Mistrandar's face turned a light red color, then he spoke with a stiff jaw, "I will find my place my lord, don't you worry." Then he threw a glance at Ithrain, the smile in rival mage lord disappearing quickly.

"I might help with the laying out the traps in the valley my lord," Mistrandar finally said. "Unless you don't want to go through with that."

"I do," Lathaon said. Noticing Ithrain, he added "Ithrain, either save your conflicts for the enemy or leave and get on with your task."

((Well, you should maybe not have made that joke and encourage it then ;) ))

"You do?" Mistrandar asked confused. "Then who is to lead the troops on the ground? They might be carried to the pass of Kuren by eagles, but it might be useful to have complete knowledge off these hidden pathways through the mountains."

"Perhaps Mordus might be up to the job? Kuren was his home, after all."

Mistrandar nodded, "Yes. He would be most fitting for the task. If he is able to fulfill any task for Weissland at the moment," with that he threw a questioning glance towards Mordain.

Mordus walked rapidly down the main street in the market district, turning sharply to the left and entering the doorway of a nearby inn. He kept his hood on as he made for the barman, wanting to shut out everything. He retrieved a small pouch from beneath his cloak and placed it on the counter, the sound of coinage drawing the dawdling barman's attention.

"Bring me firewine." Said Mordus, in a tone denying anything but compliance.

In the absence of the barman he sought out a lone table in a dark corner and lurked there until he was brought an ornate silver cup into which the barman proceeded to pour a murky liquid. The man drew away the bottle but Mordus raised his hand.

"Leave it." He said.

The barman did as he was instructed and hurried off, intent on staying clear of his chilling customer. Mordus brought the vessel to his lipps and downed the beverage, only to fill it again and repeat the same action.

Mordain said nothing to Mistrandar, only turning to his cousin. After being permitted to leave, he did so and moved through the tower. He knew that if Mordus was to do such a task, then Mordain would have to speak with him first. He took him some time to learn that Mordus had left the tower and moved into the city. He took a horse from the stables and made his way down, using his magic to seek out Mordus.

His search brought him to a tavern. He entered, his appearance bringing silence over the room. Seeing Mordus in the back of the room, he made his way towards him, but stopped, looking around the room first.

"Everyone get out of here. What will transpire here is of no business of yours." he said coldly.

The patrons and staff made their way outside, some throwing the odd look of annoyance backwards, but quickly turning away if Mordain's gaze fell upon them.

"Mordus, the Archmage has a task he wishes you to carry out. Tell me, do you feel able to handle a charge from our Lord?" asked Mordain, once the room had emptied.
"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil.

"It really is amazing; she killed Kelan Wealer, not that I am complaining, but then the order welcomed her as their new leader. It makes one wonder if I were to ram a blade down her throat, would the monks then follow my commands?" - Mordain Thaendil.

Ariakas sat in his chair, looking around at the people in the council room discussing among themselves.

Then he openly asked Lathaon, "Thaendil," he said. "How much longer will you have me stay by your side?"

Mordus roused from his stupper at the sound of Mordain's voice, a bitter reminder of what now seemed to him a wretched existance. He raised his head and drained the last of the bottle in one fell motion and brought it crasking down on the hardwood table, lacerating his hand with shards of glass. Unflinching he opened his hand, blood and glass falling away as he did so.

He stood up and spoke murkily. "I will serve untill my last breath." Murder seething from him.

"Show me the enemy and I will smite his ruin upon the cold earth." He added savagely.

Mordain hesitated for a moment, weighing his options. Still, faith for Mordus remained within him yet. "If that is your choice, Dark Seeker, then the Archmage wishes you to aid in navigation of the Kuren Mountains. He wants traps constructed and vantage points found. Beyond this, I know nought of your task, but the Archmage will surely grant you the details."

"Ariakas, I am not going to bring you into this war," Lathaon replied. "Quite what you should do next, I am not sure."

Mordus noded gravely and walked stiffly to the counter of the bar. He stopped and pondered for a moment before reaching behind it and withdrawing another bottle, this time port. He unstoppered it and took a long draught, still retaining his balance and composure yet clearly lacking in subtlety.

Ariakas nodded to himself. "Then I will go to the Pass of Kuren," he suddenly proclaimed.

Most of the council members, among them Haidas and Mistrandar, looked surprised at him.

"If you're worried for the safety of a foreign diplomat inside your borders, you're the one that needs to assign a bodyguard. I will not go and recruit among your people Thaendil."

He rose from his chair. "I believe I should go with Mordus. I'm too am familiar with the Kuren mountains."

"Very well," Ariakas said. He turned to Haidas, "Should not the city be prepared, as Lord Thaendil here said'?"

((I did, ages ago... I was waiting for Andy...))

"Of course. I will take my leave then," Haidas replied, and left the room.

Mordain watched Mordus. "Careful Mordus; be sure you are not taking on that which you cannot handle. If what you saw at Kuren has changed you this much, then perhaps you are not yet ready to serve."
