((Junko Kurosawa continued from St. Patrick’s Purgatory))

Junko was angry, but she had no idea why.

After the run-in at the beach, literally nothing had happened. She hadn’t seen anyone else, or even a sign that anyone else existed right now. It was quiet. The silence was something Junko still hated about all this. It still felt like she was just biding her time until someone attacked her. It was the worst feeling in the world. Sometimes, she still wondered when someone was going to do it.

Today, it was particularly bad. As the hours passed by, Junko felt like there was energy pulsating, bubbling, buzzing under her skin. Like she needed to do something, move around, or else she’d explode. She’d exercised this morning, too. But even when she stretched or jogged, it was only a moment of clarity. Once she’d stopped, the feeling slowly crept back.

The announcements came back on when she was exercising again. Junko could remember a few details. Brendan Harte, one of her team mates, had killed Jerry. Junko liked Jerry. He was a quiet type, but he was cool. They’d known each other since… what, elementary? Yeah, there we go. Had it stung a little when she found out? A little, yeah, to be honest.

Danny had died too, but it didn’t sting as bad, she didn’t think. Danny… was kind of a douche. They’d dated for a while, but he broke up with her. That wasn’t the awful part. No, the awful part was how he did it. Junko had literally looked at her phone after practice to see that he broke up with her through text. He didn’t even talk to her personally. Just a text saying basically “sorry Junko, it won’t work out, bye!” Worst part was, she didn’t get why exactly he broke up with her. Her only guess was that she’d made a few jokes that… were on the raunchy side beforehand, and she may or may not been hinting a bit. She still wasn’t sure that was it. But he was dead too.

Kimiko had gotten Bradley, too. To be honest, Junko wouldn’t have been surprised if he did something to provoke her. Bradley… liked to annoy people. She remembered he once picked a fight with Aiden by talking shit about his family. And with Aiden, you never talk shit about his family. Ever. Personally, when Bradley tried to make jokes about stuff like, dunno, internment camps or nuclear bombs, she just rolled her eyes at worst. Maybe make a quip of her own about white people’s obsession with colonizing shit or something. Sure, he knew how to back down sometimes, but still. As harsh as it sounded, she wouldn’t be surprised to find out that he did something to annoy her, even if she’d been on the announcements before. Did it still sting? A little, yeah.

They weren’t the only deaths mentioned, either. Another Luz died recently. She’d seen Sabrina around a few times, but there was nothing that really stood out to her, other than her being one of the more popular kids. They just weren’t part of the same group, y’know? Samuel, though, she knew Samuel. They had vaguely similar tastes, though he wasn’t as… adventurous. She remembered Jasmine King, as well, who was completely different from Reed. Jasmine had a temper, and admittedly, Junko used to find it the funniest thing ever. There were a few other people who’d died, but she didn’t get all the names, to be honest.

But the thing was, she didn’t think the announcements were the reason why she was in such a nasty mood. It was the same last time: an accomplishment of sorts. Congrats, you made it another day. Can you make it to the next announcement? Let’s see if you can. Being sad, though, it wouldn’t help, would it? She didn’t want to die grieving, if she had to die. Instead, it was another day to try to make it out alive. Even when her mind wandered, she tried to remind herself of this fact.

However, her mood hadn’t improved when she walked past a copse of bushes just outside a building, only to smell what she could only guess was the world’s largest roadkill. The blanket of flies hadn’t helped, either. It was a scent she’d experienced a few times while she was here, but she didn’t really look for it. She hadn’t seen that many bodies, but smelled? Yeah, if that was a dead body smell, she smelled it. Instead of looking though, her pace had picked up as she approached the building. Junko had announced her arrival by slamming open the door, only to not find anyone there.

It’d been about an hour, she guessed, since she’d shown up. It looked like some kind of gym? It was dark, though. Some dim afternoon light had peeked in through a few cracks, but really, this was a job for Mr. Flashlight. Junko sat criss-crossed apple sauce on the gym floor against the wall, the flashlight casting a beam on the outside exit just across from her as it rested on the floor. There appeared to be old gym equipment, but she hadn’t checked to see if they still worked yet.

Instead, she was currently focused on trying to demolish a piece of bread. The key word here was “trying”. Good news: after mugging Jasmine Reed, she did have more food and water. The bad: most of the food was terrible. Junko had eaten high-energy bars before. It was kind of an athlete thing. Protein and energy in general was good if you have an event coming up. But, somehow the terrorists had found the worst thing imaginable. And it wasn’t like Junko had never tasted a bad energy bar before. But these… these were somehow even worse than anything she’d ever had. The crackers were okay, kind of bland. And… then there was the bread.

