INTERVIEW
This month, Alice (alice in wonderland.) interviewed a new member Mocha (MOCHA CAPPUCHINO).

Hey Mocha! Thank you so much for agreeing to do this interview with me on such short notice - we really appreciate it! So far, we have seen you dabbling around the site in the Graphics section, and you even joined Camp K-Drama during our Summer Camp event this year! You already have a gallery posted as well, but there is still so much we do not know about you! For our first question, I would like to ask, what prompted you to join Shadowplay?

I always loved the feel of Shadowplay- even though I hadn't joined until recently. I've been eyeing the site for quite a while- mainly because it's really dedicated to helping its members grow and hone their skills- which is something I greatly admire. There is such a friendly environment and the staff genuinely care about their members- everyone is always welcoming in the cbox or in the Discord channel, and it's just a great environment.

Aw, what a sweet thing to say! We love having you here and we all work hard to ensure that Shadowplay is a community for everyone - a place where people can grow and be a part of a family that supports them. Now, we know that you are making graphics, but there is still so much we can learn about you as a person! What are your hobbies outside of the roleplaying and graphic design world?

Well aside from being a mother and chasing around a one year old all day, I also enjoy writing- I have a few novel ideas in the works at the moment, I just need to get the time to sit down so I can properly execute them. Otherwise, I love exercising- jogging, weight lifting and rock climbing. I'm also a huge music buff, so I enjoy going to concerts when I can and you can almost always find me with a pair of earbuds in my ears.

Oh wow! I hope that we are able to see some of your writing on the site soon - we love our writers here and we are sure that you must have some beautiful work. And you're a mom! Those of us without children can only imagine the chaos of chasing around the little ones, but you love them anyways, right? What kind of writing do you do? Are there any genres or particular pieces of inspiration that help you when writing? And what are some of these ideas for novels?

Mmm normally my preferred writing genre is specifically science fiction or fantasy with romance themes, or tragedies. Otherwise I do dabble in horror writing a little as well. I grew up being drawn to the works of Stephen King, Edgar Allan Poe, many writers in the horror/thriller genre- or what most people consider horror. I also gained inspiration from JK Rowling- not only from her works but from her life's story as well. As for my novel ideas, they're mainly in just bits and pieces right now- just small tidbits of plot lines that don't really have a concrete story yet. Like, one idea I have is revolves around a futuristic dystopian universe with a governing hierarchy- something similar to the Divergent series; but with a different faction system. I also have a couple other ideas that revolve around a medieval kingdom setting and it deals with magic and familiars as a main theme throughout the novel.

Sounds like you have a diverse range when it comes to your writing! You look up to some great writers and I can only hope that you share some of your work with us. As for your novel ideas, those sound great! Both of them could be really interesting stories, and coming up with an idea is the first step to working on a longer novelization piece. So, let's backtrack for a second to your child. Tell us a little about him! Do you have any particular funny stories involving the little one?

Oh loads. That's one of the best thing about having children- all the fun stories you accumulate throughout the years. There are times where my child has learned how to take his diaper off- and his clothes depending on what he's dressed in; then he decides to streak around the house. At one point he pulled my cat into the tub with him when he was throwing a fit from getting a bath- he hates baths, with a passion. My favorite thus far is he threw a fit at one point because he was tired and needed a nap, and threw a soda can at his dad to the point that it gave him a black eye for two days.

HA! This little boy sounds like a hoot! Sounds like you have some awesome stories to tell, and I am sure you will be able to embarrass the wee one once he is older with some of these memories! Thank you for sharing these tales with us. Let's move on to a different topic and discuss your history of role-playing! What kind of sites do you enjoy role-playing on and do you currently role-play on anything as of right now?

Currently I do have a post-game, au Dragon Age roleplay site- which has been a brain baby of mine since I first completed the games a while back. Otherwise, I mainly dabble in Harry Potter roleplays outside of my own site- mainly Marauders or Trio era roleplaying when it comes to Harry Potter sites. But, I've seen so many different au settings for Marauders from medieval times to present day, so even though I many stick to a small number of genres, I still get to have different experiences because of the multiple au's there are for the genre.

