(Keith Bauer continued from Down the Rabbit Hole)

Keith's mood had deteriorated significantly since they had left the chapel the day before. He hadn't wanted to be alone, sure, but searching for other people's friends wasn't great either. It hadn't been his initial plan. The initial plan with Joshua had been to find a way out, to escape, or get rescued, or however he wanted to think of it. What were Alice and Sandra going to do once they found their friends anyway, wait for death?

Death was coming too. The morning announcement had proven it. Brendan Harte had won that killer prize. Nancy, Isabel, and Kimiko had all killed again. Jasmine hadn't. That feeling of wrongness in his gut came back again. He wasn't sure if he believed it was all Jasmine's fault anymore. She had accused he and Joshua of trying to kill her. She had seemed crazy, but if she assumed everyone was out to get her wouldn't she have killed again? It could have been Joshua's fault.

He looked out the window at the morning sun while his fingers absently twisted the knob on the ancient radio. Part of him wondered how many more times he had to see the sun rise.

Keith hadn't wanted to return to the asylum either, but the biggest building on the island was probably the best place to find others. He wasn't really sure that he wanted them to succeed. What if the people they were looking for were killers? That would be a problem. More importantly, there was that question of what would happen next. Keith didn't want to just wait for death, but looking for their friends seemed like a way to waste time while doing so.

He sighed and looked over his shoulder towards the others.

"Any, shit, any idea where your friends would be at?"

They better have an idea. Random wandering wasn't what he wanted.

Keith's fingers tightened around the crappy radio. The lone response was pathetic. Sure, it's not like most people would have come in with an idea of what to do if they were abducted for SOTF, but most people had an idea of what their friends were like. Like hey, if your friends found hospitals creepy, they probably wouldn't hang out at the asylum. Or if they were constantly afraid of people, they would hide out in the basement, because who would bother looking in that flooded mess? Edgy atheists probably would avoid the chapel like the plague.

Keith was surprised they didn't have any idea. Shit, Alice didn't even bother to respond. They were probably on a pointless quest, but to make sure, he had another question.

He exhaled loudly.

"So what's the plan here? Shit, like, how does this help? Or are we just wandering around until Nancy chops off our heads?"

He knew that expressing his frustration so obviously probably wouldn't get the best answers, but fuckin' shit, unless they knew their friends could get them off the island, he was probably spinning his wheels with this plan.

Well now he felt like a damn idiot. Apparently he needed to search every room he entered to make sure no one was lurking around. If Nancy or Isabel had been the one hiding in the room it could have been way worse for all of them.

He had heard the term playing in reference to SOTF before, but he had to wonder where it came from. If he survived this he'd have to look it up.

"Jesus, shit, you scared me," Keith responded as he turned around to face the room.

Alice and Sandra had done a decent job of describing their goals prior to his comments. They both appeared to have decided to ignore them. Even though Lizzie's appearance demanded some attention that annoyed him. He had legitimate criticisms of their plan, especially since escaping the island should have been their top priority. He kept wandering away from that plan and needed to better focus on it.

Too bad he had no idea how it could be done.

"Haven't seen him. Sorry," he added. Keith thought it best to be straightforward about things. She hadn't asked if they'd seen Ty, but she probably wanted to know. Even if he didn't care really, it's not like he knew Tyler well at all.

Neither of the girls were willing to answer the question about Nancy. He didn't get it. If Lizzie wanted to chase after a murderer that was her own choice. Not that Keith would be of much help to her. Despite his comment, he hadn't seen Nancy. Good thing too, he had enough problems without having to deal with her.

"Sorry, haven't seen her," he adjusted his glasses, "just a convenient example."

That's all it had been, Keith could have easily picked Isabel or Kimiko for examples. Nancy just came to mind first. He really wished they were focusing on goals that could prolong their lives, but if everyone else wanted to ask have you seen so and so then fine, he could deal with it.

He was a little curious though. What could Lizzie want with her?

He gestured at Alice.

"But yeah, why?"

Lizzie didn't want Nancy to get away it. It made sense. He didn't want a murderer to get away with taking lives either. His thoughts returned to the events of the first night. Keith wasn't sure if Jasmine was a murderer and that bothered him. It wasn't even clear if Jasmine had been sane enough to answer the question if he had asked it. There were more important things than the murderers though. He had to keep focused on that.

"She probably won't,' he responded to Lizzie quietly.

