((Bart Cappotelli continued from Bart's Nightmare))

Sitting in the middle of a field in the dead of night turned out to not be the most comforting way to pass the time. With every passing minute, Bart felt more nervous about his surroundings. He was completely wide open, vulnerable to attack from any direction. He needed safety, but there was no guarantee that he would be able to find it. As a compromise, he set out in search of the next best thing: shelter.

He wandered around aimlessly, hoping to find someplace to hide out until morning, or at least until he could hear the next announcement. Not knowing what had happened to Kizi or Clarice was bothering him immensely. He was pretty sure that the library was gone, or at least ruined beyond repair. With no firefighters on the island, he didn't see how the blaze could have been tamed before it reached that point.

Poking around with his flashlight, he came across the warehouse that he and his group had tried to rest in a couple of days ago. Deciding that this was as good a place as any to stay for a few hours, he crept up to the door and slowly made his way inside. Everything looked pretty similar to the way it was the first time he showed up.

... Well, aside from the corpse. He didn't know if it had been there during his first trip, but this sure was his first time seeing it. He made a noise of squealing discomfort as he tried to slowly move away from the body. This unfortunately led to him backing into a shelf, sending a box of soap falling to the ground with a thud.

Bart froze in shock, flashlight still shining straight ahead. He sincerely hoped that no one had heard that little mishap.

Bart felt his body tense up as he heard someone call out to him from deeper in the warehouse. They didn't sound too friendly, and the things they were saying definitely weren't friendly. He had a very strong urge to turn tail and run right there, fleeing in the hope of finding more pleasant company elsewhere. But he also figured that if he tried to run now, it might just make Jerry and his friends angrier, and they might even be willing to chase him down if that was the case. If it did come to that, he dreaded to think what the consequences may be.

Bart put his hands up, making sure to keep his flashlight shining a beam in front of him, and slowly sidestepped in the direction of the voices. He didn't want to look threatening in any way. "I-It's Bart. Bart Cappotelli." He called back, hoping that the non-aggressive manner of his introduction would soothe some nerves.

He continued to slowly make his way over, watching what the beam if his light revealed along the way. Once he passed by a couple of shelves, he saw two boys over near the further end of the warehouse, wielding flashlights of their own. He couldn't get a great look at them because of their distance and the darkness of the area, but they didn't look too happy at the moment.

Bart silently grimaced in fear.

The other boys may not have been aggressive, but that didn't do a whole lot for Bart's nerves. Firstly because they both stated that they expected him to be dead by this point, although he couldn't really disagree with that sentiment himself. Secondly because, well... they were armed, so he was pretty sure that things were going to go their way if push came to shove. The sudden appearance of another guy behind him didn't do any favors as well. Bart was spooked by the new arrival, jumping a bit before trying to hide his nerves once again.

"Hey, uh... I just got separated from my friends." He tried to explain. "There was a, uh..." He used his off-hand to point off in some random direction as he tried to force himself to remember his words. "... A fire."

He didn't dare move as he continued. He knew that the boys before him still definitely had the upper hand. "I was hoping that maybe I could, uh... find someone to help me out?" He could feel more sweat forming at his forehead, preparing to run down his face at a moment's notice.

Hopefully he was making a better impression than he thought he was, because he really didn't want to make these guys mad.

"Oh, uh... that's all right." Bart said, still keeping his hands above his head. "I was just hoping that maybe you'd, uh... seen Kizi or Clarice somewhere. We, uh..."

He caught himself before explaining any further. Should he spill the beans about the plan Kizi came up with? If he could get them to sign on with it, then it could go a long way towards creating the sort of community that they had been aiming for. But at the same time, he wasn't the talker that the other girls were, so he wasn't too sure about his ability to sell the idea to the other boys.

Well, there was going to be some risk involved regardless, so he might as well bite the bullet, hopefully not in a literal sense.

"We were hoping that we could, uh... make a big peaceful group." He tried to explain his motivations. "You know, so we could keep everyone alive until, uh... " Crap, how was he supposed to word this? He really should have had a speech prepared in case he ran into a situation like this.

"... You know, until someone came to save us, or something."

Okay, things definitely weren't going too well in terms of his attempts to sell the whole community idea. He was receiving some pretty harsh criticisms, and to be honest, he didn't have an answer for most of the things they were saying. He shrank back a bit once the one with the pipe started to act kind of aggressive. He wasn't in this for a fight. He was just trying to get some help.

"Uh, I mean, we wouldn't just be waiting around..." He tried to come up with some way to salvage his pitch. "I mean... if we got enough people together, then someone would probably, you know... come up with something..." His voice became smaller and smaller the longer he tried to argue his point. He eventually just trailed off and sighed in disappointment. He was pretty sure that we wasn't going to get anywhere with these guys. Damn his public speaking weakness.

'So, uh..." He mumbled. "You're sure you haven't seem them around then?"

"Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh..."

It was difficult for Bart to come up with words to describe what he had just seen. The angry guy started yelling about killing people, and the guy with the pipe started taunting him, acting like he was trying to start a fight. Then the angry guy yelled again and laid him out with one punch before continuing to yell at the newly-unconscious guy. The bearded guy started going through the first guy's stuff, then both remaining guys seemed to remember that he had been standing right there through that whole incident.

If Bart hadn't felt nervous about sticking around before, he was terrified of the prospect now. He felt that all it would take was for him to say the wrong thing, and they would descend upon him just like they had gone after the other guy. Bart had no intentions of being that aggressive, of course, but he still feared that he may wind up accidentally sending the wrong message

"Can I just, uh... go?" He requested shakily. "Please?"

Bart had to admit that these guys had a pretty good point. The island was only getting more dangerous as more people wound up killing, and he was definitely not intimidating enough on his own to make someone stand down. At least if he stuck around these two, he would have a decent numbers advantage should things start spinning out of control.

In addition, considering that one of them had just knocked out an armed man with his bare hands, Bart was fairly confident that he was not negotiating from a position of power.

"Okay, uh... I guess I can stay with you guys." The words practically fell out of his mouth in shaking, disjointed fashion. "Um... if you're all right with it, I mean."

He was going to end it off there, but he realized something else that would probably be important if he was considering sticking around for a while.

"So, uh... what are your names again?"

On the bright side, Bart appreciated that Jerry and Matt were trying to make him feel better, or at least he thought they were. Unfortunately, Jerry not only referred to himself as a seasoned killer in the process, but the very recent memory of him laying Alan flat was still extremely fresh in Bart's mind. That kind of undercut their sincerity and made Bart question if he should really trust their attempts at diplomacy.

... But at the same time, they had a point in how there was safety in numbers. Three people were harder to ambush than one and they would have a much better chance at fighting back an attacker if they had the advantage in that department. But then again, the numbers game didn't really do much for them when Nancy showed up at the radio tower...

Bart shuddered as the image of Jennifer flashed into his mind again. He slowly put his hands down and looked between Jerry and Matt for a few moments, formulating a response in his mind.

"... So, uh... I'm gonna be okay with you guys, then?"

"Um... okay.

Bart meekly followed Matt and Jerry, hoping that whatever happened next would be a little more peaceful than this encounter.

((Bart Capppotelli continued elsewhere...))
