He had ran.

((Alvaro Vacanti, continued from This Isnít My Home, Itís Where Iím Locked Away))

He didnít know for how long. He didnít know how far. All he knew was that he had to run because Min-Jae was right behind him and he was bigger and stronger and more angry than ever. He couldnít fight, as his opponent was bigger and better armed than him, so he had to run. And he did. Through the building across the floor, as far as his legs could possibly take him. If he had ran past anyone, he didnít notice, and even if he saw something that vaguely reminded him of the shape of a person he didnít dare to look back and check again. He didnít know where Min-Jae was, but he knew that he was somewhere behind him and he didnít want his surprise to make him fall or slow down or anything that allowed him to catch up. No. He had to keep running. Keep running or else Min-Jae would catch up to him and he didnít know what would happen then and he didnít want to know.

So he kept running. Down the hallways. His heart was pumping. His skin was sore. It reached to his muscles and to his bones and to his throat and he wanted to stop but he couldnít. The breaths were short, shallow. Nothing reached his lungs. He needed to breathe but to breathe he needed to stop and if he stopped Min-Jae was right behind him and he would catch up and-

He needed.

He couldnít.

He couldnít.

He stopped, the last remnants of momentum in his body dissipating as he fell to his knees.

Breathe in, breathe out.

Breathe in, breathe out.

He needed to breathe and he had stopped to do it but no matter how hard he tried he couldnít. The breaths werenít reaching. They were going into his mouth and down his throat but they were staying there and they werenít going further and the bruises and batters were getting worse, he could still feel them and they hurt and he didnít know what to do about them and oh god how had he gotten these how why did this have to happen to him and how had he manage to mess this up so bad and he couldnít breathe and he couldnít breathe and he needed to-

A sharp volley of coughs came from outside the storage room.

The door opened.

More people.

Oh god.

The voices and the replies blurred in his head initially as he stared through the doorway to the storage room. People; the first he had met since Min-Jae. Faces, all staring at him because of course he had to be so loud as to accidently make himself the center of attention (they were probably judging him for that, he couldnít see their eyes but he knew that they were, it was just something he had learned to accept at this point). Faces that he recognised, if only slightly. Sandy Bricks, photographer. Danny Brooks, footballer. Audrey Reyes, someone that he couldnít think up anything for. They werenít faces that he personally knew but they were ones he knew the names of, at the very least. And they were looking at him. At his face, probably. They could see the bruises and the cuts and they were probably wondering what happened to him.

Wait, no, no, what did they think about that? Could they see his bruises? Did they know where they came from? He knew that they didnít because Min-Jae was somewhere behind him and he was the only other one there but he didnít know, he just knew that they knew, if that made sense. They knew that he had somehow managed to get those injuries from someone else and that that had to mean a fight but wait did they know Alvaro had started it? Wait, no, he did, didnít he. His glasses were broken and his face was messed up and it was all his fault. Wait, no, focus Alvaro. There were people in front of him. They knew that he was probably in a fight and he knew that he was done now. They werenít friends of his, they were just going to leave him out because why would they choose to put him in? He was him, and he was injured. That was reason enough.

He blanked out, for what seemed like a second. Focusing on the coughing and in his mind and on how this was a mistake.

He came back in again. The girl had pulled something out of her pockets. Cough drops, for him, apparently.

For him.

For him.

ďI-Ē

Wait, this had to mean something. The girl - Audrey - was willing to give them to him despite his being bruised and his being in a fight. That had to mean something. Friendliness? Friendship? He wasnít sure. But she was being incredibly nice to him, maybe he should accept it, or something. He wasnít sure.

ďThank you,Ē he said, words coming slightly stilted out of his mouth. He began to push himself up, trying to get his body against a wall. He didnít really think that just laying down there would be the best idea. He sat down, against a wall just outside the room.

The bruises and the bashes on his face and chest could be seen now, although he didnít really think about that.

People. More. Around him. Audrey came closer. Danny came closer as well. Sandy didnít, moving past Alvaro outside of sight. Alvaro didnít mind that, not too much. At least he wasnít one of the people crowding around him because even though he knew that they were only trying to help him they were close and it was scary and as much as he wanted a bit of space he didnít want to say it out loud because he knew that they would hear and they were trying to help him and he appreciated that. It was just that they were close. A little too close. The only other time someone had gotten that close to him was Min-Jae when he was sending the bar down on Alvaro and he knew that they were friendly but he just couldnít shake the feeling off and it felt like the worst thing in the world.

And they were speaking to him, too. The voices were blending in his head, individual words and messages not making it into his mind but the idea of both made it into his head. Someone had hurt him. Who was it? The answer to that question was Min-Jae, but-

Oh god.

He had started that fight. It was his fault. He had attacked Min-Jae and if they knew that they wouldnít help him. He knew they wouldnít. He figured that they were doing this out of sympathy for him and if they knew that he wasnít innocent then that sympathy would be gone. So he needed to lie. JustÖ say something that would keep their sympathy. He didnít want to do it and he didnít want to lie to these people but he needed it. He couldnít treat the wounds he had, but they were willing to. He just needed to say something but it needed to be a lie and he needed someone to treat him and he needed to just do something.

