((Lily Caldwell continued from Megalomania.))

The day had been damp, awkward and just plain uncomfortable. Lily responded to Isabel as little as possible. She didn’t know if she could do anything else without saying what she was really thinking. Lily had never been much of a talker, anyway. She preferred to listen.

Even if listening to Isabel was like being stabbed metaphorically in the ears. It was just that the alternative was being stabbed literally in her ears and any other number of organs and/or orifices. Probably completed with some kind of skinning, judging by Conrad’s body. Maybe she should have taken the throat cut.

Isabel stopped at a door. There had been a noise. Lily took a step back. She waited, and hoped it was someone she didn’t know.

She didn’t see who it was, because Isabel closed the door too fast and swore. That was, in its own way, much more chilling than Isabel charging in. For Isabel, homicidal monster, to see something and say ‘shit,’ it had to be bad.

“...They have a gun?” Lily guessed hesitantly.

The sword and sickle were on the ground.

Lily could take them. One of them. Finish the job she should have completed last night. Make up for what she’d let happen. Just in case this girl, Asha, couldn’t do it herself. She was in a good position for it.

But Isabel had just said what happened to the last person who touched her weapons.

So Lily moved back, pressing her back to the wall and trying to hide as best she could in an empty hallway. She watched. She waited to see if Asha could do what four—five, if Lily counted herself—other people couldn’t. She hoped Asha could. But she could see from how the knife froze that Asha didn’t have it in her.

So despite the inherent stupidity in such a thing, Lily shut her eyes, covered her ears and did her best to block out what she knew would come.

And now more people were appearing, and a crossbow had come out. Lily had tried to block it out, but she couldn’t ignore the noise of a crossbow bolt thunking into the aged floor.

Lily opened her eyes, saw the struggle, the fighting, glimpses of blood, and shut her eyes again. Instead, she scooched backwards, sliding along the walls.

Her back hit a door, she could tell from the change in how the surface behind her felt. She reached up, found the handle and scrambled backwards through the door, closing it behind her.

It wouldn’t save her if they tried to chase her, but it’d keep her out of the way until Isabel killed them or they killed Isabel. And then… and then…

She didn’t know what came after that.

Isabel was injured. For a moment, Lily had to stop herself from smiling a little. Isabel deserved whatever had been inflicted on her, and Lily was only disappointed that the job hadn’t been finished.

But now Isabel wanted Lily to treat her. To… help.

Lily considered going for one of the weapons again, but she knew that… injured as Isabel was, she could still overpower Lily. A raccoon could overpower Lily.

So, silently, Lily grabbed the medical supplies and moved to sit next to Isabel. The best she could do right now was do such a bad job that, hopefully, Isabel would die of infection. As she moved over there, she glanced at the lock.

She wondered how long that would hold, and what the crossbow-wielding guy would do with her if he broke in. Would he believe her if she told the truth? Or if she lied? Not now that she was helping to mend Isabel’s wounds.

Isabel gave clear instructions. She knew more about how to do this than Lily did, seemingly. Lily would occasionally catch glimpse of the mess of bandages on her hand from the first day and feel mildly embarrassed.

Noises came from outside as Lily treated Isabel’s wounds, still feeling that ghostly glare at her back. Lily didn’t know who was dead. She was sure someone was. Probably Asha. Isabel couldn’t have killed all of them. She shut that out, and focused on the wounds. It wasn’t too hard with the instructions. Lily had good hands, the pains occasionally spasming across one of her palms from the mirror shard aside.

Isabel thanked her and collapsed.

Lily thought it might have been another trick. Another trap. She looked at Isabel, then looked at the weapons on the floor. But Isabel still had a knife in reach.

She also thought about just opening the door. Unlocking it, and letting whoever survived charge in and take vengeance. But what if they decided Lily was an accomplice and killed her too? Or if Isabel somehow won and came back for Lily?

At least this way if someone did break down the door they’d probably go for Isabel first.

So Lily sat in the corner. And she waited.

-

The night passed. Lily wasn’t sure if she slept. She just knew that at some point she was awake, and it was lighter out. The announcements might be soon. So Lily didn’t look at Isabel, she just rummaged in her bag for her notepad.

She didn’t hear noise outside. She wondered if they were gone.

Lily munched on a bar that she’d taken from Isabel’s bag earlier. She was out of them and Isabel had said she’d share. No harm in taking advantage of it. The food remained as bland as they always were.

The announcements came and went, and Lily wrote down their names like she always did. None of them mattered, except in the practical terms. Not even Alvaro murdering again. The only name that was of some wary interest was Caedyn. But Lily was surprised it took her malicious, dreadlocked moron of an ex this long to kill anyone.

Isabel opened the door. She started to leave, and gestured for Lily to follow.

Lily did so. As she did, she saw the corpse that had once been Asha. She wrinkled her nose and tried to block it out. She saw the halberd and thought about taking it, but even if she could carry it she couldn’t carry it discreetly.

She just had to wait.

That was all she had to do. It was the only reason she was still following Isabel.

She was not afraid.

She was just cautious.