"I mean, unless we get rescued."

The odds were against both possibilities. If the terrorists got their way and only one person lived, the odds were still against Nancy. A rescue was unlikely as well, it had only happened once and he didn't know anything about how it happened. He still managed to feel some hope for it though.

Then Tyler came in, looking like shit. Alice moved across the room away from Tyler, but Keith hadn't caught what he had said.

"Sorry, didn't catch that."

Keith wasn't sure to do. Tyler, well, Tyler looked like shit. He had asked for help, but Keith had no idea how to help, although it looked like Alice was going to try. Lizzie seemed like she was glad to see him, but Keith didn't really know her, and had only just now seen her on the island, so it didn't count for much.

He hung back. Alice was helping, and Lizzie was interested in Tyler. Maybe if he just waited a moment he'd find out something important. Any information mattered of course. Any of it could be useful for keeping them alive. Although they were all going to die unless he or someone else figured things out.

That was the truly important thing.

While Lizzie gave Tyler water and they talked, Keith was trying to remember everything he could about the older boy. He knew he was a wrestler, so he was probably at least a bit aggressive. He insisted on getting tattooed and putting pieces of metal in his face, so he probably didn't care that much about getting a real job.

Keith briefly wondered how getting dropped on the island had impacted the Arby's he worked at. They'd probably found someone to take his shifts. Or they'd just been understaffed. That always sucked. Curly fries didn't make themselves after all. His parents probably were impacted a bit too. Keith was supposed to have installed some new software on the office computer after the field trip.

What mattered in the present though was that Tyler was probably an aggressive guy and just seemed kinda shifty in general.

Keith responded to Sandra's question before Tyler could respond.

"He probably got in a damn fight."

It was the explanation that made sense.

The newest pair on the scene weren't happy with him. Keith wasn't surprised, but he was upset. Tyler's words about the sword and leaving people to die had really struck a nerve. Keith could feel the corner of his mouth twitching as Sandra and Alice tried to defuse the situation.

He wasn't sure what to say. Joshua hadn't been moving when he'd left, but what if he'd been wrong and Joshua had still been alive at that point? Or if he hadn't agreed to keep watch outside. Or what if he'd stood up to Jasmine? She had seemed off. Would she really had tried to kill him? Shit. He didn't know and the scene was replaying in his head over and over and all he could know for sure is that somewhere along the line he had fucked up.

"It wasn't like...just...he wasn't moving anymore, okay?" he responded defensively.

He shrank down a little and stared at his shoes. They could probably all tell that he'd fucked up now. They knew he had failed.

He should have tried. Well no shit he should have tried. He did try. Sort of. He'd run into the library despite the screaming, but apparently in the mind of a stupid teenage girl that didn't matter. Keith thought it was idiotic that someone would think that attacking a crazy chick with a sword would pay off well. Then again, she was looking for vengeance against Nancy, so that really showed how skewed her priorities were. Being alive was more important, even if the process sucked. His stomach twisted with the shameful memory of begging Jasmine not to kill him.

He didn't respond to Lizzie's bait. He had to keep his head, even if it was harder than usual. In the back of his mind he wished he was back in Arizona where there were plenty of ways to blow off steam after a long shift of his manager bitching at him at work. Sometimes, after work he and a friend would take his dad's old Trans Am that Keith of all people was allowed to drive where he wanted, to work, school, whatever. His dad said it was only fair, since his brother had been allowed to drive it too. They'd take it out on Arizona 66 and just drive for a bit, speeding like crazy if they didn't spot any cops around. Once Keith had reached 120 and just stayed there for about thirty seconds before going down to regular speed. He'd felt some of the deepest calm he'd ever felt come over him before he imagined how much a speeding ticket would cost him.

His dad probably wouldn't let him take the car anymore if that happened either.

Keith wished he could feel that strange calm now, but there were barely any roads on the island, and he doubted the damn terrorists had left any cars for him to drive either.

He was pulled out of his thoughts and staring at his shoes by Sandra running out of the room and pulling Alice after her. He took a step to follow, but then stopped. If she'd wanted him to come she would have said something.

He shook his head.

"Fuck."

Keith always thought cigarettes seemed like a shitty deal. They smelled awful and heavy smokers sounded like they were gonna hack up their lungs at any time. He'd heard it was a hard habit to quit though, so if Lizzie wanted to smoke, then whatever, that was fine with him. There were plenty of dumber choices that could be made in the situation.

