i have girl rats only and recently one in particular is driving us all nuts (rats and humans included)

fred just will not stop humping the other girls and she is getting rather violent!

i dont want little rat babies so i was wondering if there was anything can be done to stop her lesbian orgies??!!

i have been waiting for her to just get through it and stop but she dont seem to be getting out of her system she chases them round something rotten all day and has kept doing so for like 2months now, im only concerned as she keeps picking on florence and poor florence dont need to be flung about like a ragdoll - she had a mild stroke some time back and has never fully recovered - her balance is a little off and her head tilts slightly. i dont mind fred picking on the others but i have seen poor florence fall a few times while trying to get away from fred's advances. the cage is as fabric decked out as i can make it so that every potential fall has a "safety net" for florence and usually she is fine and totally normal but the stress of fred doesnt help her.

is there anything i can do to stop fred driving us all nuts? i had wondered if getting a castrated male and putting him in there would help? perhaps he and fred can get it out of her system. but is that a bad idea? will the male do the same thing as fred and just have a different rat pestering everyone for sex?

any advice would be great!

Hi,

This is quite normal behaviour in some doe rats but it usually doesn't last long. Different rats act differently too, i've had some which are almost to the point of your girl and others where you couldn't notice at all if they were in heat.

How long has she been like this for? I have heard of some cases whereby the doe is "stuck" in heat for longer than she should be. It can lead to some problems and you need to be careful of infection.

You have a couple of options basically. You can either get her spayed which will bring her out of heat straight away and she'll never go into heat again, or leave her and see how she goes for a bit longer. You don't want to leave it too long though as obviously she is causing stress too herself and her cagemates.

I know that for Ferrets there is also a hormone which can be injected by a veterinarian to bring the animal out of heat - i'm not sure if this is available for rats so you'd need to enquire.

In terms of a castrated buck - not really a good idea. Infact it could make her worse - having a buck nearby will make her want to mate, and castrated males are unable to bring a female out of season. So it'd be a bit of a tease.

its been atleast 6 weeks - but could be up to 8 weeks since she started doing it now. it does sound rather like you say that she could be stuck in heat! im glad i didnt get a male after reading your reply lol! i will give her another week and book her in at the vets, i hope they do have injections for rats, a castration is something i doubt i could afford right now with paws the cat's heart condition draining hundred of pounds out the wallet and he has another appt this week with the specialist and probably another ecocardiogram- ouch for me!

Sorry to hear that - these things come at the wrong times with pets don't they?

If there is something like an injection which might do the trick then it is probably a better option health-wise anyway. A spay is a serious operation for such a small animal.

As you said you're going to give her another week or so, what i'd do in that week is make sure the light levels aren't too intense. I know rats wouldn't naturally be exposed to much light anyway, but there is some evidence that suggests that they do become more fertile with seasonal changes (strange because now it's getting darker anyway!).

If she's really bullying the other rats it might be an idea to isolate her for awhile but still keep her with another dominant female who can hold her own.

no one holds their own against her - she has been humping her way up the pecking order zand her new fav's to hump have become the top 2 females LMAO

she has calmed down an awful lot though so im just keeping an eye on her.

how often do rats go into heat? i mean she seems to be coming out of it now but i reckon next time she may need that injection / spay so i want to know when

Usually every 4-5 days but if you keep bucks nearby it can be more often.

i would think she has got stuck in season. A trip to the vets might be a good idea or a bit of time out on her own might calm her down and let the others in the cage re-sort the pecking order.

I must be wearing her out if she has been like this for 6 weeks, she could probably do with a break (and the others)