Sounds awesome! We might have to check out this site of yours to see what you are all about! Alright, our interview is now coming to a close, so I have one final question for you - tell us about your favorite song and why? How did it connect to you on an emotional level?

Oh goodness there's too many of those. Um... I would have to say my favorite song of all time would be Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked. I greatly identify with the character Elphaba because I was such a reserved child and I didn't really break out of my shell and truly find out who I was as a person, and what I was capable of until I entered adulthood.

That is so inspiring! Thank you so much for answering all of our questions - we are all excited to have learned more about you, and we want the members to be able to meet new people on the site as well! We cannot wait to see you around the site and once again, thank you for agreeing to be interviewed for our newsletter this month!

Well thanks for asking me to do the interview. It was so much fun! <3

INTERVIEW
This month, Jennifer (briar-rose) interviewed the lovely Evvy (dajalie)!

First of all, thank you SO much for letting me interview you this month, Evvy! HUGE congratulations are in order for your multiple awards in June; you were given promotions in both graphics AND writing, was granted Member OTM, earned your double platinum writing badge and your graphics gallery was featured. Whew, busy girl! Very well-deserved I must say. It would be great to get to know you a bit better after seeing your cheerful, encouraging presence around the site. That leads me to my first question -- what are your hobbies and interests outside of SP?

Aah, thank you so much for your kind words! Outside of SP, I really love to play volleyball and soccer (football) as well as some basketball. However, the two sports mentioned before are my absolute passions (I'm an outside hitter and a center mid respectively). I also love gaming! My favorite at the moment has to be League of Legends or Town of Salem, although that only goes for online-type games. When you're with friends or face to face, everything is a thousand times more fun so I honestly love anything I play with people I am well acquainted with. I also study languages, such as English and Latin (as my natives are Welsh and German) and love to experiment with writing in different tongues. Also, I am an avid animal-lover and baker; snickerdoodle cookies give me life and so does my super adorable (she's the cutest puppy in the entire universe) black lab <33.

Wow, so you're super-busy outside of SP too! I wish I was better at sports - I suck, aha. Also snickerdoodle cookies are YUM. You talk about your love of language studying and experimenting with writing -- which type/s of writing do you particularly like? Are there any topics that really get your creativity flowing?

That's really an excellent question! I originally became active in the writing galleries on SP because I had a lot of conversations with a certain friend, who managed to inspire me to do nonfiction. That category still happens to be one of my favorites to write today, although I struggle with projecting myself into my writing. (I've been told it seems more like a story or a greyed out main character, which can stem from trying to distance myself from the POV). So nonfiction-- I love that. Aside from it, though, poetry also happens to be a love of mine; free verse and enjambment basically are my absolute favorite parts of writing verse. I honestly love all types of writing; as far as reading pieces goes, I enjoy fanfiction and creative fiction very much! (Though I struggle to write such). I'll write about just anything that tickles my fancy, though my family and any tidbits from history/mythology/tales often will comprise the majority of any prompts I discover personally and choose to write from.

I can relate there -- NF can be a tough one to get right! I agree that free verse is an excellent creative outlet to express yourself. I think enjambment is an awesome poetic device to have in your tool-kit to manipulate rhythm. When incorporated into free verse they complement each other perfectly as they both rebel against some of the more traditional conventions of poetry. You mentioned that you became active here after some inspiration from a friend. What were your first impressions of the site? How has that changed during the time you have been here?

I first came upon SP through a link in a friend's signature, as credit for her roleplay character's avatar/sig set. At that point in time, I sort of just made an account and maybe an intro thread but barely got involved. The site came off as amazingly cool; hopefully that doesn't sound super dorky of me to say haha. I remember someone had a skeleton avatar/sig and they were legend level, and the red was just so awesome. I browsed the site and marveled at peoples' signatures, but couldn't find my way to the tutorials or galleries. I think my overall impression was basically just that; impressed, and in awe. Now I'm still in awe but mostly of the people here and all the effort I realize they've put into improvement and becoming so amazing . And I'm not intimidated anymore, cause I realize how funny and welcoming the community is.

I agree! It's such a friendly, warm community and it's lovely how we get to celebrate each other's achievements. :) The challenges are a really popular part of SP -- which challenges do you like to enter?

