Name: Theodore Alexander Nunes-White Gender: Male (DFAB) Age: 17 Grade: 12th School: George Hunter High School Hobbies and Interests: Video games (especially MMOs and first person shooters), anime, playing the keyboard, audio production and remixing, vaporwave/city pop Appearance: Teddy has a short and stocky build, standing at 5’4” and weighs 149 lbs. He is fairly bottom-heavy, with a lot of the fat going to his stomach and thighs, alongside a noticeable double chin. Teddy’s mixed Caucasian and African-American heritage is evident in his tawny skin, with freckles smattered on his cheeks and nose. He has an oval-shaped face with a slightly jutting chin. Teddy has a rounded nose, full lips, and narrow brown eyes. His hair is a wiry dark brown, which he keeps in a short buzz cut. He has pierced ears, a left eyebrow piercing, and a septum piercing, and often wears silver jewelry. Teddy also wears a binder around school. Teddy has a habit of wearing baggy clothing, mostly to further conceal his physique. He likes wearing loose sweatshirts, flannel, and hoodies over t-shirts, often paired with dark-colored jeans. Teddy used to dress in exclusively dark-colored clothing, but has since begin to include brighter colored accessories in his wardrobe. A majority of his t-shirts are anime or video-game themed. On the day of the trip, Teddy was wearing a navy blue hoodie over a brown Nuka Cola t-shirt, paired with ripped grey jeans and black Keds. Biography: Teddy was born Alice Meredith Moretti in Newark, New Jersey, to Amanda Moretti, then a sophomore at Rutgers University. Knowing full well she lacked the financial stability to raise the child and was uncomfortable with the idea of getting an abortion, Amanda carried the child to full term, naming him after her two sisters. She put the baby up for adoption, and he was adopted by a gay couple, Raymond “Ray” White and Vincent “Vince” Nunes. Amanda expressed little desire to remain in contact with the family, deciding to refocus her efforts on her studies. Teddy has never expressed any interest in meeting his biological mother, being contented with the existing parental figures in his life. After the adoption, Teddy took both of his father’s surnames, and was raised Alice Nunes-White for most of his life. Ray was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and moved to New Jersey to attend Fairleigh Dickinson University on an athletic scholarship. During his junior year, he met Vince, a second-generation Cuban-American training as a mechanic at the Teterboro Airport. The two began dating, and moved in together after Ray completed his bachelor’s degree. They relocated to Newark so Ray could intern at local museums while studying for a master’s degree, which he completed in 1997. During this time, Vince worked at the Newark Liberty International Airport. Despite being unable to do so legally, the couple considered themselves married. During Ray’s later years in graduate school, the two began to consider starting a family. They decided to adopt a child once they’d become financially stable. When the time came in 2000, the two adopted Teddy. For the first year and a half of his life, Ray raised Teddy at home, while Vince continued supporting the family as an aircraft mechanic. Afterwards, Ray took up an assistant curator position at the Newark Museum, and Teddy was placed in a daycare center during his parents’ work hours. The two were doting fathers, and Teddy developed a close relationship with the both of them. However, he grew to like Ray more, as he had been the one to raise him at home while posing as his guardian in public, as the couple were hesitant to be open about their family life. Teddy had a difficult time befriending other children once he started school. His classmates often teased him for his weight and relative quietness. Teddy often lashed out in response, and there have been sporadic incidents of him fighting or hitting other students throughout his elementary school career. His parents’ advice was to simply ignore them, as they emphasized that all they wanted to do was get a rise out of him, and that their words shouldn’t get to him. Teddy would attempt to ignore the teasing, though it soon gave way to complete isolation, with Teddy preferring to spend time by himself instead of around his classmates. Throughout Teddy’s childhood, he experienced significant discomfort being referred to as a girl, or being treated in a feminine way. He would often gravitate towards more masculine presentations, disliking anything ‘girly’ and expressing a desire to cut his hair short. While his parents generally obliged with the latter two (benignly believing that this was merely a tomboyish attitude), Teddy was still uncomfortable with being a girl. Unsure what to do about these feelings, Teddy simply ignored them, though it simply contributed to more frustration and problems in his childhood. Over time, Ray and Vince grew unhappy with their living situation. They’d initially talked about moving to put Teddy in a different school in an effort to dispel the bullying, but that only brought up other issues