God, did they ever actually, y’know, looked up an instructional on how to make bread? Then again, they were terrorists, and they probably wanted them to suffer. But damn, maybe it was just her sour mood, but it tasted like everything that could go wrong with bread, short of burning it, went wrong. Maybe it was Junko knew a bit about good bread, but it tasted a bit stale and weird. And yet, here she was, still eating it. It’s hard to be too picky when your choices were terrible ration bars, bland crackers, and even worse bread.

Maybe just a few more attempts at swallowing, then she could try to do something about all this pent-up irritation. Just a few more moments of pretending that the bread was not only edible, but delicious.

But if someone interrupted her attempts at eating atrocious bread? Well… the bat was laying across her lap for a reason.

Clang.

That got Junko’s attention. Without even thinking about it, she tossed the bread back into the open bag and stood up. It happened so quickly, she felt almost like a jumpcut in real life. Straight from sitting on the ground eating bread, then, bam. Standing with a bat in her hand.

Junko took a deep breath, and looked at the source. The flashlight, still on and laying on the floor, had a moving shadow just in the edge of its beam. Someone was here. Someone was definitely here. Junko’s eyes narrowed. But within a heartbeat, she lifted the flashlight with her free hand, and flicked it off and on towards the shape.

“I see you, you know,” she called out.

Once again, she wasn’t sure if that was a good idea. There was a possibility that they had a gun or something. Maybe it was Isabel, or Nancy. She distinctly remembered that their names had come up on the announcements. In fact, it was Isabel, wasn’t it? The person who… well, killed Danny. Kimiko had gotten a few kills, too, which still seemed weird. Eh, maybe especially the part where she killed Bradley, too.

But, she did feel prepared for whatever this person had to offer. She still had the bat, which had served her loyally this entire time. Well, okay, she still had the chisel, too. And the hammer. She hadn’t figured out what to do with it after finding it inside Jasmine’s bag, so she didn’t throw it out. Maybe she should? Her bag was heavily enough. Anyways, that wasn’t as important as potential killer.

The energy continued to fizz inside her, only getting more and more unbearable now. Perhaps they would fight her, or perhaps she could steal more things from them. Again though, it didn’t seem like she needed anything right now, did she? Walk away? Was that another option? Didn’t feel like it.

“Well, sorry for going King Lear on you, I guess.”

That happened in King Lear, didn’t it? Eye-gouging. Yeah, that happened. Junko wasn’t much of a Shakespeare person, but she distantly remembered that coming up in English class. She remembered that Hannah Kendrickstone liked Shakespeare, so it was a fitting reference, sorta.

Anyways, Hannah Kendrickstone. Again, liked Shakespeare, and wasn’t she a furry too? Maybe? Ah, well. Drama club person, too. She was okay, really. They were in separate grades and didn’t hang out with the same people, but she seemed alright.

Though, she was holding something that looked like a board of some kind. So, great, she had a weapon. Bat versus board, who would win? Well, Junko’s money was on bat, but eh, she was biased. Though, the board had an advantage, in a way. A bit of a longer reach.

Well, if Hannah tried something, that pent-up energy would be put to good use, at least. Kinda, sorta.

Junko pointed the flashlight beam towards the board.

“Whatcha got there?”

“Prop crew, eh?”

Okay, Junko chuckled a little. A little.

That was a new way to describe the people who’d kidnapped them. Sure, Junko guessed that’s what they did, sorta. If they choose to interpret SOTF as, like, this weird indie net series. Probs more of a cult deep web hit than anything gif-worthy on Tumblr, unless you were also equally concerned about social stigma as you were about not getting arrested. Which was to say, both had to be non-existent.

“They gave me a bat. It’s done a good job for me so far,” Junko said.

She punctuated her sentence by sliding it upwards and slinging it over her shoulder. Junko didn’t mention the part about the chisel and hammer. Nor did she want to, nor did she need to. Technically, Hannah had asked what they gave her, not what she had. So, at worst it was a little white lie.

It was friendly. Too friendly. It was strange how easily people talk to each other about stuff here. Everyone at the beach was more concerned about discussing, like, death and shit. Jasmine hadn’t said anything, but even Darius was chatty before, y’know, wasting her stuff. Maybe she was just getting paranoid. Maybe she was just expecting Hannah to lunge forward to beat her with that board. Junko’s eyes locked onto it for a brief second, then remembered.

Oh, right. If they were being friendly, at least for the time being, at least she’d make it clear who Hannah was talking to.

“By the way…”

Junko flicked the flashlight off. Then, she pointed it under her chin and turned it back on.

