Footsteps patterned themselves across a dusty floor. They traced the edges of bookshelves and sometimes scuffed up in a little pile. Often, one could find a clean rectangular patch on the floor, the only remaining evidence of a book knocked off the shelf that was subsequently placed back to its rightful, or what was hopefully the rightful location.

She heaved a sigh.

((G008 - Coleen Reagan, start))

There was a time for tears. Coleen had enjoyed that time earlier, leaving her face a smudged, caked, still-burnt and gross-feeling mess. She silently considered it a saving grace that the library she had been surreptitiously placed in contained no mirrors, outside of a bathroom that she was still not yet sure even existed in the building. The sides of her head were pounding, whether it be from the cocktail of whatever those men had given to her or from hitting her head on the bookshelf when she was propped up against it next to a dufflebag containing some of her belongings. She didn't recall carrying a DVD with her on the science trip, however; it was all too possible that her things had gotten mixed up with somebody else's.

Resisting the ever-present urge to wipe her face with her sleeve (an action that would serve to both irritate her scarred cheek and get a nasty mess all over her shirt, which was still a concern for reasons she couldn't quite verbalize), Coleen pressed her back to a shelf and took a good look around the room. Books, books, more books... a circle of chairs, a fireplace, and some more sophisticated furniture all adorned the room. It would be a cozy place, so long as there was nobody around to share it with her.

The thought was unfair, she realized, but she most desired to be alone. The words of that one wrinkle-eyed man bounced off of the inner walls of her head, repeating themselves again and again. Friends will turn on friends. Coleen conjured a list of names and placed a face to each one, vividly thinking about each and every student in Cochise that she had interfaced with, come to like or dislike, trust or distrust. Trust... that word was rapidly losing its meaning by the minute. How many people had taken that man's words to heart? Could Cameron enter this very room, pull out a gun and shoot her? It seemed an unlikely scenario.

It seemed far less unlikely when Coleen replaced Cameron with somebody like Vanessa.

Coleen slumped against the shelf and tucked her knees to her chest, hugging them tightly. She bit her lip to let the pain distract her from everything else.

"UH!"

It was far from the most articulate noise she could have made, but Coleen hardly had articulation in mind when her thoughts were disturbed by a crash, a strange creaking and a barrage of shuffling, and then another extremely loud crash as a shelf toppled. Suffice to say, somebody was definitely in this library with her, and they likely did not have the best intentions in mind for her.

The smartest thing to do, Coleen realized, would be to stay quiet and try to hide in a safe place. Unfortunately, the idea of complete stealth was a ship that sailed when she gasped/hiccuped/yelped in shock. Whoever was there also knew she was there. So, this was how she died, then; whoever this person was, they had already found her so soon after waking up, they were going to kill her and then they were going to take whatever weapon she had stashed on her person. So much for making it out of Kingman as an actress, or as the lead singer of a band.

"No no, uh, stay away from me!" Coleen said it without thinking. There remained the possibility, slim as it may have been, that her surprised outburst had coincided enough with the tumbling of the bookshelf that the intruder may not yet have noticed her. Had that possibility existed, it was now just more dust to line the shelves of books and the floor. Speaking of dust, there was now a cloud of it from the commotion, and Coleen used the opportunity to grab her dufflebag and hunker down behind another bookcase.

Coleen had already unzipped her bag. She made no effort to do so quietly - time was of the essence and if somebody was going to come barreling at her brandishing some sort of freakish weapon, she'd rather be able to brandish something right back at them. Instead, she found a change of her clothes that she had packed in her backpack, an article long since gone missing. Her mp3 player with all of Peyote Coyote's recorded songs, as well as all the other music she loved to listen to, was also missing.

With no time to dwell on the fact, Coleen dug straight to the bottom and pulled out the DVD case that she saw before. The words 'Drake n' Josh' were clearly visible, along with the instantly recognizable faces of the actors of the titular characters. She was just about to dismiss it when she noticed a tag punched into the corner of the DVD.

'G008 - Reagan, Coleen'

Ooooooooh hell. Rough times ahead for Coleen.

"That's... um, that's great..." Coleen sputtered, not daring to peer around the shelf she was hiding behind. "Uh, look... whoever you are..." Coleen coughed, from either stress or dust. Her nose was runny as well, a mild reaction to having kicked up some of the dust, getting it all over her skirt and blouse as well as part of her exposed legs. She was thankful for not having severe allergies, but dust of this caliber going up the nose would affect anybody, she imagined.