When I could, I would enter a lot of the Promising/Blooming challenges! I really liked how they would help improve by encouraging versatility (i.e. stock only blends, limited textures, simple colourizations without needing to resize). For graphics I kind of have a variety; since I often look to challenges for inspiration, I just end up entering whatever type of graphic I'm trying to create at the time. At least 90% of any coding I attempt comes from coding challenges, as well. For writing, it's a bit different; I probably only enter poetry and (some) nonfiction challenges. For all categories, I love the ones where you post in and receive ____ from the moderator, even though there usually ends up being a lot of people and it's not always easy to come up with your entry.

Yes, definitely -- the challenges are a great way to practice and improve your skills. How do you feel you've improved or grown since you started? How has SP helped you to do this?

When I first started making graphics, I thought I was really good for a new person. I don't know why exactly; probably because I just had an inflated opinion of myself haha. That might still be true, but now that I understand better how they work and how composition is kind of formed, I realize just how much more there is to learn. SP has shown me what is possible in the way of amazing text incorporation, model placement, new types of nonfiction writing, and the idea of things actually moving in codes instead of just being a rectangle post template. SP is amazing because even though everyone offers encouragement and things that you've done well (or better than other concepts so far) they're ready to help you out with working on more stuff. I love the comments that everybody is ready to leave for fellow members in the games and galleries! Honestly, just spending time here can improve somebody's confidence, allow them access to more resources, and open their eyes to critiques: all of which improve skills. It all improved mine, I hope, or at least I definitely feel that way.

I think it really has, your work is amazing! Before we draw the interview to a close -- do you have any parting advice to new members who are struggling to build their confidence up or find inspiration for their art?

I would just say a couple things that really helped me to get started. First, download a ton of resources (credit the sources too!) and just marvel at all of the prettiness. That's what you're going to use to make all of your amazing graphics! You can get a lot of textures, stocks, and inspiration for comps/color schemes from deviantart and weheartit (those are the two I spend the majority of my time browsing through). Also, don't be afraid to peek into the critique section. People are more than willing to offer advice, and pre-promo critiques are one of the best things ever when it comes to improving, in my opinion. Inspiration can come from listening to music but it can also come from codes, writing, and graphics-- basically, you can base a poem off of a certain blend or a code off of a set of song lyrics. Draw inspiration from other peoples' graphics too (although be sure you recognize that). What exactly makes you marvel at the legends' graphics? Is it the contrast? Maybe add a lighting texture-- lighting textures are honestly my favorite thing in the ENTIRE UNIVERSE. Browsing the tutorials can be helpful too, for example if you're trying to make your first colorization or improve your icon skills. Above all, just know that this entire community is so supportive that no matter what result comes from any attempt at graphic making, writing, or coding, life will be great. Honestly, it's just such a happy thing =D also, don't be afraid to comment on other peoples' galleries because it really can help you realize what you might be able to add to your graphics, by analyzing other peoples' <3 Good luck and always have fun!

Ahh what lovely advice to end such an interesting, informative interview! Thank-you for taking the time to answer my questions Evvy, you're a star. ✩

You're so sweet Jennifer, honestly. ❤ Beautiful questions and I was really honored by your request to interview me. I loved the questions you came up with, and the entire experience was really fun and got me to think about some things I wouldn't normally consider.

INTERVIEW WITH THUNDERSTRUCK
This month, Bella (.sirens) interviewed the lovely Nicole (thunderstruck), an amazing coder on our site and new member of our staff!

Thanks so much for allowing me to interview you this month, Nicole! Let's maybe start out with some basics: tell us a bit about yourself and what brought you to Shadowplay?

Thank you for asking to interview me, Bella! To tell you a bit about myself, I'm 22 and Canadian, and am currently in school studying computer science and business. I was involved in moderating resource sites back in 2010-2012 and at some point made the leap onto Shadowplay, then under the alias Jae (bam it's jae?!). I eventually left all of the rp world behind me for a hiatus that lasted until around 2014. When I returned I reconnected with Tany, who I had known, and eventually met Vic, who I had heard of. My friendship with them had me returning to Shadowplay on a regular basis and I remembered quickly what I'd liked so much about it. Shadowplay has a really wonderful community that's active and supportive.

