I like Gandalf after all without him I doubt the free people whould had any chance at all Dylan is right that there was another one there (but I thought it was two other soldiers + the brothers), but I doubt that he was Beregond
in fact, there was only one of the Black Rider there (atleast that was what Boromir said himself) |

That's not what I've read...then there surely must be many versions of lotr...I read that Boromir and his brother faced the nine on the bridge, and managed to beat them back long enough for the bridge to be destroyed. I am absolutely positive it was not Beregond, his heritage goes back to the blood of Elendil and he is a good warrior, which is why I do not believe it was him. He was one of the 3 companies of the Citadel Guards, not a captain at all, that was his brother, Ioras, who commanded at least 1 of these 3 companies. Well...at any rate, 1 of the nine is enough to match a captain of Gondor during the days of its gloom easily, it could probably match 3 captains. |

True. But the nines main weapon, is fear, if that fails they'll have a hard time killing their enemies. |

Ah, you underestimate the nine. Tolkien said their most powerful weapon was fear, as he also said about the army of the dead. They had strong weapons and swords and good skills...but it is also stated that they are hardly ever challenged at this stage due to their ability to make people fear them is so strong, they often flat out flee. The Dunedain are the only actual mortal regiment in the third age that ever stood up to them, and that was at a crossing near to the shire, in which case the Dunedain stood up to the 9 and demanded they go back to Mordor and not enter the shire...they, unfortunately were slaughtered. Think about that, an entire regiment of the Dunedain, brave enough to stand up the the Nazgul without Strider, their captain, and they are cut down with ease by the 9...this suggests they have great prowess in all areas. If you don't believe me Ariakas, reread Unfinished Tales of Middle Earth, it should be under the chapter that includes something in its title about the 9 and their crossing into the Shire. |

I'll quote something exactly for you: The Return of the King: Chapter 1: Minas Tirith, Page 41: "Twenty nine!" said the lad and whistled. "Why, you are quite old! As old as my uncle Iorlas. Still," he said. "I wager I could stand you on your head or lay you on your back." That was Bergil talking to Pippin, when they very first meet. Do more research on Iorlas on the net and you'll see one of two things come up about him eventually. EDIT: It'd be good to know PJ made this character (my avatar) Iorlas. |

yeah, but you said Ioras and not Iorlas... that confused me, and I was not intelligent enough to think about a writing-mistake |

I don't...some expert said so so I believed him...it was on a different forum when we were debating who that was in the movie, the captain...and most said imrahil, and one guy said Iorlas and gave a bunch of history on him...well...I do know for certain that he was a better warrior than Beregond...heck, maybe it was him at Osgiliath...have faith, just because it's not written doesn't mean it couldn't happen. The character Iorlas is so vague that if everyone believed him to be a captain as PJ portrayed him, then he would actually be a captain, as Tolkien never said that he wasn't. |

it's not the same guy... Iorlas is a guy invented by Tolkien and the only thing we know about him is that he is the uncle of Bergil and that way either the brother or the brother-in-law of Beregond Irolas is a guy invented by the movie guys (Jackson and buddies). We know that he has some important role in the Citadel Guard and the defences of the city, but apart from that we only know that he is one of those stupid guys who Jackson could have done a wonderfull job with had he only thought about the potential of the character. They could be the same guy yes, but you can not say that he is just because there is no evidence that he is not. |

øhm, now your only repeating yourself, I don't believe Iorlas to be a captain, and I know a great deal of other Tolkien fanatics who don't |