To make matters worse, she couldn't recognize the voice of the other person talking to her. It sounded weak and diminished - somebody trying to make themselves less threatening? If so, they were a good actress. The voice wasn't Cameron's, or Vanessa's, or even B.B.'s. Obviously wasn't Bradley's. "Whoever you are," Coleen repeated, "I... yeah, no, I don't want to fight either. So i-i-if you've got a gun or a knife or... if you're thinking of hurting me..."

She could almost see the bright light of a stage. It always gave her a headache.

Lily Caldwell. The name was not overwhelmingly familiar with Coleen. She was about ninety percent sure that there weren't any Lilies in her grade. Her heart was still pounding as Coleen decided what to do next. She was without a usable weapon, so if this girl was packing anything dangerous - she said she didn't have a gun or a knife, but she implied she had something - then running was the best course of action.

"Coleen Reagan," she said, giving her name as asked. Fair's fair, since Lily Caldwell gave hers. "Senior. I, uh, don't think I know you very well. Were you, um... the ju- one of the juniors on the trip?" Coleen asked. She dared peek around the edge of the bookshelf, just for a moment, then pulled back. She only needed a moment's glance to pick out that very distinctive hairstyle. She could easily remember walking past the girl numerous times in the hallway; that hair had caught her attention more than once. Shame this had to be the first time ever speaking to the girl.

"Look, uh-"

A scream permeating from somewhere beyond their location cut short whatever Coleen had to say. She wheezed slightly, due in no small part to her pulse and breath quickening in ever-growing fear. Dust wasn't exactly conducive to frightful gasping, and Coleen coughed as she tried to speak. "W-... UGH! Who was that!?"

No time to dwell, not on the reasons for the girl's presence (was Lily dropped in the same building, or did she come here seeking something? What was she looking for?). No time to dwell on her name, either. The Luz family were a large enough bunch, usually conjuring up thoughts of the silly O'Doyle family from Billy Madison. Coleen wouldn't have found it particular outlandish if the Luz family had kids in each grade. She also wouldn't have found it particularly outlandish if they had to use a modified school bus just to go to the supermarket.

There was no time for any of that because of the scream. To think that somebody would take to the advice of their captors so quickly... well, she supposed it wasn't like they had been left with much choice, not with those prohibitive stipulations. In less than 24 hours, one of them HAD to be dead. Otherwise, they'd all be dead, their throats torn from them thanks to these damned metal rings choking their necks.

Coleen imagined that it was the collar's presence that marked the tipping point. Waking up and processing her situation was hard enough, but to have been so... so callously marked as to have a collar on invoked the feeling of being an animal in a cage. Given that they were being 'asked' to fight to the death, a comparison to pit bulls might be more apt.

It had been a few moments since the scream, and Coleen had stepped back far enough that the bookcase no longer covered her from Lily and vice-versa. She looked at the other girl out of the corner of her eye. Her heart sank; if Lily was indeed lying and was also an aggressive party, she was too close to the door to make that a viable escape route. The vulnerability present from having no real weapon held increasing weight, and Coleen decided the best thing to do by this point would be to hide.

Again.

Dragging her bag along with her and keeping a careful eye on Lily, the girl tucked herself behind one of the couches in the reading area, switching her gaze between the door and the girl in front of it, and then towards the direction the scream seemed to come from.

Ooooooh no. No no no.

Far too much yelling.

Coleen clapped both of her hands over her ears and crouched down near her bag, clinging to the hope that maybe these two could hash out whatever clumsiness-generated catastrophe was about to befall the library and just leave her out of it. The more she stayed out of the public eye, the better. Nobody ever won a battle of attrition by drawing attention to herself.

She felt dirty for her line of thinking. If the goal of this whole disgusting charade was to get former friends and classmates to distrust one another? Then congratulations. Your stupid little social experiment was a riveting success. Maybe wait a couple more hours and then turn off the cameras, launch an announcement over some PA system if you've got it, and let everybody know they could go home.

Coleen just wanted to go home. She wanted this terrible dream to be over and, in the meantime, she needed everybody to stay the hell away from her. A hug wouldn't be that terrible either which... was rather counterproductive given her aforementioned comfort criteria. Looks like she'd be hugging herself tonight, provided she made it that far.

"Stop... stop..." Coleen murmured, mentally screaming at both Lily and Jasmine far louder than her voice could ever manage.

Just get the fuck away from that stupid door. Come on, guys, it wasn't hard. Just let her out.

Coleen winced when Lily called for her aid. Ordinarily, she wouldn't let such matters get in the way of trying to stay as inconspicuous and unseen as possible. Ordinarily, the litany of 'what if' scenarios running through the girl's mind when trying to make a decision didn't end with a series of endings where somebody ended up dead, which could very well be the case if she decided to stay hidden.

