We all know that The Lord of the Rings is an epic adventure, but to some people, especially children and those who had not read the Hobbit, some struggled to fully understand the basic story without reading books. This leads me to a question - what elements from the book do you think the film-makers could have included to make the opening to the story less vague? Or do you think the start of the Fellowship of the Ring sets the scene well? Your thoughts please. In my opinion, whilst I think how the story of the Ring is well documented, I think other elements are slightly less developed. The Battle of the Last Alliance, if expanded into a full epic battle-scene, would have made the seperation of the Ring from its master much more emotional/meaningful to the audience, and perhaps some explanation of how the power of Numenor and the Elves delcine over the years. |

Actually I thought that FOTR introduced the story very well. I'd have liked to see an extended prologue purely to see more of the battle. I think people struggled with the basic story because it was a film. For a long time there were no epic films with a complex or engrossing story behind them. And the constant romantic-comedies and no-plot, no-story, action movies made people get lazy. So they struggled with the plot. Although I don't know why, its a fairly simple story. The ring is evil, go destroy it, try to stay alive in the process. |

I agree. Its much like the Da Vinci Code and the Matrix trilogy. All of these recent chick-flicks have turned us into a nation, even a world, of boring, no-plot-movie watchers. Perhaps you think it is a simple story because you have read the book? I had only read the Fellowship of the Ring by the time I had seen the first movie, and was still very unclear on the plot. Perhaps that was because I never read the Hobbit until 2003. |

Actually I saw FOTR at the cinema, in early December that year. I got the trilogy of books that Christmas. So I saw the film before reading the book, and it made perfect sense to me. I think it probably stems from the fact that I already read a lot of books anyway and I refuse to watch rom-coms and when I watch action films without much plot I just switch off and enjoy the action. I think that if you keep your mind active and exercised by doing stuff like reading detailed or complex books then you'll probably understand a complex film easily as well. |

Lets face it though - the number of people who read complicated literature these days is declining. I mean, the reaidng ages of children in the UK are on average, far below the National Predicted Averages - a 14-year-old in my class has a reading age of 11 and only 13 of the 28 in the top English class in my school have a reaidng age above their own birth age (13 or 14). |

Thats because Britain is a geneticaly stagnant cesspool
You need Imigrants like me to keep you on your feet  Reality asside....To me the only thing wrong with the films was the ending of Return of the King; simply mind numbing. |

Yeah, the ending was tedious. And they claimed that the scouring of the shire would be anti-climactic. So the dull ending wasn't? And Britain isn't a genetically stagnant cesspool. Imigrants are not needed to keep us on our feet but are welcome none the less. As for the people who don't want imigrants here, god forbid our celtic, viking, anglo-saxon, norman blood should ever become too diverse. |

Yeah I found it quite funny how basicly all of Britains history consists of being invaded

Yeah, but the main difference between Britain and other countries is that while we've been invaded loads of times the place never properly gets conquered. Invaders show up, several battles and then after a while they become just another part of the population. I think its because the English fight and then get sneaky, lulling the invaders into a false sense of security, the Welsh just don't bother fighting, and the Scottish cause more trouble than the invaders anyway, so they give up and leave. Its a combination of defiance and apathy. Back on topic though, I think the films worked quite well at portraying the books without losing focus on the quest to destroy the ring. I'd have been tempted to include things like the attacks on Erebor and Lothlorien in the war of the ring or the battle at the fords of Isen. But it would distract from the quest. |

Well, we can expect, hopefully, to see some of this in the Directors Cuts. Whenever New Line decide to release them. |

Yeah, I just hope they don't wait too long. 10 year anniversary could be a possibility. But I hope its sooner. |

I saw FOTR then read the books and then Watched ROTK and TTT, I would ahve liked to see more of TLA battel expanding more on the decline of men and elvs (as gorfang said.) I am unsure if The scrouging of the shire would have addded anything to the movie as It would have added maybe half an hour to the film if not more. However aside from the extended version nothing touched on what had happened to Sauraman so I would have liked to see that. |

(It was me who said about the decline of the Numenoreans and the Elves ;)) Scouring of the Shire made the book an anti-climax, I am glad they did not include it. |

As I said, they claimed that the scouring of the shire was anti-climactic, but then they gave us an ending which dragged on for about twenty minutes. |