they had living there. The couple had few people to turn to in New Jersey, as Ray’s family was scattered through the southeast and Vince’s family had cut him off entirely once they’d learned of his relationship. And while financially stable, the two grew tired of living in the city, and often discussed moving out to the suburbs. However, they struggled to find a home in proximity to job opportunities for the both of them. This changed when Ray learned of a job opportunity through his older sister, Angela “Angie” Harris. Angie was Ray’s only sibling, and became a confidante when he was in his teens. After moving to New Jersey to escape the conservative views of his parents and home state, Angie was the only one he kept in regular contact with. She had moved to Chattanooga with her family, and was working as a freelance journalist. She told her brother that the Hunter Museum of American Art was hiring a curator, and there was also work to be found for Vince at the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport. It took the couple several months to reach a decision. Overall, the opportunity was alluring; not only would they be able to raise their child in the suburbs while working in their two occupations, but they would also move closer to family, who could help care for Teddy while they worked. The main drawback was Tennessee’s deeply conservative attitude, the type that Ray had hoped to escape. In the end, figuring that another opportunity like this wouldn’t happen anytime soon, the family moved to Tennessee in 2009. The Nunes-White family moved into a suburban home in northeastern Chattanooga, a couple blocks from the Harrises, where they live to this day. From the age of nine onward, Teddy was left in the care of his aunt during the day, and spent a lot of time with Angie’s own children. As he grew up, he grew closer to the Harrises, considering them an extension of his immediate family, and thought of his cousins as his siblings. He is especially close with Kayla, who is in the same grade. Ray and Vince signed Teddy up for piano lessons shortly after their move, hoping to give him an outlet to express himself. While initially ambivalent, Teddy grew to enjoy these lessons, finding piano playing a soothing activity. After expressing interest in learning songs on his own, his parents got him an electronic keyboard for his eleventh birthday. He would attempt to learn popular songs of the time by ear, and later discovered he could search for music sheets online. However, he often found it cumbersome to bring the keyboard downstairs so he could play music on YouTube, and he begged his parents to buy him his own computer. His parents gave in at the start of sixth grade, when they bought him his first laptop. With unfettered access to the internet, Teddy began to branch out from pop music and find his own musical tastes. He developed an appreciation for pop punk, with bands like Panic! at the Disco, My Chemical Romance, and Fall Out Boy. He also became fond of comedy musicians, especially Neil Cicierega. When Teddy began to explore the internet beyond YouTube, he ended up on sites like Reddit and 4chan. On 4chan especially, he encountered the same vitriolic attitudes he’d seen from peers in elementary school, although greatly exacerbated. However, Teddy found that he was a lot more confident lashing out behind a screen. He began to maintain an abrasive demeanor and persona online, finding it a therapeutic way to take out his frustrations in an environment he was emotionally detached from. Through this, he also began to develop a thicker skin, often responding to insults with ones of his own. After a while, Teddy began to derive legitimate enjoyment from getting a rise out of other people, and was a self-professed ‘internet troll’ for a while. In addition, he adopted a misanthropist outlook on life, as his experiences with classmates in New Jersey and people on this site made him focus on the more negative sides of other people. It didn’t take long for his caustic attitudes to manifest in real life. Upon moving to Tennessee, Teddy had initially been withdrawn, looking to avoid bullying by not drawing any attention to himself. As middle school progressed, he began to hang out with classmates with a similar sense of humor. He ended up falling in within a nebulous group of predominantly male geeks that usually frequented the same sites Teddy did. He ended up growing close to these people, often taking pleasure in getting a rise out of others as a group. As most of these kids were also gamers, Teddy ended up getting into video games again. They mainly played PC first person shooters such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Team Fortress 2, and occasionally crashed games and roleplaying servers on Garry’s Mod. This group of friends also got Teddy into anime, by way of recommending popular staples like One Piece and Naruto. While they were never Teddy’s favorites, it turned him on to the medium as a whole, and he began to look for series that suited his own taste. Teddy became a fan of grittier anime with darker themes like Death