She made the decision to do as Lily as asked, though her displeasure in doing so was clearly written across her face. Coleen shakily stood up from behind the couch, raising both hands to show that they were empty. Strands of hair hung in front of her nose and cheekbone, irritating and tickling and generally bugging her. Her face urgently told her to straighten things out, countered quite powerfully with the notion that Coleen could not safely assume neither of these girls had a gun.

No guns seemed brandished at the moment between the junior who identified herself as Lily and the other girl... Jasmine, Lily had called her moments before, just before all the screaming. Coleen allowed herself to remain standing, but her stare had zoned in on Jasmine's hand reaching inside her bag for something. She was reaching for a weapon, no doubt, or anything else to protect herself with. Coleen's heart was ready to beat out of her chest; her stomach also wished to evacuate and if her gut feelings were remotely accurate, it was due to leap out of her throat at any moment.

But in feelings of tension, Coleen did what she felt she always did best.

She acted.

"Jasmine, calm down, it's alright," Coleen said, her voice unwavering past the first word or so. She had settled into that groove on the stage, pretending that she wasn't about ready to pee herself in fear. "Lily just explained to me that she cut her hand. I'm unhurt. Nobody wants to hurt anybody. Right, Lily? Right Jasmine? Nobody here wants to hurt anybody."

She didn't truly believe the words for one second, but hey. She never believed that Danny wasn't just trying to get into Sandy's pants, either. Summer days, her ass.

Jasmine's laughter was far from reassuring. Lily's startled protests had already caused the heart in Coleen's chest to skip a beat or three. The girl suddenly considered herself fortunate that she didn't have a gun on herself after all; if she did, and if she had the necessary know-how in order to use it, there was a very real chance Jasmine would have been shot just then.

Coleen just stared at Jasmine laughing, at Lily standing there flabbergasted, and at herself, thinking about everybody just shooting up the whole joint like a scene ripped straight from the Boondock Saints. She found herself peering at the couch sitting in front of her, pulling finger through the right side of her hair where it ran behind her ear and down her neck. Her fingertips brushed against the cool, cold ring of steel locked around her throat. It served as a reminder of where she was and what they were doing.

Something about Jasmine's giggling broke down a wall inside of herself, and Coleen found herself weakly giggling as well. She shook her head and slumped against the couch. How absurd all of this was, how quick a situation had devolved into everybody suspecting the worst of everybody, only for things to dissolve just before the boiling point was reached.

Coleen wasn't sure when her giggles turned to sobs and the tears began streaming down her cheeks once more.

Still considering herself fortunate not to have witnessed a terrible massacre within the first hour of her being awake, Coleen allowed her emotions to run their course. Things got quiet for a moment, during which time she restrained her actual sobs in favor of just having tears stream down both cheeks. Relief mixed with uncertainty for the future, with a swig of fear, was a weird batch of emotions to carry.

She wiped the inside corners of her eyes again, considering her makeup an absolute wash by this point. The first sink she found in this strange place, she'd wash everything off and start again with a bit of special foundation to her scars. It was an activity for later.

Coleen dragged her assigned dufflebag around the side of the couch and plopped down, sitting there in a despondent manner for whatever few seconds she allowed herself. Then she began shuffling through her bag to see what items she had been afforded. They were practical items, for the most part, things that wouldn't be out of place on your most basic camping trip. When she came across the first aid kid, she pointedly removed it from her bag and placed it on the cushion next to her. That was worth a more thorough search later.

The next thing she removed from the bag appeared to be some kind of food bar. Coleen glanced at the wrapper through pink, puffy, smudged eyes and saw enough calories to feed her for a day, and a bunch of ingredients that she didn't bother trying to make heads or tails of. She unwrapped the corner and brought the bar close to her nose, giving it a sniff. She didn't smell anything. She peeled the wrapper back further and hesitantly took a bite.

She clapped a hand over her lips to keep from reflexively spitting it out. Her imagination wasn't out of place in conjuring up the taste of a torn-up cereal box, mushed and ground up and molded to form a block of incomprehensible sludge with an unsettling consistency that also somehow managed to be unpleasantly dry. It wasn't so much that the nutrition bar tasted horrible to her; the real issue was that it didn't so much taste like anything. She turned the bar around in her hand to get a look at the other side. This thing was definitely meant to keep her alive, and nothing more. She pulled the wrapper back to as much of a closed position as she could handle, deciding maybe it would be more palatable when she was starving.

When the next thing she grabbed was a tin of crackers, Coleen pulled it back to her lap and curled up on the couch, snacking impulsively.

Coleen shook her head when she heard the question, though she made no attempt to directly address or respond to either Lily or Jasmine. She was drawn into what precious little comfort she could glean from the crackers she was munching on, the characteristically dry but strangely tasty saltines distracting her from her own sorrows.