He bit the inside of his cheek lightly when it occurred to him that it was unlikely she'd live long enough to get cancer from the habit.

Tyler surprised him with the statement that it hadn't been his fault. The problem was that it was Keith's fault. If he hadn't listened to Joshua and stayed outside, then Joshua would probably still be alive. Or at least Keith thought so. No guarantees, but Jasmine had seemed unhinged enough that she probably couldn't have gotten the drop on both of them.

He stared at his tennis shoes again.

"It kind of was, but uh..." he trailed off.

He kept quiet for a moment.

"Sorry about being a dick."

He still didn't trust Tyler, but he supposed fighting for your friends was better than just letting them die.

Well at least Tyler was gracious about everything. Keith wouldn't have expected that before, but maybe he'd been a bit too harsh. It was something to keep in mind. Most people were probably worse here than he'd expect from their normal lives, but it was possible a few people would act better than he'd expect. Maybe Tyler was one of them.

He initially was going to turn down smoking, but then he smelled that it wasn't just tobacco in there. Keith had tried weed a few times, at friend's houses of course. He would have been on cleaning duty at the business for months if his father had ever caught him smoking it. Keith liked the way it just mellowed him out a bit more. He was usually pretty calm, but sometimes that little bit extra was nice.

He took a spliff from the pack before giving the rest back. He knew that lighting up on the island was probably a really stupid thing to do. It wouldn't help anyone survive, but they were probably all going to die anyway. It wasn't like he had a plan to save them all. He kinda doubted anyone did.

He started digging through his own bag. He remembered seeing a lighter in the first aid kit when he'd gone through his supplies with Joshua. He knew Tyler had his own lighter, but he was hardly going to ask for that after insulting the guy. He listened to the conversation. Lizzie agreed that Joshua dying had been his own fault. Like he didn't know that shit already. He wasn't sure why people killed either. Jasmine had seemed visibly off, so maybe some people just lost it. Knowing why probably wouldn't help anything, but he wasn't going to tell Lizzie that. She hadn't responded to his comment about Nancy not getting away with murder.

He had finally dug out the lighter and lit the spliff when Tyler asked him a question. He was tempted to take a little first, but decided to answer first.

"Shit, I dunno, I was part of the friend search crew, but I think I've been uninvited," he responded with a bit of an edge to his voice. The plan had been stupid, but he hadn't expected them to just run off. He felt agitated.

He took a drag.

Maybe it would help.

Keith coughed several times. His eyes watered. A foe search crew. It was a crazy idea. The killers were probably going to die anyway, like he had said.

He took another hit.

It was a crazy idea, but to Keith it sounded like it could be a workable idea. Not because he actually wanted to kill Nancy, not really. Sticking with these two though would be smart though. It was simple safety in numbers. He briefly wondered if killing the killers would slow down the death toll enough to give them better chances of being found and rescued. It was possible, but he hadn't kept track of how many people had been announced dead, or even how many people had been going on the field trip to start with. He was pretty good at math, but he couldn't just pull numbers out of mid-air to figure it out.

He didn't have a weapon anyway, so he doubted anyone would expect him to just jump in and start trying to kill people either. There could be something there with this plan.

"Sure, guess I could."

Keith was busy staring intently at the toe of his right sneaker. He didn't remember where the large scratch in the rubber came from. It was bugging him a bit. He knew that there were bigger things to worry about, like what Lizzie and Ty were discussing, about needing to find people, but damn, he just could not remember what had happened and he couldn't stop thinking about it.

He adjusted his glasses with one hand before taking another drag.

"You're welcome," he muttered quietly in response to Lizzie. He wasn't quite sure what she was thanking him for, but that was fine, not a big deal at all.

The scratch looked kind of crooked, maybe it had hit the corner of a curb or something. The corner of his mouth twitched.

Ty sounded really emotional, but Keith was having trouble focusing on the words. Plus Keith wasn't touchy-feely like that, so he just nodded his head.

Oh shit. So they were actually going to try and find people right then and there. Keith unsteadily got to his feet. Usually when he smoked weed he just lied around on a couch or a beanbag chair until it wore off. But whatever it was fine. He took a few steps forward before looking back.

He had left his bag on the floor.

"Fuck."

He turned around, took the few steps back to the bag, picked it up, and then, finally, followed after the other two students.
