bka: isabel for killing astrid. it was brutal. it just was brutal. the most brutal death of this day. she probably will get a weapon from the terrorists for it i suppose.

bda: nancy. she is a quoteable character who died in an epic death scene that was executed excellently by both handlers. poor nancy not being able to kill kimiko uwu.

Best Kill: Isabel Ramirez for killing Astrid Tate. The whole scene was nice from both ends, and I particularly liked Isabel's consternation at realizing that she had dealt a fatal injury to one of the few people she would rather not kill. I also like the idea of her finally getting the BKA she's been gunning for as reward for the one kill she didn't intend.

Best Death: Tie between Pippin for Astrid Tate and KamiKaze for Junko Kurosawa. I can't choose between these two, they were both just very fitting for the characters in question. Astrid's death had just the right measures of irony and defiance from her, and Junko saw the conclusion of her impulsiveness and inability to deal with others in the circumstances of the island. Both were very enjoyable reads.

The BDA vote in this post was disqualified for picking multiple contestants.

BEST KILL

Jeremy Fraiser killing Junko. Death was emotionally resident, the fight between Jeremy and Junko was raw, it made both parties look real good. First kill that stuck with me.

I expect to see great things from you Jeremy.

BEST DEATH

It's Nancy Kyle by a landslide.

I could go on. I could explain how her death successfully closed her arc. I could also waste your time and detail how the conversation between Kumiko and Nancy held so much weight it could crush a man. I could also tell you that last minute twist made my heart jump skyhigh.

I won't, though.

Just take my word for it.

BKA

Alessio Rigano, for killing Maria Cucinotta

Alessio is a little bastard and I love it. He plays on Maria's goodwill, and repays it with him killing her. I think that's kinda neat. Furthermore, I feel like Alessio in particular is a great character to see how RC developed as a writer, and this kill is in particular a great scene for this comparison.

BDA

Nancy Kyle

不安心, or Unease, is hitting the right notes for me when it comes to pre-lethal encounters. Two foes known for the danger they are exchange a form of "pleasantries" before suddenly tension rises up and death occurs. I just love it! To add, Nancy's attempt to take Kimiko with her, and the short-lived but poignant realization that she failed at that is just vibing well with me.

CondorTalon, douze points

Best Kill Award: My vote for this month's BKA goes to Scout Pfeiffer for the death of Alvaro Vacanti. I sure didn't see this coming. I normally don't like when handlers write two of their characters in one scene, but I think this worked to add to the surprise of Scout killing Alvaro. I really liked the surprise, and I think it's a harsh end for Alvaro's story. It's also a good next-step for Scout, as I can imagine this doing a lot to affect her story. It was a nice surprise, and I think it was a good event for both stories, so it gets my vote.

Best Death Award: My vote for the BDA goes to Pippin for the death of Astrid Tate. I really liked Astrid, and her death as a harsh as the Elle Driver scene in Kill Bill Vol. 2. Being blinded is a really harsh thing to happen to someone in a situation like this, and it made things a lot more visceral and creepy for Astrid. Her post has a lot of sensory details to represent her fractured state, and it made me feel blind and slightly nauseated reading it. It's a brutal end for a character I really liked, and so it's the only choice for me this month.

BKA: Jeremy Frasier, friends. A man who's been staying as moral as he can, finally forced to kill when someone he trusts turns on him in a crazy rage. It's an oldie, but a goodie, and Yugi handles the turmoil and the physical and emotional pain deftly. Honorable mention to poor Coleen Reagan.

BDA: I've been flip-flopping on this for like a half an hour, and I think I've ultimately got to go with Alvaro. I wasn't 100% content with any of the deaths in this cycle, as I feel like there were a few too many shocking swerves that didn't really fit with the character arcs. Junko is my runner-up: Junko gets violent in a way that makes a lot of sense, and the scene plays out well, but I just don't buy her weird post-death giddiness. Ultimately, Alvaro's confusion, pain, and inability to make sense of the island even as he violently lashes out at it are what do him in. It's the only one of the deaths on display that I think is at truly fitting conclusion to a character arc. Honorable mention to Nancy Kyle (Deamon and Condor wrote a great scene, I just couldn't believe that paranoid psycho Nancy would ever trust Kimiko that far).

Isabel killing Astrid for BKA and Arthur Bernstein's death for BDA.

Tough crowd these rolls. Gonna be for all of them, isn't it? Isabel's kill was the best of her career and most character establishing. Awesome to get a lot of insight into her character without compromising any bit of the writing style that makes her distinctly who she is. Well paced from the stalking bit to the cold execution. Arthur's death was very well paced within a single post. At first I wasn't so sure I liked that but I think Crossbow manages perfectly. Hits all the timing cues very well. The last four lines are gorgeous. Poor Coleen.

BKA: Jeremy Fraiser
Jeremy is someone that I felt Yugi had been doing a good job with, but I wasn't sure exactly what was going on with him. In this thread we more or less get his mission statement and it was one that I felt was touching, realistic and keeping with his character. I liked the emotion on his end from encountering a friend and that quickly going sideways and the atmosphere of the kill was terrific. The writing was great and his reactions and descriptions had an organic feel to them (thinking about never having a real injury, for example). I adore this kill and it made me adore Jeremy even more.

BDA: Nancy Kyle
I hadn't been following Nancy that closely, but again the motivations put this one over the top for me. I don't think we've seen a character kill quite for the reasons that she did and having her think about how she missed her mark just as she dies was really fun. Good work.

My vote for BKA goes to Kimiko, for killing Nancy. The thread itself is super solid, and also serves as an intriguing launch point for Kimiko to move onwards; she's gone from killing in self-defence and retaliation, to planning on using the now stolen gun to further her kill count, and this 'torch-passing' really intrigues me, making this death a very important one.

For the BDA, my vote goes to Junko's death, by Kami. Writing a character dying happy on SOTF is a tricky thing to pull off right, but in this case, I think it was the perfect choice for Junko to go out. It works because she's still not happy with dying, she still wants to live; hell, the reason she dies is because she's furious at thinking someone else has given up. But if she has to go out, then what better way in an adrenaline fuelled no holds barred beatdown?

BKA: Oh, Jeremy Frasier, where have you been all my life? I feel so, so bad for having you fly under my radar. Your kill over Junko... Junko acted a little erratically at the end there, but I can always appreciate having to make a kill when somebody's going all Bad Girl on you. You poor old sod you, you made my feels flow, and that's why I have to give this one to you.

BDA: I have to give it to Arthur Bernstein. SotF is all about painting those delicious misfortunes and if you want a death just dripping in misfortune, this is the one you have to look at. There's such a sweetness there, between an accidental victim and his unwitting killer, when the both of them were just trying their best to accomplish something entirely different. Alessio escapes karma on this one, for now.