Note, Paranoia Agent, and Another, which remain some of his all-time favorites. However, he also developed a soft spot for comedy anime like Gintama and Nichijou. At the beginning of seventh grade, Teddy discovered World of Warcraft after seeing the hype around the recently released Mists of Pandaria expansion pack. He was intrigued by the premise and aesthetics of the game, and figured that it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try. Teddy quickly fell in love with the game, relishing in exploring the vast world alongside other people, with a character of his own creation. He played the game almost religiously throughout the rest of middle school, and still plays it on a regular basis to this day. World of Warcraft gave him an appreciation for roleplaying games, especially ones that let you make custom characters. This gave him the impetus to jump into Skyrim and the Fallout series, which he also fell in love with. All his characters since then have been male and named after his Pandaren - Teddy - which has also evolved into a default username he uses online. Seventh grade also marked Teddy’s first forays into exploring gender expression online. Before this, he had never mentioned his assigned gender due to the rampant misogyny on the sites he regularly frequented. When asked about his name, he’d given out the gender-neutral pseudonym ‘Alex’ (later adopting the more masculine ‘Teddy’) and never corrected anyone who referred to him with he/him pronouns. At the time, Teddy reasoned that he was just protecting himself from harassment. While playing World of Warcraft with a male avatar, he began to purposely introduce himself as one, and realized that it had felt a lot more natural than what he’d been referred to in real life. This epiphany brought his previously repressed dysphoria to light, and it compelled Teddy to look into it. Through online research, he discovered the concept of being transgender, and was finally able to put a name to his feelings. After reading up on the testimonies of others and doing some self-reflection, he came to the conclusion that he was a trans man. This epiphany came during the summer between seventh and eighth grade, and Teddy was unsure of what to do with the information. While it came as a relief and put a lot of aspects of his life into perspective, he was scared about transitioning publicly. He was not only conscious about the conservative atmosphere of Tennessee, but also of his own family. While his parents were gay, Teddy knew that being accepting of other sexualities wasn’t mutual with being accepting of differing gender identity. Initially, he sought solidarity within online communities on sites like Reddit and Tumblr. When school started again, he made a discrete yet purposeful attempt at a more masculine presentation, such as cutting his hair short. Teddy first confided in his cousin Kayla at the beginning of eighth grade, who to his relief, gave her full support to him. She became his confidante during this time, a person for Teddy to vent his frustrations and anxieties to. After a couple of months of mental prepping and probing his parents for potential prejudice by casually bringing up trans issues in conversation, he decided to come out to his parents. It was a mixed success. Both of his fathers were shocked at first, though Vince did not hesitate to throw his support behind his son. Ray took a little longer to come around, though pressure eventually came from both Vince and Angie, who reminded Ray that he needed to give Teddy the support his own parents hadn’t. At the beginning of 2014, they had a series of appointments with a therapist, who diagnosed Teddy with gender dysphoria and recommended transitioning. It was agreed that Teddy would start hormone replacement therapy, along with legally changing his name. At his request, Teddy’s parents also allowed him to begin wearing a binder to school. Presenting publicly as male and having the support of his family behind him boosted Teddy’s confidence, and they believed that it was a good time to come out to his classmates. His first instinct was to come out to his gaming friends, who to his shock, responded with disgust and vitriol. While it hurt, Teddy decided to shake it off, reasoning that they had been rubbish friends to begin with. However, this experience also came with the sobering realization of the damaging nature of his attitude. This was the first time people had really gotten to him since elementary school, and he became painfully conscious of how his attitude had affected people in the past. Teddy resolved to try to break out of that toxic mindset, and make an effort to be nicer to the people around him. High school as a fresh start in Teddy’s life, both transition- and personality-wise. As many of his classmates would be meeting him for the first time, he took advantage of first impressions by introducing himself as male. In addition, Teddy hoped to start his social life anew by joining clubs and extracurriculars. While he tried out numerous clubs throughout his first year of high school, he eventually settled on joining club