Well, Shadowplay is definitely a great place to make connections and friends! So you've been on Shadowplay over a lot of years to see a lot of changes, in how the site operates and such, as well as various creative trends. What would you say makes Shadowplay a great place for coders, and how may that have changed over the years that you've been on here?

I think that the really important things that Shadowplay has to offer stem from the wonderful community I mentioned. Shadowplay has many extremely talented artists and many very kind, very helpful members. The insight that people have to offer in terms of design structure and elements (fonts, colours, etc) is all extremely valuable and is something that for myself especially has been more helpful than I can really say. Those kinds of aesthetic choices don't come easily to me and contributions from people who have experience with them, either in the form of coding or graphics, have been so appreciated. I also feel like Shadowplay enables people to develop their own styles by offering critiques without pushing people towards what's popular and I enjoy that aspect of the site as well. I didn't code at all before 2014 (or at least not seriously or well!) And so I can't speak very much to how the coding section may have changed over the years, but I know that I have always been wowed by the friendliness and helpfulness of the Shadowplay community in general. C:

I agree, SP is definitely an amazing place to grow as an artist and meet plenty of amazing people. I'm sure you have seen some changes in how coding operates here on Shadowplay, like our new feature of dohtml being enabled in signatures, for example! What do you think of this feature being enabled after Shadowplay being open for nearly a decade??

I'm thrilled about it! Coding on jcink and invisionfree has developed a lot over the last several years and there's a lot of really creative and interesting things you can do with dohtml signatures. I'm excited to see people using them already -- I know I put mine up as soon as I found out they were enabled!

I'm no coding wiz by any means, but I definitely thought it was exciting as well to hear that news! I started roleplaying on invisionfree almost a decade ago, and it's really amusing almost thinking back to how coding trends have evolved over the years, for everything from signatures to skins to thread templates. What would you say is your favorite thing to code, and how have the trends for it changed since you started coding?

In terms of templates, my favourite thing to code (or at least what I code most often) is probably thread templates. I make a new one for nearly every new thread I'm in. Overall, though, my interest is largely in writing scripts in the last year or two- things like my cbox toggle generator and my code box. I love the challenge these kinds of projects pose.

It's actually great timing for this question because just last week I was looking at some of my old coding from 2011 and it's so terrible! Back at that time a lot of skinning and templates in general were very graphics-oriented, where graphics were the focus and were used to achieve designs. Our hovers were basic (if we had any at all) and we seemed to be into a very crowded look. I'm not sure anybody really fully understood padding or negative space -- I know I definitely didn't -- and we were worse off for it! By the time I had left and returned from my hiatus in 2014 coding was holding its own in design and no longer just propping up graphics elements. We were also moving towards a more minimalistic look slowly and in the last three years that has really taken off. I really appreciate the minimalistic style and just hope now we can maybe begin to use bigger font sizes or higher line height for body text. I don't like reading paragraphs with tiny squished letters!

I can totally picture what you're talking about. I primarily interacted with coding for roleplaying purposes, but I can remember how thread templates even just transformed over the years. Even with your hiatus from the coding world, I personally think you've got a lot to be proud of considering you're the only famous coder that I believe we have on SP, and I think that's quite an achievement. We'll finish this off with one last (admittedly cliche and possibly nostalgic) question: if you could give advice for new coders or even yourself when you started out on coding, what would you say?

Thank you!! Im very proud of myself. Ive learned a lot in the time since I decided to invest myself seriously in coding and Ive come a long way. I know something that made it easier for myself in learning was having goals for a long time when I approached coding, Id do it with a specific skill that I wanted to learn such as opacity hovers, or sliding hovers, or tabs, obviously progressing as I became comfortable with the techniques Id learned earlier. I think that would make my first piece of advice to always push yourself to learn new things and to not just make it work but to understand what every line of your code is actually doing for you. And my second piece of advice ties into this: the roleplaying community is not always the best place to learn new skills or details about coding, and so Id encourage anyone who really wants to improve their coding to seek out information from the outside world. Theres lots of good websites (css-tricks, stackoverflow, and others) that can help you improve your skills in a way that, in my opinion, is more well-rounded than coding geared specifically towards roleplaying. Lastly, dont be afraid to ask for help!! I can nearly guarantee that any issue youve had someone else has had before, and in the rare case where thats not true, someone will be ready to take on the challenge. Happy coding! <3

Definitely great advice. Thanks so much for your time, Nicole; I really enjoyed interviewing you <3

INTERVIEW

This Month, Katlynn(arrietty.) has interviewed our newest writing moderator Alice (alice in wonderland)!

