The Thirteenth Legion

Quote:

Although named after the historical Legio XIII Gemina, the Earth Sphere Union's actual 'Thirteenth Legion' differs far from their historical counterparts both in numbers...and in honor. Once founded by Colonel Nadia Gearson as a Black Ops unit shortly after the war began in Australia, the Thirteenth Legion was formed seemingly only on one mind: Nadia's inherent sympathy for rejects from the actual Earth Federation Army, and a determination to salvage something out of what their previous commanders did not see in order to win the war. Under Nadia's command, the Thirteenth Legion gained some success in the Australian theater primarily as a Black Ops unit, known for attacking --- and pillaging --- Fandom supply depots and convoys with fast, brutal fighting methods.

After Nadia's death in CE99 during a vaguely documented battle in Torrington Base against Major Juuso Eljas of the Fandom, however, the Thirteenth Legion soon were transferred everywhere as needed, switching leadership as quickly as they were transferred and gaining notoriety every step of the way. Many of its new recruits were misfits and insubordinates unwilling to conform to the Federation's rigid, inflexible (and often corrupt) chain of command, infamously known to be at the 'bottom rung' of the mainstream army as no other officer would dare receive them into their tour of duty; As this list grew, so did the Thirteenth's numbers, growing from a Black Ops squadron to a full-sized platoon quipped to be an effective 'last resort' for pilots and officers on the verge of 'washing out'.

The Federation's disbanding a month ago would deal a major blow against the Thirteenth Legion, reducing their numbers by almost half as certain pilots, feeling nothing left to fight for, simply opted to desert or defect on the spot during the Legion's escape from Alaska; Many, however, chose to join the Earth Sphere Union along with Juan Santi's arrival at Aidoneus Island. Today, based around two Grey Phantom-class cruisers left over from the early days of the war, the Thirteenth Legion remained notorious within the ESU for being insubordinates and misfits. Although many standard forces within the ESU are wary at best of the Thirteenth Legion, however, almost all of the Thirteenth are not only aware of their reputation, but are also conscious about having nothing to lose but their usefulness; This, combined subsequently with the Thirteenth Legion's deadly, almost desperate hard-hitting and brutal tactics, make the Thirteenth Legion a force to be reckoned with for those who actually make use of them. The wiser officers usually take note of this.

Although attrition would whittle down Legio XIII's numbers to less than half of their already-depleted contingent, with the ESU in full force during the subsequent counterattack, Legio XIII were almost completely neglected and their numbers were not replenished for much of the Earthbound campaign; It would only be shortly after the Liberation of Geneva that Legio XIII finally received fresh reinforcements --- more misfits and washouts to throw onto one single pile away from the official final push. But among these new washouts was also a new --- and very infamous in the future --- Commander, one that finally seemed to understand Legio XIII's desire to simply kill Martians wherever they went...

For approval: A new Commander (at last) and a new recruit.

Rowan Darlingfield

Appearance

As the star pupil of the "Operation Lionheart" Conditioning Project, Rowan Darlingfield's uncanny daring, utter lack of fear, and unshakable hatred of Martians after his family is murdered by Fandom troops in CE99, all contributed to a relatively quick rise in rank and career from that of a lowly Regina Squad Leader until he became Divisional Commander of Europe's Brandenburg Region; It was also, however, during that tenure that Rowan would come to be suspected of committing numerous war crimes and massacres, in particular after the Liberation of Berlin --- which would earn him the moniker of the Butcher of Berlin after the end of the war. Although no substantial evidence would be found (by the ESU, anyway), Rowan was nonetheless ordered to relinquish his command in the wake of such allegations, and was then transferred to Legio XIII to keep him 'out of the way' for the final push towards Arti-Gibraltar.

However, Rowan's hatred and will to make Martians suffer was not to be denied, and he would borrow, bargain, call in favors, and even steal in order to reorganize whatever was left of Legio XIII into a surprisingly coherent Black Ops unit. This hatred would also lead Rowan to become attracted to a very enticing offer from a surprising source within the Fandom's Gibraltar Base...

Group(s): Earth Sphere Union
Rank: Lieutenant Colonel
Mobile Weapon(s): Carry Base

Nikki Arbalest

Appearance

Infamously nicknamed "Crazy Stacy" among the ESU ranks, the "Lionheart Project" would likewise turn Nikki from a normal, perky civilian girl to an utterly fearless and insanely devoted and daring soldier in short order, affording her a reckless, full-offensive piloting style in the cockpit; Among other things, however, Nikki also seemed to be immensely lucky, often finding herself a survivor of multiple debacles such as the little known Grandeur Station Raid. After the latter, in fact, Nikki would drift from unit to unit on Earth, garnering that feared and unreliable reputation as "Crazy Stacy" and earning the suspicion and wariness of whoever she worked with, until she was finally transferred to Legio XIII prior to the ESU push in Europe to keep her "out of the way" as well.

Nikki is also well-known for having an uncanny aptitude for three-dimensional combat, though it is not known from where aside from her previous aptitude for video games.
