By popular demand, welcome to the Best Death Award contest voting for those last few who fell before V6's endgame! We start off with a reminder of the rules:

Quote:

Votes will remain hidden until the voting is done.

Votes are made anonymously, so you'll need to log out of your account and post as a guest.

You may not vote for yourself for either award.

Votes must come with reasoning, or they will not be counted.

As a reminder on points of courtesy: please be sure to read every death before voting, please vote for your genuine favorite rather than just voting for your friends, and please don't campaign for awards in the chat or otherwise try to influence the vote. Additionally, please do not use formatting which might make it unclear what your vote is, as this could lead to inaccurate results.

BEST DEATH AWARD:
Privyet for the death of Matthew Moradi
Laurels for the death of Alba Reyes
Deamon for the death of Kimiko Kao
Aura for the death of Alice Baker
Pippin for the death of Bryony Adams
Espi for the death of Blair Moore

Voting will run for five days, with the winner announced at some point after that.

So what if all we ever draw is a nude man, or the same nude man over and over in all sorts of provocative positions? Context, not content! Process, not subject! Don't be so gauche, Steve, it's beneath you."

Honorable Mentions: Everyone, dammit. This was just an awesome final ten and everyone here should be proud. The ones I'm not giving the vote for could have won any other month. This is how the end of the game should be: just the best of the best putting their absolute peak writing to the page and pulling off such memorable scenes.

But I had to choose, so this is what I decided:

Best Death Award: Of the choices, I decided on Deamon for the death of Kimiko Kao. I don't think we'll ever be able to discuss V6 without talking about Kimiko. She was such a unique villain, one with a premise that wasn't too gimmicky, one who showed actually regret in her story, and had enough humanity to her that she didn't fall into the pitfalls of cheap villainy. Her death post reminded me that she really was just a normal girl who fucked up hard when placed in the game, and she shows real sorrow and regret for her actions. I was actually pretty sad to see her die in such a state, and I think it's a testament to Deamon that he could make one of the biggest players of the game incredibly sympathetic at the end. With that, Kimiko gets my vote.

Thank you, V6, for making this such an interesting voting series. I hope to feel even more conflicted when V7 comes around.

What my username said. I think Alba is a good character, she had an excellent character arc with her death leading to the climax of it. I think this is Laurels' best character both Main and Mini and her whole arc was genuinely fun to read.

I think I like Blair's death the most.

THIS VOTE WAS DISQUALIFIED DUE TO LACK OF RATIONALE.

Gotta go to Alba Reyes for performing the ultimate in heroic sacrifices. Definitely not how I expected to see that scene play out, and actually got me to tear up reading it. Could I do that for someone? I don't think so. So, yeah, Alba Reyes get it for going out in style.

This is where I'd vote for Fiyori for BKA
IF THERE WAS A BKA

Voting Blair Moore for BDA. Geez there were a lot of really good deaths this sequence, everyone was contestable. A lot of unique moments, good writing, so on. Blair wins the extra point for an approach that to me was uniquely consistent, everyone managed a nice action scene but Pippin/Espi as a duo managed a specifically really good one that was tightly paced but still with nice description/detailing and hints of character defining thought. Not always a good idea, no, but it worked very well as an intimate and brutal one on one. Blair brings to the table her character in all it's logical odds and ends, she makes the scene and dies in a very irreverent manner. There's drama but it's understated, correctly in my opinion.

Voting Laurels with Alba Reyes for BDA. It was really great to watch Alba grow as a character and a person throughout V6, and I think that her death was an excellent way to go out both IC and OOC. It capitalized on Alba's major character moments wonderfully, taking out the first killer that she decided to chase, using the weapon that she received after winning Kaitlyn's game, and getting in some last words to the other people who shaped her life and her time on the island. V6 really has been Laurels's best work so far, and Alba deserves recognition for being a great example of that.

A very good batch of deaths this time, and I've got something nice to say about each of them. I'm sad I'm not more familiar with the characters' stories, but this is what it is and is just based on the very endings. Ultimately, I'm going to vote Matt Moradi for BDA. But I'm going to talk about each of them a bit.

Matt's death post is simple, and that takes real guts as the ending of a long story. I'm a huge fan of circularity, and to come full circle so smoothly is cool... especially to riff on someone else's post. It's also cool to see a character facing doubts and fears and the realization that they could be wrong, especially at such a late stage of the game, and especially in the complicated yet uncoerced manner Matt is.. Also speaking of things I'm a huge fan of: John Maus. Normally I do not dig music links, but you know what? This one gets the nod. I don't think I'm really properly explaining this, but this post got to me in a real way and somehow just brought home the scope and scale of the version and of SOTF as a whole in three tiny paragraphs.

Alba's finale is a good execution of the Gandalf Maneuver, but sold in a manner that allows for a consciousness of the impending action. Rather than despair, Alba finds strength in her predicament, turning the fact that she has no chance to survive into a weapon that allows her to change the entire dynamic of the confrontation. It's a strong conclusion, and one that leaves me, like Alba, feeling that in the end it all means something.

Kimiko's last moments are intriguing in that she finds herself remorseful but seemingly only once there's no chance left of success--her narrative keys in on the hypocrisy involved in hoping for forgiveness only as a last resort, and that desperate fear and bargaining seems a key element of Kimiko's personality.

Normally I'm not a huge fan of the use of space in posts, but Alice's death is as good a case for it as I've ever seen. The entire sequence takes place very, very quickly, but to Alice each moment stretches that little bit longer than the last. And that's how the space works, too--it's not there to represent a ton of time, but rather a teeny tiny sliver... just enough for a little moment of false hope.

All of the deaths I've discussed thus far have carried a certain gentleness or circumspect nature to them, but I think Bryony's earns that conceit most closely, because Bryony is the one who doesn't think (or doesn't let herself think) that she's actually dying. Horrifically wounded, trailing blood, she's sure until the last that she'll get back and keep it all together just as soon as she's rested, and that's a nice bit of dramatic irony. Even without knowing the rolls, it was clear that her appraisal of the situation didn't sit comfortably with reality, and that's an awesome line to walk as a writer.

And then there's Blair, who doesn't beat around the bush one bit. Hers is the most brutal death post of the bunch, and that hurts to read. It's also really gutsy, in a different way from playing with formatting or risking sentimentality. At the end of this long journey, with all that's come before and all that's yet to come, Espi looks the inevitable conclusion straight in the eye and doesn't flinch. It's cool and it's brave and it's exactly what I like to see. This made my choice really hard (been sitting here vacillating for over an hour now, based on the clock in the bottom right), and is super deserving of praise and respect.