They could not distract her, however, from her growing thirst. Realizing the error of munching on such a salty treat first thing, Coleen stopped mid-chew with a puffed-out cheek and reached for one of the bottles of water she had located in her daypack. Unfastening the cap, she hurriedly brought the bottle to her lips and relieved her mouth of its parched state.

She swallowed the remaining cracker crumbs in her mouth with relative ease and set her foodstuffs down, turning sideways on the couch so she could face the other girls. Rather than sprawl across the whole of the cushions, Coleen preferred to keep her legs tucked close, as though some unseen monster would otherwise reach over the edge of the piece of furniture and tear her limb from limb were they to dangle, or if her feet were to reach some arbitrary distance from her heart.

She thought back to adopting a similar pose as a little girl, hiding from a thunderstorm raging overhead. That was before she had siblings to contend with. After that, she had to pretend to be brave for them. She had to be their stalwart shelter, unable to be afraid as to offer them comfort.

Coleen attempted to recapture that magic, to pretend she wasn't afraid. If only she had more time before the other two girls had shown up, she could have put on a more convincing act.

"I..."

Coleen heard her name and looked up from her own kneecaps forming little mountaintops underneath her dress. "I'm sorry... what did you-"

She was about halfway through her own question when a little bit of retro-active hearing kicked in, and Coleen was able to piece together the individual parts of Jasmine's question until something made sense. The two of them were going to go somewhere, and Coleen was following? It sounded like a plan. She wanted to be anywhere other than where she was now, to understand the scope of the new world that she had been brought into. There was an area beyond this building, and she needed to test and view its bounds.

The timid girl pulled her feet off the couch and stuffed her bag full of all the items she had pulled out, then stood up. The strap of her assigned pack felt uncomfortable on her shoulder; it wasn't as soft as her backpack's straps and wasn't as well designed to facilitate a high school teenager's shoulder and back. She felt a little lopsided, a sensation that was only somewhat remedied if she brought the strap to the other side of her neck. Even then, she felt like the world was at the slightest of slants.

Coleen walked towards Lily and Jasmine, swallowing to collect herself. She looked at the door, then to the girls. "So... where are we going?" 'Somewhere we can dump your body!' her mind finished for her, dreading all the situations wherein somebody she went to school with, or somebody she knew, or even somebody she was close to might snap and kill her with the slightest provocation.

If THAT was going to be a regular thing, then Coleen just knew she was going to have buckets of fun over these next few days.

Coleen could tell Jasmine's emotions were concocted. To what end, she couldn't say, but it wasn't hard to point out when a girl was forcing a smile when she herself had to force one on a regular basis.

Lily and Jasmine were entering something of a claustrophobic space. Coleen wasn't quite into that, either. The only thing she really wanted to do was go outside, maybe get some fresh air, and make herself a sitting duck for the next person to walk along with murderous intent. Okay, she obviously didn't WANT that last part, but it was a legitimate concern offsetting her desires for freedom.

The opposite scenario, she reasoned, was even worse. If she continued to hole up in this little building without moving around, somebody with more flagrantly violent intents might wander in. What's to say that Lily and Jasmine weren't going to change their minds at some point, start with the people in closest proximity and work their way outwards? No, the only safe way to survive this was to stay alone for as long as possible. That was the only way Coleen could feel comfortable.

While the two girls were in the office, Coleen inched for the door.

With Lily and Jasmine both inside the room, her opportunity was here. Nothing stood between the door and Coleen, and likewise, her ability to leave the library and move on to the great unknown. Lily and Jasmine were great and all, but the events that transpired a few minutes ago just went to show what could happen to normally calm and reserved people in a tense situation. She assumed they were calm and reserved people, at the very least, given she couldn't remember any particular examples of drama coming from either one. They weren't like... well, Vanessa.

Coleen paused with her hand on the handle of the door. That's right... Vanessa was somewhere on this island. The very thought of Vanessa had conjured up a scenario wherein she got some sick revenge on Coleen for 'stealing' the position of lead singer in Peyote Coyote. It was an outlandish situation to dream up. Then again, it was equally outlandish to imagine all of them with bombs strapped to their necks, weapons in their hands and some evil terrorist organization they've only heard about on TV telling them to murder each other.

Unfortunately, kids listened to them in the past. Anybody who paid attention to the news at all knew that. This meant the thought of Vanessa killing somebody... of her killing Coleen, or of ANYBODY killing Coleen was no longer 'outlandish'.

It was realistic.

It was realistic, and that was terrifying.

That's why she couldn't stay here.

Sorry, guys.
