“Rebecca,” said James softly, smiling himself as he returned her embrace with a tight squeeze and held her there for a moment.

“I missed you so much,” said Rebecca, resting her head on James’s shoulder. “Every day I wondered what was happening, when you were coming home. Now you’re here and I’m so happy.”

“I missed you too,” said James, and he kissed the top of her head softly. “But there is something we have to talk about.”

James knew Rebecca had heard the apprehension in his voice, because no sooner had the words passed his lips than Rebecca pulled away suddenly, her face showing her concern, and she asked, “What? What’s wrong?”

“It’s about your father,” said James. “He…”

But James did not have to say any more; Rebecca knew what was coming. Her bottom lip began to quiver, her cheeks fell, and her eyelids drooped. Tears began to slide slowly down her face, and she embraced James once again, holding him more tightly than she had before and letting her tears run off her face onto his tunic. James’s heart sank into his stomach, and he felt as if he wanted to vomit. He had never felt this horrible in his entire life, for he knew it was his own fault that Rebecca was feeling this way. She had to know. He had to tell her.

“Rebecca…”

“What?” sobbed his wife.

“Rebecca…I killed him.”

Suddenly, the sobbing stopped, and Rebecca pulled her head off of James’s shoulder so she could look at him. Her eyes were red and her cheeks soaked with tears. “Please tell me that isn’t true,” she said weakly with longing in her voice.

“I’m…I’m sorry,” stammered James. “I…I…I had to…” But then he shook his head. “No I didn’t.”

Rebecca now yanked herself out of James’s embrace. “How could you?!” she screamed, her face red from both being angry and crying. “How could you?! He was like a father to you! He was my father! Didn’t you know what that would do to me!” Tears began to rush out of her eyes again and her voice faltered, but she continued, “What were you thinking? No, you probably weren’t thinking, were you…you stupid…hot-headed…moron! You let your…bloodlust get the…best of you! The…the war…went to your head!”

James stood there, unable to say anything, searching for something to say but unable to find anything.

“You…you…disgust me!” spat Rebecca through her tears. “‘Lord Castoden’ indeed,” she said mockingly. “There is nothing lordly about you, James. You’re a…a barbarian! And I…regret the day…I ever…fell in love with you.”

“You don’t mean that,” said James pleadingly.

“Oh…oh…I do,” replied Rebecca. “Get out of here.” Then with that, she stepped back inside and slammed the door, leaving James alone on the front step, alone and distressed. Unable to do anything, but unwilling to leave, James turned around and sat down, slumping against the door and closing his eyes. How long he sat there he had no idea, but after some time he heard a familiar voice calling for him.

“Milord! Milord!”

Opening his eyes, James saw Darnil running towards him, calling his name. Forcing himself to stand up, James asked, “What is it?”

“Where have you been, Milord?” asked Darnil.

“I had to see my wife,” replied James.

“The Lords Thaendil and the other leaders are discussing the war plans,” said Darnil. “They requested your presence some time ago but decided to begin without you.”

James shook his head. “I cannot.”

“Milord, you must,” said Darnil. “You cannot abandon your duties. You are the Lord Castoden!”

“Am I?” asked James sharply.

“Milord?”

James shook his head and walked past Darnil into the open street. “Am I the Lord Castoden?”

“Yes, Milord,” said Darnil, somewhat confused.

James shook his head again. “I am the Lord Castoden in name only. My actions would say otherwise.”

“Milord, your actions prove you to be the Lord Castoden,” said Darnil. “You led our army to victory at Ortin, beneath the Sentinel Peaks, and at Villiath. You are the Lord Castoden.”

James wheeled to face Darnil. “I murdered a man, Darnil. I executed him.”

“He was the commander of the enemy force, Milord,” countered Darnil.

“The battle was over,” said James. “He was unarmed. There was no need to kill him. And now, knowing we were set up to fight the Realmers…I can’t believe I killed him.”

“You can’t look at the past through the eyes of the present,” said Darnil.

James shook his head. “I can’t do this anymore.”

At that point, Darnil, who had previously been calm and reserved, trying to persuade his lord, suddenly became agitated and loud and shouted, “Never in my life have I seen a nobleman, a Lord of Weissland, so selfish!”

James looked at him in amazement. “What?”

“Here you are, wallowing in self-pity while your homeland is assailed by hordes of the Enemy,” said Darnil. “The Great Wall is under attack, Weissland is being invaded, and yet here you sit, thinking only of yourself. You’re right, you are not the Lord Castoden. You’re a child, a whining, complaining, weak child.”

“How dare you,” said James, taking a threatening step towards Darnil.

