Welcome to Survival of the Fittest, a RPing board loosely based off of Koshun Takami's Battle Royale, with its own unique plot and spin on the 'deadly game'. We've been around quite a while, and are now in our thirteenth year, so don't worry about us going anywhere any time soon!

If you're a newcomer and interested in joining, then please make sure you check out the rules. You may also want to read the FAQ, introduce yourself and stop by the chat to meet some of our members. If you're still not quite sure where to start, then we have a great New Member's Guide with a lot of useful information about getting going. Don't hesitate to PM a member of staff (they have purple usernames) if you have any questions about SOTF and how to get started!

Let the games begin!

((Samuel Howard continued from Room of Relaxation))

Samuel returned to the asylum on a whim. He'd slept fine in the dormitories, but he'd rather not sleep in a trashed room with a floor littered with beer bottles. The place he'd woken up was nice enough, and that he may as well return to spend the night.

While trying to find a place to rest Samuel found a library. After spending hours bored out of his mind in the dormitories, he decided to grab something to pass the time. He picked one book off the shelf, then a second, then a third. By the time he'd finished sampling the books available, the sun had gone down, and he thought it would be too dangerous to wander the asylum halls in the dark.

Well, it wasn't like he hadn't fallen asleep in a library before.

He curled up at the end of one of the bookshelves, far away from the library entrance . He'd stacked up books on both sides, and had his daypack in his lap. One of his hands was on the crossbow, perched on top of one of the stacks, just in case he needed to grab it quickly. His other hand was holding a flashlight, illuminating the pages of The Hobbit. The activity itself brought back fond memories, of the time before he had his own laptop, when he'd read by flashlight well into the night. And even now, after all this time and in this place, he could still get lost in a good story.

Shit.

A lot of things could’ve torn Samuel from a good book. Hearing footsteps in the hallway, for example, or seeing the hallway light turn on under his door frame. Years of staying up late into the night conditioned him to fear sounds in the dark.

One of the few skills he had that would pay off here.

He froze when he heard the coughing, snapping the book shut and turning off his flashlight. The book snapping shut made a louder than usual noise, but the coughing covered up the sound well. It sounded like the newcomer was at the library entrance. Samuel cursed quietly to himself, realizing that they were blocking the only exit.

Samuel’s heart was racing as sat still, holding his breath. He didn’t know who this other person was - coughs weren’t a good identifier, but it sounded like a guy. There was always the chance this person was peaceful, but that’s what he thought of Kimiko, the girl personally commended by Danya for murder. He’d gotten lucky last time, but he didn’t want to take his chances with this guy.

Slowly rising to his feet, Samuel pressed his back against the shelf, listening intently.

Samuel recognized the voice. Min-Jae Parker was all around unpleasant - seemed to be perpetually moody and mean-spirited. Definitely not someone he wanted to talk to at school, let alone encounter in a place like this.

Samuel tensed up when he heard something else - a quiet but unignorable swishing sound in the darkness. A weapon of some sort? His grip on the crossbow tightened, but he kept his arm perfectly parallel to his leg. He didn't want to jump the gun just yet. He hoped Jae would leave.

Jae was getting closer. Samuel felt his knuckles turn white as the footsteps got louder, and to his dismay, coming down the shelf he was hiding behind. He tried to slow his breathing, stand still, do anything to keep himself hidden.

But then Jae loudly declared that he was armed, sounding much closer than Samuel thought he was. The words released the floodgates, adrenaline suddenly coursing in his veins as he whirled around and shot an arrow into the dark.

Samuel didn’t need to see to know he’d missed. He didn’t know what sound an arrow made when it hit a person, but it didn’t make that. Instead, he heard a growl and felt a book slam right into his chest. He stumbled back, knocked off balance but not too hurt.

The baton to the side of his torso changed that.

He crumpled to the ground, swearing as he looked up at Jae’s shadowy form. Maybe he hadn’t done well with the crossbow, but he figured that he’d be decent at hand-to-hand combat. Jae was around his own height, but Samuel had a good forty pounds on him. He had more weight to throw around than this fucker.

Jae leaned forwards, and Samuel swung the crossbow up towards his face.

Fuck you.”

His strike connected. Jae stumbled back, and for a brief moment, Samuel felt confident. If he could get up before Jae recovered, Samuel could turn the fight in his favor. He could win, and walk out of this alive.

But before he could even prop himself up on his elbows, Jae screamed and lunged at him, beating him again and again. Samuel couldn’t tell if he was using the baton or his own fists, either way it felt like an endless pummeling he couldn't find time to counteract.

Eventually, Samuel couldn’t muster the strength to fight back, either. He felt bruises forming all over his body, and his clothes felt damp against his skin. A bone had broken - he wasn’t sure where, because he was starting to feel numb all over. His vision was getting fuzzy, and Jae showed no signs of stopping.

Was he going to die here?

This wasn't surprising in retrospect, Samuel thought. It was Survival of the Fittest, after all, and he wasn’t fit in the slightest. He didn’t know how long he thought he could survive, but whatever he thought was way too long: someone was going to catch up with him sooner than that. It was a matter of passion and anger, and Jae clearly had both. Samuel never could've hoped to beat a guy like this.

His vision darkened further, and he felt himself slip away. Samuel was going to die a victim, but he was oddly okay with that. Because deep down, he knew this was inevitable.

He never stood a chance.
