(Hannah Kendrickstone continued from Act II, Scene I)

Hannah was sitting on a bed in one of the other rooms in the wards. She had slept well, surprisingly enough. It had been nice not to be alone for awhile, especially with someone she liked pretty well. She'd been able to forget about her goal for a little while too. She had still wanted to find Irene and Olivia, but it hadn't felt as pressing.

She had been wrong.

Irene was dead.

She'd failed.

Alvaro had fucking murdered her. Her hands tightened around the board and she just sat there for a minute or two in silence. She found it hard to understand that Irene was dead. Sure, she'd seen the dead bodies around the island, but it just seemed so impossible that Irene could be dead. How was it that the last she saw of her was Irene running down the hallway of the asylum? It had been in the other hall a floor down. So close.

But she was dead. Hannah should have tried harder. Spending time resting after she had rolled her ankle had been a waste of time. She might have been able to prevent it if she'd just found her. She felt the first sob hit her. How could she be gone? She stood up rapidly and threw the board against the wall.

Then she screamed, loud and shrill.

No she wasn't okay. She had been a crappy friend and now Irene was dead. And it all just felt like she could have done more. She wasn't entirely sure how, but she could just feel the truth of it in her gut.

Her hands now gripped her face around her cheekbones tight. If Noah knew she had failed he'd probably judge her. He was nice, but she knew it was true. Who wouldn't?

She could feel the tears on her face, but that didn't matter.

"No no no," she responded quietly.

Things probably wouldn't be okay ever again.

Hannah listened. The first part was helping. Everyone lost someone, and even though she didn't think any of it could be Noah's fault, she couldn't help but be angered when she found out who it was.

How could he talk so casually about Irene being dead? Sure, he said that she mattered, but it didn't match up with how casually he mentioned that she was dead and that he was alive. She had sat down on the bed partway through Noah talking. It wasn't something she thought consciously about. She just felt like she couldn't stand anymore.

A weird paranoid part of her brain thought that he had mentioned Irene because he somehow knew that Hannah had failed her. She knew that the odds of that being the truth were close to impossible.

"I..."

She was suddenly aware of her wet face again and put her hands up, covering it to try and hide from the shame of the words she was about to say.

"I failed her," she blurted out.

Crap on a cracker.

That had been a stupid thing to say.

She didn't know how to explain. Noah would just judge her probably.

That didn't stop her from trying.

"I, we were together, and and, she ran off, and now fucking Alvaro, and and and"

She sobbed again and turned away from Noah.

Hannah was shocked. Noah didn't blame her. It was hard to wrap her mind about it. It was at least a little bit her fault, but maybe Noah was just genuinely nice that way. Or maybe it hadn't been her fault. No, she couldn't accept that at this point. Even if she couldn't think of how she could have changed the outcome, she felt certain that there had to be some way.

But she didn't argue.

Her fists unclenched and she exhaled heavily.

She felt extra bad for how she seemed to have made Noah feel worse. Thinking about death probably wouldn't help them.

Her voice was shaky.

"Okay."

"S-sorry."

It felt wrong to be considering thinking about happier things, but it seemed like that's what Noah needed. The problem was she couldn't think of anything.

"I uh, I wish I could just sleep for a week, y'know?"

Her ankle could feel better then, and maybe she wouldn't think about the death anymore. Of course, intellectually she knew that she probably didn't have a week to live, but she just felt so tired, so resting just sounded that much better.

Hannah wasn't sure what to say. She really needed to find Olivia, but she was just so tired. And it was all so demoralizing. How would she find her at this point? She would probably fail at this point anyway. It all felt so hopeless. She wanted to think she could do better next time, but she didn't know if that was true. And it really felt like it wasn't. She'd circled the island looking for Irene and hadn't seen a glimpse of her.

She turned back towards Noah, and took in a sharp breath as her ankle protested. She wasn't sure what she'd try to say to parents or friends back home, or anyone else. Maybe she'd think of something. She did know she could use some rest, and just a chance not to be so frantic like she had been the last few days.

Besides Noah didn't seem eager to jump on her for messing up. She couldn't waste that.

She gave a weak smile.

"Yeah, yeah, downtime works."

Hannah wasn't entirely sure she was okay with being alone, but she couldn't say that. If Noah needed time to himself, then she could understand that. She'd had enough of being alone though. The time she'd spent by herself had been so nerve-wracking, and it was nice to have someone around. She remembered what it felt like to scream into the sound of only the wind and rain. It had been horrifying.

She let out a short giggle at the joke. It was a reflex. It was obvious that he was trying to tell a joke, and she responded like she should. It made things easier. Paltry. She knew it meant something was like, small, or unimportant. Something like that.

She sat down on the bed and thought. What would she say to her parents? She was thinking about saying something. She wasn't sure they would watch any of it. She kind of hoped they wouldn't. But if they did and she never even acknowledged them, that could hurt too, couldn't it?

She wiped her forehead absently.

"Oh."

