"How do you know? Everyone one who serves a master is part of a ploy more deeper than he himself understands. That is the law of evil trickery," he grinned. "You're a vampire, and in these dark times where the undead prowls across the land of the Defiled Kingdom there's little doubt on who you're really loyal to. I should have seen this before, and I not been to hasty in testing these new powers that flows in my veins. Do you serve the Great Necromancer?" |

"Your necromancer never told you who you would find here. He could just have asked us to give up the tome instead," Grobtak shrugged. |

The vampire laughed again, the sound echoing around the chamber. He replied "You seemed very prepared to give up the tome didn't you? And taking this power for yourself, trying to usurp leadership from your little master are you?" |

"He told me to do it," Grobtak said. "The voice. It's some kind of spiritial or incorporeal being. It led me to this tome, and beckoned me to use it. That voice is not my master, I do not know what kind of agenda it has. But serve a far greater purpose than power for myself." |

Kor'Mor'Oka said "The voice spoke to me also. It seems obvious the voice was trying to play us both off against each other. But now you have the power and I have the book, I'm guessing that we don't need both or you would no longer have the power." |

The voice watched the events unfold. Its power darkened and the room itself seemed to shift into a more malevolent existence as the voice pondered what these creatures would do. So much planning... he could not allow these pathetic creations to compromise his triumph! |

"Stand against me if you must, for of course you will. Conflict is just another part of this flawed reality. You need to cling to your concepts and purposes, your feeble honour and glory. None of it serves any purpose in the end. And the end draws close." - Krodalis Thaendil. "You take the tome then, and bring it to Drathmor as well as greetings from the Dark Council," Grobtak said. "However, there is something malign about it all, I still feels like I should take it and keep it to myself. That is probably part of its magic, and were it not for my strong oaths to my own master, then I would likely have succumbed to by yearning for it. But I have gotten more than I wish for, and I have learned the power demands a price." |

Kor'Mor'Oka replied "Power always demands a price." Quickly he changed into the elven form, his stature getting smaller so that he could leave through the very small stairway. He tucked the book securely into his belt and turned to leave. Still he kept his senses tense, just in case. |

Grobtak looked around in the room, he could hear the the sound of fighting upstairs dying down. He had to leave now, even though he felt invinsible there's was no sense fighting that horde of ghouls. "Now," he said aloud in the chamber, calling to the Voice. "He received the book. Why can't you use his master, Drathmor, as your tool instead of me?" |

As Kor'Mor'Oka left the steps and walked back into the room from where he had entered, he changed his form back to that of a vampire. Quietly, almost soundlessly, he turned and moved the bookcase over the doorway. In a few minutes, he had gathered other wooden furniture and other things, piling them beside the door. From the wall he took a large candle, smiling as he set it against the books on the shelves. He waited until several books were ablaze, and the wood was starting to burn as well. Then he left the building by the front door. Outside there were only a handful of the Shattered Sword guards left, surrounded by the ghouls. Kor'Mor'Oka killed two guards with his talons then took to the sky before any of the others could react. Landing on a rooftop a couple of buildings distant from the square, he looked back at the mayor's building, seeing that the fire was spreading quickly. He smiled sickly. |

Grobtak stood waiting for a long while, waiting for the Voice to return to the chamber but it did not. He understood little of what ploy it played out here, but the thoughts fled from his mind as an intense pain filled his head. He fell to his knees and clutched his skulls with his hands. "What are you doing servant?" the voice asked. "What is this place?" "I do not know, Lord Dantares," Grobtak cried out. "I was going to tell you. It is ancient however, it was shown to me by a deity, spirit or other incorporeal being. I do not understand it yet." "You are changed Grobtak. Your powers are beyond what you have been able to fullfill before, and what is that flowing in your veins? Magic?" The voice of laughed in his head, filling it with ringing. Grobtak breathed heavily, tried to stand up but could not. "This matters little, Endral has lost its importance now. The Shattered Sword had paid its use and almost every member are now dead. You must move on Grobtak, to the center stage. Now. You have little time." The pain disappeared instantly, but Grobtak wasted little time in satisfaction of the relief. He had little time, and turned as he smelled smoke and felt the heat coming from the entrance to the chamber. Quickly hurried up the tight hallway and saw that the vampire had pushed the staircase to cover the doorway. The woodwork was burning, he could see it. With a roar he pulled magic to himself, blasting the old bookcase away and leaping into the room. It was ablaze, a burning inferno. Everything was on fire, the girl in shackles in the room was already dead but Grobtak ran towards her. He picked up a knife at the floor and cut into the abdomen of the girl, splitting her guts open. From her stomach he withdrew a small leather pocket feeling his ring inside. He had been careful not wandering into the chamber with it. As he rose from the corpse he saw Gohin, Turak and Orn, another member of the Shattered Sword, stand in the doorway. They had to be the last survivours. Very well, he would make good use of them. He looked out of the stained window as the flames stormed around him. The vampire was still in Endral, but it mattered little. Lord Dantares called him to do his bidding, and Grobtak would answer. "We leave Endral now," he said to the others and beckoned them out through the door. Shortly thereafter, after an intense escape through the furious inferno and a few encounters of ghouls which Grobtak and Gonhin made short work of, the four of them escaped through a back door. The Mayor's Building began to fall apart behind them. |