relevant to his interests, along with the Gay-Straight Alliance. Teddy’s social life improved dramatically when he decided to open up, meeting people with similar interests through anime and gaming clubs, along with other LGBT kids in the GSA. His resolution was difficult to keep to at first. He was able to tone back directly insulting others, though Teddy found it hard to tone back his sarcasm, or resist playfully ribbing on others. After a while, he just accepted that there were just some parts of him he couldn’t change, and that he could be a nicer person without rehauling his entire personality. In freshman year, Teddy tried his hand at audio mixing. He’d been a longtime fan of Neil Cicierega’s musical pursuits, although he lacked the confidence to try to create music of his own. Teddy became interested in musical mashups after Cicierega dropped two back-to-back mashup albums in 2014, and remixing was something Teddy felt he could do. His first songs were rudimentary mashups of songs he’d admired in his youth, and he found delight in experimenting with musical blends. His work quickly took a comedic twist, as he began to make more humorous songs that would incorporate memes and memetic songs like All Star. Teddy posts his mashups on his YouTube channel in order to share it with his friends, although he’s also garnered a small chunk of subscribers from it. As his personal music style evolved, Teddy began to seek out other musical styles and influences. Teddy eventually developed appreciation for vaporwave, and after looking into the music it sampled, 80s Japanese city pop. His experience with audio production spurred Teddy to join a band with his friends called Beyond Human, where he acts as both their keyboardist and mix engineer. He also adds background vocals when needed, although he isn’t a particularly good singer. The band’s musical style is much gloomier his personal work, though Teddy appreciates the opportunity to indulge in his gloomier proclivities and actively write original work. Presently, Teddy holds a comfortable spot in George Hunter’s social landscape. He’s carved out his own niche of kids who share his interests. He has a variety of friends from his clubs, with the closest being his cousin Kayla and his bandmates. While he is prone to sarcasm and playful ribbing, he is able to tone it down around people who aren’t receptive to it, or even eliminate it entirely. Teddy feels most himself when he’s doesn’t have to restrain himself, which he can only do around some of his friends. He is still somewhat quick to anger, though he actively works towards letting bygones be bygones, with bigotry being the only thing he doesn’t compromise on. He finds it somewhat difficult to interact with peers who went to middle school with him, who knew Teddy during his angrier pre-transition days. While middle school is a distant memory, he is generally afraid they’ll remember him for his more caustic attitude, or worse, things he’s said to them. It’s far too late to apologize for such incidents, though, so he’s generally hopes they’ve forgotten. While Teddy’s grades have improved since he was younger, he isn’t a stellar student. He generally skates by on Bs and Cs, doing what he needs just to maintain an adequate grade. Teddy is unsure of what to do with his future, since he lacks the interest and academic skill to pursue most fields. He has considered making a career out of his musical projects, though he is unsure if he can succeed with making musical mashups. Besides that, the future of Beyond Human is uncertain, as most of them are going off to college. His only concrete plan is to move out to the West Coast, to a more progressive environment than Tennessee. Teddy’s already been accepted to the University of California, Los Angeles, where he plans to attend with an undeclared major. Advantages: Teddy has a reasonable amount of friends, and can find some easy allies in his friends. When push comes to shove, he can stand up for himself and others, and maintain an aggressive attitude that will hopefully drive off adversaries. He does fairly well under pressure, and is slow to panic. Disadvantages: Teddy is out of shape and lacks any sort of physical aptitude. Although he’s made an effort to the contrary, he is still prone to sarcasm and irritability, which may become detrimental to any alliances he’d make. His efforts to better himself might prove to be a liability, as he may be less willing to turn on friends. Edited by Aloha, Mar 6 2018, 11:17 PM.

Do not be afraid, my child. I am PAIGE, caretaker of this CRITIQUE. Teddy is temporarily DENIED pending a couple small changes. "Through online research, he discovered the concept of being transgendered, and was finally able to put a name to his feelings." Transgendered is not a word; "being transgender" is the phrasing you're looking for here. Teddy's two advantages are pretty similar. I'd like to see a third that pushes against something other than social qualities; some physical or mental advantage he might bring to the table. Post here when you've made these changes and I'll give him another look! |