"It sounds like poultry."

She felt a stupid grin on her face, before she laughed again, in earnest this time.

Hannah had tried to spend the rest of her day resting, but whenever she thought she was close to actual rest, she'd remember something. Sometimes it was that she probably wouldn't see her parents or friends again. Or that Irene was dead. Noah's reassurances hadn't been enough to get rid of that whole feeling, no matter how much she wanted it to.

At one point she'd tried to say something to the nearby camera, to pass on a message to her parents. She felt like it just came out as a mess. She wasn't sure how to communicate how important they were to her, not just because, well, they were her parents, but also that they were mostly good parents. She knew that not all parents in Arizona would have had as good of reactions to her coming out as they did. But the words didn't come out right, and she wasn't sure anyone would understand what she was trying to say.

Then she had cried a bit. It was just all so damn frustrating.

She flinched when she heard the knock on the door.

"Yeah. I'm fine," she lied, trying to put a bit of false cheer into it.

She didn't want to drag Noah down with her.

"I..."

She wasn't sure. She hated being in the room. It had started to feel like a prison. Maybe it had felt that way to some other people a long time ago, but she wasn't entirely sure on the exact nature of how asylums worked in the past. Although old movies had always made them look horrible, it also made everyone in them look pretty awful too. And sure some mentally ill people had problems, a lot of it was people just not understanding. Her ADHD didn't make her a monster and it was hard for her to consider judging people with more severe disorders too harshly. Even if she couldn't really understand.

The problem was that she wasn't sure if being anywhere on the island would be better. It was filled with dead friends and classmates and fuck, she was probably going to die on it. She probably should find Livvie though. That could maybe maybe maybe make up for Irene.

"Yeah, look around, of course!" she responded, putting some false cheer into her voice.

"Just let me grab my stuff and things."

She went and picked up her bag and the board. It wasn't much, but it's what she had.

Hannah sighed as she finished grabbing her things. The rest of the island was sure to be horrible, but so had been staying in that room for the past day. She picked up the backpack and put it over her shoulders. It was lighter than it had been. She was worn out enough that it didn't reassure her much, especially since it was mostly lighter from her eating her way through a large part of her food supply.

She moved her head to the left and felt the satisfying pop from her neck. She hadn't realized how stiff everything had gotten. Maybe it would have been worth it to have kept doing her exercises even in this situation. But she hadn't, and she didn't feel like telling Noah to wait up because she needed to stretch.

She walked into the hall and saw Noah clutching that...thing. He seemed to be focused on something.

"Noah, uh, what's up?"

It was casual, but still asked a question. Hopefully the answer was that nothing was going on and she was just imagining it.

Noah thought there had been someone there and he had been right.

Who were they? Hannah thought it was a funny question. They all went to school together, if whoever the boy was wanted to know who they were he could have just shown himself and then they all could have recognized one another, and that would have been that. They had only gone to school together for literal years.

It was fine though. He was probably just scared. They were all scared, even if Hannah couldn't understand why anyone would be scared of her. She was just a very tired teenage girl at this point, not a malevolent ghost, or a crazed killer, or any dangerous kind of person.

"It's Hannah and Noah," she chimed in. That should explain things, there weren't that many other Noah's or Hannah's in their class, were there?

She didn't think so.

Hannah wasn't sure what to think when she heard it was Ben Litcher out there. That's mostly because she could barely remember him at all. He was pretty well a face in the crowd she could attach a name to and not much else. She thought that maybe they were in a class together at some point, but even that wasn't something she wanted to commit to.

She glanced over at Noah.

"I can talk," she responded, while rolling her eyes a little bit, making sure that only Noah could see that part.

Sure she could talk, but she wasn't sure what they would talk about other than the obvious case of being in that situation being awful.

Hannah took a couple quick steps back. Maybe Noah had a point with telling her to stay back. Hearing Ben talk to himself wasn't exactly reassuring. Sure it was stressful, but it was possible that he was unstable. She bit her lip. It was terrible to think that way, but she couldn't help but think it could be the truth.

"Uh. Not great."

Silently she seethed. She agreed to talk to him and that's what she went with?

Not a great start to things.

Squirrelfriend. Hannah wasn't familiar enough with Ben to know if he was a squirrel like she was a chipmunk, of if it was some other sort of thing. She wasn't going to ask. It wasn't the time, and well, a lot of people would be disturbed by being called a furry when they weren't. Even though that was super silly, she had to acknowledge that it could make things worse.

But they needed to go. Noah must have been made uncomfortable by Ben talking to himself as she was.

"Nothing good, um, sorry Ben but Noah and I have to check up on some things."

She hoped Noah would back her up, or knew of another way down. She wasn't sure if there was a way out of the wards other than going past Ben and he might get upset.

She really hoped he didn't.

Hannah started to follow Noah down the hall when she heard the question.

Maxim? Not at all.

"No, I haven't, sorry."

She started walking faster. They needed to get out of there.