“Boo.”

Okay, there. Hannah probably figured out who she was. Maybe she could do the whole convo thing again, but well, her feet were still planted on the ground. Her grip was still tight. It felt as if Junko’s body was prepared for something to happen. If Hannah made the wrong move, even the slightest, though, she knew what to do.

“Don’t what?”

Junko pointed the flashlight’s beam back at Hannah. She seemed nervous. For a moment, Junko’s face was expressionless, serious. Then she smiled.

“Hannah… you think I’m gonna hit you with it?”

She had to chuckle again at that. Seriously? Nah, not really. Well, maybe. It depended on what Hannah did. Junko still felt a little primed, in a way. Still willing to do the whole convo thing, but still. Still.

“No, probably not. Unless you turn out to be, like, a douche or something. You’re not a douche, right?”

She drummed her fingers along the bat’s handle. Hannah hadn’t been a douche yet. However, emphasis on “yet.” She did have a board, after all. If Hannah wanted to, she could just run up and hit her. Junko could defend herself from that, but y’know.

Junko’s smile only got bigger.

“Good.”

She moved the flashlight towards Hannah’s feet.

Okay, so Hannah wasn’t going to douche the place up. It did seem a little… anticlimactic again. But honestly, she had to be glad, sorta. That she wasn’t the killing type, y’know? Eh, at least she was a decent person to have a conversation with. Maybe. It depends. What would they talk about? Shakespeare, so Hannah could correct her on which plays she was referencing? Nah. Other douches? Like who?

“Eh… I’ve ran into douches here. Like, earlier, well, you know Darius, right? Kind of weeby guy with a green streak? Yeah…”

Junko replayed the memory in her head. Darius wasting her water, how they fought about it. Not just “yelling” fought, “actually beating each other” fought.

“He was a douche, but I dealt with it, y’know? What about you? Any douche tales of your own?”

She didn’t feel it was necessary to go into details.

“Oh, girl from my grade with a saw. That’s… helpful, I guess,” Junko said.

Though Kaitlyn and Alan? That seemed genuinely so. “Odd” wasn’t detailed, but in a conversation about other people’s fuckery? Gave an idea, at least? “Odd” could mean a lot of things. Tara Behzad “odd”, Darius van Dyke “odd”, or Isabel Ramirez “odd”? The distinction needed to be made, damn it. Though wasn’t Alan like, this senior guy who’s interested in “Discordianism”, whatever the hell that meant? Still a good striker, from what she’d seen, but… well, he was just as bad as Bradley in the “pissing people off” department. For a moment, Junko pushed away one thought, and pursued another. Anyways, Kaitlyn was this roller derby girl. She could respect that, too. Thing was, could she picture Kaitlyn doing something? She totally could.

Well. That did form an idea, at least, of how they could be “odd.”

“Anyways. I don’t mind you sticking here a bit. Not too much, really, unless you do decided to be terrible. I’ve got a twitchy bat finger if you do.”

Did that make any sense? Probably not. But eh. At least Junko wasn’t… batshit right now. That was better, she decided.

Hannah, though, was currently edging away towards the door. Maybe she’d scared her too much? Maybe. Junko had calmed down some, but the energy still fizzed and popped under her skin. But Junko felt herself take a step forward. A small step, but a step.

“Oh, those two?”

Junko raked through her memory, frowning. There was Darius, who was, again, a douche. There was Jasmine Reed, who killed someone. There was Jasper, who sobbed that they should just “get along”. There was an eerily quiet Leslie. There was Tara, who was so odd Junko had no idea where to start. So…

“Nah. Haven’t seen Irene or Olivia.”

She knew them, though. Irene was another skater type, and she was alright. Cool, even. Olivia, wasn’t she a robotics club person and kind of jittery? Okay, some frame of reference, there.

“I also saw Tara Behzad acting weird and burning herself, though, if that means anything?

Hannah left. For a few minutes, Junko stared out the door she’d shown up at, then had left through. Well, that was a thing? It wasn’t particularly weird like Darius or Tara, but it was a thing. “A thing” seemed unspecific and yet not? On the whole issue, y’know.

Then, Junko went back to her daypack. Sat down. Picked up the bread. Attempted another bite. Attempted to swallow.

Maybe something else would happen soon. Maybe?

Junko had spent the night in the gym. It only got darker, but it beat staying out in the rain, obvs. If anything, the complaint was that it was boring. Some of the equipment still worked, or at least some semblance of it. Others, though, had rusted shut. Which sucked! Junko would have loved using those old-timey exercise bikes, but they wouldn’t budge. Any of them. Maybe she was using them wrong, but maybe rust is a jerk. Maybe both were it. There were weightlifting benches here too, but don’t you need a spotter for those? But it wasn’t like that even if she had one that she could do it. The weights had gone mysteriously missing. If the terrorists did it, there’s something kind of funny about that. Oh, we’re taking away those weights because someone might hurt themselves. Now go beat someone with that bat.