“I dare because the people of Weissland require me to dare!” shouted Darnil. “You are the Lord Castoden! You are one of the finest swordsmen to ever walk this earth! You are a fantastic general! The men respect you and will follow you anywhere, something which can hardly be said for many of our generals! Weissland needs you, James, and you are turning your back on them!” Darnil softened somewhat and said, “You will have time to make peace with yourself later, believe me, but right now you are needed by others…you are needed for something greater than yourself.” However, James stood there, unmoving. After a moment, Darnil turned and said, “Very well, then; this is how the Castoden House ends.” He began to walk away, and James stood there and watched.

Then, when Darnil was almost out of sight, James shouted, “Wait!” Darnil turned, and James began to sprint down the street towards him. He closed the distance quickly and upon reaching his Lieutenant said, “Forgive me, Darnil; you are right. Weissland is the most important thing now.”

“Very good, Milord,” said Darnil simply, but the wide smile across his face told James the man was very pleased.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The guards opened the doors to the hall and James walked in, greeted instantly by a sea of odd stares from the various leaders who were gathered there. Some of the gazes were unfavorable, and all were curious. “Milords,” said James, bowing slightly. “Forgive me for my absence. I am here now to serve Weissland.”

Ariakas turned his head to James Castoden. The man had turn up earlier than he thought he would.

Very well, Weissland needed James Castoden now. That much Ariakas' was sure about, that James Castoden would be more important to the people of Weissland in the upcoming crisis than most other leaders of Weissland.

Mordain only nodded before walking outside, waiting for Mordus to join him so that the two could return to the tower.

Mordus reached behind the counter sureptiously and drew forth yet another bottle. This time stowing it away beneath his cloak. He followed Mordain silently outside, much more numb than when he had arrived.

With Mordus beside him, Mordain made his way back to the tower.

-----

Mordain and Mordus walked into the council chamber once more, Mordain approaching Lathaon. "My Lord, Mordus is ready to carry out whatever task you have for him."

"Ah, James, you have come," Lathaon started as the other two came in and then acknowledged them. "Mordus, Mordain, welcome back."

"James, is something the matter? You are the Lord Castoden; you should be proud and confident and inspiring. Lord. Not servant."

Lathaon tried as best as he could to listen to both as he talked to them in turn.

"Thank you, Mordain," he said. "Mordus, are you fit to lead our ground forces against the enemy advancing through the Pass?"

Mordain could see that his cousin had enough on his mind for the time being. "Forgive me, my Lord, but there is one last task I must preform. I shall return shortly."

He turned and walked from the chamber yet again. This time, his path took him deep beneath the tower. He traversed the ancient corridors for what seemed to be an endless period of time until finally reaching a pair of massive, stone doors. Mordain pushed his hand against its surface and magic flared across its surface.

Mordus took a step forward and gave a short bow, drawing his arms to his sides as he did so.

Ariakas looked intently at both James and Mordus from his position in the corner.

He could sense the wave working here now, the wave forming their lives and fates. For some reason however, the disharmony he had sensed so much before did not disappear despite Mordain Thaendil leaving the room.

He looked at Haidas and Lathaon in turn. So who was it then?

((Ariakas, what are you on about? :P ))

"Good. We are planning to disrupt their forces as they advance. To slow them and destroy them as much as we can. I am going to lead an attack from the air to take out their leaders, but along with that we are going to need support from the ground to keep them on their toes as well as the traps we hope to set for them. This area is home to you, Mordus. You know the land as well as or better than anybody. If you are indeed ready, I think you would make a good leader."

The ancient doors opened slowly and Mordain passed through. The chamber he entered was large and circular, twelve pillars evenly spaced about it to support the ceiling. Carvings of battles long past covered the walls. And, in the middle of the chamber sat a beautfil red gem. It was easily the size of a man's head. The stand it sat upon was formed from brilliant, white ebony. Power radiated from it, something which only those trained the magical arts could detect.

Mordain walked to the gem and placed his hand upon it. He felt its power fill him and he spoke his message.

"Dragon Lords one and all, you must return to Ataya. The Dark Lord has returned and we are all needed to fight against him!"

As silence descended on the hall, James said, "I am the Lord Castoden, but I bear that title only to serve the people of Weissland and their Lord. I exist to serve the realm; what would you have me do?"

"You are a Castoden whether you want to bear the title or not. Considering the fact that you are here in Weissland, among the council, I would guess that at least a part of you has come to accept your full identity already," Lathaon said with a faint smile. "Now, as to what you ought to do next, you do have a say in the matter. You have shown yourself to be an impressive general, yet you are also the Lord Castoden - Mordain previously pointed out that the people of Ataya could use a leader to give them hope and to help with the evacuation. You could do that, or you could lead the defense. Or you could think of a better course of action."

Ariakas rose from his seat and moved along the wall, trying to not draw any unnecessary attention, and moved to the other side of the room.

He stopped behind Lathaon and James, walking directly behind Mordus.

"Weisslander," he whispered. "When will you be going to the Pass of Kuren?"