He needed to breathe. In, out, then:

ďIt was Min-Jae. He hit me.Ē

He hated it.

He had lied to them and he hated it. He had found people who wanted to help him and he immediately decided to betray their trust. And they believed it. They believed it and now they were talking badly about Min-Jae and even though Min-Jae was a jerk and even though it felt slightly good that he wasnít alone in not liking him he still felt bad because they only thought that because of what had said about him and he was lying and they believed it and he couldnít stop thinking about it. This wasnít something he would have done at home. Not at school, not at the cafe, not at home, not anywhere. He was nice, and given the company he tended to be in he didnít need to lie about anything but now he had to because they were the only two people who were nice to him and he needed someone to help him with his injuries and-

Alvaro jumped as Audrey placed a hand on his shoulder. He didnít want to look up, he didnít want to see her eyes-

A hand - Audreyís - moved his head up. He could see her eyes. They were bright. Hazel, in colour. Warm.

There was a smile on her face. A request. A compliment.

His hands were shaking. There was a smile on his face. There was probably something in his eye, as well. She liked him. She trusted him. He could trust her. He had finally found someone on this island who wasnít going to hurt him and maybe they could join up together with Danny alongside and maybe they would be able to get out of here. Yes. Yes. Yes. Things were finally looking up for him and he was happy and he could forget about Min-Jae and he could forget about his injuries and he could forget about his lie and he could just look at right now, where he had friends and where he finally felt safe.

...He was blushing, wasnít he?

She let his head down, asking him if he could stand up. He nodded, quickly, slightly. He pushed himself against the wall, moving himself up. It hurt, slightly. Not as much as he thought it would. His arm ached, his face hurt and he knew that there were other parts as well but he did it anyway. He didnít want to disappoint his new partners, after all.

He shook his head. That was right. Danny had asked him a question. About Min-Jae. He could tell the truth about that, at least.

ďHe went after me. Iím not sure if heís still following me or not.Ē

He looked down the hall in the other direction from the room. He couldnít see anybody.

He could breathe, now.

The breaths reached.

The air went into his mouth and down his throat and at long last they were able to reach his lungs. He spent a couple of seconds just letting his body breathe, each individual one not as pleasant as the last but still a moment and a place in time that he wanted to stay in as long as possible. It was nice. Relieving. He was safe and he knew now that there was nobody after him and he had two people in front of him who trusted him and even though he lied to them they still liked him and he liked them back and there were so few ways of him saying that he was relieved he was safe and he couldnít think of any more but he was so relieved and happy and he just wanted to let it be known and know it himself.

The breaths still grew long, but now they no longer had the pleasure that they had to them before. He let go of the moment, letting the world come back to him. Audrey had started talking to Danny, again. She seemed angry at him. Alvaro hoped that wasnít the case. Danny was nice, he was one of the two people who talked to him when he had fallen, so he didnít really want any harm to come to him. Really, he didnít want any harm to come to anyone, but if he had to pick and choose right now heíd probably try and see if he could avoid anything happening to the two people in front of him. He was grateful. He wanted them to know that. Although at least it seemed that Audrey had calmed down. That was good. Maybe they had stopped arguing.

Audrey came over, placing her hands on his shoulders. Then his cheeks. They tingled. He was definitely blushing. She was pretty; he couldnít help but admit. It was something about her eyes. Her face. She was sweet, and as she began to lead him off elsewhere he hoped that he got to see her smiling at him again, if they catched-

A bell rang, chimes echoing from outside and through the halls. Wait, where would there be a bell in-

His hands began to shake.

He stopped moving.

Breathe in, breathe out.

Breathe in, breathe out.

Breathe in, breathe out. Breathe in, breathe out. Breathe in breathe out breathe in breathe out breatheinbreatheoutbreatheinbreatheoutbreatheinbreatheout he could and the air was hitting his lungs but it was getting faster and faster and faster and faster and the world was phasing out and he couldnít think about his safety and he couldnít think about the people who trusted him and he could think about Audreyís smile because the only things in his mind were the fact that he was here on this island where he could only get off if he was the last person still alive and how he had messed up and how Min-Jae was after him and how there were people out there who hated him like Min-Jae and Isaac and Lily and he didnít want to know who else and how he couldnít trust them because only one person could get off the island and anyone could try to kill him at any moment and he didnít know what to do because he was injured and couldnít breathe and, and, and

No. He couldnít stay. As much as he wanted to stay and believe that all of this was going to be okay and that he could just be with Audrey and Danny he couldnít.

He breathed. In, out. Shallow. Breaths not reaching his lungs.

He had to get away from here.

So he moved. Suddenly, harshly. Away from Audrey, down the hall and out of sight.

((Alvaro Vacanti, continued elsewhere))
