Yeah, okay... very silly of me to say that. The movies got humour, but it's in a completly different way IMO. And I'm so glad you did not like Legolas, although I did like the way he was in FOTR. There he did none of that overrated stuff, but there was a very few moments where I thought he really felt real Elven. Like when he walked on the snow as it was hard ground, or they way he moved much more easier than the rest of the Fellowship while fleeing through Moria, the acceptable kills he made, the way he acted in Lórien and so on. Though some of his lines in Rivendell was quite irritating. |

I have to agree with Ariakas that the books were by far the better, and that the films were too...untrue to the book's humor. Yeah, they needed to put in humor that everyone could understand, and not the kind of humor that was subtle (and I presonally prefer), but they took it too far. The films were nowhere near as dark as the books, which disappointed me, as I really thought that the feeling of hopelessness and defeat was central to the books' atmosphere. |

True, but its one of the sacrifices which sort of had to be made for the films. I would assume they had to try to keep the films down to a more family level, if you get my meaning, whereby the families would be equally able to enjoy the films on different levels. And I truly hated Legolas in the films, he was ok in FOTR, but he does start to go downhill even there. Especially at Amon Hen. Ok it was a battlescene, but Tolkien clearly stated that Legolas acheived the least of the entire Fellowship, presumably including Merry and Pippin. So I found his cave-troll bronco-busting and siege skateboarding and mass Mumak pwnage extremely annoying. I thought that the reason the counting game didn't work as well as the book was because they made Legolas so arrogant about it. In the book he states when his score has passed Gimli's in a more grim way. He mentions that "its been knifework." And after reading the books that comment came across as if he is saying it because its been a struggle, and that its not necessarily a good thing. Instead of in the film where they take too much joy in it. But there were some truly great parts of the films, and just seeing someone's vision of the books before your eyes was amazing. I especially liked Theoden's speeches and the general atmosphere around Rohan and the Rohirrim. IMO Theoden, Denethor, Gandalf, Saruman and a couple of other characters were perfectly cast. Now when I think of those characters, I think of the actors as well. With some, such as Legolas, Aragorn and a few others I stray back to the books. |

I think Legolas was alright on Amon Hen. And when Tolkien said Legolas achieved the least of all the members of the Fellowship I don't think Tolkien was thinking about number of kills during the journey. But you have a point, Tolkien said it. And there was nothing wrong with the Cave Troll-fight because the Mazarbűl battle was excellent in my opinion. Rohan was great though, and it was pretty much how I had visualized it in the book. |

I didn't mean in numbers of kills either. I meant in terms of attitude, ability. In the books he doesn't strike me as someone who gets stuck into fights like he does in the films. He seems more removed from the action, calm, no wasted movement. Ok he should be agile, but that doesn't mean he has to be jumping all over the place stabbing arrows in an Uruk's eye and things like that. And the cave troll fight was excellent. But It just seemed so un-necessary for him to be standing on top of the cave trolls back shooting three arrows at the same time. He's not Robin Hood. |

Well, it goes for me. But maybe that's I'm comparing to him using the oliphaunt as a playing-ground.

I have to agree, the atmosphere of Rohan, its culture, and people was wonderfully done. Personaly as far as places go I liked Cirith Ungol (Whitch King's Shack. Spelling?) the best. |