Thank you so much for agreeing to this interview! For starters, congratulations, again, on joining the writing staff here at SP! I know you're a super talented writer, so I'm not surprised to find you here on staff at all! I am curious, though, what was your reaction to finding out you would be joining the team?

Thank you so much! It means so much to me to be a part of the Shadowplay staff. When I found out, I was super excited! I had previously applied for staff around three or four times, but I never gave up, and I kept applying every time the staff search went up. I was very surprised and very happy because Shadowplay is such an awesome community. Prior to being accepted to staff, I worked on my activity here for months, because I wanted to be a part of the community here and I am so glad I did!

Ahhh, well it definitely paid off! :) So, since you're part of the writing community here, what would you say is your favorite thing to write about? Where do you draw your inspiration from?

Hmm, that is a hard question. When I was younger, I drew a lot of my inspiration from things that were going on in my life, which is why a good portion of my poetry has darker themes to it. A lot of my work has also drawn from various romantic relationships I have been involved in, including actual conversations that I included as parts of the stories. Now, I would say that I draw inspiration from other outlets, such as writing prompts, or sometimes when I get an idea, I just roll with it.

I can totally identify with that! 99% of my ideas just pop into my head randomly too. I'm happy to hear I'm not alone, haha. So, since we know what you like to do around the site, let's get to know the RL you--the one without internet, that is! :P When you're not writing or spending time on SP or CC, how do you usually pass the time?

This is going to be super boring, cause without CC and SP, I literally do almost nothing! I work full time, so when I am not here, I'm usually at work. I work at a hotel and I do the night audit (overnight shift) two-four times a week, but even when I am there I am on CC and SP! When I am off the internet, I am either doing classwork (as I do go to college full time as well), reading (I love to read books!), playing video games, or watching movies (sometimes I can watch up to 6 a day depending how much time I have). I do all sorts of things that sometimes I wonder how I manage to do it all!

Oh my goodness, that was literally the opposite of boring! I can't believe you can manage all of that and still churn out amazing pieces all the time! In writing AND graphics no less! I can barely remember to feed myself hahaha. I'm so impressed and I may have to hit you up for some time management advice soon!

So, I have only have one more question for you, but it's a hard one. :)

If you were to design a new crayon for the Crayola crayon box (the big 164-piece one!) based on your personality, what color would you be and why?

I think it's a miracle that I get so much done!

Hmm..if I had to design a new crayon it would have to be a mixture of purple and blue, but a brighter version of the color, because I feel that I am a very laid back person who is mostly chilling out in my life, which would explain the blue, and purple because to me that represents my creative side and the spunkiness I have going on!

I can totally picture that color, and I definitely think it would be very fitting of your crayon form! (That is also such a good, well thought-out answer!)

Thank you so much for allowing me to interview you (and for putting up with me)! I feel like we've gone over a lot, but did you have any final parting words for everyone reading?

No problem! I feel so honored to have been chosen for the interview this time!
And yes I do! When it comes to promotions and applying for staff - never give up. You never know what someone might be looking for in terms of staff. Don't lose hope when it comes to promotions either. We are all impartial to our own work and we may not notice when we are improving. Take critiques and criticism and work them - they are only meant to help you improve, not discourage you! <3

INTERVIEW
This month, alyssa ren. helps us to get to know one of our new admins, saranghae.!

Hi Tany! Thank you so much for letting me interview you for the newsletter this month! We hadn't had a staff interview in a while so I figured why not you!

Aww thank you! You're too kind! (:
Let's get started shall we? (:

Yes we shall! Apologies in advance if I make no sense; I've never done the interview before. First off, you joined Shadowplay waaay back in 2010. How much do you think you have improved since then, and how much has the community grown in general?