Kor'Mor'Oka watched from the skies as he flew, high enough to avoid being seen. The building was ravaged by fire, perhaps the wind would even spread it to other buildings. His opponent had managed to escape along with three others. The vampire did what he did better than anyone, track his prey. He was undetectable unless he wished otherwise. |

Grotbak used a mind spell to foil and trick the ghoul hordes so they did not need to be halted as they made their way through the city. After half an hour they reached the gates. There was little left but blood and gore of the Shattered Sword soldiers stationd there. Grobtak and his men wasted little time but proceeded through the gate and out of the city. Endral was left in darkness, burning fury and the clutches of the festering ghouls. |

Kor'Mor'Oka continued to follow them, all the way to the city gates and beyond. He had the book, but felt it prudent to eliminate his opponent anyway. Loose ends were not welcome. |

The four men began a long trek first through the pine forest surrounding the city of Endral, then up a few long sleek hills. The sky shined blue above them now, and the sun touched their skins for the first time in many weeks. It was a relief to Turak and Orn. A man on a crest above them, to the south spotted them from a far and came to meet them. He was dressed in strong leather armor, carried a large crossbow at his back and a grey moustace and beard. His name was Telen, not a member of the Shattered Sword but another one of Grobtak followers and aides. He had with him, except for his own horse, three other horses. He lifted a fist as a greeting. "He is here to pick us up right?" Turak asked aloud. Grobtak nodded. As the Telen reached them he nodded respectfully to Grobtak before saying, "I have no more horses than these Grobtak." Grobtak shrugged, turned around and called out to one of his men. "Orn," he said. The man stepped forward, only to suddenly have the arms of Gonhin around his head and neck. He resisted for a tiny hearbeat before Gonhin broke his neck without frowning or blinking. Then the other mounted up beside Telen and began to ride north. |

It was then that the voice chose to act; Grobtak had escaped his clutches in the chamber, and had out-smarted the ghouls he took control of to stop the mortal. Now was when the voice would subdue this mortal. A shriek of raw, malevolent power echoed for miles as the voice focussed its will upon Grobtak, causing searing, unrellenting agony upon the creature. Grobtak fell to the ground from his horse under the pain. "You will serve me, mortal!" roared the voice, sounding not only within Grobtak's head but also within the whole area. It boomed with the force of a mighty storm. |

Grobtak was shocked by the sudden pain which struck his body as he fell from his horse. The three riders watched in horror as he rolled on the ground, but slowly he managed to force the incredible pain out from his head, out from his mind. "I will not," Grobtak said. "You have no true power, I gave you no word. Whatever trap you hid between the words written in the tome is of no effect. I will not serve a trickster." Turak, Gonhin and Telen reiner their horses around, looking to the sky wondering where the voice came from. |

Kor'Mor'Oka had tracked his prey as far as he could. He had entered the city at night, and had only been there for a couple of hours, no more. When they left, he trailed them, but as dawn had approached, he had flown on, knowing the general direction they were travelling in. Finding a cave, he had concealed himself to wait for nightfall. But since he had flown on some distance, by the time night fell again, his prey would be barely half a day ahead of him. He could easily catch up to them in the night, scent them from miles away. The hunt was far from over. |