She’d also gotten hopeful when she saw that there were showers. She kind of stunk, and a nice hot shower would do the trick. When she tried, though, it made this horrific squealing sound. Junko’s response was “fuck that,” and put her clothes back on.

So yeah. To make a long story short, the worst thing she had to say was that even though there were exercise equipment, she was bored out of her mind.

Sometimes her thoughts still wandered. Sometimes she still thought about Danny, or Bradley, or Jerry. Sometimes she wondered about their last moments. But every single time, she pushed those thoughts away. Maybe it wasn’t worth it to dwell, right? Thoughts like that weren’t good to spend time on.

Anyways, she did come up with a bit of a game that evening. You see, Junko had found a punching bag in the corner. One of those heavy ones, to be specific. It smelled weird, but it seemed workable. Junko at first tried, y’know, punching it? But her hands ached quickly. Punching things are hard. Guess that meant no Oldboy style “punch the wall to make your fingers stronger” things for her, then? Eh, maybe. But she came up with a solution. Junko had remembered that you can practice batting on punching bags. To be honest, she didn’t remember where she heard that. Maybe Cris brought it up? Maybe it was one of the other baseball team people? Maybe she saw a Youtube video about it? Maybe was just imagining it? Whatever it was, the thought popped into her head. So, she did just that. Hit the bag with the bat. It knocked some dust out, and after a while there was a softer spot in the bag, but hey, it worked. After a while, the bag fell to the floor because the chain was rusty and fragile. But even that didn’t necessarily end the game. She just propped it up against the wall, and went at it like that. Junko even threw in some punches and kicks afterwards, despite her poor experiences with punching it earlier.

At least that buzzing feeling had subsided for a while. She did have something to do, something to take some emotions out on.

That morning, Junko played a few more rounds of that game, then jogged a few laps around the gym. The gym wasn’t bad for jogging, really. It was just big enough for her. Hardwood floor wasn’t anything unlike what the school had in the gymnasium. The other kind of gym, yeah.

She had started some sit-ups when the announcements came back on. Junko sat back up, her legs folded underneath her. Was there anything noteworthy this time around?

Well, Wayne Cox died. Junko searched her mind a bit, before remembering. Oh yeah, he’d shown up to the party she hosted. The Anti-SH one, where Darius was drunk and a weeb. Yeah, he and Raina kinda ran off because of that. Cris had seemed concerned about that, didn’t he? Weren’t they still off? She’d ask him, or her, but death games weren’t the best place to ask about people’s relationships. Suicide, it sounded like? Huh.

Jasper died too. This time, it sounded like Alvaro had gotten him. You know, that nervous guy who kept popping up on the announcements alongside Kimiko, Isabel, and Nancy. Junko did have a biased opinion on him to begin with. His parents ran a restaurant, her mom ran a restaurant. It was kinda natural that she’d somewhat side-eye a competitor. Anyways, Jasper. She remembered what he said earlier.

Can’t we all just get along?

Well, say that to Alvaro then. See how it goes. Didn’t work out? Too bad, she guessed.

It was so weird, though, knowing that he was now dead. Junko had sat in thought a few minutes after the announcement ended. Then she remembered what Danya had said about Wayne.

Oh well, he's made sure you're all one step closer to winning.

It was something she’d been telling herself all along. Each announcement meant that she was still alive. That she was here for another day. She was still living off that mantra of “Survive until something happens.”

Junko still wasn’t sure what that “something” was. But it was “something.” Each announcement, each morning, meant that she made it ahead. She’d survived where others didn’t. She’d made it. Each day wasn’t an excuse to be sad. It was an excuse to be happy. Happy that you made it. That you didn’t break to pressure, or that someone didn’t kill you, or something else didn’t happen. Wasn’t it easier to view it like that?

She stood up. Junko stretched her shoulders for a few seconds, and then picked up her bag and bat. Bag was still heavy, but eh, maybe she could manage. The weather outside didn’t seem as bad, so maybe she’d step outside. Go for a walk, or another jog. Some air that wasn’t dusty would be nice.

Junko slid to the door, and after opening it, briefly looked behind her. The same dead smell had drifted through the open door. But she looked forward. Walked outside.

However, she never realized that Bradley was in the bush just outside the exit. Not even once. She never did look into the smell.