Personally with my graphics, I do think I've improved a lot since way then. When I joined in 2010 I really had no clue about stock use or ever really put much thought in my composition. Learning more about stock and composition in general have definitely made me improve a lot. Shadowplay helped me find my graphic style which I thank immensely to the critique team over the years and Eliza herself for those helpful promotion critiques. With coding it's a bit different... I didn't code as much back then too since the only experience I really had with coding was basic coding with php and a bit of ftp. I definitely have learn more tricks over the years with coding by seeing how trends evolved and making them work with my style. I think Shadowplay has helped me bloom as a coder as well.

The community has grown so much since then. When I joined, there was around 2,000 or so members on the forum and to see that there's almost 24,000 members now. WOW. It's definitely amazing. There's just so much variety when it comes to graphics now, it's so refreshing to see it with the new members. I do think the growth of the community has also to do with adding the coding and writing ranks as well. Originally, there wasn't such thing as coding ranks so it was awesome to see other members get the coding ranks from the start as well. But with the growth of the community has helped to develop the sections much more further, especially with writing and coding. It doesn't matter if you can't make graphics on Shadowplay especially knowing that there's an active community in both writing and coding as well. Especially if you can get ranked with either section as well.

That's what I love most about Shadowplay - there's something for just about everyone and it inspires people to keep on improving. Now not only are you an active member on the site in terms of creating but you are also on the admin team! When did you decide to join staff, and how's it been stepping up since the lovely and amazing Eliza stepped down? I imagine it's been a lot of work probably!

Definitely! I've always found that the most important part of the community itself and why I've been active here for the past 7 years. It's really enriching to see how the community has grown and improved. I joined staff originally in May 2010 and this year I'll be celebrating my 7th year anniversary on staff (I've taken two short breaks here and there due to real life issues or school) . I've been a member of nearly every team on staff so far (Graphic Resources, Coding(Before both teams were blended to the actual resource team now), Critique Team, Awards Team, Bank (Previously as head of section) (just missing challenges, writing, directory, and requests lol). I'll be honest, I've never actually imagined myself becoming head admin of the site, let alone having the admin position. It's been a tough time adjusting because I was trying to make sure everything has been getting done behind the scenes and making the administration changes lately as seamless as possible. Staff hiring was something completely new to me since the only time I've ever really done hiring for is for newer sites or even help other sites give opinions on applications. Having to make the decisions myself was interesting. I can't even explain all the thoughts that run through my head when I was hiring for all the new staff positions because almost all the sections on the site needed staff members. I never actually imagined all the work it took to run the site, and a site as big as Shadowplay. I've personally told this to Eliza and I definitely understood what it takes to run the site. It's been a lot of work to get everything back to normal now but it's definitely a bigger responsibility now more than ever.

I definitely give anybody credit who can run a website as big as Shadowplay! I do imagine, though, that it must have been hard deciding staff positions and adjusting, but you are doing a fantastic job so far. So outside of Shadowplay, what do you like to do in your free time?

It definitely was. I feel like most people who run a site would definitely understand my feelings on it and wanting the best for the site. Thank you, Alyssa, you're too kind.

Outside of Shadowplay I really like to go shopping, especially for makeup. I do try to stay up to date on new makeup items and wish I wasn't as broke to buy it all. LOL. Sometimes I scare myself with how much stuff I buy to treat myself. But that aside, I do hang around on reddit from time to time and stay on Pokemon, K-Pop, Beauty, and Skincare related subreddits. I like playing video games from time to time. I do like to read books, watch dramas, do send some book and drama recommendations my way! I listen to a lot of music. (A bit too much for my own good, I think I've scared a few with how crazy my music tastes really are)

I have the exact same problem with makeup. I want it all and I'm to broke to buy it xD Well, I think this is just about ending. Do you have anything else you would like to say to Shadowplay before we go?

I really want to give the community a big thank you for sticking with us with the recent administration changes and adjusting to everything. I'll definitely make sure that the Shadowplay spirit stays alive no matter what. I also want to remind everyone that everyone's style (no matter if it's writing, coding, or graphics) is special. Don't let anyone bring you down. Always be open to constructive critique as well because it'll definitely help you improve and become a better artist.

That's such an inspiring, kind note to end it on. Thank you again, Tany, for doing the interview!

Thank you so much for the opportunity! (:
